      You wouldn't be able to use it as a WiFi repeater without a cable back to your main router. If you don't mind having a cable between the two routers then it can be done. There will be many videos but text instructions are probably easier.

      Advice from me: abandon trying to discover them on the bad TalkTalk router. Install WifiMan from Ubiquiti on your phone and use the Discovery tab. (Not sure if it's android function only or if it also works on iPhones).

    Although fast, TalkTalk's automatic monitoring will automatically change any channels you have manually changed back to one it thinks is best every 2 hours. It listens on TR-069 and there is no way to disable it. TalkTalk say the monitoring software is supposed to learn which channels are the best and fastest for you and change to them, but this never happens. For 5GHz this is a very congested channel 48 which halves my internet speed. For example, I can change my channel to 100, where I get constant 78Mbps and 2 hours after I manually change it I can feel the internet has slowed down, speedtest it, and sure enough it reads as 35Mbps. TalkTalk has changed it back to channel 48. Every. Single.Time. I went on to the TalkTalk forums, and sure enough, this is the case. The only way you can get this "feature" disabled is remotely on a case by case basis by requesting it on the forum.
    TL;DR If you manually change your router channel to one that is consistently fast for you, TalkTalk will automatically change you back to one which is slower after 2 hours, no matter your settings. It's REALLY fucking annoying.

    • @freename
      @freename  4 роки тому +1

      Really good to know, thanks! I've had two people comment how bad TalkTalk routers are today.
      The other interesting comment is here:
      ua-cam.com/video/KBDu-V-KqQI/v-deo.html&lc=UgyPCh8dJ7UxZOzAacJ4AaABAg.93TuvIWfHfU97dlvxjLBiD

    • @plume...
      @plume... 4 роки тому

      @@freename Cheers! I know the comment was a bit rambling (sorry!), but I've been checking it for week now, and on 5GHz it changes the channel back to a more congested one without fail after about 2 hours. There are a TON of TalkTalk forum posts about it and every moderator on their forums confirms on every one of the posts that it is a "feature" of the firmware. They don't allude to you being able to disable it, but if you ask they will get around to disabling the automatic channel change remotely. It's throttling but disguised as "Automatic performance monitoring" (their term, not mine). It's pretty underhanded to be honest. There is absolutely NO reason to disable manual channel changing other than to control how fast your internet is. No reason.

    • @freename

      @@plume... Does the same happen if you change it to something other than channel 100? Someone I was chatting to had the idea that it may be "radar interference mitigation" moving it back.

      @@freename I'm going to give it a go on a few other channels, I'm starting on 64 right now! Thing is I'll have to wait at least 2 hours between changes to see if it happens again. @@freename Hey, just a follow up that I have been testing with numerous channels and it changes back automatically after a couple of hours every single time. It even changed to an even slower one than 48 today, with a speed of 3.6Mbps. Changed to 100 and I was back to 77Mbps! TalkTalks automatic optimisation tech simply tries to limit my bandwidth quietly in the background :/

    • @freename

      Not likely to be possible. What do you need to change the MTU for? It's unusual to need to do that unless you are trying to get Jumbo Frames working. Reducing the MTU shouldn't be required and may indicate a configuration problem somewhere in your network.

      iPhones (and Android) by default these days do random "privacy" MAC addresses when they join a network. Even if you change the name or similar the next time you connect its likely to use another MAC and not show as that custom device on the router.
      You would need to turn off the privacy functions in the iPhone settings to likely start at making it more likely to show correctly on the router.

      Depends if you are on the TalkTalk PPP network or the Ethernet based network. If you are on the Ethernet network it is unlikely that you can force your IP to change. If you are on the PPP network it is likely that your IP will change each time you connect.
      Newer connections, as far as I know, on TalkTalk are Ethernet based.

      If you reset the router the password will just stay whatever it is on the sticker. You would need or want to change that password to something custom for the WiFi if you suspect someone knows the current password. Once you fill that new password in your devices should save it. I recommend changing the WiFi name too so things dont try to connect to the original name using the old password.

      At 5:00 you can see how to get to the "Port Forwarding" screen. Add the rules in there for the ports you need and the IP of the DVR. However - Be aware that opening up your DVR to the entire internet can be a risk. Make sure you have a good password and that your DVR software on the box itself is up to date and you keep it up to date. CCTV DVR boxes, including hikvision, have been hacked in the past and used to launch attacks on the internet or use your electricity to mine bitcoin.

    • @freename
      @freename  3 роки тому

      As I don't think the talktalk router can do bridge mode (ask in their forum, I might be wrong), your only option is "double-NAT". Plug from any of the LAN ports on the TalkTalk router into the internet/WAN ethernet port on your 5G router.
      Set your 5G router to do Dynamic IP and you should then be good to go!.
      Double NAT may cause problems with game consoles and, if you need to use the function, it will cause problems with port forwarding.
