This scene is insanely underrated. God, Kenny's whole character is underrated. His line "everyone is a slave to something" really highlights AOT's themes in a fascinating way
You can actually see where Levi's entire emotional/psychological complex arose: when Kenny abandons him. Even when Levi was starving alone, seemingly never having sought help, you can still see his naiveté in how quickly & readily he trusts/clings to Kenny. The emotional wound of Kenny's apparent rejection is the most singular event & factor that transforms him into the person we see as an adult. He immediately retreats into that emotional fortress - disavows his needs, resolves that he doesn't "need" others, that he truly cannot trust anyone else. Levi's perception of the world as cruel & unforgiving is finally cemented with this one interaction. Before this, Levi still had a prominent faith/trust in other people's capacity to be kind & loving because of his strong, reciprocal, & affectionate rship with his mother. To Levi, Kenny's abandonment is a wake-up call. The child Levi was, before Kenny abandoned him - soft-hearted & trusting, desperate for love & approval - got locked behind all the emotional defenses he could afford to employ.
One of the interpretations of that Levi smiling and saying thank you scene is that he was grieving Kenny's death at that time, and that lighthearted moment managed to take his mind off of it for a second and so he smiled in gratitude.
I love Levi's reaction. How he looked at Historia like "what does she thinks she's doing?". He probably didn't realize she hit him and actually thought she was poking him. He thought they were seeking him because they care about him and wanted to check on him. So he thanks them instead. Especially after he was feeling down after his uncle died.
That's actually sad...mistaking a punch for some way of showing affection 🥲 But at least they do care about him! (or at least i would like to think so!)
I legit ugly cried in this scene so much, seeing Levi losing people one after another is just so painful for me, I can tell that Levi is crying on inside.. Maybe he cried by himself we never know. But i truly admire him, he has been thru a lot, ever since he was young he never saw happiness, even the little good moment he experienced with his friend didn't last a week. At this point he is just surviving not living, he is surviving to avenge the people he lost, he doesn't care if he dies but he doesn't want to until he brings meaning to the people who sacrificed themselves for the sake of humanity.. At this point.. He isn't surviving for himself but for others and then if he dies he will die peacefully knowing he accomplished his duty..
It's kind of sad but whenever Levi loses someone important to him, either they seem to die in front of him or Levi finds their dead bodies alone. The deaths he witnesses just feels so much heavier and lonelier.

I didn’t know Kenny has a nobleman’s heart even from the past. He saved Levi from famine and got him back on his feet. Then he saved Historia by making her realize how corrupt of an as-shole her father is.
So is Levi's obssesion with cleaning derived from his childhood in a dirty brothel? Dirt and grime reminding him of the aweful room he lived in starvation and watched his mother die in? Is an even midely dirty room remind him of those painful memories?
In an instance that Levi found family, he lost family. That punch at the end and smile from Levi was him embracing the fact that he still has "family" left with his scouts.
Even with all his flaws Kenny in his short time was a really great character. A selfish bas-tard maybe but he was one of the few people completely aware of the flaws in the world that he lived in, and most of all his own flaws. He knew as he said that "everyone was a slave to something" and he didn't want to raise Levi not because he didn't want to but because he knew without him in his life, Levi would become a better man then he is and not turn out like him
5:17 “You tiny old man!” when Eren realized his mistake, hoping that Levi wouldn’t take it the wrong way -aimed at himself. That’s why Eren pauses in fear and Levi is just staring like that.
All the badmouthing of the intro song just makes me all the more excited for when they react to the intros of S4, because those are definitely the best of them all.
I didn't really want to bring it up again, but they keep bringing it up themselves. So, for the guys who don't like this opening: I get that the opening music isn't everyone's cup of tea (and you are absolutely not obligated to like it!) but I feel like you haven't asked yourselves *why* the music is different from the big, anthem-like songs of the last 3 openings and how that music direction might not suit the story arc where the characters become outlaws within the walls and actually throw a coup against the government, while titans are almost all but nonexistent in most of the storyline, and the story shifts its focus to the human motivations and reasons for conflict within the walls. Our protagonist is even suicidal at one point, believing he would've been better off having never existed. You might not like the choice of music, but it makes a statement that the arc isn't about the "glorious battles" against an incomprehensible foe, but very human struggles against other humans. It's not supposed to be uplifting, and exciting, and gory. Instead, it's focused on the human heart. Maybe it's an element of having not watched other anime, but most anime shift their openings to speak to the mood of the story arc its portraying, and that goes for the music too. While it's clear you have a preference of music, the constant statements of this song not being like the others makes it seem like you haven't really thought about *why* it's not like the others, and *why* they changed the genre of music showcased during this arc's opening. If I'm wrong about that, and you just think the previous genre would've suited this arc better regardless, then this comment shouldn't have said anything you guys haven't already thought about, so disregard it. Either way, it's been fun to hear your thoughts on the story nonetheless! Cheers! :)
it's so heartwarming to see that reactors like you guys who are very new to anime love this show not only bc of the action but bc of the story, dialogue, and character development so i believe that you're all gonna love "vinland saga" too. it's a viking anime with 2 seasons (3rd season is currently in production i think) and loosely based on a true story (its characters were real life ppl that existed in european history)

in AOT, it is really hard to fully hate a character. That Kenny saying that if he had the same power, would he be as good of a person as Uri. Damn.. you really know that he doesn't want to be what he is. It is just that it is the world he lived in and everything on the other side is an alien to him but it is true. It is hard to see what other's perspective especially if you were conditioned from when you have gained consciousness that this is the type of world you live in. It's like expecting Tarzan to have tableside manners.

This thing about this opening is…most people consider it VERY poignant and the the second best opening of the entire show, or at least AFTER finishing the show, due to some major themes of the series, some I won’t mention here for obvious reason 🙂 most like things in, even this intro is a subversion, and will throw you for a loop🙂🤘
