Jordan Peels's directorial debut and it didn't disappoint! Jordan crushed it here as well as all the actors. Just a wild story. A brain/conscious transfer?! It's wild to think about and the grand parents.... haha that was crazy to see at the end. Overall, a fun suspenseful film. Curious to everyones thoughts on this story by Jordan Peele. What was your first time reaction? Did we miss anything?
Now that Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) and his girlfriend, Rose (Allison Williams), have reached the meet-the-parents milestone of dating, she invites him for a weekend getaway upstate with her parents, Missy and Dean. At first, Chris reads the family's overly accommodating behaviour as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter's interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries leads him to a truth that he never could have imagined.

This is the perfect movie to rewatch you miss so much stuff...ill tell you a few...his grandfather was mad at jessie owens for beating him at running and thats why he focused his life on changing bodies ..thats why its funny when chris says it sucks for your dad that he lost to jessie owens...the dad responds "He almost got over it " thats a lol moment for me ...or how the grandpa was hugging and greeting all the party guests ..like whos ever seen a grounds keeper greeting party guests ? lol.....also ironic how as a black man he had to pick cotton to survive...kind of like how slaves did...jordan peele is a genius
Psychological thrillers are very difficult to pull off but Get Out is brilliant. The tension was perpetual, that uneasy feeling that's hanging over Chris just consumes the audience and allows you to feel that constant level of discomfort as it builds to the big reveal...perfect. Especially since it's part mystery and your walking through it with Chris without knowing that it's a mystery. This is by far one of the best psycho/horror movies ever made. The actors with their awkward mannerisms and stoic yet disturbing behaviour was pulled off flawlessly. Not to mention that the concept itself, as Mason stated Stepford Wives vibes, is very original, derranged and frightening. Delving into the sunken place and how it was described and shown was absolutely terrifying. There are other films that fit the bill including Shutter Island, Split, Identity and The Machinist which you guys should check out especially for October. Enjoy!!
I love Jordan Peele's work. It's always entertaining while working on a deeper metaphorical level (Get Out was inspired by "polite racism" where we want the different colors in our friends but not the actual person). I'd watch whatever he makes in the future right now while preferably knowing as little as possible beforehand.

when you're the only minority in the room feeling like something feel off, you will gaslight yourself a lot, so him not leaving immediately kinda make sense
Plus not wanting to appear rude to his gf's family who he's meeting for the first time.

The fact that he had to literally pick cotton (from the chair) to survive, I feel was also a symbolism. Also Georgina's "No, no, no, no..." was incredible. The struggle between the grandmother and the girl was so well done. That actress, Betty Gabriel, is amazing
Her being able to make her eyes say "Help!" while her mouth is smiling needs its own category of Best Acting.
She's also excellent as the police detective in UPGRADE!

In addition to him having to pick cotton to save himself, the white woman's primary weapon against him is a 'silver spoon' refering to her stature by birth. There are many symbolizims Jordan Peele put into the film.

There's an alternative ending, which was the original one: When instead of Rod, was two cops who happened upon a blood-soaked Chris trying to strangle a wounded Rose, and the final scene saw Rod visit Chris in prison.
According to Jordan Peele: It was very clear that the ending needed to transform into something that gives us a hero, that gives us an escape, gives us a positive feeling when we leave this movie. There's nothing more satisfying than seeing the audience go crazy when Rod shows up.
Just watched that alternate ending. It was good, but glad they went with the finish they did.
I'm all for dark/bad endings at times, because the classical happy ending gets kind of boring, as in its a standard so you expect it, but in this case I def prefer the happy ending. Waaay more satisfying. xD
@@UchihaKuriso I would agree if it wasn’t so predictable. When the car pulls up every reaction I saw was like “nooo how is he going to explain this” expecting him to get arrested. I think only ONE reactor I saw noticed it was Rod immediately.

Great directorial debut for Jordan Peele! Also, love that little detail at the start with Rose not letting the cop get Chris' ID. It looks like she's trying to stand up for Chris, when in reality, she's making sure there is no paper trail that leads Chris to their house.

I feel like her best bet of not having a trail would've been to not call the cop at all in the first place...

This is one of those movies that deserves a rewatch once you know what's going on. There's a lot of symbolism and themes that often go unnoticed the first time. 💕
Agreed. A few watches to catch everything. Lots of little things they did here.
I actually recommend this movie to my graphic design students (I always assign them to make a short film as their final) to watch for an excellent example of use of the close-up shots in story telling.

Finally! A horror show where the character actually tells their significant other what's happening.... I laughed so hard because this was the one horror show that he shouldn't have talked to her at all.

@@Zombina638often in horror movies (mostly ones with poor writing), someone will experience something but find a reason to not tell anybody that it happened. The original comment was just pointing out that it rarely happens in movies, but it ended up being a poor choice considering the person he told was in on it.

To me the creepiest part was the gf on the phone, completely deadpan, yet faking emotion. It was so eerie...
The creepiest part of the dialogue is it’s real. 100% of all the black/ppl of color have experienced weird/condescending/micro aggressive comments and behavior. And, like Chris, we’re trained to dismiss it or downplay it.
reminds me of this trend that comes and go from time to time, of laughing without showing any emotion.. edging on uncanny valley :x
I have to say as a black woman, the way Rose is acting about Chris's race, really happens. Never been so many times where someone is offended in my behalf, and sometimes have even argued with me on why I should be offended as a black person. And the first time I watched it I thought, "Oh, she's one of those who's going to be so overly hyper focused on protecting him against any racial tension or insult. That she doesn't realize she's the issue."
I appreciate your commentary on that. That even when others are more aware and are willing to ally with us at the same time it’s still never going to quite be the same as being us.
Especially for Caucasians and non-blacks to know that you can go too far to the other extreme from overt racism to unintentional racism on the privileged idea that you think you know what’s best for us instead of just asking us how we feel about it or what our position is.

I didn't realise this on the first watch, but grandpa was a runner who lost to a black man who then became a world legend! The scene of him running makes so much more sense now
Watching this in a packed theater was an experience I'll never forget. The noise when Rod showed up instead of cops was insane.
One of the most fkd up things is that as soon as the boyfriend is no longer, Rose puts her pictures back at the wall. It's kinda like the heads of animals, it's her hunting trophies
Just realized the trauma from from the the hit and run kept Chris from from getting his driving license and wanting to drive and car himself. That’s why he only has a state ID.
Yea, Rose's interaction with the highway trooper preventing him from getting Chris' ID looks a lot different once you've seen the whole film and know its secrets than in the beginning. Also, the facial expression acting from the actress playing Georgina is incredible.
I loved the symbolism of the deer dying, it reopened those wounds of knowing he could have helped someone find his mom if he'd pushed through his fear and acted to call someone for help, so it helped him in this situation to let Rob in even at the expense of it "being too real" and him sounding crazy.
ALSO, I loved the irony of the "transplantation" scene. The word obviously makes the audience think of a slave cotton "plantation", and the brain transplant was a metaphor for how rich white people are still enslaving black people to this very day and age. The irony: the COTTON stuffing from the couch was what saved him!
Been waiting for this one all week. Gotta love Rose's segregation of food, keeping colored Fruit Loops and white milk separate. There is so much symbolism in this movie it's crazy. The dad's rant about deer spreading uncontrolled is a reference to black men being referred to as "Bucks". It's a perfectly made movie, and Allison Williams after her turn is perfectly horrifying. Girl deserved an Oscar nomination.
Jordan Peele has said he didn't mean there to be any symbolism with that - he just thought it was the kind of thing a psychopath would do, lol. But he loved that fans picked up the symbolism, something he didn't even realize he'd done.

They didn’t want him smoking so he wouldn’t mess up the condition of him as the merchandise preparing him for the auction. Even the way the brother whinned about how he wasn’t going to hurt him was similar to a kid with a new toy or object in general… the whole thing just rubbed me wrong. not too mention the house looks like the plantation houses they used to have… it’s so much and that’s not even close to everything especially the symbolism
I have a running theory that the reason why comedians are so easily able to switch from comedy to drama is because they had to use comedy early in their lives to get through some really dark trauma.
That they are then able to better process and handle later in their careers through work like this.
Comedians are also some of the smartest thinkers around, it's not surprising for intelligent, quick witted people to be successful in other creative fields.
@@jinnimoo Oh, I def don't mean to diminish this part at all. I made my comment under the assumption that they are extremely intelligent and quick witted people. I mean in addition to this. Comedians seem to get the horror genre unnervingly well, and I think it's, in part, due to what I said above.
I would say more it would be horror/ thrillers even more than drama. And another factor on to what you already stated, would be timing. Comedy and horror both require an understanding of timing, in a way that other genres don't have. If the timing is off the joke won't land or there's not enough suspense to build up for the the fright to happen
If you listen to any comedian, they’ll tell you this.
Actually in theater we're taught tradedy is the best comedy. And vice versa
There's a lot of racial symbolism too. The deer has historically represented black people. The dad made a reference that the deer are everywhere and a nuisance. Rose eating her cereal with the multi colors separated from the white milk. Him picking cotton to survive just to name a few.
I love this movie and a rewatch is a must to catch it all. Grandpa running in the middle of the night since he ‘almost got over’ getting beat in the qualifying race, Grandma watching herself in the reflection since she’s just enamored with her new skin. So creepy and great first outing, Chris scratching from the nicotine withdrawal during the meeting with the parents leading to his salvation later on… so many things!

One great underrated scene was Rose eating the COLORED cereal while keeping the WHITE milk deprecate from it. Jordan Peele killed it with that scene.
"She's a Genius" that line was genius. 🤣
This movie touched on so many social issues but the main ones that comes to mind is the Tuskegee Experiment and Henrietta Lacks. But in the beginning the reason he looked at the dead deer for a long time was because that's how his mother died and it triggered his pain.
I think grandma had a few kinks to her transplant because she was one of the first. So I think Peeles point was as he did more transplants he was perfecting it. But with grandma she was one of the 1st so it wasn't perfect. That's why she was having these breakthrough moments. And just like with the brother when Chris was trying to leave. At the dinner table they were talking about you gotta think 3 steps ahead with b3ing a fighter. So if you notice when he was trying to stop chris from leaving, that 3rd kick from the brother is when Chris stabbed him in the knee. Because he was expecting that 3 attempts from him as in he was Thinking 3 steps ahead. When they were at Chris's house before heading to her parents she was playing with the dog and she told the dog I gotta go pick your dad's brain. She meant literally lol. It's a lot of little hidden Easter eggs lol. The black mold and the basement. Meaning they had molds of black people... this was a well done movie.
Such a great film and impossible to catch everything on the 1st go, but I'll list just the great hints and clues, callbacks as I remember.
-Chris had to literally pick COTTON to escape this crazy white family lol symbolism.
- Rose not wanting the cop to have his ID leaving a paper trail.
-The people who've had the transplant all wear hats to hide the surgical scar and grandma/Georgina when we see her at night is messing with her wig in the mirror as a nod to her hiding her scar.
- the arrival at the house gave us Multiple clues immediately, "We had to seal up the basement due to *black mold*" being the leftover brains of black people.
-pops mentioned keeping a little piece of grandma in the kitchen while it introduced Georgina who has a piece of grandma brain in her.
-the dad mentioned his hatred of deer and he's killed by a deer.
-the brother mentioned the MMA mockingly saying he was superior with intelligence being 3 steps ahead, and when he fights Chris at the door Chris reaches for the door 2x then the 3rd time he stabs him because he knew he'd kick the door again hence Chris was *3 steps ahead*
-the grandfather thing is the reason for it all remember dad said his claim to fame was losing to Jesse Owens in the Olympics, and he never got over it! Well he indoctrinated the family with the whole "with our intellect and your physical superiority we'd conquer the world" that the brother was saying at dinner.
-Grandad truly never got over losing because that's what he was doing at night he's always trying to beat Jesse Owens Olympic time.
Well that's all I remember currently, but a fun fact 1 of you mentioned the milk and cereal so people of course came up with theories for everything after seeing how Jordan littered this film with hidden and deeper meaning clues. So the audience said she does that due to her racism as well and not wanting to mix white with *colored*, but in a GQ interview in which Jordan Peele discusses this and all the clues he said that's not what he intended he just thought it was very creepy lol but he does allow for it to be retroactively true.
I just found your channel. Loved your review. Looking forward to seeing more. And I agree with the 5 answers. This movie was so clever. I still enjoy it. The grandmother wasn't crying, it was the sliver of the girl fighting the grandmother internally. She was trying to get out of the sunken place

For me I'm ranking Get Out number 1, Nope second, and Us third. But so far Jordan Peele only makes masterpieces in my opinion. Whether people get it or not you can't deny the attention to detail and originality. I like how he defines horror as the exploitation of things and the suffering that it causes, which happen in all of his movies so far. Looking forward to everything he makes.
5:05 The cop asking for his ID is an interesting detail because she makes it appear like she is defending him because that is bullshit (which it obviously is), but on a rewatch when you know the truth, she’s actually probably trying to make sure there isn’t a record of him being in that area - since the cop would run the ID through the system, there’d be a paper trail if he disappeared 😬👍

Bro what’s crazy is Daniel Kayuula is crazy British! His American accent is impeccable!! And that expression he made when he first went into the sunken place what also very impressive! Extremely hard to do, kudos to him for his amazing acting work here!
I found the film not only scary but fascinating from a racial perspective. It was so interesting to see the passive aggressive racism that many aren't aware they do. And running with that idea. Oscar deserved and the acting, omg... I too preferred this to Us.

This is based on African American, not folklore, but stories that told in families that everyone believes actually happens. The kidnapping, switching of the brains, etc.
And yes, I’m glad you caught the symbolism’s like here wearing white, drinking white milk through a black straw, eating colored cereal one color at a time.
I think the actress who played Georgina (Grandma) should have been nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Amazing talent!!

I mean that is exactly what folklore is, stories told in communities, families etc, that are based on myths, legends, and are often meant to protect people from danger…

Everyone's first reaction when the cop car pulls up says a lot.
I LOVE the details on this movie... especially the fact that Rose doesn't let the officer get Chris' ID, otherwise they would know where the missing guy would be, and also how the grandpa was an athlete and the housekeeper was practicing running late at night
There is a theory that Rose was hypnotized too when she was a teen. She mentions how her mom used hypnotism to help you get over her stage fright and we can see all the playbills on her wall.
I think Allison Williams said it wasn’t true and she was just a psychopath who would continue the whole thing even if her parents died
Once you know what's going on you realize all the little things that happened... like she goes off on the cop, but you realize it's because she didn't want a paper trail or evidence that Chris was with her.... and then everything at the party. Totally worth a rewatch or two to catch everything ..

A part of the role that Lil' Rel played was that Jordan Peele wanted to take that guy in the movie theater who yells at the screen during horror flicks and put that guy into the movie.
Great reaction. I love that you all caught the idea behind Rose's bag and her bedroom vs. a guest bedroom. Very few people catch that!!! The way you all were picking up on clues without knowing that you were was so exciting. I kept thinking you all were going to figure it out early on and the anticipation that gave me was great lol.
The title of the movie "Get out" is so apt that we scream get out throughout the movie.
Comedians make the transition so well to dramatic acting and writing because they're masters of timing and intonation, precise word choice and pacing.
The first time I watched this, I totally overlooked the comment about her grandfather getting beat out by Jessie Owens for the Olympics; thus that weird running scene. And I agree; definitely a five.
I didn't notice it until someone else told me but the separating of the fruit loops and milk besides being super creepy on its own is like an analogy for separating whites and colors.

37:30 This is probably one of my favorite icing-on-the-cake details. Rose is keeping the white milk separate from the colored cereal.
Also, the groundskeeper was sprinting at Chris that night because he was being "driven" by Grandpa Armitage, the Olympic track athlete whose claim to fame was losing to Jesse Owens.
There is a director, Tom Shadyac. He did Ace Venture, Nutty Professor, Liar Liar, Patch Adams, and Bruce Almighty. As you can see, comedy movies. Some I loved. He did a movie called Dragonfly with Kevin Costner. There is a scene in that movie that made my hair stand up, not a lot of movies do that. If you want to know, Costner's character leaves the house for a reason and is just staring at the door. twice it made my hair stand up. The first time, and the second time the next day just to see if it'd do it again. Comedy people defo can tap into something.
Did you guys also notice that when Rose had the cereal and the milk, they were separated or “segregated?”
Honestly the most accurate thing I found interesting was how much better Chris was suppose to be at anything just because he was black. (don’t get me wrong we are great lol) but I loved how the brother assumed he would just be good at fighting, the black is in fashion line, the lady asking if he was a better lover these are all things I’ve definitely heard in my life I’ve even had people assume things about me, i worked in retail and this white guy assumed I played basketball and he wasn’t the first white guy to say it (I did but still lol) but acted so surprised when they heard I was also in band.
The deer in the headlights. Think about it. The flashing light broke the spell of the victims...like a deer in head lights. How this whole story unfolds unto Chris, hitting him like a deer in headlights. Dude. A whole nuther level just opened up woth this movie. Damn. JP is one hell of a student! A+!!
when i saw this a second time and the gardener is running it all came back to me that the grandfather used to be a track star, this whole movie was insanely detailed

I love seeing other races watch this movie. It's the cultural difference. Where many blacks knew from the beginning and others can get to the end still not knowing. When you rewatch it, you'll start to notice all the subtle hints that was easy to look over the first time.
By the way, the basement was filled with "BLACK mold"
When they all pulled up in black cars it symbolized how the white people were taking over black bodies. Also the scene where Chris gets startled by the lion plays back to when Jeremy said he was a beast. Lions are nicknamed 'king of the beats', an old racist trobe that black people are animals. The grandfather was running because he was beat by Jesse owens, so he thought if only he had his 'physical advantages ' he would've beat him. That's why Deen said 'he almost got over it'.
I remember watching this in the cinema. People cheered when Garden Guy shot White Cow in the gut, and then himself cos he was finally set free. We cheered even harder when we realised it was his buddy who showed up to save him! It was epic!
Fun fact is how all the black people that had gone under the procedure were wearing hats cause if not their scars on their heads would be visible
I love the small yet poignant detail of cotton picking being what helped Chris survive. Jordan Peele is a genius.
I think this is the better overall constructed movie. The symbolism and the subtle clues are really tight. But I also like rewatching US more. The music, and the acting… especially the double acting, is just a pleasure to watch.

Yes, in a rewatch you pick up some stuff now that you have context. Like that scene you didn't understand why he was looking at that deer they ran over in a certain way. He was thinking about his mom's accident. Or when the maid started crying randomly looking at him, you can fkn see the girl scratching the walls inside trying to come out but unnable to leave that sunken place.
What I love is how different each films are. Each is great in their own way and I feel are incomparable imo

The blind man admired Chris’s eyes/vision as a photographer. So that pretty much why he wanted him.

the guy to the right got it right about their inaction with the coo asking for Chris's ID, but the guy in the middle wasn't correct in saying it's normal for the cop to ask for ID when you've been in a wreck. The only ID they need to ask for is the driver's. The interaction was a show of how when African Americans are ID checked when they're not even the subject of the investigation/accident just because they're present which made Rose's reaction understandable and able to slide under the radar when watching the movie because it's an actual issue AAs face in the world.

Great review. You guys crack me up. Another reference not discussed much is the deer that jumped in front of car. Was it a trying to warn him to turn around. He was locking eyes with the deer as if seeing his mother lying there from her car accident. And then how the deer antlers were used at the end to kill the father. TS MFing A, was my favorite line.
I really would love to see the rewatch. To see all the "ah-ha" moments. Seeing all the puzzle pieces come together I think would be amazing to watch. I've watch so many comments channels do this movie. Unfortunately no commentary has done it when this is the one movie to do it.
