You're right, but for most of what I need, this is more than good enough. It's well within normal wood tollerances. The shafts I made were pretty danged well ballanced. It's also something that requires very little time or math skills.
Especially if you've drilled holes in all your buddys' index fingers next to the top knuckle. Some of the dumber ones are good for a couple of accidents, but they all learn after a bit.
