    Hey Joe! I’m new to fly fishing. I’ve been learning from your videos and saving money to try and get the gear. I’m going to head over the pass and hit your shop up as soon as the weather is better so I can get over the pass! I appreciate your videos! Keep tight lines! Thank you Sir!

    I have several gloomis rods and am very impressed with all of them. I have been euronymphing with a 10’ 5wt Orvis Recon dry fly rod. It’s pretty clunky and I need to buy a true euronymph rod. Likely it will be this rod in a 3 wt.

  • @dgracia18

    I have a couple of 10-ft rods but both are heavier. One is an Orvis 10' 5-wt. Access rod and the other is an older 10-ft. 6-wt Orvis PM-10 rod. The older PM-10 has a more delicate tip. But I have nothing as light and long as this 10-ft. 2wt.
    I primarily use the hinged-nymphing method developed by Dean Schubert and Dave Hickson back in the late '70's/early '80's. I taught fly-fishing schools with Dean for 10-years (1987 through 1997) and done properly, that is a deadly method. I have also used what came to be known as the Euro-nymphing method on the Upper Sacramento River (and elsewhere) where it was just known as short-line nymphing or the Ted Fay Method (back in the 60's and 70's) long before we heard about the Euro-nymphing method.
    The flies used there were typically known as the "Bomber' series of flies tied by Ted Fay from his fly shop in Dunsmuir, CA alongside the Upper Sacramento River (Upper Sac). Although this short-line nymphing method became known as the Ted Fay Method in the 60's, it was originally introduced by Ted Towendolly (Tauhindauli of the Wintu Tribe) in the 1920's, as was the Black Bomber fly he used to catch fish at the end of his fly rod in the pocketwater of the Upper Sac.
    Unlike the modern Euro Nymphs, these were large flies typically in sizes 8, 10, and 12. There are lots of Stonefly species in the Upper Sac including the 3" long Giant Salmonfly, the Western Green Drake and other fat clinger nymphs. You'd start tying the fly by running a bed of thread along the hook shank and then putting 0.30 lead wire all along the shank. Then a hackle tail followed by various colors of dubbing and a hackle collar. Some even had some hackle tip wings sloped low like a wet fly wing but split out to the sides as opposed to being married together. The profile wasn't a lot different than that of a bomb and they were very heavy flies. Most importantly they got down to the fish very quickly and you were fishing right away.
    Most folks lobbed them out and let them sink. Then they raised he tip of the rod until the slack went out of the leader and then led it slowly downstream just slightly faster than the current. The fish in the pocketwater of the Upper Sac would just slam them. There was no subtlety to the take. I've also used that method with flies as small as a #18 PT with a BB shot located about 6" above the fly. I like to fish that along the outer seams of current and then through the seams. Not as explosive of a take as the pocketwater fishing with a bomber, but takes are always solid.
    Anyhow, I'd love to have a long 2-wt. to use with the Euro-style hard-body nymphs. I like the tip on my old PM-10 10-ft. 6wt., so this would probably replace my Access 105 rod.
    Thanks!

    I’m using a 9 ft 4 wt sage II with one reel set up for drys and another reel with the SA euro nymph line and leader kit….not ideal but it’s allows me to get my feet wet in the euro nymph game here in VA/NC.

      @redsflyshop  2 роки тому +1

      Yea, you wouldn't want to replace that rod. The 3106 ESN II is practically cheating haha. It's a tuning fork for feeling strikes. That and the T and T are next level, but this rod is an excellent choice. If someone told me I had to use this rod the rest of my life, I'd be stoked. Nice rod.

    Hi Joe, just purchased this rod from your shop on close out. Thanks for all your great content. By the way, if using traditional fly line as a plan B, what weight line would you recommend for the 3 wt 10 footer?

    • @redsflyshop
      @redsflyshop  8 місяців тому

      I would just use a WF floater, a 3-4 weight line will work just fine. Heck, you could try a 5 weight if you already have one and see if it works. Maybe make use of the gear you already have.

    I’m fishing a 2 wt 10’ sage esn and a 2wt 10’4” epiphany moonshine euro rods. The moonshine tip is more flexy than the esn. Id like to have a euro rod in a 0 or 1 wt for my extreme ultra light nymphing. Red’s, do you know of a rod like this ? Any info will be appreciated!!!! Thanks!! How is the flex on the tip section compared to the esn 2wt?

    • @redsflyshop
      @redsflyshop  2 роки тому +1

      Oh the ESN is going to give you more feedback than this rod. I would say the ESN is thinner and stiffer, but that's just my gut. I have an ESN 2 Weight, it's sweet. The 10' 2 Weight T and T Contact IMO is the "most telling" out of any rod I've ever personally used. It's a real challenge getting that tip stiff and thin/light without breaking. It's like a mechanical pencil. It's the most precise, but the most brittle.

    Do these rods have the same issues that the Echo Shadows have with their tips breaking easier than other euro rods?

    • @redsflyshop
      @redsflyshop  Рік тому

      The IMX PROe seems to be more durable than the Echo products, (which are great, very sensitive) just more fragile than most. I do like the Echo, but it's a good idea to purchase a spare tip.
