DONE! Awesome vid as always Alex, I've been a spin fisherman all my life and last season I thought I'd try to fly fish with little success. Over winter I was determined to figure out how to get better. I discovered your videos and started feeling more confident in what you teach and this season I've already caught 5 good fish on my super cheap airflo fly and I can't thank you enough! Cheers to an epic season ahead.
I’ve been fishing with the Encounter 8wt Combo on the Tongariro for the last 12 months . I paid about $360 for it last year and have been really happy with it so far and after seeing your review I’m off to buy the 6wt also . I must have fished 30-40 full days, caught hundreds of fish and it still shows very little wear . I changed the line last month as it broke , getting wrapped around my Orvis pro boots which I also love, and found the Rio gold 8wtf floating line I purchased was a nice improvement on my cast , all the best everyone, regards Darryl
Great video again sir you don't need expensive gear to enjoy a days fishing there is plenty of good fly rods and reels out there at good prices at end of the day its not the rod that catches the fish it's the angler using it all the best from bonny Scotland
Done, for my buddy who's really starting the get the hang of fly fishing but broke his rod on a big brown a while back. Amazing quality content as always, Tight Lines!
Cheers mate didn't know orvis had a set under 500 here which is good to know, might get me one had to slightly modify mine after last time fishing there, now fishing a 8.9" rod as they don't make the tip section anymore. Looking forward to your summer dry sessions!!!
Hey Alex. I bought this combo last year after breaking my previous rod. It also catches brown trout as I am experiencing here on the West Coast of the South Island. Having fished for many years very pleased with the kit. Interesting to see you also use the floating line for streaming - will try that instead of swapping over to a sinking line. Might take off the tapered leader for the smaller streams/clear water. Thanks for tips. The rod holder is great for the long walks
Done! Great video and a great way to encourage more people to take up fly fishing without wasting heaps of money. I would love to hear some more details on what makes the better rods and reels better compared to this kit.
Caught a fish on the 8'6" #5 of this rod today? 4lb at 20", so a bit stocky but the rod handed really well and I was super impressed. I have no complaints, and given the price I am actually pretty stoked!
Done!! Was taken fly fishing at the end of last season for the first time! Loved it still trying to find the money to buy my own set up! This would be perfect !
I give free fly fishing classes monthly and have been impressed with some of the lower end combos lately. I’d like to have seen you throw the SA line on the rod also, just to see the difference. I’ve found you can improve a cheaper rod with a great line and continue to improve your skills with minimal investment.
Super Cool!!!!! I recently got this rod and reel. I have been fishing my whoile life, but only fly fishing within the last 2 years. Because of you. I started watching your videos and was inspired to learn. I'm from Las Vegas, my wife is from Kati Kati NZ, I'm heading over to NZ in May for a month. I'm going to give it a go. Thanks Bro.
Well that was a good demonstration of that rod, looks like it’d be good for somebody wanting to get into fly fishing. What does your buddy think of that vest? Thanks for the video.
DONE! Awesome video as always, was wondering if that combo was any good, looks like it definitely is! I’d put that combo to good use on some US Great Lakes rainbows if I won the draw!
GREAT STUFF! Was an awesome day on the river for sure. Man we sure caught a ton of fish. I knew you'd be impressed with that Encounter outfit. Great starter kit for those jumping into the sport. Thanks for netting a few for me that day 😉
Done , Great videos, now I am planning a trip out your way end of this year beginning of next, had a 5 week trip to South Island many years back, caught a few fish but GF at the time was little bit instant I pay attention to her and not so much the fishing, that did have benefits but missed out on lots of fishing. Will have to reach out during the planning session to see what to do and where to try, very open to trying both Islands this time and no women this time, wife as she is now stays at home lol
Well, OK, but hardly an objective test, since it's YOU, on a NZ stream. I mean, how much worse would you do with a curtain rail and some dental floss? A much more convincing demo would be ME, with THAT gear, catching trout THAT size, on a Washington State stream. BTW, if my comments ever sound bitter, it's because I am. And BTW, awesome fun as usual, thanks!
Wont say done as don't need the kit, but as always, great video and I learn so much every time I watch you fish. Are you using poly or fluro for the sinking leader? Look forward to being back in NZ after too long away. Keep up the great content.
I like your videos and the scenery is mind blowing! But is it time consuming making your own leader? I just buy Umpquas leader and add tippet ring and about 2 feet of leader ??
Takes no time at all. Building a straight through leader is Much more effective at getting your flies down quickly than using a tapered leader and worth doing
Hi Alex suggestion for you. Instead of using the word cheap ( cheap & nasty) how about inexpensive? Something I learned working at Simpsons Picadilly many many years ago
Done, but not for me, for the better half as she needs her own gear 😊 Great review Alex, and good too see some nice fish in that river still. I’ll be heading up Taupo way next weekend 🥳
Done! Thanks for the great content. @mannyfishadventures taught me everything he knows, and now I know less than when I started! Looking forward to seeing your next south island adventure.
I want to learn how to learn to fly fish. I am looking at the Encounter as my first rod combo. I have a Orvis store near by. I’m also looking at the Reddington also. What do you think would be best for a beginner?
Hey Alex quick Q. How did you get the zip installed on your thunderhead backpack? Had mine for a year and the original waterproof seam type zipper is starting to split open when shes chokkas... Not ideal!
More often than not I lose fish just like you lost one at 10:00 min mark ......how do you keep that from happening, is there a particular tip like chasing them down or a rod angle that'd help ....TIA bud
As long as you keep good tension throughout the fight, if the hook hold is solid, you will be fine. If you can follow them downstream and get below or at opposite them it’s def better but like in that case, sometimes you can’t. You tend to lose more fish when they are downstream of you coz you are pulling the hook straight out of their mouths (imo anyway)
Good video again, Using kit the ordinary man can afford ... Encounter v Helios 3 $$$ Also bad habits! teeth v nippers/pliers, don't know what NZ denistry prices are like?
DONE!

I’ve caught a few hundred on mine over the last year. Definitely a good intro set up to get you on fish and sharpen your skills! Handles the bigs too!
Outstanding video mate. So cool to see that less expensive gear can still do the job.

Beautiful water and amazing trout - the perfect day! Thank you for sharing.
Awesome video. Orvis encounter it's a good combo for the money. Not only an entering level, also as a back up equipment. Done.

Love your videos, Alex! I hope someday to visit New Zealand. In the meantime, chasing trout around Colorado.
Done! Another awesome video. The colors on those rainbows are ridiculous.
Done, fished the same pools on the weekend with a lot less success, great to see the set up. I'll lengthen my leader next time.
Done! I know a new starter who would love this setup! Another great vid Alex.

I’ve found you can improve a cheaper rod with a great line and continue to improve your skills with minimal investment.
Can't I just tie my own tippet with a few bloodknots starting with 8 down to 4 ?
Super Cool!!!!! I recently got this rod and reel. I have been fishing my whoile life, but only fly fishing within the last 2 years. Because of you. Again a great video, Alex. Many thanks!!! I‘ll take a closer look at the set. The price is realy strong.

Impressive kit from Orvis.

@@TrippinOnTrout I see your point ok 👍 I’ll definitely try it out! Thanks!

Spare spools for the encounter reel? Where? I can't seem to find spare spools for that reel. Is it the same reel that is on the clearwater?
This video deserves more views
Done 😊
Thanks for another great Video Alex 🙌
Done! Thnx for the testing!
I have fished orvis rods for 50+ years..I love them
Done!
Be ideal for the Mrs to get started out

Done!
I really enjoyed this video.
Nice done!
are you out with Gareth today? I see he has the quad bike hooked up heading to the back country..... luck buggers I'm at work
Done A great day on the river showing anyone who wants to give flyfishing a go that you dont have to spend the world to go fly fishing
Great video as always
Hey Alex quick Q.
How did you get the zip installed on your thunderhead backpack? Had mine for a year and the original waterproof seam type zipper is starting to split open when shes chokkas... Not ideal!
It’s the same zip that was on it when I got it new from Fishpond. In my experience, once the zip goes, she’s toast mate!
@@TrippinOnTrout Bugger, might be a job for a canvas place or something, the seam zip is a pita not worth it unless you require an airbag!
Done
looks like a cool combo
Done Bro! I like the variety in your recent videos.
How do you know when you have to add more split shot? What tells you the flies are not going to the bottom?
HOW TO Set the RIGHT WEIGHT AND DEPTH to CATCH MORE FISH!
ua-cam.com/video/sYjrufoT-Qc/v-deo.html
Done great review and video
What weight split shot were you using?
BB I think bro
More of the product testing is a good idea dude. As well as everything else of course.
Done Greetings from Alberta Canada love the colors on them big bows

Thanks for the video
