We use a 5mm machine screw, set in about 3mm into the fretboard. It is important to centre to slot for the nut on the "zero fret" position to make sure it intonates correctly.
Decent job chicken head john but anyone who attempts this who isn't proficient in the use and sharpening of planes is very likely to experience problems like tear out digging in too deep etc.you obviously have some experience in hand tool use . inexperienced beginners are unlikely to get desired results.
Lol its not chicken head, it's chickenbone. Guys can used Sandpaper if they are worried about using a plane, even a beltsander if they are not good enough with a plane. A tutorial on how to use a plane is probably available somewhere on UA-cam. If people are learning, then it's good for them to see a person using a plane. He does also show a rasp being used which is what most begginers would be comfortable with.
Thanks John, it's always good to see another builders techniques and thoughts. All the best.
