  • Continuing our series of how to make a cigar box guitar, we show how to shape the "set back" headstock. It's a simple method, using no joints or glue, and we use basic hand tools. All you need are a handsaw, chisel & mallet and a half round file, the sort of tools that a lot of people will have in the garage, shed or in the cupboard under the stairs. If you don't have these tools, it's easy and cheap enough to pick them up. I'm a great advocate of learning how to use basic hand tools - you don't need expensive (and potentially dangerous) power tools, and I believe that learning these basic woodworking skills will stand you in good stead in the long term. I also believe that feeling how hand tools interact with the wood helps to develop a sensitivity and awareness of the grain, structure and strength of the timber that you are working with. I believe this is a vital skill, and that it is unwise to try and shortcut this learning process by jumping straight into using power tools as substitute for practical learning with hand tools. Some of the worst accidents with woodworking power tools happen because the operator has no feeling for how the timber is responding to or coping with the rate of feed or the angle of cut. Tools, whether power or hand operated require a degree of sensitivity and awareness of the interaction between blade and timber and the forces involved in order to get the job done in the most efficient and safest way, and to get the best results. This might sound a bit preachy, but for most people, making a cigar box guitar is a hobby activity, and should be a pleasure, not a chore, so enjoy the experience, relax, take your time and go with the flow. Take a little time to prepare your tools, look after them well and learn how to use them properly and skilfully. Give it your best shot and your efforts will be rewarded many times over, your skills will grow and the pleasure and pride in your work will multiply.

I have been looking at videos on making a cigar box guitar and was directed toward your videos and have to say that yours are the best. You take it step by step, explain things very well and use tools I already have. I went and got a nice straight of red oak so i could follow along making my first CBG.

Very thorough and patient demonstration, I like the way you're making this series beginner friendly. It's helpful for me to see how you explain things, so I can improve my own teaching. Looking forward to starting my build soon.

Hello. I really appreciate the fact that you give different ideas of how to do the different steps in your videos (i.e: using different tools for cutting a certain wood part) :)

People with 9 fingers who have had an argument (and inevitably lost) with a bandsaw might not want one any more. They are a great tool but need to be treated with utmost respect and attention at all times.

@@ChickenboneJohn My father, a carpenter, always told me, if you can do it by hand, than you can do it next time with power tools.

Spanish cedar is the preferred material - cherrywood sometimes has a distinctive and strong almond scent.
