  • We are getting very close to completion now, and this is a vital stage. Our in-house wiring expert Anne will take you through it step by step. There's no mystery, it is just a matter of being methodical and careful at each step. All you need is a decent soldering iron and some solder. Apologies to our US viewers, we call it "sol-der"...not "sodder"!
We are using a Japanese Hako digital soldering station, but any decent soldering iron should be OK.
Before using the Hako we used a basic Weller iron, which served us well for quite while, but the industrial number of soldering jobs meant that we were burning through replacement bits and irons at quite a rate. For typical hobby work, you don't need anything fancy as long as it has a decent wattage, and it's useful if replacement tips are readily availalable - one of the reasons we used a Weller prior to the Hako.
We have tried several different solders, and our favourite was Cheng Shen from Maplins, but with their demise, we had had to hunt around for a suitable replacement. We have tried solders with a similar composition and found that some was virtually unusable, being very resistant to flowing and leaving a nasty sticky residue from the flux, but the Weller solder we are using is great - it melts and flows quickly and cleanly.
Work tidily and make sure you tin all the parts and wires properly before attempting to solder them together. Check the finished work by looking at it closely and very gently trying to move the solder joints - it is possible to have a "dry joint" which appears to have worked, but which may only be making intermittent contact or be gummed together by flux, so proper cleaning of the backs of the pots and tinning your components is important.
Once you get the hang of it, you might come to realise it isn't that daunting a task after all! If you have any questions, just contact us on:

As a father myself, I think it's really cool that you, and your daughter Anne work together on your projects. That makes it more fun.

We are using 7/0.2mm equipment wire. Thats 7 strands of 0.2sqmm copper conductor, 1.2mm outside diameter approx. The shielded hook up wire is VanDamme Pro Grade Classic XKE

Is there any reason why the grounds shouldn't go onto the tab on the pot and then a single connection to the pot body from the grounding tab?

As long as you are grounding the correct tab, that's OK.

    What about earthing the strings?

You can see the string earthing wire being done at around 18.30 into the video. Here's how we earth the string anchor point. ua-cam.com/video/WC58hWnG3-o/v-deo.html
