The fake primitive ass 4-bit version is actually the original game Celeste is based on. It was released for Pico-8, a virtual machine designed for enthusiastic vg developers. The more you know.
I took over a month just to beat chapter 7 on normal difficulty. I had 1968 deaths in that level alone. I only went out of the way for 2 out of 47 strawberries.
The OST is the weakest part of the game. The best thing I can say about it is that Mirror Temple has nice vibraphones and the sound effects are really satisfying, but most of it is uniform EWI and lurid trance music. Great game though.
I love how Dunkey covers all these games that I had not even heard of. But they are secretly masterpieces. Top quality is rare even among indie games, so I often look over many good stuff amidst pile of garbage. I literally bought Hollow Knight right after seeing his video about it, and I'd never heard that name before that. The same happened with Celeste. And I love both of them lol
I bought Celeste day one (hour one) because I've been following the developer's games for nearly a decade and I knew it would be one of the greatest gaming experiences in a loooong time. But that's just me. :)
I agree with what you're saying, but IGN did review this game, and they gave it a 10/10. A lot of great indie games go unheard of, but the really great ones are picked up by the mainstream reviewers.
The great funguy Well, A Hat in Time got far less media attention than it deserved. It was an easy contender for Game of the Year 2017, even against the likes of Zelda and Mario. Yet, Cuphead completely overshadowed it by releasing a week previous. Don't get me wrong-from what I've seen, Cuphead is fantastic-but it kinda sucks that it essentially robbed A Hat in Time of a lot of media and UA-cam coverage because of release timing.
In between all his jokes and sarcasm comes serious reviews about great games, both new and old, which should be played by all. Still waiting on a full review of Gex 3 considering he's the only major UA-camr to express interest in GEX
I picked up this game, and the story was really what gave me my money’s worth. The story is simply amazing, and as someone dealing with anxiety, which is a core theme in the game, it helped to give me a whole new outlook on how I deal with it. So, thanks for telling me about this game, Dunkey. It’s a special one.
I was very surprised dunkey didn't mention the narrative which is very original. Madelain literally went from running away from her alter ego to digging down trying to find her and talk to her to fix her mental issues.
Donkey Kong Country: Bananas Celeste: Strawberries Super Mario Bros. 2: Cherries PAC-MAN: All of the above Ergo, Pac-Man is the greatest video game of all time, I rest my case ladies and gentlemen.
Actually there is a blue heart scattered throughout every level that unlock the final epilogue level. They’re kinda hidden, but you don’t HAVE to do the cassette levels.
It's Supa Meat Boy but with a friendly lady instead of a pile of decaying meat come to life. Seems fine to me. I like strawberries more than bandages anyways.
This is actually the same dev who made Jumper, which is where Ogmo from Super Meat Boy came from. This guy is like the godfather of insane indie platformers.
This is probably the number one reason I'm glad you made the decision to quit League, the quality of content you put out is incredible and leaves me feeling happy after every video, you're the only content creator on the entirety of UA-cam who I can say I watch every single upload of because they're so high quality, well made and put together in a way that keeps you interested at all parts of the video, not to mention that your reviews are great at focusing on all the great parts of a game but also where the content creator had fucked up a little, you're not afraid to put forward your opinion and you don't let people pay you just to say good shit about the game. Thanks for being you Dunkey, thanks for all your content.
Sometimes I watch his super old league videos and there's a real charm about them that I think doesn't exist in his later league videos, or even in the videos today. Those are the only reason I wish he hadn't quit sometimes, I feel like he was a lot more chill about the game, and he was also less formulaic about the jokes he cracks. Still, I can't complain much. He still puts out consistently great videos
That's the main problem, he just lost his spark for League, the final straw was Riot treating him the way they did. I do agree, his old videos are great, but the spark that he had for that game is long gone.
Yeah I used to watch dunkey purely for league and was at first sad that he got banned and would no longer make league content. But I have to admit this was like a major blessing in disguise. His content quality spiked through the roof and he's releasing so much better stuff now. His jokes are a bit more original and more well thought out and more clever. Now I watch every content he puts out. Kinda hoping for a few more Overwatch videos but if not it's no big deal. I'm wondering how he will like Monster Hunter Worlds. It's such a niche demographic game and not the most enjoyable for casual/new players getting into the game.
I do applaud Dunk for calling quits and removing that limiter to his creativity. I love his old League vids, I just wish the breakup wasn't was it was. That being said, Riot made the right call.
I'm sure others have already mentioned this but the main chapters have hearts too They are just hidden really well so they reward exploration and puzzle solving more than anything Other than that as many others have already said it's a wonderful game with beautiful music and an amazing story that hits you hard in the feels if you can relate It has tons of challenge content if you love to push yourself (some of which gets downright sadistic lol) and it very quickly became one of my all time favorite games
I'm currently doing chapter 9, and have just reached the final room. After going through that gauntlet over the span of two days, I can pretty confidently call it one of if not the hardest video game challenges I've faced yet. I can't even imagine the faint possibility of me doing chapter9 deathless, whereas with something like hollow knight's pantheon of hallownest I could imagine myself possibly pulling off hitless in the distant future (not that I will try lol)
Holy shit, no way. I played this game for years in its PICO-8 form when I had a break from work. I was even about to complain that it stole its mechanics from a free PICO-8 game. I'm super stoked to see the original author's turned it into a real game, because the free one is fantastic. Also, for real, if you're reading this, google "Celeste PICO-8". The original first game is free to play in the browser.
Heads up, the hearts that you collect to enter the final epilogue level can be found in every level. They're all hidden and you have to complete a puzzle or platform your way over to it. Other than that, super solid review!
With a couple exceptions, the Crystal Hearts are much harder to obtain than the B-Sides, unless you look them up. I used B-Side hearts to initially open the gate to the Core, as dunkey did.
This is the best review by a legitimate donkey I have ever seen. Animals with such low intelligence have never seemed so learned and scrupulous in their game reviews. I give you 11/6
After just beating Celeste, I'm honestly pretty disappointed that dunk didn't bring up the story or any of the characters. The combination of great story AND gameplay was what made this game so amazing, so only looking at half of that equation makes the review feel a bit incomplete to me.
@@kakyoindonut3213 Badeline is part of Madeline. It's her own creation. It's everything Madeline thinks are her bad parts taking physical form in the mountain. But they're not her bad parts, there's a complex mixture in there. The whole mountain climb is an analogy for a battle with anxiety and depression culminating in the acceptance of herself and the willingness to work on her positive and negative qualities. The last regular chapter (7) is accepting that there are things that need to be worked on but putting them aside to work together and finish the climb. It's also quite obviously an allegory for Maddy Thorson's own life experiences, difficulties with mental health issues and coming to grips with being trans, albeit unwittingly at the time.
just curious how? i remember discovering this when i was going through the gnarliest anxiety of my life and i said "this is the best game ever it's teaching me how to overcome my struggles !!" but it really didn't. it's just a great game that shines a good light on this subject, but thinking about a feather or realizing you need to accept your anxiety isn't going to heal you all by itself. if you did seriously have your life changed by this it's awesome but i can't really think of how
Hey, PICO-8! We're using it as our dev tool in one of my game design classes. Really awesome to see a tiny game on a silly engine evolve into a full release.
This game's story hit me hard when it eventually got going, as it touched on a lot of deep-seated personal issues I'm sure many other people also resonate with. But holy shit do I have to emphasise that the character personality and especially the phenomenal music amplified every emotional moment, the frenetic joy while platforming and the sullen empathetic self-reflection in Madeline's struggles, to perfection. Genuinely in love with it. Had honest heartfelt happiness for the adorable little sprite named Madeline when the end came rolling by, and Theo is an absolute bro. Oh, it also plays like a dream I guess.
Yeah. I can't emphasize enough how much I love this game. To bad the dev's said they aren't planning to make a sequel because they though this game was complete. One thing though is that I feel like theo's story wasn't delved into enough. We saw a little in the temple but that's pretty much it.
Celeste is a video game that is about over coming your depression and anxiety, although the movements are simple you can do so much with it, celeste is a video game worth playing if you want a fun and difficult game, 0 / 5, shares the name as one of my exs
@@humzahusain7430 fun lil factoid: it wasn't actually intended to be a trans story, the creator didn't even know she was trans until after the game was done
It's funny how you went from some nerd to INDUSTRY CHANGING REVIEWER in such a short time. Think about it, Celeste's makers must be wetting themselves over your great review.
lol dunkey doesn't hold that much sway over if people will buy games or not. he gets a lot of views but that doesn't mean the devs are looking strictly for his approval.
that's what you think but I bought Owlboy, Flinthook, Hollow Knight even Undertale and maybe a few others because of dunkey videos. I don't think anyone actually gives a fuck about big review companies like gamespot and ign, maybe some super normie casuals that haven't figured out they're all corrupt yet
daquist18 The thing with dunkey or other big UA-camrs is the exposure they give a game. Sure, 95% of people watching may not buy the game, but if 5% did that could be £1000's that the Devs wouldn't have had coming in before. Personally I'm not going to buy this game, but I know people who would most likely enjoy it, so I can tell them about it. Scale this up to a large viewerbase and it can make a massive difference for a small game company.
Amazing review for an amazing game. Dunk, you kept it really concise and perfectly presented your opinion and why you like the game in the span of less than 5 minutes, and that in itself is an accomplishment. But what's an even greater accomplishment is Celeste. Seriously, if any of you reading this comment haven't played it yet, play it. From the controls, the soundtrack, and even the story, everything has a polish that you don't often see in indie games like this. Thank you, Mr. dunkey for introducing me to one of my favorite games, and here's to 2018 to have even better games.
This game has a special place in my heart. I love how comprehensive this game is. It explores mental health by making the main character the protagonist and the antagonist at the same time. It also show how it’s difficult to go through mental health, by making the game hard, and without the option to choose difficulty. That’s how to merge themes and story with gameplay. I play hard games like bloodborne and dark souls, but I beat those games just for the sense of accomplishment. But with celeste, I cared about the main character and I wanted to see her overcome her anxiety. Empathy for her what drove me to beat the game.
Just bought it for the switch a couple hours ago, and DAMN do you have to play it. The controls are so tight and the levels aren't too long, but feel just long enough that you can sit down and beat one in about half an hour. The most shocking thing to me is the story, even having just played it for an hour, I am already so attached to the characters and the plot. Would ABSOLUTELY recommend
Wait did I just watch an actual game review by the dunkmaster?! :0 How many strawberries did they pay you for this?! You should have negotiated for hearts sun.
Celeste and hollow knight are both masterpieces. They are equally near perfection at their own genres. I'd say that most people that like one over the other is because of the genre
@@pleasestopsubscribingtomyc3360 its obviously a sarcastic comment, pointing out how some people, especially switch gamers, still call it a hidden gem despite it selling like 10 million copies lol
To be fair, there are hearts outside of the casette levels, so you don't have to torture yourself with that difficulty if you don't want to. (Though some of the hearts outside of the casette tapes are just ridiculously well hidden.)
Sometimes I think the hotel level was meant for the second to last level. The B side is such a big step up in difficulty there when compared to all the other B sides.
I just started the game today, played 2 hours, and that B level for the hotel is WHOOPING MY ASS! I've made it through so many screens and I can't tell if I'm even close! It's so god damn hard!
Chris J tell me about it. I just finished the story today and then decided to do the b sides and i think i died over 1000 times on the hotel level. Beat it tho
@@dylan_Coat there's a speedrunning trick during elevator shaft where you aim a dash downwards but let go of down in 3 or less frames, which keeps a crouched hitbox when you dash. the crouched hitbox is just enough to completely bypass the wall of dust bunnies that oshiro creates. it's pixel perfect and frame perfect, although other chapters have demodash tricks that grant a bit more leeway (especially chapter 9)
That's a speedrunning trick though, nowhere in the game is a demodash required. Might as well mention the chained hypers in 2a, that's basically 5 suuper precise jumps

This game is the greatest platformer I've played all year. I fucking love how beautiful the assets are and how entrancing the score is. The mechanics were creative, the replayability was great, the side-b levels were challenging but satisfying. 10/10.
"[these side challenges] are less about pixel perfect precision and more about using your moveset in smart, creative ways" second half of chapter 9: *hello there*
I died like 2000 times throughout the 30 hours it took me to beat this game and I have to say I don't think there has ever been a game that has made me cry tears of joy and happiness like Celeste has.
Granted, at the time this review was released Farewell wasn't a thing. That being said, WHEW do you definitely want at least 15 Hearts for Farewell, and ideally all the C-sides. The parts after the heartwall on Chapter 9 are both tricky and require knowledge of how to wallbounce properly AND introduce one final technique you need to navigate it. But damn if it wasn't worth it, each and every one of the 4.2k deaths I had while doing it.
Celeste is amazing for multiple reasons I can only sum up in a paragraph. The **story** is gut renching, and you can tell it is really personal and a therapy session in itself. The **music** by Lena raine won awards and is so well written and has layers of symbolism and motifs intergrated. The music is so well **integrated,** You can understand the story again just by registering to the music, as there can be up to around even 4 different tracks per stage, smoothly integrated, allowing room for silence. The **game play** is smooth and satisfying af, with many small details like coyote time and corner correction which make it feel nice and by being short screens, it can be ultra hard, but never unfair, and allows for more precision because screens are shorter. That's why Celeste worked. It was not one thing, but all those combined. With all that, it doesn't matter what fills out the screens, it's already so well done. -sincerely Uel
FYI: The "minigame" Dunkey mentioned was actually the prototype to this game. It was made in four days for the PICO-8 fantasy console (which I love to bits) about 2.5 years ago.
The only thing better than having a sense of humor is having a sense of humor *and* a sense of sobriety. This isn't a game that lends itself to laughter, or to tension or excitement, as much as to contentment and satisfaction - and that's hard thing to be while also being a challenging game - and to have the capacity to make a thoughtful video like this *alongside* all your other vids without even sounding like a completely different person is an incredible thing for a youtuber.

Don't get me wrong-from what I've seen, Cuphead is fantastic-but it kinda sucks that it essentially robbed A Hat in Time of a lot of media and UA-cam coverage because of release timing.
annddd????
In between all his jokes and sarcasm comes serious reviews about great games, both new and old, which should be played by all. Still waiting on a full review of Gex 3 considering he's the only major UA-camr to express interest in GEX
I picked up this game, and the story was really what gave me my money’s worth. The story is simply amazing, and as someone dealing with anxiety, which is a core theme in the game, it helped to give me a whole new outlook on how I deal with it. So, thanks for telling me about this game, Dunkey. It’s a special one.

Don't forget AVGN. He also puts a lot of work in his videos and thoroughly reviews games. But I agree Dunkey is Tier 1.
I do applaud Dunk for calling quits and removing that limiter to his creativity. I love his old League vids, I just wish the breakup wasn't was it was.
That being said, Riot made the right call.
I'm sure others have already mentioned this but the main chapters have hearts too
They are just hidden really well so they reward exploration and puzzle solving more than anything
Other than that as many others have already said it's a wonderful game with beautiful music and an amazing story that hits you hard in the feels if you can relate
It has tons of challenge content if you love to push yourself (some of which gets downright sadistic lol) and it very quickly became one of my all time favorite games

The minigame version in the newest Celeste is a throwback to the PICO-8 version

Heads up, the hearts that you collect to enter the final epilogue level can be found in every level. They're all hidden and you have to complete a puzzle or platform your way over to it. Other than that, super solid review!
this. They are hidden very well but I found one blind and it was great.
With a couple exceptions, the Crystal Hearts are much harder to obtain than the B-Sides, unless you look them up. I used B-Side hearts to initially open the gate to the Core, as dunkey did.
Arkatox I dunno, I had a super easy time finding the crystal hearts compared to the B-Sides... maybe I suck at platforming tho.
Well I very definitely suck at puzzles.
And to enter the last b-side you have to get all the other hearts, including the red ones :)

After just beating Celeste, I'm honestly pretty disappointed that dunk didn't bring up the story or any of the characters. The combination of great story AND gameplay was what made this game so amazing, so only looking at half of that equation makes the review feel a bit incomplete to me.
Dunk usually doesn't bring plot into his reviews generally.

4 hearts rlly isn’t that bad. I think it prepares you for the ninth chapter.

The only thing better than having a sense of humor is having a sense of humor *and* a sense of sobriety.
