"It ends up feeling like a fan tribute rather than something a team of professionals worked on." That's funny, because A Hat in Time, an ACTUAL fan tribute, came out a whole lot better than Yooka Laylee.
I think one of my bigger problems, and one that helps explain what you mean about how Banjo Kazooie's consistency in moment-to-moment gameplay shining through to this day, is that the little quills aren't put in any semblance of an order. The musical notes often could be found 5 or more in a row, or at least existed in an order that made sense like various spots on the first hill you could get easier with the roady run later on. It felt good and made sense. In Yooka Laylee, they're placed in zones as if they are this great secret item, hidden as if they didnt have the value of a penny. It's inconsistent at best, and coupled with the needlessly large (and empty) open worlds, lazy game design in truth. That to me was its great disappointment, and told me that they didn't really know what made Banjo special.
I do like that Dunkey's vids often play on expectation and with the knowledge that the fanbase knows what drama's going on at the time of uploading, but just in case someone happens upon this and doesn't know why Jon was removed it's actually because he very, very thoroughly implied that black people are genetically predisposed towards criminal activity and he said much more explicitly that he was concerned about Arab people poisoning the gene pool.
I had a feeling with all the UA-camrs basically telling me to like the game because it was a spiritual successor to Banjo, that this game wasn't going to live up to what people had in mind.
A Cat I've seen both good and bad reviews for it. There's already a patch released for it, and after the patch released (fixing a lot of the technical issues) reviews were better.
technical issues aren't the primary problem. technical patches don't fix reused characters, underdeveloped ones, glued to the floor nopersonalities, blank level maps, and poor musical choices in areas. Unfortunately these are problems that should have been seen and tackled. I feel like the devs on this game worked hard on early work and let it fall off from there, instead of creating an outline for an entire story and world they wanted to create. They had the creative vision but they lacked to planning from the looks of it.
In all honesty i think dunkey is right. This game does not step up to Banjo and it's really just that. Maybe, if the characters were more deep, more comedy centered and if the maps were smaller then i wouldn't mind.
BeastlyBogan Holy shit, yes. If they rewrote that game with an actual writer (as opposed to gluing words on to the paper indiscriminately) a remaster of that game would be amazing.
@@edwincenteno7266 I mean, if you talk about Yooka, you have to talk about Banjo. It's kinda the entire reason the game exists, and is attempting to be a successor to.
@@Winasaurus Yes. Especially since these are ex Rare employes, i mean they had the kinect as a Boss because microsoft made them do games for it. But saying out of tha bat that Banjo is your favourite game comes off as if he has all the authoriy to scrutinize the game. Which is a little sad because the games is solid and he got some wrong information about the mecanics of the game which is confusing if he was doing his shtick ( which is wierd if he made mistakes on purpose for trying to be funny) or an honest review.
@@edwincenteno7266 Having Banjo as your favourite game definitely gives your opinion more weight when it comes to talking about it's spiritual successor. The controls just don't feel as consistently tight as Banjo, like he said there are levels of polish just outright missing, why do some sections look like they've been made by interns that don't know what they are working on, and others look honestly great? It's such a mess of ideas and the execution is wobbly. Some parts of the game feel unfinished at times, or worse because of some deadline or something.
@@Winasaurus Playtnic has said they will continue to add to the game. I don't know what kinda control dunk is talking about but there tight exept for the camera, though ir doesnt break the game, if it feels unfinished to you it's probably because yooka has less levels but bigger while banjo has more but smaller.
Honestly I only keep coming back for his hollow knight segment. This vid and his 2017 are the only mentions well ever get from Him. It’s a shame too because that game deserves a review from dunkey
Every time you’ve mentioned Hollow Knight in any video you’ve done, you’ve praised the game which lead me to eventually buy it, and Hollow Knight is now one of my favorite games of all time, so make a dunkview of Hollow Knight!!
@@a-ha4940 ehh he makes dunkviews of older games. it's not out of the question. and Hollow Knight is going to go down as a classic. So it could happen.
I really hoped that this game was going to live up to my expectations and that Dunkey was wrong about it, but now that I've purchased it and reached the final level, I've realized that I agree with everything he says. Spiritual successors aren't a bad thing, but when they lose their identity to the games they're imitating, you end up with Yooka-Laylee
For the record, Jon changed his opinion on BotW like two days later. He loves it now...but still isn't convinced it's a "true zelda". -the fuck does that even mean-
It means that he feels they took out too many familiar elements for it to really still be considered a Zelda game for him. He may warm up to realize that those elements had to go to create a unique new Zelda experience or he might not.
that is not really a good argument. not everyone has the disposable income to just "buy it" and most rely on reviews in order to effectively spend what little disposable money they have.
This review is spot on. Having backed and now completed this game. It's tedious at best and infuriating at worst. It basically comes down to zero polish. For every good thing about it, there's an equally awful counterpart. It's summed up in the video perfectly.
momiji lily I don't like it when people say that Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts is a bad game because it's different. I actually appreciate when a franchise tries something new.
Personally I like Tooie even more! Don't know why but I just like the environments way more:) the game feels darker and the transformations are just super creative!
Banjo Tooie is a fantastic game. In some ways I had more enjoyment out of Tooie than the original. I was giving a lot of thought to what you said about how Tooie is the opposite of the original, and in some ways I can agree. There is a clear push toward more complex content, and we see that right at the start of the game when we consider Kazooie has a 3 minute intro and Tooie has a 12 minute intro, and many more persistently relevant characters. Had a true successor (threeie) came out I would have liked to see them find a middle ground, because I think Kazooie could have benefited from more development. What really established Tooie as such a great game for me was the mechanics. Flying a ship, splitting up, flamethrower kazooie, using kazooie as a rifle lmao, playing as mumbo, and I mean come on, you can even shoot grenade eggs out of kazooies butt. Tooie pushed the envelope, and it definitely made mistakes, but I can't fault RW for that.
I love them both. Tooie clearly had a TON of ambition behind it. While I understand why some people don't like it, I just think it's solid as hell. The atmosphere alone to me is enough to play it, then on top of that they added in so many interesting new moves and mechanics. It's just so good
I know a lot of people thought Tooie's levels were too big and confusing but I always liked all the space and getting lost in them. It was really immersive
he didn’t introduce me but Hollow Knight a easily my favourite game. He did a mini review in his Best of 2017 video but i doubt he’ll do a full dunkview until silksong comes out if at all
You mention Hollow Knight in no less than three different videos. That's why I bought it. Played it. loved it. Got ruined by the traitor lord like 50 times in a row. uninstalled it. played it again, loved it again, still can't beat the traitor lord, and eventually I just gave up. Totally worth it.
@@psst_hail_sithis I did. Still lose. Most bosses I needed 2-3 tries. A handful I needed 4-5. I just can't beat the traitor lord. I've unlocked everything that is unlockable without killing him. I've tried a dozen different crest combos. I got nowhere.
Hello Dunkey, I imagine you won't even see this but I'd be happy to have a response. I'm curious about your comment on Unity. I assume you're just poking fun at how a lot of people get ahold of the engine and make some pretty shitty titles although I don't see the worry in using it as great titles have been created with Unity. Hearthstone, Ori and The Blind Forest, Seasons After Fall, Furi, Inside and funnily enough you listed Hollow Knight at the end of the video which is actually powered with the Unity Engine. Anyhow I'm not angry or anything like that although I'm just curious as to what engine you would've liked for Yooka Laylee to be made with.
I had no idea when I was making this how many great games were actually made with unity. The only games I associated with it were the ones with the "made with unity" splashscreen before them. Which was usually donald trump tier stuff.
I use Unity and it's not a bad game engine. The thing is that it is free and easy to use, that is the reason why some mediocre game exists, anyone can use it. Despite that, the community that has, helps a lot the beginners and great games have used Unity as well.
It's because many different engines offer free or reduced price versions and then also commercial options. Commercial options (thousands of dollars or revenue share) don't put the splash because they're making that $$$ off the game and aren't going to make the developer advertise their product if they're being paid fat stacks.
Oh wow, I'm surprised you replied to me, thank you for your time. Yeah, I can see your point. There is a garbage bin worth of bad and strange games stemming from the engine which could give it a bad name for sure. I used to think the same way about it but then played games like Inside and Ori which surprised me when I found out they were made with Unity. Ain't the tool that makes a game great it's the people using it ( Although a good engine certainly helps ). Anyhow, thanks again for your time and have a good day. Keep up the good work bud.
It's not your fault that you didn't know Dunk, it just wasn't visible. The reason bigger games don't show the Unity splash screen is when you get the Pro version of Unity, one of the features is that it removes the Unity splash and you can replace it with something else if you want. The free version has a forced Unity splash screen, which is why so many shitty games have that splash screen, is because the developers aren't serious enough to get the Pro version. This has given Unity a bad name. Unity is one if the most popular engines out there, shortly followed by Unreal Engine.
I do believe having a game made in Unity means nothing to its quality, games like A Hat in Time, Sonic Runners and Sonic Superstars, Cuphead, Lethal Company, and even the Super Mario RPG remake for switch all were made with Unity. It all depends on how the developers are able to utilize it.
Dunkey your review on Banjo-Kazooie 64 was on point on so many levels. To see Yooka-Laylee fall below the bar is really sad. Was really looking forward to this one :(
it's just one review bro, don't be discouraged I'm gunna go try it out myself despite dunks opinion cuz it looks fun and I really enjoy the games soundtrack from what I heard so far
Ya before you give up on the game, check other reviews. I've seen plenty of reviews saying the game is actually fun. Dunkey has his own opinion, while you might have a different one
Dunkey's reviews are actually usually very consistent and spot on, it's the viewer's job to dissect what could be a joke and what could be seriousness, or a mixture of both
well technically all these games in the 2000's would be amazing or extreme evolution it's partly the bar being set higher with modern technology as well, but it's also that these said games are just bad too.
Xone.L If people don't respect others opinions, even if they differ from our own, there will never be anything but chaos. It's pretty clear you're one of the people that just don't care about having a good society.
I still like the game, but I would love it a lot more if they made smaller levels like in Banjo-Kazooie,the amount of stuff to explore in these small levels made the game so charming in my opinion
I respect your opinion of banjo tooie and you are correct there are somethings in that game that do take a while to do which was my complaint as a child as well. Regardless of its downfalls however, i really enjoyed that game. I think if they remastered it and allowed you to skip cutscenes, it would make it less monotonous.
shafz1996 I don't know... if this is what we can expect from crowd funded games from spiritual successors and long waited sequels then I'd rather entertain the idea of a game that I would want to play in my mind and go on with my day.
Zachary Wilson-Long Wrong, thr Kickstater funds are being used to develop Shenmue. The only thing Sony is doing is helping with Publishing/Marketing. Publishing is not the same as developing and Sony is not paying the folks at YS to make Shenmue.
Idk, I thought Yooka-laylee was fun. I also liked Banjo Tooie. Level design in Banjo Kazooie was probably better than Tooie, but I enjoyed the extra powers and stuff you unlock. Plus, Dragon Kazooie.
I've actually been hoping Dunkey would weigh in on the situation of free speech being challenged on UA-cam. It would definitely be out of his comfort zone as an artist, and could lead to ramifications in his personal and professional spheres, so I totally understand why he hasn't. However, I also feel that since he's a respected figure who makes high quality content (similar to JonTron), he would be able to weather the storm and find his fans and fellow professionals stand by him. It's definitely a question of preference and conscience, and there's no easy position.
Best interest for dunkey is definitely don't get politics, beliefs, and youtube drama all onto his channel, because those topics only divide communities instead of uniting them. He doesn't want to lose any portion of his audience by throwing out his opinions.
Free speech isn't being challenged by youtube. People who talk over video games for a living having to learn that you shouldn't casually say racist things in public even as a joke in a professional atmosphere isn't censorship. No one's saying they can't say these things. Companies are just saying they don't want to work with people who say these things. It'd be super fucked up if you were forced to work with people you didn't agree with and actively damaged your public figure. But as a whole it's best that video game funny people like dunkey stay out of politics, generally speaking people come to their channels to hear them talk about funny video game stuff. Not hear their hot takes on whatever garbage some other youtube nerd was moaning about this week.
Nope. You are nitpicking and biased. I win bye bye. The game definitely has flaws especially with it's camera, but I am enjoying it on the Nintendo Switch, with all it's updates and improvements. Digital copy for $10 btw. I was not a kickstarter pledger and did not have the expectations that it would change the industry or bring back 3d platformer collection-challenges as the main genre of games.
Just replayed this game again after a couple years. There's been quite a few patches (although most of the glaring issues were fixed very early on), and most of the nitpicks I and most people had with the game have really been ironed out. It was a really good experience going back to it, I even felt some nostalgia at many parts even after the short time it's been out. Music is amazing, exploring is fun (although physics can be a bit wonky, and Flappy Flight just breaks a lot of the game lol), minigames are probably the low points but nonetheless mostly engaging and challenging. I've played BK, BT, and now YL again over the past year and honestly it would be hard for me to pick my favorite (probably between BT and YL tbh). This game was severely over critiqued imo and its legacy was tainted pretty unfairly early on, a lot of which had to do with Jon.
If anyone is looking for a new, good indie 3D platformer, I cannot recommend A Hat In Time enough. While the character models are a bit offputting at times and the first level is a bit slow, the game really picks up and grows into a masterpiece as you progress. It's like half Mario Sunshine, half Psychonauts.
I know this is a 6 year old video, but I loved Banjo-Tooie. I like it more than Banjo-Kazooie. I remember that being the game i was most excited for as a kid.
Celvro it seems more like people are angry because he isn't turning on his friend. These lefties just want to ruin his career and burn him alive (figuratively, although I suspect many of these people want to literally kill jontron because they don't like his opinions) Jontron fans thought his joke was funny. Butthurt children are the ones who are upset at dunkey
Person Guy Yeah, how dare Dunkey not be a complete disloyal dickwad and burn the evil JonTron. I disagreed with JT, but I don't live in America so I don't know one way or the other. But he's entitled to his opinions and I can watch him regardless. Honestly I swear we have more "Helen Lovejoys" by the day.
Person Guy I agree not to turn this into a circle jerk but I don't think people realize how many creative people are behind JonTron you're pretty much condemning a huge creative Community if you're not willing to give JonTron the benefit of the doubt
+Person Guy i'd imagine itll generally be better for dunkey to keep himself out of that kind of stuff for his own image and atmosphere of his videos as well. regardless of his position on such issues it keeps him out of any "controversy" and keeps his videos lighthearted and enjoyable for everyone
Nah, the game is buggy as all hell. Did you know that the PC version doesn't even have a "B" button mapped on the keyboard? For many dialogues, in order to quit talking to the character, you need to actually "Quit To HUB".
After learning some unity myself, its pretty damn clear that the problem was the developers lack of knowledge on the engine. Everything feels very bare bones and stock. Stock particles systems, stock lighting systems, the control feels off, probably because they didnt change the gravity settings in the options, its what gives unity games that sorta floaty feel. I think the game needed more time in hindsight, give these devs a chance to actually learn how to use unity to its full potential, you can make GREAT games in unity, but if you dont change settings, or you use the tools as basic as possible, your gonna end up with a game that feels like a unity game, not as a game.
I feel like this game would be like 100x better if they waited until fall and worked out all the crap dunk talked about. Its kind of weird how some levels feel 10x more polished than others
The game lacks no soul and is way too big, seriously just go and play the level click clock wood in Banjo kazooie. A level with 4 seasons, the sense of immersion and atmosphere in that level is amaing and that game was made in 1998...
Yeah, fuck off. Literally ALL of the nitpicky shit dunkey complained about were "issues" banjo had, yet were praised for them. "Oh, but banjo was made 15 years a.." fuck off with that. Banjo was made by a company that was being given basically an unlimited budget by Nintendo, with a MUCH larger team and much more specific technology to work with (given it was an N64 exclusive, they didn't have to use a system that works along all platforms). Honestly, I couldn't see this as a review. I see it more as a "These guys fucked with my friend jontron so im going to complain about everything and fuck with these guys". Like, this is a GAME REVIEW. What does mentioning the removal of jontron have ANYTHING to do with the game?
Yes, if only they could've predicted Dunkey would make a video about a game that wasn't released if they waited til Fall, and then took everything Dunkey talked about into consideration and then completely reworked the game from the ground up, and then released it.
Honestly a game that's very inconsistent with tacked on ideas is what older games had. When I play a buggy ps1 looking game on pc, I'm like, this is exactly what it was back then. I love inconsistent games. They're charming in their own way. Watching this, hearing its a mess, makes me want to try it more.
Had both kazooie and tooie as a kid, tooie was way more in depth with more stuff in it, kazooie was a very easy straightforward platformer I actually beat in a month

That´s how you know the review isn´t biased at all!

-the fuck does that even mean-
it clearly means Breath of the Wild is the Metroid game we've all been waiting for.
It means that he feels they took out too many familiar elements for it to really still be considered a Zelda game for him. He may warm up to realize that those elements had to go to create a unique new Zelda experience or he might not.
Unshaved Malevolence It means he wanted another "Get item, hit giant eyeball" Zelda game.
Isn't the point of BOtW to be different, to revolutionize it.
It means you missed on playing Zelda games during your childhood or you wouldn't dare write such a blasphemous comment.

Bro you really are an amazing reviewer amd your videos are timeless just amazing
Damn, that makes me sad. I was really looking forward to this being a good game.
Lucretzia Good is subjective. The majority of reviews have been mixed to positive. Play it yourself and form your own opinion.
It's basically an uninspired clone of Banjo-Kazooie.
that is not really a good argument. not everyone has the disposable income to just "buy it" and most rely on reviews in order to effectively spend what little disposable money they have.
I think it is very good honestly. Just form your own opinion.
>Just throw away money on mixed reviews in an age of inflated scores! It'll be fine~!
This review is spot on. Having backed and now completed this game. It's tedious at best and infuriating at worst. It basically comes down to zero polish. For every good thing about it, there's an equally awful counterpart. It's summed up in the video perfectly.

I played Banjo Tooie much more than Kazooie as a kid. I loved the larger worlds and the new abilities. I never even finished Kazooie.
I spent countless hours just playing around with dragon kazooie
That's odd, tooie is the much harder and bigger game completing kaooie is a breeze compared to tooie. I like kazooie more, but tooie is great.
Same
Banjo-Tooie is a fuckin' MASTAPIECE!
ok
It's just so good
Same. I actually liked the 2nd game much more because I felt like I had to work for every puzzle piece rather than just have it handed to me.
I know a lot of people thought Tooie's levels were too big and confusing but I always liked all the space and getting lost in them. It was really immersive
I've lost all hope we are getting a Dunkview of Hollow knight. Your videos introduced me to that wonderful game.

Unity is one if the most popular engines out there, shortly followed by Unreal Engine.
you've finally shown us why gex is the bexst and that makes me happy
I do believe having a game made in Unity means nothing to its quality, games like A Hat in Time, Sonic Runners and Sonic Superstars, Cuphead, Lethal Company, and even the Super Mario RPG remake for switch all were made with Unity. It all depends on how the developers are able to utilize it.
A hat in time was made in unreal engine 3.
I frickin LOVE Rayman Legends! It’s one of my absolute favorite games ever! I’m really happy you feel the same!

Ya before you give up on the game, check other reviews. I've seen plenty of reviews saying the game is actually fun. Dunkey has his own opinion, while you might have a different one

I mean the Kickstarter wasn't even for funding the game, Sony used it to gauge interest and then published it.
Zachary Wilson-Long Wrong, thr Kickstater funds are being used to develop Shenmue. The only thing Sony is doing is helping with Publishing/Marketing. Publishing is not the same as developing and Sony is not paying the folks at YS to make Shenmue.

JonTron's free speech wasn't challenged on UA-cam. JonTron's biggest challenge is his own racist beliefs.

Nah, the game is buggy as all hell. Did you know that the PC version doesn't even have a "B" button mapped on the keyboard? For many dialogues, in order to quit talking to the character, you need to actually "Quit To HUB".

First dunkey video I ever watched. I've been a die hard fan ever since.

TheMrGamer his complaints about the game design had nothing to do with jon
@TheMrGamer Game review? Funny, I don't see that in the title ..
Cope. Older games were NOT always inconsistent. Maybe PS1 games for the most part, but too many masterpieces
