Several of the Old Line restaurants in New Orleans now have female Exec Chefs or Exec Sous. In Dallas and Houston it's very likely that in the best restaurants that your food was either cooked or at least handled by a female Chef. In Austin it's certainly not a 50% to 50% split male vs female but it's creeping much closer especially in new restaurants. In her time if Julia Child had gone to a bank to try to get a loan to open a restaurant she probably would have been flat out denied JUST because she was a woman. She was the first female graduate from Le Cordon Bleu but that wouldn't have mattered in a time when her husband would have to talk to a bank manager just so she could have her name on her checks from the bank. I don't think people understand how different everyday things used to be. It was a VERY different world!!
Celebrity chefs have killed the industry for countless people that actually put in the effort and time to honestly aquire the credentials to become a chef. It's such a flaky industry it makes me sick.
The restaurant industry has been a tough business, long before the rise of the celebrity chef. A great restaurant in a bad location can fail, just like a lousy restaurant in a good location. I remember several celebrities in Chicago (i.e., athletes) kept opening and closing restaurants at the same location. Even though it was at a busy intersection, parking in the vicinity was terrible. It wasn't near any large apartment buildings, office buildings, theaters, or nightclubs.
If you've ever eaten at any of the restaurants touted to be owned by a celebrity chef, you'll know right away that image is everything and not necessarily the skill behind the cooking ware. Most of these "cooks" would never be able to hack it in a real kitchen, but cooking shows are all about marketability and image. If you can get a true chef with those added qualities, all the better.
Real chefs, aka classic trained etc. doesn’t mean they are the best on camera. I turn to my gal Julia. She was a lovely teacher and ate simply at home. She was a natural teacher. I started watching her when I was very young. Almost 60 years later, I truly believe she led me to the cooking world, which I did professionally until it became too tough as a woman (back in the day). And I absolutely love Nigella. She makes me feel so happy to watch her voracious appetite and onscreen presence. You don’t have to be a chef to turn people on to cooking.

I've been to Guy's restaurant in Foxwoods, Connecticut like three times and its not that great. Just convenient for a quick bite when you are in the casino.
His places are hit or miss. I think he cranked out more volume of restaurants and quality suffered. I've been to a few, none were fine dining but more basic Americana, or American chain style places done from scratch. I've had great burgers, nachos, breakfasts, drinks, solid BBQ for outside texas etc, but I've also had misses sometimes in the same visit. Like I went to his Johnny Garlics, I don't even remember what I had for diner, it wasn't bad but forgettable. But for a app I had their 40 clove garlic soup, and damn that was a really good garlic soup. Its fast food but I wish he'd open a chicken guys near me. I've been twice when visiting disney world and its not sit down good, but its damn good fast food. I'll occasionally find myself thinking about those loaded fries.

Most modern celebrity chefs are terrible cooks, its usually their under chefs doing all the work. They put most of their focus on selling their name and image rather then perfecting their craft. Emeril for example, was notorious for buying out other restaurants and slapping his name on them. There is more money to be made off mass marketing and selling your "brand" than there is to being just a good cook.
You do not have to have culinary training to be a chef, but not all cooks are chefs! Until you have commended a brigade in a formal kitchen, you are not a chef! I can cook, and keep up with the best of the chefs have many friends that are. However, no matter how many recipes that I have created and developed myself I am not a chef. If you want Michelin grade food, you visit a restaurant that has been awarded one or more Michelin stars. However, you can get excellent food without having to visit a Michelin restaurant.
I've wondered if Guy was really a good chef, because Diner he says everyone cooking is the best he's ever eaten. That can't be, right? I know he's is quite successful. I guess Flay is a better cook? My favorite chef is Flay, and John (the one that flay his first job) He's one Guy's shows a lot.
