Well, let's start here with the word, "chef". A French word, that means "chief". A leader of cooks. Not a glorified cook. If you don't supervise cooks, with hiring and firing powers, you are not a chef. The word is thrown out there, as if anyone who wears an apron, and maybe has some skills, is a chef. Let's get real, shall we?

Most "chefs" are cooks like Rachel & wow! Julia Child. Just because you want to be great in the kitchen doesn't mean you want to be a chef. Julia trained at the original Cordon Bleu because her husband was used to fine dining & in her words all she could do is burn water. No quotes as it's been ages since I heard her quote.

@@tixximmi That's changing though. And I mean Executive Chefs or Chef owners not just Pastry or Garde Manger.
Several of the Old Line restaurants in New Orleans now have female Exec Chefs or Exec Sous.
In Dallas and Houston it's very likely that in the best restaurants that your food was either cooked or at least handled by a female Chef.
In Austin it's certainly not a 50% to 50% split male vs female but it's creeping much closer especially in new restaurants.
In her time if Julia Child had gone to a bank to try to get a loan to open a restaurant she probably would have been flat out denied JUST because she was a woman. She was the first female graduate from Le Cordon Bleu but that wouldn't have mattered in a time when her husband would have to talk to a bank manager just so she could have her name on her checks from the bank.

The restaurant industry has been a tough business, long before the rise of the celebrity chef.
A great restaurant in a bad location can fail, just like a lousy restaurant in a good location.
I remember several celebrities in Chicago (i.e., athletes) kept opening and closing restaurants at the same location. Even though it was at a busy intersection, parking in the vicinity was terrible. It wasn't near any large apartment buildings, office buildings, theaters, or nightclubs.

If you've ever eaten at any of the restaurants touted to be owned by a celebrity chef, you'll know right away that image is everything and not necessarily the skill behind the cooking ware. Most of these "cooks" would never be able to hack it in a real kitchen, but cooking shows are all about marketability and image. If you can get a true chef with those added qualities, all the better.

Real chefs, aka classic trained etc. doesn’t mean they are the best on camera. I turn to my gal Julia. She was a lovely teacher and ate simply at home. She was a natural teacher. I started watching her when I was very young. Almost 60 years later, I truly believe she led me to the cooking world, which I did professionally until it became too tough as a woman (back in the day). And I absolutely love Nigella. She makes me feel so happy to watch her voracious appetite and onscreen presence. You don’t have to be a chef to turn people on to cooking.

I can cook, and keep up with the best of the chefs have many friends that are. However, no matter how many recipes that I have created and developed myself I am not a chef. Everyone comes to me for advice on how to cook or for recipes but I am not a chef. The word chef has been so bastardized. It’s ridiculous. Yes....she talks to her audience as if they're 3 years old and puts sprinkles on everything. Seriously? Are you an adult?

Guy as a person is great and in the things he does. He is not a Chef, was not trained as a Chef. His degree is in hotel management and entertainment. So stop, he cooks like crap. I have 2 of his books and the ONLY recipe I found is the Enchilada sauce.

This is just click-bait. Why would you put chefs that are terrible cooks then talk about how most of them are actually good cooks? 🤔😑

most youtube cooks aren't really cooks either, they never cooked anything, they are just doing videos of the same old recipe, and copying the same mistakes that a novice would make, , , ,everything is fake.

Totally unfair re Rachel Ray. I learned how to cook w her show. She’s a home cook wh is completely legit. She doesn’t claim to not be a good cook. Sexist much?!

So people who make good food but are honest about not being "chefs" should be dragged across the coals? Guy Fieri's chili, with a few changes, has won me contests. But... He's not a top chef so go after him? I laugh at most Mashed videos. If I watch them.
