  • You may have heard of lucid dreaming, the type of dream where the dreamer is aware of dreaming. Is lucid dreaming a real phenomenon? Sleep expert Matthew Walker explains how much we know about lucid dreams so far.
Tech Insider tells you all you need to know about tech: gadgets, how-to's, gaming, science, digital culture, and more.

    --------------------------------------------------
Following is the transcript of the video:
Jessica Orwig: What if we could control our dreams?
When most of us dream, our thoughts and actions are involuntary. The dream plays out as if we were watching a movie. But not all dreams are the same. There is another kind of dreaming called lucid dreaming, which is more like playing a video game than watching a movie.
Matthew Walker: By definition lucid dreaming is simply the act of knowing that you're dreaming whilst you're dreaming.
My name is Matthew Walker. I am a professor of neuroscience and psychology at the University of California Berkeley.
Most people actually think of lucid dreaming more in the sense of actually beginning to control what you're dreaming. So, you gain volitional control and you decide what's going to happen during your dream.
Orwig: Frequent lucid dreamers claim that they can control many parts of the dream such as teleporting themselves to another location, learning to improve real-life skills, or even eating fire. It might sound far-fetched. And until recently we lacked the technology to prove if lucid dreaming was real or not. But a series of recent studies has shed light on the phenomenon.
Walker: Scientists have designed experiments and they’ve been able to demonstrate objectively that when people say that they're doing something in that dream that they actually are.
Orwig: In 2012, scientists reported results from one of the first experiments that objectively measured lucid dreams using fMRI scanners. fMRIs measure the rate of blood flow to different areas of the brain, so they can relay information about a person's thoughts and actions simply through a series of images.
For the study, scientists first asked participants to clench their fists while they were awake. This lit up key areas of the brain on the fMRI scanner. After that, participants were asked to fall asleep and dream about clenching their fists. Sure enough - similar regions of the brain lit up in both cases.
Lucid dreaming comes naturally to some, but many of us have never experienced the sensation. However, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible.
Walker: How can we actually become more capable of lucid dreaming? Well, it's a little bit tricky, but you can certainly try to tell yourself that you will remember that you're dreaming whilst you're dreaming before you actually fall asleep. So, try to go through a mantra chant as it were. Some people actually try to do deliberative things whilst sleeping, like turning on the lights in a room. And that helps them to become aware that they are dreaming at the moment of dreaming itself and therefore they gain lucid control.
Orwig: Those who can already control their dreams with ease say lucid dreams aren’t only for entertainment but can also be used to expand one's conscious boundaries.
On the other hand, lucid dreamers have also reported frightening accounts where they have trouble distinguishing reality from the dream. In some cases, this can be a sign of mental illness, and should be taken seriously.
But why do some people have the ability to lucid dream but not others? And what is happening in our subconscious that triggers the experience? There’s still a lot we have to learn about the causes and effects of lucid dreaming.
Walker: It seems to be only around 20 to 30% of the population are actually natural lucid dreamers. So, perhaps if it was so beneficial mother nature would have had all of us being table of lucid dreaming. And the fact that we’re not perhaps means that it's not necessarily beneficial. But we actually don’t know. Maybe those 20 to 30% of people who do lucid dream are at the forefront of hominid evolution, and they are going to be the next species of preference. We just don't know.

What's weirder is when you entered a lucid dream, then woke up; did your usual morning routine... then realized you're still sleeping.

It happens a lot with lucid dreamers, our brain doesn't like the fact we are aware that we are dreaming and try to revert this by reiniciating our dream, waking us up or making us unaware again. There was this time when I was having this lucid dream and then a realized my brain made me go back to unaware state in the middle of it.

I was too scared to talk to anybody or do anything because It’s the equivalent of going to a random person in real life and smacking them (as in how it feels just like real life). You have to focus on sleeping while it happens. I have lucid dreams where I'll be sleeping in the dream, and then I imagine where I want to be. And at first it's black and then like a movie, where I want to be just appears. It happened to me 5 times last night. And in one of the dreams I was actually telling my family "this is a dream I swear, watch this" and I'd go in my pocket and pull out a gun. It was so weird. Last nite was def the weirdest of them all and that's why I'm watching this video now. But I can always recognize it's a dream if something truly insane is happening and then I can make myself wake up. Lucid dreaming and then manipulating dreams are two dif things

I did it for about a year. I slept with a pen and notebook under my pillow. Would meet people I wanted to meet. Go to places I wanted to go. Had sexual experiences I wanted to experience. Wrote down a song and was so excited to see what I had written down. Only to wake up and realize the pen didn’t work during the dream, but did that very morning. I think things from other realms should stay there. So I stopped with the craziness. The mind is a wonderful thing.

I see people trying to follow the techniques for lucid dreaming, but honestly, I think it’s bs. Here is a TECHNIQUE i do to prolong lucid dreaming.. just keep thinking of the next thing thats gonna happen in ur dream or what you are gonna do as it will take form in ur dream and at the same time you are in controll. Also, if you messed up in the middle of the night and now you are awake, just stay relaxed/calm and think about the last part that happened to your dream, keep thinking about it and you will find yourself back to the dream. Also becareful of oversleeping, you might be enjoying too much you forget to wake up. hahaha enjoy

Yes I can do all this plus some. I've been doing for over 15 years. You are doing the right thing by just forcing your eyes open during a nightmare. Editing nightmares is a a dangerous game. There are things that will latch themselves on to you and the pipeline that you make to the dream world. They will wait for the opportune moment to make their escape to our reality. You won't know they are here with you until it's too late. This my warning, please be careful. There things about lucid dreaming we dont fully understand yet.

All though after I have these dreams for about a few hours to sometimes a few days these fears are A LOT more prominent and affect me deeply mentally until they eventually fade away such as many other feelings like love.

I can easily lucid dream, since I was 6. Playing video games is the key. I can get control of it easily like I can be a different person or at a different place like in a movie where two to three scenes are going together. Also I can change my appearance. And if I read a book before sleeping I dream of the same book and I can be any character. So I change my decision the whole story changes. How cool is that!

I somehow calmed myself saying I'm dreaming it's fine and was going to play fortnite but I decided to fly and the same thing happened Then I was in a totally different place after that with a basement with sewer and I helped some people or something and two dogs chased me when I was flying I felt that darkness again so I stopped and when the dog was about to bite me it paused then went black like a movie and I woke up feeling dog bites on my foot

Awesome video! I remember lucid dreaming frequently when i was younger and it is a brilliant experience. The capabilities of what you can do in a lucid dream is astounding. It helps open up your ability to become more imaginative and creative, which is brilliant if you are a designer, engineer musician or artist. For example, whilst dreaming I could be in a fight and have 5 large spears thrown at me into my body and rip them out of my body and throw them back at the opponent without waking up or getting injured in the dream. I could teleport, fly, do huge jumps that could make me leap a mile into the air as well as cover huge distances. I could have superhuman strength, hold my breath underwater forever, survive through fires which would usually burn and kill you in several seconds. The list of things are endless and i truly miss those moments. Unsurprisingly, my favorite film ever is Inception and i enjoy it so much because it somewhat relates strongly to the concept of lucid dreaming. Its a beautiful crafted film and if you have ever lucidly dreamt to the level of expertise i have you will realize how powerful that movie is and how much you can relate. PLEASE make another video on lucid dreaming where you can look at ways to increase your chances of lucid dreaming and how to control the dream. For begginners who first start, it can be rather disappointing because having the ability to control and plan your dream can be overwhelming and cause you to wake up from the dream.

A lot of the time I'm a different person in a different time period in what feels more like a memory than a dream. Things that happen are things that I have no knowledge of in the real world. Sometimes I wake up confused for a second or two as to where I am, who I am, and what I look like; it can be quite frightening.

I remember dreaming of a person chasing me with a knife in their hand and in the dream I remember running and then wishing I was super fast and I did actually run very fast but the guy was still right behind me whenever I looked back. I then wished to teleport some place safe but wherever I went he was still behind me. I only lucid dream, and I have been astral traveling since the age of 12. Whenever I lucid dream I feel like I’m watching myself from the outside while being in my body at the same time, and I’m always also aware of where my physical body really is In this realm. I’ve always been a little different than most if you will. I’ve been seeing spirits my whole life and didn’t know everyone else couldn’t until I was around 5. When I go to sleep at night I lay flat on my back and mediate into a lucid dream or astral projection. I get up just about every 1-3 hours to reflect on where I just was then back at it again. I never wake up tired either, but many times I don’t feel like I ever even slept. It’s like I just have a vision wake up and repeat. I’ve mastered turning off my thoughts and can fully relax my entire body pretty much instantly. I learned all of this from wanting to be in control of when I astral project and what I experience when I do. Everyone can do it but, just like building muscle you have to work on and strengthen these abilities.

In response to how dreams are, yes, they feel quite real, with enough practice you can experience them with all your senses, although it is limited to the brain's perception of these senses, for example, when you fly you feel the speed and the wind in your face, but it isn't exactly what you feel when you fly, but what you think it feels like when you fly, based on memories that you form in real life

When you feel pain in a dream and you are sure that it was real that's bc our minds are so powerful that in dreamland we still feel the same like as if we were awake. The difference is the physical damage sustained in a dream will only effect ur dream body. If you've ever wondered why you wake up after you die in a dream its bc our brains can't comprehend death bc its never actually been through it (idk how this would apply to ppl that have died and been revived)

I have been doing this for years. It stopped for a while, then I went back to it again. I have been lucid dreaming for the last week. I wake up really tired though, like I have not slept at all. I cannot necessarily control what I dream about before going to sleep. However, when I dream (me being a different person), there is context to it. Like I suddenly know who I am, how I feel, what my history is, and then control the narrative of the dream from there. I control what the person in my dream does. My dreams are very vivid too. And if I ever get woken up by the need to pee or something, I go back to sleep and consciously decide to go back into it to finish the dream. This morning, I remember opening my eyes and checking to see if it is morning yet, then I went back to sleep to hurry myself up and finish all loose ends in the dream so I feel like I am not left hanging.
The last two recent lucid dreams, I had the feeling of deja vu. Like I somehow feel the familiarity of the dream as if it is was either an old dream or an old memory while still subconsciously reminding myself that I am dreaming.

I can control my dreams when they are unfavorable or scary. Sometimes I have little control and sometimes I can control dreams very easily. I can't tell every time I dream, but I can tell quite a few times that I am dreaming and shape my dreams as I like. Anybody having similar experiences? Most people here are commenting that they can't differentiate between dreams and reality, but when I dream I can tell, and the dreams don't seem very real.

I have been lucid about 4 times so far but I am not always able to induce the lucid dream state voluntarily it sort of "just happens" sometimes. When it does, it is absolutely unbelievable!! For those who have tried playing games in VR - its like having super high fidelity VR Googles on - you can literally move and touch things just like in real life. Its incredible. Also - I am taking higher than normal doses of Melatonin which seems to aid in me becoming lucid once in a while.

Today, I lucid dreamed for the first time. I started to have night terrors when I was a boy, that turned into sleep paralysis, then to sleep paralysis/nightmares (Hallucinatory dreams), and now lucid dreams. I recently resolved a lot of my trauma, so my theory is that it is linked with spiritually/mental health.

Lucid Dreaming comes naturally to me, and until a couple of years ago I thought that everyone could lucid dream. After that I felt so lucky, but I was confused when others told me that they couldn’t lucid dream. Guess I’m part of the 20-30%!

I used to dream walking to the bathroom and felt relaxed as one does when peeing standing up. I peed my sheets many times when I was around 13 years old. Lately I dream very vivid lucid dream. I learned that I can dream and interact with people in my dreams. I read several times one can only dream about faces one has actually seen in real. I do not have that. I interact with like in star wars or Harry potter like people and lifeforms. Many of them over the years. Marvel characters only known to me in my dreams. Actual real stories in lenght and detail. In other words i dream star wars or enterprise movies all on my own. I make friends with some others are not. I could often write a book or draw characters from my dreams. I like it. Most dreams are positiv. At times i want to shout or yell but cannot. The feeling you are suddenly mute. That is scary a bit since it always involves danger I'm my dreams. I wake up exhausted and a bit frightened until i realise it was a dream
