A battery fire produces heat, oxygen and fuel. It is the triangle. That’s why it is hard to put out. The only thing you can take away is heat by extensively soaking the burning pack.
You could always buy a cheap metal cabinet and line it with ceramic bricks made for a forge or rock wool or the fire insulation used in commercial kitchen hood pipes.
Even just a couple layers of drywall would do wonders, that's what they use in fire safes. Gypsum plaster is insulating, and basically fireproof up to some wicked high temperatures.
I picked up a Steel filing cabinet to store mine in, but the drawer fronts wouldn't hold any decent pressure if something went bang. and if it's not locked, i guess the drawers could open enough for stuff to shoot out of. good idea, hope it's affordable
Good review Tools. Personally, I think it's also very applicable to RC car persons. RC car lipo batteries cop a lot more then a normal coordinated power tool operators power tool battery, as in yes power tools get dropped, but not nearly as often as you land or don't land big jumps in RC, or come to a rapid stop at 100+kph because a tree weighs a lot more then an RC car. But still, a very good torture test and I do believe the product did the intended job. It kept the fire in and runaways are chemical reactions, so not easy to extinguish.
I'm not sure I'd bother with the electrics as by the time the alarm had gone off, it was too late to stop by cutting the power anyway. I'd just use a battery-powered smoke/heat alarm and a cheap extension lead as they need to be replaced after an incident anyway. It did a good job of containing the fire, I'd be concerned about the smoke output in an enclosed location. It should probably be vented to the outdoors when installed. Do they sell a rebuild kit for the electrics after a fire? They should have probably used a fire-resistant cable for the detector such as FP100, as the detector going on and off isn't great - especially after so little time.

Bosch/Sortimo also have their SafeBOXX for safely transporting lithium batteries to jobsites. In theory they could also make a Packout unit like this as well, just needs to be moulded from a different plastic.
The problem is we have so many lithium batteries in our homes, you're not going to put them all in a fire proof box, it only takes one battery to burn down your home.

I mean they could make that plate without holes so the molten crap dont drip down on the cables. So the question is: do you take the risk to burn your house down (insurance pays I guess) or do you spend a big chunk of money in forefront? Looks like a Macpak, the size of a Macpak, but fire proof for battery storage. Allegedly. Maybe a single charger coud fit in there? You should test a bunch of that cheapo ones if you can afford to blow up a few more batteries :)
The concept is all wrong. The battery's failing cant be stopped however the fire can. Decently seal the box not unlike a fire safe. If it gets hot inside just fit an air to air heat sink. Then has a similar array of gear inside but have an additional CO2 gas bottle say like one you use on a beer tap. {Cheap and Safe} Alarm goes off, turns off internal power and turns on the gas. Its going to give of gas so a spring loaded flap to prevent over pressure. It doesn't need much to displace the air and keep it at 1 psi or so inside. It would drop the temp a bit as the only stuff heating it up would be the internal short. Less flame if any and it would probably prevent the box from being completely trashed. A 10kg bottle would last an hour easily. Easier clean up. You could also add a bit more protection by having a sand bag in the top in a light easily melted plastic bag. Gets hot, bag melts and sand falls covering contents. I just feel sorry for the multi tool and the impact driver....
@@GaryPatterson-o4d Using fire suppression gas is a proven easy method of fire control. Been around for many years. The thing is if you are charging inside a container you should be ducting the possible exhaust outside you don't want lipo fumes in your house.
They aren't really designed for household use. They are designed for workplaces, educational facilities, fire stations, etc. Very few people would ever pay for these systems. In the video, I mention that you can get them with suppression systems, but the purpose of the test was to see how the cabinet held up.

A cheap option to achieve a better result, better seal on the door and venting. You can use an old kinara.
My parents house burnt down after an 11.1 volt Radio control helicopter battery caught fire. The battery was just sitting on the bench.

That is an overpriced 3rd party product that holds next to nothing and is made of ABS plastic... no thanks.

C02 not really effective with battery fires. Although better than nothing as it can stop material adjacent from combustion.
