New Volvo V90 review: has the king of estates returned?

  • The V90 feels everything a premium estate should be - a refined cruiser, with a comfortable, plush cabin and a hefty load space. It feels odd to say this about a big Volvo wagon, but those who are after ultimate boot size will look elsewhere. For everyone else after an upmarket load-lugger, the V90 totally merits a place on your shortlist.
    James Batchelor reviews the new Volvo V90 estate in sunny Spain!

      I don't mind him too much, I don't really like any of the consumer UA-cam reviewers all that much because they're more presenter than journalist. But I will say this about this guy, all his videos are full of little grammatical errors that irk me. Like "there's two engines", no no it is "there are two engines".

      Don't completely agree with you, the A6 yes but I think the new E-class is sexier in the sedan version. And the Volvo V90 is ALOT sexier than the S90. The sedans rear is ugly as hell.

    Strange comments about the V70, it has been an excellent estate car well made inside and out with high quality materials, exceptionally comfortable and luxurious. So a very good rival to the german options and I think more individual.

    • @bempey
      @bempey 7 років тому +1

      What I didn't like about my V70 AWD was its thirst for fuel. Style was great, seats were expected Volvo superb comfort, cornering with Michelin Pilots on the 17" sport wheels was ridiculously great. My A4 Avant lacks the space of the V70, especially for rear leg room. But they're both comfy for road-trips, and the 2.0t/DSG goes a lot farther on a smaller tank.
      Still, in a decade from now, when they've depreciated to a reasonable price, I can see buying a V90.
      Wish they sold the diesel ones in Canada. Then the cost of ownership would be much more intriguing.

    Good Review - This estate looks great inside and outside Volvo have hit that spot on - but weird with the boot size.
    A strong hybrid also sounds like a good solution for a stronger powerplant option.

    All this fuzz about luggage volume..
    I mean, it's rare to see a fully loaded, (up over the window line), boot. So come on, a few liters here and there, who cares?!
    It's like -oh no! My car's top speed is only 248 km/h (~153 mph), but my neighbors car does 250 km/h (155 mph).. Who needs the speed anyway!?
    Yeah, I know, the German autobahn..I'll been driving there a couple of times every year since 2006, and trust me -it's not a big deal if your car is 2 km/h slower..

    Here it goes. Leather is not standard "maeby" in certain engine config?
    But the biggest problems, the 8 speed gearbox is not very refined also the D5 engine sounds like a tractor when compairing with germans and the HUGE problem is the road/tire noise "a problem that the XC90 also has"

  • @satnitcboy
    @satnitcboy 8 років тому

    James, you no doubt know that a lot of Auto Express viewers are in the US (ditto CarBuyer, CarWow, Telegraph Cars, thanks to the cast of characters.) Decision making for a full-size estate (wagon)here now will be more interesting. BMW have long since stopped marketing the 5 Series estate, also Audi the A6 Avant. ( They sell us only the 3 Series and the A4 Allroad.) Even Volvo has for many years offered the XC70, but not the V70. Merc, though, has owned the division with the E Class. (And they don't ship us any C Class estates. Well done, as That battle has belonged to Audi and BMW, and lately, the V60.)
    The V90 should do well against Mercedes, as it challenges on price per pound of luxury and design. As for the smaller cargo capacity, it's relatively minimal difference, and in return Volvo echoes the pretty shape of the V60 - or even the jag estate. It seems a nice balance between all the traditional Volvo qualities and a more shapely, modern look.
    What I haven't warmed up to yet is what seems to be over-generous application of wood trim. About half the amount would lighten the feel of the cabin - and perhaps not applied in the molded plywood styling. Otherwise, I'm looking forward to trying one.

    • @satnitcboy
      @satnitcboy 8 років тому

      As in the XC90, I like the color of the wood, and it's definitely got the skandesign vibe. Just the large panels seem too much. Maybe it will feel less so in the flesh. Or in the grain, as it were.
      BTW, in case you didn't know, we now have no real American wagon. Not even a Fusion to match your Mondeo estate. The Cadillac CTS-V is out. We don't have a Japanese wagon in our market, either (considering Subarus crossovers for this purpose), though I'd like to see Mazda send us the 6 estate you have.

    I've owned four Volvo's in the past (XC90 V8, S80 V8, XC90 3.2 and XC70 T6) and loved the brand and it's products. I will no longer be buying Vovlo's though as they have traded away interior space to improve looks but it goes against the whole purpose of an estate and I detest 4 cylinder engines, especially at this price point. 4 cylinder engine with never match the refinement and performance of a 6 cylinder no matter how many turbo's you put on it.

    • @vonrichthofen5734
      @vonrichthofen5734 8 років тому +1

      In fact they hired a designer from VW called Thomas Ingenlath (so much for the Scandinavian design), thats why the new Volvos are pretty similar to their German competitors. They dont stand out anymore like the Volvos from earlier days

    • @hmhmhm4321
      @hmhmhm4321 8 років тому

      No they did not. Robin Page did the interior design. Thomas Ingenlath was only hired for about 1 year ( 2012-2013 i believe). Do some research before commenting. And Volvo`s interiors are faaar from similar to german ones.

    • @vonrichthofen5734
      @vonrichthofen5734 8 років тому

      Dan940 You do some Research, smartass. Ingenlath was hired in 2012 in is head of design ever since. Wether you like it or not, a German creates the new Volvos that you seem to like so much, get over it.

    • @hmhmhm4321
      @hmhmhm4321 8 років тому

      Haha i totally misread you comment, for some reason i thought we were talking only about interior design, not design in general, my mistake. And yes, Ingenlath is still working with Volvo, dunno where i got the info that he was fired, wasnt a very reliable source it seems. Though, most of what i said in my previous comment still stands accurate. Robin page does the interiors.

    • @vonrichthofen5734
      @vonrichthofen5734 8 років тому +1

      Dan940 Didnt know about Mr Page doing the interiors, but nowadays it's international design Teams anyway, the days of Italian, English etc desgin are pretty much over, but People love to stick to their stereotypes. The new Alfa Giulia for example was designed by the Chrysler design Department in the US, and still you hear People going on about that "passionate" Italian design and so on.

      Polestar don't really excite me. They're not exactly pure Munich or Alpina or Quattro GmbH. They are more of an amg line or s-line lower grade watered down performance team. Until they sell a 500-600 plus hp super saloon, like the other Germans do, then that's the target segment I would be interested in

    • @volundrfrey896
      @volundrfrey896 8 років тому

      They have made concepts of cars like that, and not insane concept that could never reach productions. More proof that they actually can make cars which can compete with the germans. They're a proper racing team and know how to turn family cars into speed machines. The issue has been that volvo has stopped every highpowered one so far. But it seems that it may change with the new volvo line up. Although that's just rumours, but I think the Chinese want to challenge the Germans in the sport market too. Not just the family market .

    Just watched your review of the v60 which you state is the "spiritual successor to the old v70" yet you say this v90 is the "replacement" for the v70, so which is it?
    Is it that the v90 is as big as the v70
    but the v60 is the price of the v70
    in real terms there is no real replacement to the v70, for size and price volvo has just switched off one of its strongest models,

      You have to think about who's buying these cars and their needs. The diesel engines are effective for long motorway journeys but still have enough pulling power and performance for overtakes and daily driving. The T8 engine, which has 400hp, is surely powerful enough and there is the possibility of Polestar upgrades too. If you're after performance estates then the E63 and RS6 are designed for that purpose. People buying these cars will not have power as their number one priority!

    One fundamental question - why should I choose it over BMW 5 or Merc? They should do one simple thing - make it RWD default, this would place it over Audi for plenty of DRIVERS (those who actually enjoy driving) and widen market reach. Seems Volvo is still under rule by same people who absolutely can't learn from history (unlike Alfa ones (with Giulia, who in fact created great machine which will, I'm sure, steal some M3 / M4 fans (including myself))....But hey, it's Volvo after all, it has to be boring!

    I expect Volvos to have big boots not compromised for the sake of a fancy looking roof slope. quite literally form over function. if it's going to be as small as an a6, I'll have an A6 instead.
    shame, I was really looking forward to this car.

      Sorry! do not agree, it looks at least as good as it rivals, meaning it is well resolved overall and it has a very decent stance for such a large car - Rest is Brand Fan club, meaning personal identification with the cars main DNA + its heritage. (like I am a BMW fan)... And lets not forget it looks like a Volvo - The concepts Volvo did over the last years has spawned some complete temporary and well proportioned cars including this Estate - Volvo classic rigidness plus modern dynamics well executed.

      +HesteBremse Contrary to what you may believe, sir. I hold no such thing as brand loyalty, as you so blatantly stated . You see I simply couldn't give to Shih Tzu about the heritage of any vehicle no matter how rich it may be. I base a vehicle on certain criteria's: Aesthetics, function, practicality and value. I find this particular vehicle quite titilating especially the larger XC90. But to each their own

    The king of estates has always been the Mercedes e class t-modell, and judging from the pics I ve seen from the new gen, thats not gonna change anytime soon. Sorry, Volvo, but nice try.

      I also think that the Volvo looks better from the outside. I just think the Merc is the better Estate car, it has a bigger boot, a wider range of engines and optional AWD. But if someone would gift me a Volvo, I wouldnt say no :-)
