Volvo V90 2017 D5 (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

  • Volvo S90 debuted in Detroit in early 2016, soon followed by Volvo V90 in Geneva. Design mimics that of a coupe concept shown in Frankfurt in 2013. Long bonnet, wide grill, headlights with LED lights with what Volvo calls Thor’s Hammer. Long-looking side line with relatively high window line makes V90 seems very long, but at the same time very light. In fact Volvo is about the size of Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Chrome exhaust ending looks business from a distance. You'd think V90 is a sporty car. But it’s a 2 litre diesel.

    JUST Ordered a V90 Inscription D5 AWD, will all optionals in Switzerland the car arrives to 80,000 CHF (77,000 Euro). tested the car, the engine is not so powerful, but comfort, space for passengers, noise reduction and quality of the B&W entertainment are better than Audi A6 and the new MB E class. And I hope they will not make a restyling every 2 years. Clearly in my opinion.

      Marco P. If you want more power just chiptune it, 1000 euros to up the hp to 285 and torque to 560Nm, that from 235/480.
      Should make it a bit quicker!

    I don't know where you are buying this V90 but in The Netherlands this D5 is just under €100k
    But what an awesome car, I've had the pleasure of test driving a D5 similar to the one in this video, my god what a car. It surpasses all its rivals easily.

      For reviews in English I use German prices. I know you guys get taxed like hell in the Netherlands. For 100k you can get a well-equipped XC90 T8 in Poland or Germany.

    Really pleased to see you review this and like it, as it's a car I'm considering and I trust your reviews. I'd really be interested to know if the screen seemed any faster than the XC90, as I've heard complaints of it being laggy on the XC90. With the V90 being newer, hopefully it may be using newer faster hardware.
    This may well be the safest car on the road. In IIHS small offset tests, this, the XC90 and even the old V70 do so much better than almost all other cars.

      I never had any problems with Volvo infotainment. It's iPad responsive/fast. That being said, I also heard as owners start installing more apps on the system, it may get a bit slower. You'd expect a car, where miniaturisation is not the greatest challenge, to have enough computing power to handle a couple of system updates and a few apps, but I guess developers underestimated software expansion.

  • @DoriKei

    Great car... I have an S90 D5 AWD 2017, and regarding the consumption info in this video I can say that in a trip from Germany home 1200km I have made an average of 6.6l/100km being quite heavy on the accelerator. Speed was most of the time between 140-180kmh. That is a great result. If you follow your speed limits or a bit more 55kmh city / 110kmh extraurban I have made 5.4l average. These are real life numbers...
    Otherwise the B&W is genius (I have a Meridian surround in my Jag XJ) and is better than the Meridian, comfort (I am running it on 18" wheels) is also great. Definitely a better choice than A6 or E class in my opinion...

    I had a look at the V90 the other day at my local dealer, because I'm interested in the V90 Cross Country, which will be with them later this month [Jan 2017]. First impression is 'Wow this car is low'. Second impression is how nice the cabin is and the great seat comfort. Third impression 'Oh no! How do I get out of this thing?' The door top frame is so low that I can't get my head out. What are they thinking!! The only car I've previously had that problem with is the current Peugeot 2008. No problem whatsoever with my current Qashqai or CR-V. I so want to like the XC V90, so I hope that the raised ride height helps with exit from it, but I have my doubts. I've put a pre-order in for it, but if I don't fit when it arrives, they know they will have to stock it and retail to someone shorter [and thinner] [and/or younger]

    In terms of MPG, how efficient the D5 in a V90 compared to a D4? Also, is there much of a difference for ever day use between D4 and D5? I'm after tested numbers rather than official figures

    • @MarekDrives

      It's a design package.

    • @neilold9645
      @neilold9645 7 років тому +3

      Sorry Marek, you're incorrect here. The Polestar badge is because it has an engine SW upgrade, the Polestar upgrade package. The style-kit have nothing to do with the PS badge, it just another option you can take. Cheers!

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 7 років тому +1

      You are right. I underestimated Volvo here. It's a 1.000 euro (roughly) software update boosting power and torque for D5 engine.

    • @haistapaska2446
      @haistapaska2446 7 років тому +2

      Dave Travels polestar tunes the car from 235 hp to 240 hp and increases the torque from 480 nm to 500 nm i would say waste of money

    I really like the V90/S90, but I worry for longevity of an all 4 cylinder line up, and know I'd get frustrated by lack of physical controls in long run.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 7 років тому

      These engines are around for a couple of years now. I'd be worried about T6, but the rest is not particularly strained. You get used to the tablet pretty quickly. Partly because you stop fiddling with the settings ;)

    • @hedydd2
      @hedydd2 7 років тому +1

      Actually the price of the D4 V90 [the Cross Country] is very competitive indeed. I get a well specified V90 CC well below the price of a similar specification Discovery Sport HSE Lux and within £2500 [more] of a fully loaded Honda CRV automatic.

    • @BillyNoMates1974
      @BillyNoMates1974 7 років тому

      Thing is I wouldn't class the XC90 in the same class as a Discovery sport HSE. At this price point your right the Honda CRV is too expensive

    • @hedydd2
      @hedydd2 7 років тому

      Remember that we are talking about an updated LR Freelander here. I would certainly class the Volvo V90 CC and it together. They are prime candidates for being my next car. However I do like my current CRV very much, but it is too much money at £38,000 compared with a Volvo at £40500 and the Disco Sport at £42750.
      Those prices do include an industry buying group negotiated 10% discount on Volvo and Land Rover, plus free metallic paint in the same deal from Volvo. No discount on the Honda. The LR and Volvo dealer also offer a better price for my old CRV than the Honda dealer by £1000. So price to change comes down to £1500 more for the Volvo than CRV and £3750 more than CRV for the LR HSE Lux with options. CRV out of it this time I'm afraid.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 7 років тому +1

      Is Volvo in Canada more expensive than Audi/BMW?

    • @davetravels9273
      @davetravels9273 7 років тому +1

      The Allroad in NA is an Audi A4 Wagon, which is one size smaller. The A6 Allroad, which is no longer offered in North America, would be comparable. It used to be offered, so maybe it will comeback.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 7 років тому +1

      In Europe Volvo slots somewhere between VW and Audi in terms of price, VW usually being the most expensive mass-market brand, and Volvo calling itself premium.

    • @kevinn1158
      @kevinn1158 7 років тому

    A bit disappointed with luggage space. 560L is small for this segment. It should be at least 600L plus given the size of the car. I think it is partly due to a high boot floor. They must have designed it to accomodate the hybrid battery.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 7 років тому

      And AWD, yes. It looks much bigger from the outside.

    • @Hogberg-
      @Hogberg- 7 років тому +1

      Matthias Oldenburg remember that the VDA-litres in the luggage compartment are measured from the floor and up to the "visibility cover" (just underneath the windows).
      this measurement is often misleading.
      I have a V70II which is supposed to taket 575L (if i remember correctly) and my brother in law has a passat estate of the same year as my car, and it can load around 600-605l.
      But he can not load as much in his passat as i can fit in my V70.

    I drove a brand New V90 with 18" wheels at a dealer and found the suspension rather uncomfortable with a significantly higher level of noise than e.g. the previous E Class (Avantgarde). Also the seats are not to my taste. Overall nice looking and a good alternative but I would rather go for an E Class or 5er BMW for their greater refinement and comfort.
