all these "why characters don't sound like they used to" video are always fascinating. there's always more to the voice acting history than I think their is.
@16-BitGuy Literal doesn't mean fitting. It means using the most literal definition of each word. "Mist" on its own means manure. I think the most fitting translation for the whole phrase would be something like "Ah, crud!", since it's not as vulgar as "crap". In German, "Mist" is a very tame word. There's even a famous children's TV character that uses it as his catchphrase. So, "crud" is more fitting than crap. "Crap" is like saying "Scheiße" or "Kacke", which is a bit more vulgar.
One key info missing in this video is the very first person who voiced Wario in English: the late James H. Sawyer Sr., who voiced Wario in the now iconic Super Mario Land 2 commercial, aka *Obey Wario, DESTROY MARIO!*. Sadly his discovery was only made long after his passing. Not to mention Chikao Ohtsuka, whose performance gave Martinet a run for his money.
For me, Chikao = (Japanese) Master Xehanort His son, Akio, took over this role after his father died, so he (the son) plays two versions of Xehanort. As the English-speaking voice actor for that character was (and for most of the fanbase will always be) Leonard Nimoy (yes, Captain Spock)
Live CG puppetry has been a thing since the 90s. Henson pioneered it (natch). I've also seen some quite wonderful live 2D puppetry, done by controlling movements and mouth flaps as you voice the character. Tomthinks does an amazing job with it, though he is using some pre-prepared assets.
A lot of "modern day" tech isn't exactly new. Same for a lot of tech trends. A lot of it is old stuff renamed and sold under the guise of "it's modern". Same stuff, new name.
For me it's the complete opposite. Doubling down on Wario's deep voice was the worst part of Charles's modern Wario voice and I heavily dislike that Kevin continues this direction. His early voice, like in Mario Golf 64, Wario Land 4 and Wario World was peak Wario and it wasn't just deep and gruff.

WarioWare was I think the only games that kept Wario’s normal pitch. Which is why he sound deep in those games Also his normal voice had become rougher anyways. Probably because of Martinet’s age.

Something about Kevin Afghani's Wario voice in Mario Party Jamboree reminds me subtly of MKWii Wario's voice, especially the "Yeah, baby" voiceline. And this is despite TGD saying that the voice is distinctly different.

...The only other characters to get their voice changed outside the ones Charles voiced were Daisy and Nabbit. I don't think it's that deep. The original VAs probably gave up the roles, and they brought in Giselle Fernandez and Dawn M. Bennett (I read somewhere that Deanna Mustard gave up the role of Daisy to focus on her theater projects, but I can't find any sources to back that claim up, so take it with a grain of salt)

It’s also worth noting that there’s a Mario 64 minigame in Warioware Move It which also features Kevin voicing Mario there too, Kevin also expressed he loved voicing Waluigi in Jamboree. One thing I’m excited about for Smash 6 is getting completely new voicelines for Mario, Luigi, Wario and Waluigi, they’ve been reusing the same voiceclips since Brawl, with Mario’s being the worst since Brawl Mario sounds like he has a stuffy nose and if Waluigi is playable Kevin can really go nuts and cook up some more amazing Waluigi voiceclips!

It sounds a lot more fitting for Wario. As a German, I always understood "so ein Mist" (directly translated it means 'such a (pile of) shit'), but never thought that it was actually spoken that way - by a German. Until now, I always assumed that it was the English "oh, I missed". Knowing that a German basically 'sneaked' a German sentence in there makes me laugh quite a bit. But maybe this is just the speaker's revenge for the fact that Germans are always immediately associated with aggressive language and malice. I mean, the dark chapter of our history should finally be over, right? 🙂
Funny, isn't it? I'm German as well and my best buddy from my childhood and youth days always sweared that Wario was saying "So ein Mist!" in Mario Kart 64. I played the shit out of this game, often with said friend of mine. And I heard that voice line hundreds of times, crystal clear. Yet I always refused to believe that he was actually saying this, telling myself it was something in English that sounded similar somehow. I guess I own my friend an apology...
I think my favorite version of Wario's voice is Mario Party Superstars. Deep and gruff, with a cackle that would fit a 1980s cartoon villain with him twirling his mustache.

The thing is Charles’ personification of Wario itself is also very inconsistent, going from deep and gravely like in Wario Land Shake It, to the high pitched squeals and cackles of Wario Ware Gold.
I think Kevin will fine tune his voice for the characters and practice makes perfect. While his mario was a little rough at start i think hes gonna be better as the years go along

i see the ability for the new mario to improve. wonder was kinda bad, but his mario voice has been getting better and wario sounds pretty good. as a huge luigi fan, my only problem is just his extremely inaccurate luigi voice. i can tell he lacks an understanding of what makes luigi sound like luigi atm, but i'm hopeful that he'll notice soon enough.
Thomas Spindler did a great job as Wario. Giving him a German voice for Wario. Charles Martinet as Wario is very good. Kevin Zachary Afghani did a great job as Wario. His Wario fix like a mix of Wario's greedy and careless but care. The Japanese voice actor of Wario, Hironori Kondo, did a great job as Wario, so good. Yeah, the line Thomas line as Wario said. So, ein Mist, oh, another words translate to means oh crap but mistake Doh I missed. I like both Thomas, Charles and Kevin's voice as Wario, they did a amazing job.
Idea: You could talk about Pikuniku and their main theme being in almost every song in their soundtrack (I know it's not a Nintendo game but it did come out on the Switch so I guess it counts)
Martinet has repeatedly said in the best that he'd keep doing the voices until he felt he couldn't give the best performances anymore. I don't believe Nintendo forced him to give up his characters. If anything, they probably sat down and had a discussion going forward as to what the plan is when Martinet couldn't do them anymore... and as much as I love Martinet, you could really hear "old-man voice" in Mario. If there was any bad blood, I don't think they'd name him as Mario Ambassador.
I think maybe Nintendo had felt Charles was a bit too old, so maybe they told him he was retiring from voice acting, and I say this because when Charles talked about it, he sounded kind of shocked
This is my favorite series of yours, I think a Nintendo series that would be great for this would be Xenoblade. It’s iconic for its British voice acting and the story behind why it’s that way is very interesting and would make for a great story.

The thing is Charles’ personification of Wario itself is also very inconsistent, going from deep and gravely like in Wario Land Shake It, to the high pitched squeals and cackles of Wario Ware Gold.

I think Kevin will fine tune his voice for the characters and practice makes perfect. While his mario was a little rough at start i think hes gonna be better as the years go along

I feel like the first time I heard Wario’s voice was in a commercial for his gameboy game… Wario and the 7 coins or something like that? That was a good one, really sounded like a sinister Mario. Couldn’t tell if it was a new character or if something horrible happened to Mario, and the goal of the game was to cure him.

8:08 I (kinda) knew it! As a german I was curious as a child about if this was an english or a german sentence recorded. Nearly everybody said that this was english and just accidently sounds like german but it sounded too clear. Feels good to have that answer after all these years.

Yea but how much time of his was even being used? They mostly reused his voice samples for many games.
@@gmcubed Yes but he was also doing other stuff as well. Also we dont know why exactly he wants to spend more time with his grandkids. Could be a family emergency situation (one parent's sick so Grandpa needs to come look after the kids etc)
i see the ability for the new mario to improve. wonder was kinda bad, but his mario voice has been getting better and wario sounds pretty good. as a huge luigi fan, my only problem is just his extremely inaccurate luigi voice. i can tell he lacks an understanding of what makes luigi sound like luigi atm, but i'm hopeful that he'll notice soon enough.
Same, not a big fan of his voice acting for the most part, but his Waluigi is pretty damn good

My headcanon is that he is from South Tyrol (close to being German, but still Italian). Will never happen but he will always be German in many hearts.
Thomas Spindler did a great job as Wario. Giving him a German voice for Wario. Charles Martinet as Wario is very good. Kevin Zachary Afghani did a great job as Wario. His Wario fix like a mix of Wario's greedy and careless but care. The Japanese voice actor of Wario, Hironori Kondo, did a great job as Wario, so good. Yeah, the line Thomas line as Wario said. So, ein Mist, oh, another words translate to means oh crap but mistake Doh I missed. I like both Thomas, Charles and Kevin's voice as Wario, they did a amazing job.
I think Kevin's Wario is better than his Mario lol.

Martinet has repeatedly said in the best that he'd keep doing the voices until he felt he couldn't give the best performances anymore. I don't believe Nintendo forced him to give up his characters. If anything, they probably sat down and had a discussion going forward as to what the plan is when Martinet couldn't do them anymore... and as much as I love Martinet, you could really hear "old-man voice" in Mario. If there was any bad blood, I don't think they'd name him as Mario Ambassador.
I think maybe Nintendo had felt Charles was a bit too old, so maybe they told him he was retiring from voice acting, and I say this because when Charles talked about it, he sounded kind of shocked

This is my favorite series of yours, I think a Nintendo series that would be great for this would be Xenoblade. It’s iconic for its British voice acting and the story behind why it’s that way is very interesting and would make for a great story.
