I absolutely love Charles' acting, he will forever be Mario.
@@ThomasGameDocs I'd like to add some rebuttals on things. 8:39: While it is likely that Mario being from Brooklyn that somehow was transported to the Mushroom Kingdom by Warp Zone would be an agreed upon concept with Nintendo (and that this concept has been a major idea in official non-canon material, to the point of being used for the Mario Movie from Illumination), the narrative in-game never explicitly state this. In fact, the first two games to change the narrative would be 1994's Donkey Kong for the Game Boy, and Yoshi's Island on the SNES. In the former, it says Mario was chasing Donkey Kong by foot on a wild goose chase that led him to the Mushroom Kingdom, which also means the Sewers that Mario and Luigi were in are actually in the basement of Castle Toadstool (which not only would explain how Mario heard Peach's cries for help, but also because Bowser's proposed name was gonna be Boss Creeper, a reference to the Koopa Troopas being originally called Shellcreepers); In the latter, Mario and Luigi were delivered by Stork before Kamek interfered, and it led to Yoshi helping Mario save his brother so they can get back home. In fact, it's likely that this *new* narrative was made to cut ties with the outdated narrative, after the Live-Action film bombed at the box office for disregarding the Fantasy Script. 10:40: Charles Martinet was actually not the first to give Mario some Italian dialect; if you remember what you said earlier about Lou Albano, you stated that he was an Italian American. Albano took advantage of this and was the first to give Mario his iconic dialect; in fact, you can look up "TUMF Pasta Proclamations", and see a compilation of various clips where Mario (and Luigi) speaking of Italian Food and saying "Mama Mia" (TUMF also made one for the multiple Uh-Ohs, which Mario also said in the games). It could also be the reason why Mario's SMB3 and SMW cartoons were short lived; not only did it not go for a Syndication Package, but Mario (as well as Luigi) was made less Italian and more American. Same applies to the Live-Action film, as Mario was portrayed by Bob Hoskins, a British Man. While he does great as Eddie Valiant, he didn't think highly of playing as Mario. Although the Illumination film was great, it felt weird that Chris Pratt would play the character; but it is interesting they made Mario being Italian again, by having a big Italian Family. 12:20: Not just any Shakespearean play, but "Taming of the Shrew", in which during his time performing, he was casted as Gremio, the elderly suitor of Bianca. Also, sidenote, even though it's just speculation, Charles Martinet's voice for Mario reminds me of when Mel Blanc does a voice for Christopher Columbus in Bugs Bunny's "Hare We Go" (great, now even the title of that short makes me think of Mario).

We need more Charles Martinet voicing Mario games…! 😭 He isn’t retired, according to him, and is still doing other acting roles. It’s just a common company practice in Japan to silently move a key figure of power to a limited position instead of firing them, to avoid controversy. That’s what this whole "Mario Ambassador" thing actually means. While such a move might work well in the Japanese cultural context, such practices can be considered against the worker’s rights in other countries and even illegal in some, making it controversial at least. One that doesn’t increase the trust towards Nintendo necessarily.
9:24 I find it interesting that despite this, Mario is depicted as Mexican instead of Italian on the "Mission to Rescue Princess Peach" movie. Maybe the people who made that movie just mistook Mexican charro suits and ponchos with Italian stuff.
Fun fact mario is so popular that as an Italian other people trying to do an Italian accent will always subconsciously make their voice high pitched to sound like mario even though italian is a pretty low pitched language
_What I would really like to know is:_ Are the *Italian* flag's colors a coincidence, or did they made *Luigi* and *Mario, green* and *red* on purpose ?
Reading these comments, its kinda wild to me that so many people don't know that Mario and Luigi are New Yorkers lol, did they only ever run with that bit of trivia here in the states?
It's not 100% confirmed that Martinet did the pinball voice, as the voice actor hasn't officially been credited and the performance is quite different from other early Martinet performances. The claim that Martinet was the actor comes from a Reddit post that claimed he said he was when asked about it, but a known issue is Martinet's memory of some of his early work has been mistaken in some other disputes about credit, notably over Thomas Spindler's portrayal of Wario in certain N64 games.
@@novauviolon I just check and in the Mario Wiki shows that Craig Brolley voiced it, sourcing an email from Dave Zabriskie, the composer for that machine in particular
this is a strange year. 1985 was the year it was released in the US and on the Famicom in Japan, we in Europe got it in 1987, while in 1986 came a Famicom DIsk System port of the game. why he said 86 instead of 85 or 87 is a mystery for me.
In 1986 there was a Japanese only Mario OVA, Super Mario Bros: The Great Mission to Rescue Peach! where the lines of the "real world" the mushroom kingdom, and the video game itself were kind of blurred. In it Mario & Luigi were shown to run a store in a western town. So at least with that OVA, it seemed to imply they could be from Texas or possibly even Mexico. But that of course was in those early formative years and never caught on.
Apparently the story about Mario Segale bursting in and demanding payment is a myth. Mario was someone the Nintendo staff had never actually met. He was an enigma. And it seems to have struck their fancy that the protagonist of the game could be Mario.
Wario was concepted as German in Mario Party 1 and 2, when he appeared for first time as a 3d character, as his voicer was a German. But on other games, seems that Charles Martinet took Wario to voice him later, beginning in Mario Party 3 and voicing him on platfirm games, that came later.
Hmm, now that you mention it is interesting to think of games that don’t have voice acting and thinking about how the characters would sound. Like, in any Pokémon game where there are unique characters do the developers or designers think of what they would sound like since they’re basing a region on England or Spain? Or the characters that have accepted voices in two different languages, would the creators consider the voices they would actually have or just write a character based off their own experience.
So basically he's italian because his name is Mario. No but all jokes aside this was a really interesting video, I know so much about Mario and yet I still learned new things here, so thank you for that!
Fun fact: The first time we heard Charles’ voice was in a Gottlieb pinball machine, 3 years before Mario Teaches Typing, they stole the voice clips from the tradeshows!

Well, proud to be Italian like Mario!! ;D
I was literally talking about mario being italian with some earlier today. I just assumed it had something to do with the Super Mario Super Show.
Thomas! Keep up the 10/10 content!❤
Gonna be honest this whole past week I’ve been waiting for Thomas to upload a new video I’m so happy Thomas you’re the best ❤️
*Thomasina
I absolutely love the loony toons style effect in the end
Loving the Emio soundtrack in the background TGD!!
Fun fact mario is so popular that as an Italian other people trying to do an Italian accent will always subconsciously make their voice high pitched to sound like mario even though italian is a pretty low pitched language
Thank you Mario Mario for being inclusive before it was a thing
I am Italian and Super Mario is my childhood hero. I have always been proud of this since I was very little.
As an italian, seeing this notification was something
Why are you Italian?

Mario is just THE face of video games
Yes, he is!
Amazing video as always
Good video!
Love that you put in some FDC music in this 🖤
It would be so cool if there was a mario game setting in Italy
_What I would really like to know is:_
Are the *Italian* flag's colors a coincidence, or did they made *Luigi* and *Mario, green* and *red* on purpose ?

Reading these comments, its kinda wild to me that so many people don't know that Mario and Luigi are New Yorkers lol, did they only ever run with that bit of trivia here in the states?
Certainly not the upload I was expecting but one I will except with open arms 😂
Mario is not Italian enough, he needs a golden cross necklace!!! 😂

Wasn't the Super Mario World Pinball game the first time that Charles Martinet voiced Mario?
I have no idea what that is.
@@koolaid33 the Super Mario World Gottlieb pinball machine, search it up
It is, but I guess that wouldn't be considered a mainline Mario game.
9:05 wasn’t the game released in 1985?
this is a strange year. 1985 was the year it was released in the US and on the Famicom in Japan, we in Europe got it in 1987, while in 1986 came a Famicom DIsk System port of the game. why he said 86 instead of 85 or 87 is a mystery for me.
@@starleaf-luna same
In 1986 there was a Japanese only Mario OVA, Super Mario Bros: The Great Mission to Rescue Peach! where the lines of the "real world" the mushroom kingdom, and the video game itself were kind of blurred. In it Mario & Luigi were shown to run a store in a western town. So at least with that OVA, it seemed to imply they could be from Texas or possibly even Mexico. But that of course was in those early formative years and never caught on.
Yoooooooo it's a new Thomas Game Docs! ✨️
Let’s be honest, it’s all coincidence Mario ended up being as he is.
Apparently the story about Mario Segale bursting in and demanding payment is a myth. Mario was someone the Nintendo staff had never actually met. He was an enigma. And it seems to have struck their fancy that the protagonist of the game could be Mario.
0:17 Isn't Wario German?
He was until charles martinet started to voice him and give him an Italian accent
SO EIN MIST
Wario was concepted as German in Mario Party 1 and 2, when he appeared for first time as a 3d character, as his voicer was a German. But on other games, seems that Charles Martinet took Wario to voice him later, beginning in Mario Party 3 and voicing him on platfirm games, that came later.
Mario as Jumpman those times looked like an American circus owner or old store owner.

Those who guessed Itsumi Mario:
because he was born there?? um
No? He’s from Brooklyn New york and have probably lived there
omg now that I think about it... Mario in the mushrooms kingdom could be the first isekai!
Hmm, now that you mention it is interesting to think of games that don’t have voice acting and thinking about how the characters would sound.
Like, in any Pokémon game where there are unique characters do the developers or designers think of what they would sound like since they’re basing a region on England or Spain?
Or the characters that have accepted voices in two different languages, would the creators consider the voices they would actually have or just write a character based off their own experience.
breaking: Nintendo has just sued Italy for copyright infringement on Mario's origin country.
i feel like im livin in a situation cuz i just thought of this question and this vid was here only 2 days before
To be fair, "Mr. Video" doesn't have the same ring as "Mario". Imagine if Mario is still called "Mr. Video".
In Italy every time there is a famous person called mario (for example Mario Balotelli, Mario Draghi, etc...) the media always call him "SuperMario"
Loving all the uses of the music from Emio: Famicom Detective Club in this video!
Happy 39th anniversary to Super Mario Bros!!!
