Mario's early design in the _Donkey Kong_ arcade cabinet looks like the type of guy who would rather kidnapped someone and tied them on the train tracks. He's more of Waluigi before he even existed.
Man, is Popeye the Sailorman really that unknown these days? I'm a 90s kid and I still knew him growing up thanks to Cartoon Network's re-runs of his classic shorts. He did for spinach what Bugs Bunny did for carrots, and even what Mario did for mushrooms. And he's got one of the most iconic theme songs. You didn't mention Mario in the Saturday Supercade Donkey Kong cartoon segment that aired in 1983/84 which I believe was the first time we saw Mario in animation format and was voiced by the Legendary Peter Cullen! Mario in that cartoon looked young like he was in his 20s or early 30s!
And DK the big ape also had a legendary voice in it, Soupy Sales. A name that may be unknown on us younger generations, but apparently he was very popular in children's TV for decades in the old days. Another fun tidbit was there was an episode that tied into the DK3 arcade game, and is the only time we ever see Mario and Stanley (the obscure protagonist of DK3, and the G&W game "Greenhouse") at the same time.
It took me forever to realize that Mario's overalls used to be red, and his long sleeve shirt was blue in his older games, because I'm so used to the long sleeved red shirt with the blue overalls from the current Mario games.

I know that Mario is the same person since Donkey Kong... But deep down i believe in the headcanon that Jumpman the Carpenter, it's Mario and Luigi's father. Then in Mario Bros both sons are plumbers that end up in the mushroom Kingdom
Then who was in Wrecking Crew, the Punch-out referee, and such? I dunno it seems confusing to me, and the NES manual (which you can legally download now off the NES Classic Edition website) for DK calls the main character "Mario" so it's always going to be Mario for me. Plus making Mario and "Jumpman" different characters kinda makes Mario and DK lose their connection together.
I'll tell you one thing about the '80s. Nobody ever referred to them as "Super Mario BROS" because everyone knew "Bros." (with the period) is the abbreviated form of "Brothers."
I didn't realize the previous iterations of Mario were designed by different artists! I like your interpretation of the different styles. Of course everyone knows the most iconic design, but something about Cabarga's version... I know it will stay in my heart.
My head-cannon is the Mario from DK Arcade is the current Mario's Father. He's Mario Mario Sr., and the current Mario is Mario Mario Jr. "who's brother is Luigi Mario".
I actually really like the old design with older mario, the one we have today is too cutesy... Why can't we play as an old, grumpy, italian imigrant. Like the one in the old movie (which is great btw), he is ugly, drinks and smokes and is generally unappealing, but he's more real and grounded, more imaginative.
Super Mario brings me a lot of joy and comfort. I have a nephew close to my age and when we were kids, we'd play Mario together on Gameboy, then on DS. It was a lot of fun!
14:20 there’s actually a lot of difference’s proportion wise as well as clothing wise so I’d say the Mario movie design is a different design for mario
Something very important that you missed. The 1983/1984 Saturday morning cartoon called Supercade. Mario was on that cartoon. He looks different from the other old ones.
Jumpman's design always came across as a mascot for a pizza chain or frozen pizza brand imo. His limited color palette actually reminds me of Little Caesar's own mascot!
Great video! How do you feel about the upcoming movie though?! I've been excited by the trailers so far, i think the little things i could nitpick wouldn't really ruin the experience of the Mario movie for me! Though i'm still kinda hoping we get some of Mario's classic jump sounds or screams as some kind of easter egg! xD
@ThomasGameDocs - How come they reversed his original color design?? In the beginning he had Red Overalls & Blue Shirt..... Then for some reason they swapped it to Blue Overalls & Red Shirt. I haven't been able to find any specific reason why they swapped the colors.
Would you be interested in make one of these videos on Wario? He’s had a lot of interesting tweaks to his design over the years (plus the major change for his WarioWare appearances) and I think it could make for a fun video.
I like to headcanon that Jump-Man is Mario's father, because it better lines up with the Donkey Kong timeline. Mario and Luigi became plumbers in New Donk City, before moving to the Mushroom Kingdom looking for work (they heard it was full of pipes).
I really like this video it's really interesting how certain things about a characters design can make or break a character and become instantly iconic and recognizable take mickey mouse for instance also another most recognizable character on the planet his head and ears and pants and shoes being instantly recognizable to everyone. Stuff like this I find really fascinating so thanks for the video👍I would love to see more like this like one for sonic even I already know the history for most of these characters bit I think it would be cool for other people to know too

Now, please let's all just ignore what Pac-Man looks like in the artwork on the original arcade game.
DOES NOBODY NOTICE THE OVERALLS AND SHIRT SWAP COLORS ALL THE TIME IN THE OLDER DAYS? WHAT THE HECK
I say even that very first ‘pixelated’-Mario still looks much more like the current one then those first two ‘drawings’ that came right after it 😄
Fun fact:when the old Mario design was created for donkey Kong they used the same color design for the super Mario bros super show
I didn't even know he was that old (1981).
Everybody gangsta till Mario turns into an oversimplified logo
I actually really like the old design with older mario, the one we have today is too cutesy...
Why can't we play as an old, grumpy, italian imigrant. Like the one in the old movie (which is great btw), he is ugly, drinks and smokes and is generally unappealing, but he's more real and grounded, more imaginative.
14 year old designing a character be like:
I like the new one, we don't want another shadow the hedgehog
Cute-looking characters are more appeling
Super Mario brings me a lot of joy and comfort. I have a nephew close to my age and when we were kids, we'd play Mario together on Gameboy, then on DS. It was a lot of fun!
Mario is such a great icon. He's as iconic as Mickey Mouse and yet his creation origins are connected to Popeye the sailor man.
Original mario looks like he’s going to steal Christmas from whovile
Nintendo: this is still mario because we redesign him
SEGA: this isn't a sonic redesign this is a diffrent sonic form a diffrent Universe we swear
4:41 I've been looking for video game characters with black curly hair
14:20 there’s actually a lot of difference’s proportion wise as well as clothing wise so I’d say the Mario movie design is a different design for mario
They just made cuter for the 2023 movie
Nice video. Grew up with Mario, and am graphic artist myself, so very cool to see the development of the characters
4:39 glad there was a professional artist to polish up the sketch
Mario becomed a rubber hose character when going to America, thats pretty cool to see mario if he was a cartoon from the 30s
The one with the long hair looks a lot the one that Captain Lou Albano played in the 90s.
I have always wondered why they swapped the overalls
The fact that two ppl have Mario names is crazy like a person named yoshi working at Nintendo like what’s next? Doshi?
Something very important that you missed. The 1983/1984 Saturday morning cartoon called Supercade. Mario was on that cartoon. He looks different from the other old ones.
Jumpman's design always came across as a mascot for a pizza chain or frozen pizza brand imo. His limited color palette actually reminds me of Little Caesar's own mascot!
I found your Channel last Week and can't Stop watching your Videos ^^ Keep up the good Work 👍🏻
Great video!
4:50 there’s actually a theory that jumpman (the carpenter) is Mario’s (the plumber) father
Mario and Luigi became plumbers in New Donk City, before moving to the Mushroom Kingdom looking for work (they heard it was full of pipes).
mario's 40 years old of course he's gonna look different than he used to, that's how aging works
37
He looks younger the older he gets.
He's so old that he went from 40 to 25
I really like this video it's really interesting how certain things about a characters design can make or break a character and become instantly iconic and recognizable take mickey mouse for instance also another most recognizable character on the planet his head and ears and pants and shoes being instantly recognizable to everyone. Stuff like this I find really fascinating so thanks for the video👍I would love to see more like this like one for sonic even I already know the history for most of these characters bit I think it would be cool for other people to know too
You forgot the quintessential Mario.......BoB Hoskins!
if mario is canonically getting younger that means yoshis island is in the future
I think the reason why mario doesn’t look like he used to is because he got a design change
Whoa, really?
@@supermarionoobs2639 yeah it’s really hard to comprehend
I COULD HAVE NEVER GUESSED
thx :)
@@thealmightycrisprat no problem
IT HAS BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE I WAS WAITING FOR ANOTHER VIDEO ABOUT CHARACTERS THAT DO NOT LOOK LIKE THEY USED TO.
Yesssssssss, i've waited so long for this!!!!!!
I love that in Super Mario Odyssey’s New Donk City pays homage to the original design.
Hey Thomas. Thanks for continuing to make excellent content.
