@@IBJ57 Nested tuplet nonsense isn't the only form of musicality; so if for once Steven isn't up with Zappa in that kind of musical display, Zappa is also miles below in terms of, say, memorable melody writing, for example.

Because it falls short on what Guthrie did in the studio version. The original solo can be a piece exhibited at the MOMA. Alex’s effort is great, but they’re just on different universes.
I know people always talk about Gavin and Marco, and I love their drumming with all my heart and soul, but man did the drummer absolutely bring it with this song.
It's sad that many cling to Gavin and Porcupine Tree, when Craig (who is a phenomenal drummer) is playing as well as he does during each of Steven's shows. Each of them brings their own flavour to each track.
Marco and Gavin are different, and whilst Craig is a fantastic drummer, to me he sounds less organic. It's just my taste. Same for Guthrie. I was there live with them and loved it.
Blundell is by all accounts an excellent drummer, comparing him to Gavin and/or Marco is like comparing different blends of coffee and being upset that none of them is tea.

@Nathan Pickering: I agree. Works for me in the same way. I am not very fond of SW solo work, untill i have heard it live. I do not own any SW solo album, (i do own a lot PT albums though!) but i listen to his live concerts while i am working and watch live concerts when i am home alone.
It was an amazing concert and me and my friend wept when they played the song of unborn as my friend had his first baby as a premature birth (10 weeks) and the baby was in the emergency care at hospital at the time of concert.
I love how Wilson always performs soo well on stage. His voice gets an edge and an underlying power that gives so much more to his songs. Truly amazing performer.
One of the very few artists who I like even BETTER live. In a live setting, a lot of vocalists either improv their vocal melodies too much, lack power, run out of breath, or get way too pitchy. SW suffers from none of these issues and he stays very close to the original, while adding that bit of edge you mention

Twilight brings them from the gloom into our homes
And hiding there among the wreckage left behind
They see things that haunt them when they close their eyes

Come back if you want to
And remember who you are
'Cause there's nothing here for you my dear
And everything must pass
When the world doesn't want you
It will never tell you why
You can shut the door, but you can't ignore
The crawl of your decline
