+K6III450MHZ well said - she is incredibly good, and sadly would be unknown to so many, except for One of Us - which itself is brilliant, as is Relish the album
She is the greatest soul /blues/ rock/ folk /motown / I could go on totally unique. Her show in London was wonderful and the after show meet memorable.
Somehow I had never really known anything about her other than her name until about two months ago when by chance (or algorithm) I came across a video of her singing Dave Mason’s “Only You Know And I Know” and was so ultra-impressed that I Googled her next performance and as luck would have it she was performing in one month right here in NYC a few blocks from where I work. Immediately took a cab while on break at work and got two tickets right up close. Saw her perform a week ago and she was phenomenal and my friend and I were fortunate enough to meet her briefly after the show and have her sign a copy of her new CD, “Nobody Owns You”. She was very nice and engaging in person. I’m just all-around impressed. And there isn’t a better voice out there. She’s got soul. She’s got rhythm. She’s got the music in her.
was at this concert it was awesome. parked the truck🚛 at a truck stop in New Jersey. Got on New Jersey Transit🚉 out of Newark New Jersey into New York City. one bus🚌 one taxi🚕 right up to The Beacon Theatre. funny part at least it made it up there cuz when I had shut down at the truck stop it was snowing like crazy🌨️🌨️🌨️
This is one of my all-time favorite songs. I used to have 3 versions of it. The Stones, of course, Merry Clayton (Yes, it's spelled that way because she was born on Christmas), who sang back-up on the Stones version, and Ruth Copeland, who opened for the Stones, on one of their tours. I used to play all 3, back-to-back, frequently. RAPE! MURDER!
she has the best voice on the planet. Does anyone want to hear Beyonce tackle this....she couldn't hold a candle. Listen to Relish, the album that had What if God was one of us? That was the only song on a great album that got any play. She is one of the best kept secrets. Maybe she didn't kiss the right.....? Anyway, she is great and her music makes me feel good!
I think we should stop comparing Joan Osborne to other musicians, though they be sacred. That's essentially the point, she sings out the Dead, Dylan, Martha and the Vandelles. She can pull the most gorgeous music right into your kitchen, teach the lyrics, get people singing along, and then act all humble like nothing happened. God bless you, Joan among Joans (Armatrading, Baez, Mitchell, all the best). Shine on you crazy amazing woman.
@phaknA - Yeah, i agree about Joan, and Fergie did pretty well as well. I've uploaded the Watchtower, also Morning Dew, Lovelight, Sugaree, High Times, China Doll and other Dead songs that Joan sang.
Think her voice was used in 70s commercial. Is it live or Memorex? Jet engine power with the warble to make your knees weak. Much love. Peace. Let her tackle Ride of the Valkeries.
Very likely the best cover I've heard of this, including most of the RS covers of the past couple decades. But... the vocals are not quite reaching the fear inducing urgency of Mick and Claytons original chopped treatment.
Joan refused to sell her soul, is why she will never do a Superbowl half time ect... Morgan James is another. Walked away from the devil at the cross roads & so sings in relative obscurity.
I'm ok with it until it gets to the chorus. Just doesn't sound right without the Mary Clayton -high notes added in. Not bad though. The muscians could be a little tighter, too. In my opinion anyway...
Joan is an awesome singer, but this wasn't the song for her. I think y'all are mesmerized by the musicians behind Joan.. Phil, Trey and Larry (saw him several times with Dylan) are fantastic. Search youtube for Gimme Shelter, Rolling Stones, Twickenham, London, 2003, and fast forward to 4 minutes when Lisa Fisher takes over. Just incredible. For that matter, Lisa does a great job throughout. Do yourselves a favor and watch the whole song.
This is my favorite song EVER, but to say Joan tops Lisa Fischer, no, sorry can't. It's like listening on a 5 star rating, she'd rank a 3 to Lisa's 5. Just like the guitar work here, another 4 with Mick Taylor (the greatest technical lead guitarist the Stones ever could have) setting the bar at 5 on guitar. Please don't freak out, it's only my opinion, and I would look up Joan for good performances, but she can't quite reach the bar Lisa set,
Wow, gotta hear Lisa Fischer, because I really love Joan Osbourne. Thanks for the tip! Looking forward to it. Check out Joan on "Pensacola," but the studio version. Live usually lacking in the bass.
Excellent, will do, thanks. Also a friend told me on FB about "20 Feet From Stardom," which features her as well as other backup singers. Downloading it now. He said it's amazing. And shared a pic he took of her a couple of years ago, hey-ya! ( - ; Anyway, "Relish" is still a great kick-ass blues-rock album ...
Mmm, there's an audio clip but no video. And the audio won't play. There it goes. 26 seconds. Grr. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lisa_Fischer Maybe you meant a different page??
Merry Clayton is a major reason this song had such an impact when it was released, and why it's a classic now. Her incredible vocal is the first that I'm aware of by a gospel singer in a R@R song. It's groundbreaking.,and a great Stones song. The original will always top any cover,if it's this good.
Ohhh .... I love a Merry vs Miss Lisa debate and you 2 know your shit and I agree with both of you. Altamont created the subject matter and Merry created the soul and feel this song has still today even covers like this. But a highlight of every Stones show (I have seen each NA Tour since 1972) is when Miss Lisa Fisher starts her ewwwwing those eerily high notes (that Merry created) when she starts twirling and her cape starts flowing and Mick starts gawking in amazement ~ there ain't nothing like it. For years we all said she is so damn good Lisa should be fronting her own band and then .... oh shit, now she is ....uggg, but what about "Gimme Shelter"? Now every Stones show leaves a hole in my heart when I realize Keef doesn't see Bobby Keys when he looks to his left anymore and live it is hard to sing this song better than Lisa and I have seen Merry sing it live with the Stones also and with her then hubby Leon.
You're an idiot. Can't hear any bass cuz recording is not even close to perfect, and you're gonna bitch about incompetent musicians? Fuck you, you ignorant useless piece of trash. Try not tearing down for a change you little shit.
I swear to GOD this woman is the best kept secret on the planet. It's like she is part of some secret weapons program which no one can discuss.
+K6III450MHZ This is the truest statement I think I have ever read! Joan is a phenomenal talent!

well said - she is incredibly good, and sadly would be unknown to so many, except for One of Us - which itself is brilliant, as is Relish the album
Yeah, the rest of the album is tons better than the hit. Especially "Pensacola."
she is simply the best to me. A fan since I was young. A young singer.
For Real!! "WHO KNEW"?

The brilliant Joan Osborne
Joan is at the epicenter of that great rock n roll heartland effortlessly oozing the entire musical spectrum with her songs
St. Teresa is one of the very best songs I've ever heard....Crazy baby and Let's get naked are not far behind.
My favorite female singer. Without a doubt!!!
She is the greatest soul /blues/ rock/ folk /motown / I could go on totally unique. Her show in London was wonderful and the after show meet memorable.

Wow! The band is incredible!!! Even the guitar tone sounds like the Stones. Very tight. And yes, Joan is incredible!!
Experiencing this gig for the first but not final time! Far Out!
This gives me chills! Wow can she sing 💜
So much second rate garbage, so much success. And this incredibly talented, gorgeous woman languishes in relative obscurity. It just isn't fair.
She is even better live.
I agree the BEST VOICE since JOPLIN That my friend is a STONE Fact!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
She's been around singing for a long time. 🎉
I was there the shows with Phil & Trey were amazing!!!!
Best voice since Joplin...
Nobody does it better than Joanie!
Gimme shelter Stones classic.Good job Joan
Listen to "Right Hand Man" of "The Man in The Long Black Coat"
This riff gives me chills
was at this concert it was awesome. parked the truck🚛 at a truck stop in New Jersey. Got on New Jersey Transit🚉 out of Newark New Jersey into New York City. one bus🚌 one taxi🚕 right up to The Beacon Theatre.

There's nothing Joan can't do.
She rocks on!
Joan is the real thing.
the most awesome female vocalist of all time.
Holy crap this is good.
Oh yeah she's just airing it out!
Maybe the best version ever,...........
if I can't have Jerry.....Joan will certainly do!! Shake it, girl!!
Without question!!!

@phaknA - Yeah, i agree about Joan, and Fergie did pretty well as well. I've uploaded the Watchtower, also Morning Dew, Lovelight, Sugaree, High Times, China Doll and other Dead songs that Joan sang.
It would be greater if there was a video.
omg can she sing!!!! and shes hot!
Get set get ready let it bleed Album.
Check out lady Joanna Dean's version. One of my favorite cover tunes.
Think her voice was used in 70s commercial. Is it live or Memorex? Jet engine power with the warble to make your knees weak.
Much love. Peace. Let her tackle Ride of the Valkeries.
dang
Saw her many yrs ago as front for melissa etheridge in Portland. Guess what was best...
Itse just a shot away, it's just a shot away.....
She is like Warren Haynes (Gov't. Mule/ Allman Bros) cuz there aint nothing she can't cover and kick it's ass when she does.
she is...the band sure isn't
Very likely the best cover I've heard of this, including most of the RS covers of the past couple decades. But... the vocals are not quite reaching the fear inducing urgency of Mick and Claytons original chopped treatment.
No video here? Come on.
Joan refused to sell her soul, is why she will never do a Superbowl half time ect... Morgan James is another. Walked away from the devil at the cross roads & so sings in relative obscurity.
i dont get it explain
I was there but the Stair Attendant blocked my view the ENTIRE time.
I'm ok with it until it gets to the chorus. Just doesn't sound right without the Mary Clayton -high notes added in. Not bad though. The muscians could be a little tighter, too. In my opinion anyway...

NEVER FORGET EMMARETTA MARKS SANG THE ORIGINAL GIMME SHELTER AND NEVER GOT CREDIT OR PAYMENT FROM KIETH RICHARDS
@vibroluxor That's Phil.
Gee... no video and crappy audio. To like or not to like.
Desturded
Says Mr. Charlie Fucking Nobody.
The tune sounds thin, meandering and disjointed. Phil needs to drop an octave when he's playing bass on this tune and give it a groove.
this version is even better than the original from the stones....progress :)
My thoughts exactly!
WHO'S PLAYING GUITAR? ANYONE REMEMBER WHAT IF GOD WAS ONE OF US?
This is my favorite song EVER, but to say Joan tops Lisa Fischer, no, sorry can't. It's like listening on a 5 star rating, she'd rank a 3 to Lisa's 5. Yeah wowza. You are so right on both counts! Thanks for the comment, that was lovely.
The Stones record label pulled Lisa Fischer's best video with them on copyright but just check the clip on her Wikipedia page and you can see!
Excellent, will do, thanks. Also a friend told me on FB about "20 Feet From Stardom," which features her as well as other backup singers. Downloading it now. He said it's amazing. And shared a pic he took of her a couple of years ago, hey-ya!

Joan can Sing! but no one touches Lisa Fisher and The Stones
+Susan Stewart Except for Merry Clayton who shows Fisher what she missed on.
+paynomind. Have to disagree with you. Still standing with Lisa on this. She blows it out of the park

Bass player is lame :/
the entire band should go to work at the post office...Joan is amazing...her band in this video is beyond horrible

I don't think a career in comedy is going to work out for you either.
