  • Here I compare the Rivian Adventure Network Vs GM Energy Charging Stations. I review the pros and cons of both charging networks so you can decide which one is the best for the future of EV charging. I have made my choice, but let me know in the comments which on you prefer.

    I look forward to the RAN sites opening to non-Rivian EVs, especially because of where they are located. But Rivian copied the Supercharger site model a little too much for my liking, where they used an outdated site design and favored stall count over charging throughput. The standard GM Energy - PFJ site size can also be a bit deceptive because even though it only has four stalls, it should be able to max out four Rivians at the same time. My understanding is, the typical RAN site can only max out three Rivians at a time before everyone starts to get throttled.

      I hope RAN opens up to non-Rivians soon as well. I have an Ioniq 6.

      I agree. The RAN is too much like Tesla Superchargers which both create limitation due to your cars charge port location. GM Energy PFJ can charge any EV regardless of the port location.

    I just used my credit card at the GM energy station on our trip back from TN 2 weeks ago. I didn’t want to install one more App for a service I likely will never use again because they are not that common and charge $0.20 more per kWh than Tesla. Only 3 of the six chargers were working. Had a nice convo with a Walmart electric delivery van driver who explained that it takes her an hour to add 100 miles of range. 😮

      That doesn't sound like a GM Energy station. You might be confusing these with Electrify America.

      I agree because I haven't seen more than 2 stalls at the GM Energy stations I have been to, and I have never seen a broken one. That does sound more like EA.

    I've never gotten autocharge to work at EVGo. I would try to mess with EVGo more to get autocharge to work but there are always Uber drivers at the only station (2 stall of course) near my house in Greensboro North Carolina and I don't want to block these hardworking Uber folks.

    4:00 Thanks for helping the Acura lady. Probably a ZDX. But some PHEV can fast charge, maybe? I'm not familiar with that whole situation with PHEVs fast charging.

    With a Tesla and Rivian, I see no reason to ever stop at a GM ECS. I value seamless plug & charge over canopies and window washer accessories. Plus, the GM ECS cost is outrageous. Hard pass here. Nice work to help an EV newbie get her sea legs.

      It's still unclear why his Autocharge+ doesn't work on EVgo. I know it works well with other EVs, including Teslas. These stations are being subsidized for GM EV owners, many of whom don't pay at all, and the newer PFJ locations are only costing $0.40 to $0.50 per kWh even for non-GM EV owners.

    That was an excellent comparison, and to me, anyway, the RAN would be the far preferable way to go, but it being early days yet in the transition to EVs, and with Rivian just trying to stay afloat until the R2 launch (the VW infusion of capital should go a long way to stabilizing Rivian until R2 production ramps up), I doubt we'll see an explosion of RAN chargers. Thank goodness the Tesla Supercharger Network is available (although I have no idea how much that will cost), as that will help for those road-tripping with their EVs. I would have to think that people road-trip occasionally, but if you own your home and can swing putting a Level 2 charger in your garage, you should be in great shape for 90% of your charging needs. Great video and really like your positivity and presentation style--keep 'em coming!

      Tesla typically costs $0.56 per kWh without a membership and $0.36 with a $13 per month Tesla subscription. I’ve done 10,000 miles of road-tripping this summer and mostly used Tesla charging for my Rivian so I know the costs are pretty consistent.

    • @thedukeofmanville
      @thedukeofmanville  8 днів тому

      Thanks! As far as charging a Rivian is concerned the RAN and Tesla Supercharges are the most seamless and connects the fastest. Also, for me I only use fast chargers on road trips since I charge at home.

    67 cents! I will stick to the Tesla superchargers, and they can keep the covered charging area, lol! I am used to .30-42. Maybe GM's electric was the high-octane grade:)!

    $0.67/kWH is very high for GM but I guess they have to recoup their investment. If we have at least reliable EV charging infrastructure on our highways, it’s a good start.

    The problem with gm energy is they are trying to recoup the cost that GM is offering free charges to their GM customers so you’re paying for your charge and the free charge that GM customers get Chevy and Cadillac owners

      I believe Pilot/Flying J's sets the pricing for the charging from what I understand. I also believe they are lowering prices at some locations.
