  • Gary Player completed a hat-trick of Champion Golfer titles at Royal Lytham & St Annes, having won his first Open at Muirfield in 1959 and his second at Carnoustie in 1968.
    With his triumph in 1974, he shared with Harry Vardon and J.H. Taylor the distinction of claiming the title in three separate decades.
    Fifteen years on from his first major win, he had added an eighth and was showing he still had an abundance of enthusiasm and dedication to produce his very best golf.
    He was the fourth player after Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus to win the Masters and The Open in the same year.

    Amazing how the putting stroke has changed so much over the years.

    Amazing how the ball on the 17th could move unilaterally in the rough to 20 yards nearer the green than where it landed.

    As Jack Nicklaus is reported to have said..."Gary always found a way to win." LOL, Jack is (and always will be) a class act.

    Its all about putting. The difference in putting between a low handicapper and these guys is why they are famous and we spend alot of time in our lives, trying to figure out!

    Brilliant and thank you. I would be thrilled if you could dig through the IMG replay footage of Peter Thomson from 1965 and illustrate how well he hit the ball in that final 18 holes, where he had 35 putts in his 71, playing with Tony Lema.

    First time Peter Thomson had missed the cut in The Open since his first championship in 1951. What is not as well known was that in 1973/74 Peter Thomson hurt his wrist in Asia and struggled for years after that injury.

    On the last hole, how much sand did he move behind the ball on his practice stroke??

    Yet another Open where the veteran professional just rises to the occasion, and any hiccups along the way don't lead to anything worse. The one thing this championship does better than any other is that it gives a tremendous advantage to the experienced ones. Randos may show up on Day 1 and 2 but their inexperience will be exposed soon enough.

    Took half the sand out with his practice swing on that left handed shot on the last - should have had a two shot penalty amd DQ for signing for the wrong score

      7100 yards par 70 that sit basically almost in the town as the town grew/growing around the course. Yes, it's not going to be in the rota for a while

    • @notdrivingaminimetro
      @notdrivingaminimetro Рік тому +2

      In all the previous Opens at all venues only Muirfield has played tougher, by three shots. Hoylake will get torn to pieces again this year as it's wide open. Lytham is shorter but people forget it's only a Par 70. Scores when Els won in 2012 were 17 shots better than Bobby Jones in 1926, that's 86 years apart. I can only think of Carnoustie that has a tougher finish. Six par 4s, four of them over 400 yards is brutal and all the run offs are towards sand. Surely it stays on the rota if the R&A look at the facts

      My dad was a steward that year and he swears blind that ball in 17 wasn't his at all....he and a good few others saw it land in the rough miles away from where they so called found that ball.

      Look closely at his practice swing with the putter beside the clubhouse at 18 took a lot of earth from behind the ball before putting, like Patrick Reed in the bunker clearing away the sand before his stroke,improving his lie......

    • @stuartbaker3897
      @stuartbaker3897 Рік тому +3

      Agree, there used to be a vid on UA-cam that showed the mound of sand behind his ball which he swept away with his backhand fake practice swing with his putter, all the available videos have now edited that part out. The members on the balcony were not being noisy rather they were outraged that he improved his lie. He improved his lie even though he was 4-5 strokes ahead and could have taken 7 strokes on the 72nd hole and still won easily! On the issue on the 17th hole, I’ve never agreed with pros having spectators and officials looking for their ball, weekend golfers don’t have that help - the rest of the field in a tournament should benefit from the wayward player who mishits his ball and then has to play ‘stroke and distance’ penalty but instead pros get their ball ‘found’ for them all of the time. Did Player ever say it’s a Dunlop red 2 with my initials on it (or similar) before the search? I doubt it.

      Even if he "had cheated" and I'm not sure whether he did or notwhatever would have been the point. From memory he was 5 shots clear. Could have dropped two shots and still have been 3 clear on the 18th tee..

      Weiskoff looks and sounds like a cross between James Caan and Bruce Dern. He spoke to me once when I was a teen and the only one following him--he was having a bad day. He hit a faded 4 wood off hard pan under a tree around some trees and landed it on the green (still the most astonishing shot I've ever watched), then he turned to me and said, "Don't ever play golf for a living." 😂
