- For one of the few times in his career, Nick Faldo arrived at a major not just hoping to win but expecting to.
He had already defended his Masters title and finished one stroke away from a play-off at the US Open. He knew his main rival would be Greg Norman, still officially the World No.1.
Norman opened with twin rounds of 66, while Faldo had a 67, thanks to holing a pitch-and-run through the Valley of Sin for an eagle two at the 18th, and then a 65.
The pair were tied on 12 under par, four strokes ahead of the field. The anticipation for their duel over the weekend was high but it never materialised.

I have this on VHS. I've nearly worn it out due to repeat watching it over a 20 year period. Best golf Faldo had ever played.
I was there that year specifically to meet Fred Couples, who was my hero. I was only 20 at the time. I waited for ages at the practice putting green and was just about to give up when he turned up in a Limousine. It was the practice day- the Wednesday,- so he was very relaxed. I chatted with him for about 30 minutes and told him I thought he had the most beautiful swing in golf and that I was certain that one day he would become world No1. "You have more faith in me than I do kid, but I promise will do my best", he said and gave me his autograph. At the time Fred was not so well known in the UK but it seems my prediction came true on both accounts. He did become World No1 and today he his said to have the "prettiest swing in Golf."
Love it
A great story and a brilliant swing. Never got the major results his fans would like to see, but who cares. We still get to see him and *that* swing to this day.
I agree with you. Back then & till today Faldo is my Hero and just like you I believed he had the most beautiful swing & would become World No. 1 one day when I first met him in Muirfield 1987. Indeed he did become World No. 1 and his swing, IMHO is among the few timeless near perfect golf swing along with Couples, Stewart, Els & Oosthuizen (I nicknamed them The Elegant Five 🤭) in no particular order. Current generation of the tour players while having much more powerful swing, don't quite swing elegantly as The Elegant Five with the exception of Oosthuizen 😉
Fred still has the best looking swing of all time
I once got to play 4 holes with Craig Parry when he was at the Heineken Classic. He hit a shot 4 ft from the cup on a par 3 and I said "Great shot" and his reply "nah, it didn't go in" That's how these pros play. They expect to hole out on par 3s
My brother and I went on Saturday. We watched Faldo and Norman warming up. They were joined by Wayne Grady, who had missed the cut. He was practicing. A couple of weeks later he went on to win the USPGA so all the practice must have paid off!
Faldo was intimidating even on the practice area - he was striking the ball so incredibly well.
There’s the story that you get a “good morning” from him at the start of the round and “good game” at the end. Not a word from him otherwise
Started playing golf after watching this, went from 24 to 6 hcap in first year. Faldo still one of my heroes.
1990 is still my favourite year ever. Hot, long summer, great sports, music etc. Brilliant!! I was pleased that we had the best player in the world at golf. I always wanted Faldo to win the US open and USPGA to complete the set but it wasn’t to be.
My grandad got me a job there for 2 weeks-I was a teenager, it literally was the best 2weeks of my life & to cap it all I was one of the ones that ran up the 18th & then stood at the presentation on the first line of spectators with a clear view (to the west side) of the presentation. So many memories of it all & then there was the red arrows, Lyle chipping in on Saturday at 18. Seeing all my golfing heroes. Qualifying & using Scoonie G.C as a practise area. Just all absolutely fantastic memories.
I still to this day walk up to the Martyrs Monument & expect to see my grandparents like they were there on 22/7/90 after it finished sitting on the benches ❤️ that I could see watching this but aren’t there anymore. Thanks for posting.
It doesn't matter how far you can hit the ball, if you can't putt you're nobody.
RIP Payne Stewart.
Payne was so often in the thick of the majors.
I watched this Open all weekend - my parents were complaining as I never left my bedroom!
Faldo simply got the job done. In any tournament he won, the golf was never overly flamboyant, he was just an engine grinding down opponents.
Sorry but that old tom Morris impersonation etc was just bizarre
Check out Tommy's Honour (the trailer at least) on youtube. The set are costume design was taken directly from the photography of the period. It's so, so good.
Nick great swing, great guy.So sad Payne stewart rest in peace.
just getting into golf this is unreal faldo is a g
Greg Norman has looked 70 for the last 30 years!
Faldo is a good golfer and great broadcaster that actually enjoys the golf he’s watching ,Jim Nantz is ok
He was a hell of a golfer. He’s a terrible commentator. Talks utter garbage and brings everything back to himself wherever possible.
Love the old guy that got Sir Nick's autograph on a visor and said when he gets home he can say he rode with the winner of the open..And he Did!!!!
He had already won the open by then he won in 1987 so had he not won the open that year he'd have still rode with an open champ!
I always remember this Open for Faldo whipping Norman's ass on day 3.
Great vid ☺️
I'd like to thank you from the heart of my bottom.
Nope, didn't get the likes you were hoping for...
Was there a time when the players with a chance were happy to see Norman at the top of the leaderboard...?
Every
It was simply Greg's putting that let him down on the 3rd day
The pressure of the moment always let him down.
That visor has got to be worth some kind of 💸
rad
Absolutely horrific music too
The music is so gaudy it's amazing.
Vintage soft porn soundtrack
Palmer discusses 'not being competitive' - he missed the cut having scored even par over 2 rounds!
That 90's synth-jazz rendition of "Amazing Grace" is as excruciatingly bad as any music I have heard in my life.
Nearly as bad as the fashion of the day
Then they cut to the “Boyz II Men” beat.
Nick Faldo: a great golfer with an ugly taste for sweaters...
But still better than Daly’s taste in sweat tops!
@@petermcgill1315 both in a league of their own, I would say...
How can anyone try conning people that St Andrew's is THE premier course to play? I am not being awkward. But it's the same kind of rubbish that Bond people say when "Oh Ursula Andres coming out of the sea in that bikini is an iconic film clip in Bond history." No it isnt. They are trained to say it. They are expected to say it. ... Just like they say " "St Anrews is THE club to play at" No it isn't. It is flat. It is barren. No trees. Just awind swept field with bunkers that loom like the left over results of German bombing missions during the war. It is BORING. Sorry but it is.
I know this is an old production. but that low grade porn music is just terrible. 😵
What a bad era for golf. In between persimmon and metal wood. Ugly fashion. Television producers that over produced the broadcast. Take nothing away from Faldo though, he was a great champion.
Bad era for Golf?
This was the 'last' great era. Before the fake, graphite, hollow age. Nicklaus. Norman. Faldo. Watson. Seve. You'll never see a golden age of players like that again. Football. Boxing. Baseball. Golf. All peaked in the 80's and 90's. All fell afterwards.
Are you telling me, that Golf got better when bully Tiger Woods showed up? It got worse, friend. Far worse.
In the mid to late 90's, the last truly great era of Golf came to an end. It's been all downhill since.
@@lonestar6709 I thought the 60s, 70s and early to mid 80s were the best. My favorite specifically was the years from the late 60s to early 70s. Seems like sir nick wore those hideous sweater, lol. Awesome player though. I thought the tiger era was garbage. The tour was pretty thin in the 90s, and like u said, the early years of metal woods looked so bad as did the fashion.
However, this is a great era for golf. The players are excellent. True, no one has to ever hit a 3 iron ever again. But, todays metal woods are as beautiful persimmon.
I would like to c the pga no longer considered a major for Asian tournament that paid a gizillion dollars for the players. But I like today’s tour. Also, golf has never been more fun for the average to bad player
@@lonestar6709 you just sound like someone who's endlessly looking back.
Sport has improved, massively, since those eras. Better technology, better fitness, better psychology, better ability.
If you found it more entertaining, that's fine, that's your choice. But no way was it "better" in terms of ability/fitness/skill.
