You know, for anyone wondering if Pinocchio and Jiminy could've done something to help the other boys turned donkeys... they couldn't. One deleted scene had the two of them try to escape with Lampwick (who in that draft could still talk) to not avail since the Coachman and his goons eventually capture him, so, he actually tells them to go on without him because it's already too late for him. Still, even if Lampwick would've been shown to be utterly helpless, Pinocchio would likely have had to bear survivor guilt. Sheesh. Between Lampwick accepting he's just done for and Pinocchio feeling guilty about not having been able to help him, this scene would've been even darker than it already was. The sheer thought that all those boys turned donkeys were utterly hopeless... gee.
I think I still would have appreciated that attempt, instead of Pinocchio abandoning his friend and never looking back. Lampwick was a ruffian and a bad influence, but he _was_ just a boy, like Pinocchio. But I suppose shining a light on every implication would hamper the happy ending.
I feel like that final breakdown transformation conveys his hopelessness pretty accurately. There's a very final sense of "no coming back from this one."
in the italian dub Lampwick screams and begs for his mom with the kind of desperation and pain you would expect from someone who is being eaten alive by something, it truly was traumatizing to see as a kid
Honestly, that sounds worse than this dub of the film. Though it does kinda make sense, he’s turning into a donkey as a punishment. That cannot be a painless experience.
One thing that has always left me perplexed in this scene is the fact that Pinocchio immediately notices when he grows donkey ears and a donkey tail, while Lampwick realizes his transformation only after he has let out a bray and already has the head of a donkey.
You have to remember Lampwick was too arrogant to realize what was happening to him until it was too late. Pinnochio realized it right away because he was on "full alert" and watching Lampwick's unfortunate condition
0:23 Jiminy: Where’d all the donkeys come from? Me: I don’t know, but it sure reminds me of what you said earlier. Jiminy: That there’s something phony about all this? Me: No, what you said to Lampwick. “Go on, laugh! Make a jackass out of yourself!”
Kids watching this: Turning into donkeys is scary! Adults watching this: It's a child trafficking ring! Rarely does a scary movie scene instill more fear in adults than children.
That scene of Lampwick turning is pure gold. The voice actor, Frankie Darro, absolutely killed the delivery! Then 2022 version ruined it with the actor not knowing how to act
Truly messed up on what took place on Pleasure Island but Walt Disney is really trying to WARN the kids back during the 1930s/1940s, what happens when you get out of line...be disobedient, be unruly, always rock an attitude, etc.
Best part about this scene? These madmen scam a bunch of kids out of their humanity and turn them into donkeys… and they get away with it. I’m not saying that in itself is good, what I’m saying is that this is realistic: people do this kinda stuff in real life all the time and are seldom ever caught (they don’t do the donkey thing, but still). And Pinocchio and Jiminy are too busy trying to escape the island without being seen to do anything to help them (not that they could help them in the first place). They have no choice but to let them get away with their crimes.
This is so terrifying… taken away from your family never to be seen again. Turning into donkeys and losing the ability to ever be a human being again. The Coachman is the most sinister villain in Disney. There is no justice as with most villains. He doesn’t die, he doesn’t get what’s coming to him…
And this is how we got Donkey for Shrek movies? At least there are these kind of theories for it! When Lampwick doesn't get any difference between Pinocchio and other boys, maybe this tells Lampwick is somehow permissive, even though Pinocchio is still a doll in this scene and Lampwick is acting some kind of tough guy. I understand if someones have some traumas by these scene and maybe it's so sad they turned into donkeys.

Notice Pinocchio likes his donkey features once the threat of complete TF is gone. I'd have liked if he could have become human and kept the long ears and tail, and so would he. It's not like he'd be that much of a freak. Foulfellow and Gideon walk around with no great attention directed at them.
Geppetto certainly gets over it quick after his initial shock. We love a supportive father 🤗 As far as being a freak goes, it's gotta be a lateral move at worst compared to being a living puppet.

Wednesday 16th October 2024. Pinocchio must be the scariest Disney film ever made! Like a child's dark fantasy/horror film and Pinocchio is the only child in this film who gets a happy, starlight ending! ❤ Virginia.?! :) ;( ;) 😢🫏🐎🐴
The 1940 Pinocchio is 1 star rate and it's ok. But the live action Pinocchio is a a 5/5 star rate because it has Tom Hanks and it is directed by Robert zemekeas.
dude that shot of Lampwick’s silhouette as he struggles to hold onto his last shred of humanity slipping away kept me up for two days
This movie was horrifying to me as a child. This scene still is!
The coachman has got to be the most brutal coldest soulless villains in Disney history who I'd wouldn't even wish upon my worst enemies.
I don't think the coachman was even human. I bet he was some kind of demon. I mean he was the only human with only 4 fingers on each hand.
You know, for anyone wondering if Pinocchio and Jiminy could've done something to help the other boys turned donkeys... they couldn't.
