I was circumcised for technical reasons , but I'm not a Jew, according to rabbis.
The last transfiguration was almost two years ago now.

There's no way anyone else has ever put this much thought into Pinocchio. Not even the writers. I love this man.
most authors would say that the story writes itself when you are in a trance-like state. Their ideas are products of their personal and collective unconscious. So when the authors write books, they unknowingly store in them a vast amount of unconscious content that can be explored from a Jungian perspective. Innumerable associations can be made just like how Peterson brilliantly does here.
@@clkvlk That gives me some perspective as to how stories are made, because the creation of characters and the life that is given to them is something akin to a dreamlike state.
I'm sure they did though...everumy kids or Disney movie or atleast 90% is based on demonic or religion in a "funny kid" story kind of way

Glad to see this lecture back up. I got the privilege of watching the first one he put up which included clips from Pinocchio before the copyright claim from Disney took it down a couple hours ago.

I remember first watching this a few years back. Great stuff and a lot to unpack. I find myself having to rewind and re listen a lot of times to try to digest what you're saying, but it's well worth it

I see revisiting such content as a means of continual learning.
Jordan Peterson is worthy of respect on MANY levels, and I sincerely enjoy hearing his perspectives.. Heading the list among his skill sets In my HUMBLE opinion, is his surprisingly smooth talent of misdirection. Next I bow to the mans ability to weave together patches of assumptive knowledge with very inventive scraps of analogs and similes that sometimes feel a little ponderous, but still convincing.. BUT that being said, in the end I agree wholeheartedly with the man's sincerity and conviction..Peace.
I absolutely love symbolism and archetypal story structure analysis. It's so mind blowing.

Many of my friends are even as adults still totally embedded in their childhoods. I find it so strange personally. I understood wanting the occasional comfort sure, maybe something that lifts your spirits like a childhood meal or movie. But people who choose to perpetually live in their childhood?? Good god no. Dr. Peterson, this lit a fire in me. I paused half way through, and watched Pinnochio for the first time since I was too young to remember it. I recognized sagas in my life that match the three trials - including ESPECIALLY rescuing my Father from the whale, which I believe now I quite literally have. Without belaboring the point, at 35 I finally suddenly recognized myself as someone worthy of the future. There is no other way to describe it than that all at once i was stunned and grateful and terrified and exalting all at the same time. I cannot express my gratitude in this forum, but I hope at some point in the future I will have the opportunity.

as a child of the 70s 80s I feel like the surface messages of Pinocchio were pressed fearfully upon me. I will watch this video on repeat because the deeper complexities of this story are always building and increasing. Thank you for your deep look into this story Jordan Peterson.

I started following your channel when you had 2k subscribers, I remember watching these lectures - they blew my mind. And that's saying something, because I have read all of Nietzsche and Carl Jung's works.
Same here, big fan of Jung and Nietzsche, read most of their works, so it is really nice hearing someone articulate, and use the works of Jung in such a profound manner.
To me, childhood memory, Pinocchio was about telling the truth, or not. Never knew there's more to Pinocchio then 👃👃👃

Complex simplicity. I find it amazing how someone can give a deep breakdown of a subject, in this case Pinocchio, in a way that represents our daily struggles, and how it starts to open doors in our minds, allowing us to answer many of our own questions. This video helped me in so many areas, both personally and professionally.
From 7:50 to 8:15 the message is a perfect message for our development, especially for one who follows Christ and wonders how we mature in our walk.

I haven't seen the movie version (presumably the Disney adaptation) that Peterson is going through, but I've read the book a couple of times as an adult, and I've been pretty amazed at its depth. Good children's literature always seems to be incredibly deep. Like traditional fairy tales seem to have many layers. It's too bad that that's not the case in our contemporary work.
Do Peter Pan. And Alice in Wonderland. These original books are all warnings to parents too.
It’s rare to find depth like this in contemporary writing.
Despite all our modern hubris and delusions of superior worldview our society is plagued by mental weakness and blind spots.

I love when you mentioned that he mastered fire cause at the beginning of the movie Pinocchio almost burned himself with it, by learning from his experience he was able to turn something destructive of the world into something good.

This man has lifted so many from the deep, dark ocean we call modern society.
This is what should be taught before anything else.
Dr. Peterson, I just wanted to tell you that while we don't always agree on certain issues I've realized you are not the big bad wolf the media tries to portray you as. When I took the time to listen to you I realized I agree with you far more times than I disagree. I feel that you take great care with working out your full opinion on things before speaking, and are quite a caring person. You've had a profound effect on me. I grew up in a single-parent home with a father in and out of jail, prison, or rehab. You've changed how I think about things and I have realized I can do things, just one thing at a time to slowly better my life. I have even found myself at 35 crying because of some of the things you have said. I was very depressed after I was hit by an unlicensed driver while I was crossing the crosswalk. I was told before emergency back surgery I was either going to die or never walk again, and while I am alive, I was in a wheelchair and remained in one until I started believing my life was still worth living, and I wasn't going to give up and after a lot of hard work I can walk with a cane today. And I had given up before I heard you talk about making your bed. Now I'm taking the time to make my bed, and clean my room every day. I had stopped doing that and it bugged me. Just doing that has improved my life in ways only a year ago I thought were impossible because making my bed lead me to realize I can help myself if I work hard and change one thing at a time. It lead me to try physical therapy again with a different therapist who didn't tell me I won't walk again, and it paid off. Thank you so much. I will never judge someone without hearing them out again because they may say something that changes my life like you did.
Edit: I'm sure you don't have time to read youtube comments, but I hope you see this long rambling comment because I don't know if there's a better way to thank you. I needed to hear a lot of the things you have written about and said, I thought my life was over when I broke my back in the car accident and as I mentioned was told I wouldn't walk again. I now know I was wrong, the doctors were wrong, and it started with making my bed and changing what I thought I could change and ended up changing what I was told I couldn't. Thank you again so very much. You gave me hope again.
Wonderful way if thinking sir. thanks for sharing your view, we lack exactly this kind of thinker and value observer. we now living in the world where "freedom" is actually a "free-dooms" with people celebrating it day and night. not knowing the end is near and they are no prepared to be thrown into the cliff.
Personally at now 59 years old I have passed several stages or levels that helped me to became an adult, a man and it has been difficult and I suffered a lot because my dysfunctional family ( 8 th of a 9 children family) had left me with many things to repair and mostly no tool or know how to resolve them.
To me, PERSEVERANCE has bee to most effective tool I used.
To summarize my story I became less teenager at 33 when I had my first of my two boys.
I DIG inside me to become conscious of things that I were not conscious because it’s difficult to fix something you don’t know you have or that you refuse to see.
All this story use to make me think to a wonderful Prayer, sorry for the bad translation , it Reminds me of the Serenity Prayer .; My God give me the Serenity to accept the things that I cannot change.
The Courage to change the things that I can and
The Wisdom to know the difference.
The more you pay attention to your real self, there would be more subtle things that will appear so you will have to accept the like it is or try to change it.

I heard this and took it to memory and meditated on it for a very long time, still to this day, many years later it is in my daily talk to the subconscious. "The rock that stands in the ocean is constantly challenged by the waves for its stability. By being grounded in what's important will you rise to the challenge of the waves?" I have looked at this in many ways.

Pinnichio perfectly describes awakening to reality. If u dont control your mind someone else will(puppeteer) until u wake up and become real they will direct your life and you will call it fate. If you dont wake up u will become a heehawing jackass who is nothing more than a resource. Connecting with your consiousness is absolutely the goal of this operation.

I saw Pinocchio when I was probably 9. Still love this story. Dr Peterson makes me enjoy the story even more.
I have made that journey to the underworld several times, have fallen apart many times and been reborn again. recognizing that someone is pulling the strings with me and considering if that was where I wanted to go and then untangling myself from those ropes and starting over. I know where the demons haunt and why. yes, developing autonomy is kind of taboo for them. I played roles, was seduced and see how evil this world can be. much deeper than other people. the pain in it is so deep that for a long period of time and now sometimes still, I wake up and my face and neck are soaked from crying. I have experienced many levels of chaos when all I wanted was to put things in order. back home. from home to home. everything was chaos. the grasshopper was always with me. that has been my salvation, for I come from dark places of my youth. I do have an explanation for J.C. He is there for everyone who pays close attention. Trauma has made me spiritual. I have a long list of traumas. it's like i subscribed to it. Given the time we live in, I assume that I still have a few things to learn and that I will go back to the abyss to come back reborn. I have been in dialogue with my consciousness since about age seven with periods of deep fall to high spiritual consciousness and very clear experiences. I was a low-skilled good-hearted obedient slave who always knew I had to free myself from that. I also returned home many times and found nothing. That is still an issue for me. I've been so desperate at some that God even sent me an angel to fish me back in. My intuition always directs me to God. Yet sometimes a demon manages to get me. For example, if I am sick or through people around me. I see a lot. On different levels. As a low-skilled person, I learned to pay attention. Like some kind of animal instinct. That is it. The same goes for the message that is passed to me. Gepetto trapped in the great whale of limbo is true for many. They linger at a low level of consciousness. This is largely due to the way they are directed in how they should view their history. Many people are only looking for fish. They are low in skills and only want to own. They have more or less lost their animal spiritual intuition. It feels so lonely to me. I think it's lonely for everyone. My first spiritual experience was also my fifth. I was visited by a dragon. He wanted something with my heart and I assure you he didn't get it. I have burned a number of ships in the meantime.
This analogy is always a helpful reminder
It's an example of how archetypes work, and an example of shared human experience. Something about Pinnoccio is "Human" to its core

Like you, I’m very good at seeing and interpreting symbolism. Actually, I’m rather exceptional at it. But we’re also both highly adept in applying philosophy and teaching. However, I think you’re the best that I’ve encountered. I’m likewise drawn to the lessons taught through successes and failures of human behavior, historically. The twentieth century provides a surplus of both and I admit to having been drawn to the atrocities, and can relate to the deep emotional impact they evoke, but examining the past 8,000 years of Western Civilization has furthered my understanding and continues to present new questions.
As I learn, it’s increasingly revealed how little I’ll ever know …or of which I’ll ever become aware. It’s so humbling. Ty for contributing to the search for truth. You’ve been a facilitator and have voluntarily taken on your burden. I’m satisfied when I observe you reacting emotionally about the horrors of the past, the blessings of the present and to the outpouring of appreciation others have shown for the help your work has been to their lives.
Each of these, in my opinion, are good reasons for being overwhelmed by emotion. My personality is very similar in that regard. This might seem a long comment, but I’ve watched over 200 hours of lectures, speeches and interviews which you’ve provided.

Good thoughts. I love art and storytelling. I believe that fiction is the primary way humans evolve at this point, considering how we are no longer in a survival situation as a species. Now we survive bu preserving ourselves in values we teach our children, and the best way to teach is through stories. Well, maybe it is not the best way to teach, but even Jesus taught through parables, so I think there is a good argument for that. What I am trying to get at is, thank you for the insight into this old and frankly confusing story. The way you taught made it truly profound in ways I haven't considered before.

At 21:00 he touches on something that applies quite well to current issues of the 2020s. More folks who think they know better than “the old ways” should listen to this and think about it… quietly. For a long time.

Trying to come up with theories and explanations lead my thoughts down a path that fried my brain for a couple of weeks.
Thinking about it... I think Bloodborne may have been a turning point in my brain chemistry and segway into becoming more interested in interpretations of reality...
I also applaud at the end of JP's videos even as I see them on UA-cam all by myself... I know it's silly, but this guy, his knowledge and wisdom is worthy of that and more
