In this video I talk about oil changes and just how important this maintenance item is for the lifespan of the engine. I go over changing the oil on my Toro ZMaster 4000 zero turn commercial lawn mower. This oil change, although not specifically performed on a vehicle, is very similar to that of an oil change on a vehicle. We deal with draining the old oil, the type and weight of the new oil and the oil filter. All of which are the same type of considerations with a vehicle's oil change.

Common sense tells me, that 10,000 miles is way to far. An hour meter, would be helpful and more precise. The manufacturer's recommendation is usually a "maximum" interval. I agree with you changing the oil more often is the best way to get more life out of an engine, also; changing more often keeps "sludge" and deposits at bay..... I have driven older vehicles most of my life, as an engine (of any type) gets more run time, the oil gets dirty quicker......... and requires oil changes more often. (3/4 of life expectancy or more)

My employer got some new Toyota Priuses in their fleet. The owners manual says to change it every 10k miles lol. It uses 0w16 oil which is synthetic. I still wouldn't run it more than 6k miles without an oil change if it were mine.
$70+ for 3 quarts of oil and a filter lol.. damn. You're just paying for name brand bud. And it's not even pure synthetic, it's a blend.. Almost all modern synthetic oils have a zinc additive (ZDPT). You're throwing money away. All you need is the correct weight and you can use any synthetic oil you choose that contains ZDPT, plus it'll be pure and not conventional blend. Same with the filter, you dont need the Kawasaki filter.. Any good synthetic filter will do.
Also, that air filter really wasnt that dirty at all 😌 But hey, you do you

If your car recommend 0w16 use 5w20, if it recommends 0w20 use 5w30, if it recommends 5w20 use 5w30, if it recommends 5w30 use 10w40, if it recommends 10w30 use 10w40 or 15w40, if it recommends 10w40 use 20w50. Do not rely on viscosity modifiers to maintain your viscosity of oil and to maintain oil film. Use 1 level heavier oil as recommended. Fuel blow by will destroy your oil viscosity fast. I use 15w40 in a vehicle that manufacturer recommends 5w30 because it is better for the engine and because I live in a 25 to 29c climate. Do not trust manufacturers to give you ideal oil viscosity. Change it every 3 to 5k miles.
You are correct that an oil change is the single most effective and important maintenance you can do. I have always been diligent in regular maintenance with all my vehicles and equipment and it shows in the long service life along with trouble free operation you receive in return. Good advice and doesn’t hurt to repeat it even to the converted.

I do like the older vehicles, I drive a 2000 F350 with the old 7.3, and a 2001 VW Golf TDI. Oil changes are pretty simple with both.
Excellent video Jim :) yes when my parents bought new car in 1994 they were so picky and couldn't find dipstick for Engine Oil also I had show them were was ! In 2005 bought new car and could find Oil Filter also Transmission too and I had show them too! So crazy yes and wild !

I will have to trust you on this as I do not know much about mower engines but my cars all get Pennzoil platinum only my 78 camaro gets VR1 racing oil to make that flat tappet cam last thank you for these videos they are very good I am subscribed now

Had a 4000 HDX as a demo last weekend. It’s an absolute BEAST! I’m not in the market for something that crazy but needed to see if the 60 inch deck would work for me.

Please don’t forget those 2 hydrogear 4400 drive transmissions, those are recommended an oil and filter change at 100 hours also and may make for a good video also. Cheers!
Would recommend a break in oil/filter change on your hydros. My residential HydroGear 2800's recommend a break in service at 75 hours. Great Video!

My 2015 Wright Stander has the Kawasaki FX691V engine and at about 60 hours a year she gets an annual oil change with Amsoil small engine 10w40 and an oversized oil filter. The Hydro system gets an annual change with Amsoil Hydro 20w50 (also loaded with ZDDP) and a wright OEM filter (this is not an oil filter, it’s a gear lube filter FWIW).
Wright used to recommend Mobil-1 15w50 for the hydro oil but they found it would shear down and the professional mowers were having their hydro pumps grenade, so Wright has their own 15w-50 hydro lube oil but the rep said they are happy with the Amsoil product no question.

You can save a couple of bucks buying the Donaldson brand air filter. They make the Canister for your mower and every canister style filter under the sun. Plus, they are the best quality filters on the market. I switched one of my landscapers over to Amsoil small engine oil and I can tell you the oil at 100 hours still had an amber color. It's rated for 200 hours and while I think that is possible, we still service at the 100 hour mark. You can buy it direct from Amsoil if you don't have a local dealer that carries it.
A word of advice, even though the filter is mounted horizontally you can partially fill it with oil before installing, about halfway, and let it sit for 10-15 minutes the oil will be absorbed with the filter media and will not leak out when installing. I have had Kawi-equipped commercial mowers for 20 years and have NEVER had an internal engine problem and I try and change every 35-40 hours

@@1RoadGarage I use the Kohler synthetic oil in my Kohler twin cylinder pro seires engine it has The hydrolic lifter's instead of a regular over Head valve which has to.ajusted every so often
I have a nearly 30 year old toro self propelled mower with a briggs and stratton engine and i've only used straight 30 weight oil in it and it still runs great and in fact I think all I ever used was straight 30 weight oil in my mowers. I either use valvoline or briggs and stratton oil in them since I've only owned briggs except on 2 occassions one was a kohler and the other a tecumseh engine and those engine were junk.

I have a 20 inch push mower that's a 2003 or 4 model. I use 30 weight oil that's made for the mower. I try and change the oil and spark plug every year. It does over heat when it's hot outside. But other than that it still runs. The blade needs sharpened. I don't really know how to do that. I know more about maintaining a vehicle more so than a push mower. Anyways I change my oil in my vehicle every 3000 miles. I use Pennzoil 5W X 30 Platinum Highmile Synthetic oil. The oil filter is changed every 3000 miles also. My filters I use is K&N. Like them alot. You want a vehicle and mower to run you maintain it. Enough said.
If you have a "safety filter" (dual air filter) you can or may used compressed air to clean the outer one a couple of times. ( I do it on my farm equipment all the time) Those outer filters on a farm tractor are north of 100$ now. Buying a new one is best, just saying you can save money by cleaning a couple of times without risking anything. In the old days everything just had "one" filter.

Of course vehicle manufacturers like 10k to 15k oil changes. The engine will make it through the warranty, but not much longer. You will also need new turbos with long intervals after the warranty expires.

Blow the deck off after you mow to help reduce the build up around the spindles and consider some kind of coating underneath the deck (ceramic, oil, etc.) My next mower will definitely get ceramic coated or some type of coating on the painted surfaces. I really want to prevent rust!
I park mine inside at all times and have coated the underside of the deck with fluid film. 👍
Maintenance is good preventive Maintenance is probably best.
I personally change the engine oil on my mower every 50hrs (kawasaki) and service the hydrogear transmissions at 100hrs. Maybe thats over kill but its what i do. Ive used Amsoil supertech and valvoline 10w30 oil and never had an issue and used a synthetic filter either wix xp or fram xg3614. Only time i ever had really dirty oil was when i had the factory filter and a regular wix filter. After using synthetic filters my oil stayed cleaner between changes. I also cut open my oil filters too and see what I can find.
I do 5k oil changes on my 20 f150 and my wifes 21 durango. Full synthetic oils and filters have been great for me. To each their own you know.
But too the point people should do regular oil changes.
When your warranty is up you could use a Fram. People spaz out about Fram filters. I’ve used the orange Fram for 20 years on a John Deere with a Kawasaki. Used Mobil 1, 10W-30. Changed out oil and filter every fall or spring. Never burned oil. I gave the John Deere to my sister because it’s got 1700 hrs and is not worth much money. If the battery is good it will start it’s that reliable. Got a Toro timecutter with the Toro engine and that seems to be built very well. I just blow the air filters off because I don’t live in a dusty area. They last for 2-3 years. When the warranty is over I’ll use Fram perhaps the orange, silver, or gold one and Mobil 1, 10W-30.
There's just something therapeutic about changing your oil. Also watching this video in 1.5x speed works perfectly.

Mobil 1, 10W-30. How do I know? The John Deere with a 17 hp Kawasaki I gave to my sister had 1700 hrs on when I gave it to my sister. Zero oil consumption. Still start perfectly. If there was an issue she’d let me know. Zero issues.
This might blow some minds, but there are some that have 30,000 mile recommended oil change intervals 😳 Recommended and how often you actually change it is different though.
I found the best solution to making your oil change way better, use 1quart of lucas oil stabilizer and 160z. Of prolong oil additive with every oil change, the lucas cushions metal to metal parts as well as helps move the oil more efficiently, the prolong creates the ultimate protection for less friction for metal to metal parts.
Never use additives in your oil!! @motoroilgeek says this all the time!! Don't do it
I use Amsoil and change it every 33 hrs in my mower, 5k in my Super Duty 7K in my cars and 24k in my junker 1990 Accord with 300K.

Amsoil small engine oil is better. I've never seen a fx801v start so hard. I would be more concerned about that vs 50hr oil change. I would definitely get ahold of my dealer about the starting issue.

Wasting money on that oil without a doubt. I'm sure it's OK, but it's far from anything special, except the premium you paid for the Kawasaki name. It's probably "Kendal". It's OK. Good oil, but if you paid more than $6-8/qt. too much.. Find a cross-reference for that filter also. I'm sure it's a good filter, just double the price.
Change your oil once a year and forget tracking hours. And do not warm it up before draining the oil. It is 10W oil cold. Everything that was ever going to drain down was drained down...then you started it. You will get LESS oil out on the drain now unless you let it drain for a week. 10W oil is almost watery. Multi weight oil gets thicker as it warms, that how it works.
Drain the oil cold, after setting at least over night. It's not 1965 anymore. V-Twin Motorcycle oil has zinc in it also, but pricey, buy it at Walmart. Or if you really want superior oil at a good price, Belrey EXP Ester Synthetic or Synthetic blend on Amazon. It is an American Company (well respected by motorcycle racers)and very competitively priced. You can by zinc additive on Amazon also. Be very conservative with it. Measure, don't guesstimate.
That air filter isn't remotely dirty. Give it a quick blow with an air gun if you must but it's barely dirty.

@@1RoadGarage Sorry Jimmy, not personal. You are very correct about the regular oil change being important for longevity, but checking the oil before every use is important too. In NC where I lived i had a 2.75hr mow on a snapper zero turn with 61" cut. I feel you Bro.
On an air cooled engine that uses only 3qts, better keep it near topped off before each mow. Needs all the oil for cooling and wear protection but don't over fill. Messes with the PCV breather system.
Also, use a leaf blower to clean it off every time. Those fins and screens on it must be clear of debris. Leaving grass on top of the deck will cause it to rust because holds moisture. Last tip: Lower the air pressure in the Drive tires to around 15lbs. for a little better ride.

The Manufacturers want to sell you another car in 4-5 years hence the RIEDICULOUS oil change intervals
5w30 oil is not ideal for your SUV engine longevity!!! Why? The manufacturer 1. Has incentive to make sure your engine does not last super long. 2. Manufacturer is influenced by government to have maximum fuel efficient cars even at cost of engine longevity they will recommend thin oils, 3. The manufacturer is influenced by EPA to have lowest emission possible so the oil will not be ideal for engine longevity. What is best for that engine in your Suburban is 10w40 or 15w40. Or in very hot climates 20w50 would be way better for that engine than a thin 5w30 engine oil.
It is worth loosing 1% fuel economy and emissions output for maximum engine longevity. Manufacturer recommend too thin oils for other reasons than what is ideal for the engine.
Now they have these transmissions with "lifetime" fluid. That's a joke. The factory considers lifetime to be when the warranty is up! Lol. Idk about you but I want my vehicle to last longer than 100k or whatever the warranty is. Change that fluid! Figure out a siphon configuration if they didn't put a drain plug on the trans.
25 horsepower engine! lol, there have been a fair number of cars built without that much power.
