I sent a small contribution for sharing the real numbers you experienced. This saves me from mistakes later! Thank you for showing what it was really like.
I met a cyclist in South America who planned to stay 6 month with USD 6000 but he ended staying 12 month because he managed to spend only USD 500 per month. You are an incredible person Jin and there is not enough people like you in this world.
I have many reasons in my head not to do an extended bike tour - then I watch you and start thinking everything is possible and I could try at least a moderate trip... Perhaps I will watch one of your videos and walk out the door. I admire you very much.
If you just cycle, free camp and cook yourself it can be extremely cheap. Many people do it for just a few hundred dollars a month. Most of the costs are due to overhead (insurance, bicycle maintenance etc) and food. After that it depends a lot on where you go and how much luxuries you want. I remember getting sticker-shock after arriving in Sydney. Had traveled extremely cheap for a while, just food and a couple of dollars on national park camp sites. Then in Sydney just 2 or 3 nights in a hostel was more expensive then all my expenses the month before....
Thank for this Jin, its great to have some realistic channels like yours. I've hosted in Warmshowers for many years so I've met a lot of people starting their cross-europe to Asia trips. Some have very unrealistic ideas of cost and how much they can earn doing this things like social media. The more 'real' information there is like this out there, the better.
Now they have warm showers that host bicycle tourists. We had one family from France with two children 7 and 9 on tandems. They stayed at our house and they said they had stayed almost every night with warm showers host since starting in Vancouver to Florida. That is another possibility for cheap travel.
Apologies for the settings of our economy in NZ. Food is expensive by world standards - in a country that is overflowing with its own produce. Why? To make profits for the small number of people who own food producing businesses. That's capitalism. Most NZ food is exported and sold overseas at premium prices. Because of the ideology of so-called free markets, locals have to suffer similar premium prices for NZ food. Imported food has the additional costs of transportation and then is sold into a market where price settings are already elevated.
Brilliant real-world data. Very complete; extremely rare and valuable. And let me just say, biking around the planet on just 5000$ a year is freaking heroic. You rock.
I traveled only once, made a trip around the alps. Started in Germany rode trough Switzerland ,france ,italy to croatia and back trough slovenia and austria and italy Switzerland again. Took me about 6 weeks, I think I spent about 350/400€, but I didn't need no visa, so most of the money I spent on food.
I really like that your fully transparent and honest! Some people will say it's easy to travel for cheap, but it's not, need a lot of self esteem, hard work, time etc... But you gain from the experience! Money is important but you should never be tie to it. ;)
Thanks Jin, such an inspiration. Keep these videos coming. Could you discuss how you planned you route according to seasons and weather type? How did you plan that. Cycling and camping in freezing winter I suppose can be done but it makes it all much more of a challenge.
Great breakdown of costs (and categories) of your travels. I have down several tours but not longer than two months at a time. Once pandemic eases I plan to possibly head out for multiple years. I am budgeting for $10,000-$12,000. I will bring camping gear but I know I will end up in hostels/ cheap hotels more than I want due to back. Plus I want to add a few good touristy experiences in.
If you are still in Australia, please do a cycling trip on the Bicentennial National Trail from Cairns to Melbourne. It would be an epic ride to showcase the route and your camping skills. Thanks and good luck!
Wow not only are you courageous and probably braver than i'd ever be (considering u cycled around the world!), you are quite articulate and smart as well. It's evident through the in-depth explanation of your budgets & with the use of graphs/spreadsheets. All i can say is, respect & hope you're enjoying your stay in Australia! ps. i've been using your QR code scanner app ever since i downloaded it haha
Great video, Jin. Well presented and well thought out. Of course, we still love to see you struggling up mountains or getting caught in rainstorms, headwinds and blizzards … but apart from that … one of your best videos!
Thank you so much for sharing your experiance & the analytical expenses Biking Around the World. I have been a biker for over 40 years of course never travel more than 350 Mil trips I can understand Travel Around the World its a Dream of meeting diferent coltures plus your personal experiance means alot for everyone who appreciate what it takes to accomplish what you already have Its a Heroic endurance and efforts = Amazing!!!!
very detailed, love it. I rode with my brother from Vancouver BC to California (11 days, unfortunate knee injury for me in North California... plan was to go to the Mexico border) on a Surly LHT. We camped at the State park bike camp spots ($10USD per night) Food was whatever we wanted throughout the day probably 30-40USD per day. My next cycling trip is to Cycle around Japan (My wife is from Kyoto so I will start from that point.)
Yes in New Zealand food is very expensive, yet our hourly wages are not all that great (compared to Australia or USA/Canada). We locals struggle with it. Hope you enjoyed your visit though,
Great video on the costs of touring. I oured all over western europe and canada between '89 and 91 and found the costs really cheap. I would knock on a farmers door and ask for permission to camp in a field as this would usually include access to running water for cooking and it was a great way to meet the locals. 25yrs later our cycle touring budget is around $300aud/day for europe except for Sicily which was only about $150aud . Being older camping has lost it's appeal somewhat :-)
Hey, have you included minimal amount for bribes (corrupted officials at check points, and traffic cops etc) I love your expense summary sheet, and thank you very much for the helpful info...
finally some honest, realistic and frank breakdown of costs and aspects like visa. i'm tired of reading and watching people with strong passports (brits, americans etc) selling dreams to people need visa to travel to every next border. needless to talk about how much importance people give to their bikes but nobody talks about basic stuff like morning sores after waking up on a mat. thank you for all the video and stay safe :)
I feel so sorry that some people can't travel easily because of their passport. It discourages them a lot as I've witnessed it. Hope it gets better in the future.
Well done girl, such a fantastic feat cycling around the world..but to do it on such a small budget is every bit as impressive! I like my creature comforts too much now I think I would have to budget a little more 😀🤣
Hi Jin! Omg, wow, I just found some of your videos. I am experiencing some bad depression atm so I was thinking of something interesting/wild to do to get excited about life. I love nature and camping so I thought maybe I should try to cycle around Australia. So I looked on UA-cam to see if anyone had done this. Then I saw your videos. You are so amazing and inspirational. Cycling through the outback with the flies on the bumpy rocky tracks and still smiling and being grateful is so cool! So I watched some of these Australian videos then I saw this is just the end of your trip around the whole world. 🤯 wow!!! I am going to watch some of your videos in other countries now. I live in Brisbane btw. Did you go home? Or are you still surfing on the Gold Coast? Thank you for the videos. Luke 😃

I will travel around the world by camping car. I heard travel cost is high in Europe. But I consider cycling arond Europe after hearing cycling cost not high in Europe. Thant you so much!
Im thinking of those size 20" foldable bike with gears for an adventure within brisbane. For a change, parked my motorcycles at home and start riding or so called pedalling........😘😘😘😘😘
Your Africa biking videos have convinced me that the northern tip of Morocco is the only biking place in Africa for me. So, my route would be North America to South America, Morocco (that's it for Africa), Europe (Spain-France-Germany-Poland-Lithuania-Latvia-west part of Russia) to Asia (east part of Russia-Kazakhstan-Mongolia-China), Australia (Adelaide-Melbourne-Sydney-Brisbane), skip New Zealand (been there, too damn expensive and hilly), finish in the United States (San Francisco, California to Austin, Texas).
Awesome video! 👍 I have always wonder about the cycling travel costs and is good to get your perspective, especially when you been there and done it. Being hungry is normal for a regular cyclist. When I was younger (gosh I feel old) , I constantly felt hungry also because cycling. Regularly cycling put a person’s metabolism into warp speed drive!
It is hard to fathom why Australia is way more expensive that almost anywhere else. We are a resource rich country but manufacture nothing and seem to import foods we could grow here easily. Very odd to say the least I was shocked to see a continental cucumber in woolies was $4 😯. You can though, get all your vitamin b requirements from one of those as Jin clearly knows 🤗 It is tough on the road as your needs nutritionally are vastly different than when living a stable / normal life. Pasta and vitamin pills might be the go 🤷♀️ Personally, I live on sludge 😂 Whatever I have ? I cook 👩🍳 I must say that on the few longer tours I have done over the years ? People have been for the best part very kind / generous. I agree with a comment here that you could do it cheaper camping out etc, plus Warmshowers ( I have hosted cycle tourists via Warmshowers in the past ) When, well, IF, what with this supposed deadly flu seemingly ravaging the world, I hit the road to ride around / across / everywhere in between, to Ride Around Australia, I would take advantage of Warmshowers and definitely camp as much as I possibly could. Another good idea is to be as prepared as you can pre tour. Some good information in this video I must say
I heard foods at Korean grocery is expensive too sadly. #1 reason too many people in a small land #2 The land is mountainous so there is not enough land to farm. #3 too many small farms to grow massive foods. We need a big farm company to improve farm efficiency but people won't like a big company. I think Europe is most reasonable for cheap good quality foods at the grocery stores.
Australia is not cheap, but Jin’s expenses there mainly reflect that she was more settled. For much of the time she had jobs, lived in cities, went out, and basically lived more like everyone else rather than a nomadic tent dweller in the rain, wind and dust. It wasn’t the worst place in the world to be trapped by covid.

Thank you, that was helpful!
Excellent video! Very, very informative.
Awesome video! 👍
I have always wonder about the cycling travel costs and is good to get your perspective, especially when you been there and done it.
Being hungry is normal for a regular cyclist. When I was younger (gosh I feel old) , I constantly felt hungry also because cycling. Regularly cycling put a person’s metabolism into warp speed drive!
I am glad you solve your curiosity with my video :)
Awesome Content..!!..ism glad fijian and new zealand ppl were friendly
Amazing video Jin!! Congrats and thanks for share. How are your thoughts? I hope the bad feelings went far away.
thank you great content. safe travels.
Thank you for the useful basic info
Hi Jin, have you thought of reaching out to sponsors such as for the bike you ride or clothes? I think a lot of people are doing that now
I don't need their free stuff to be honest as I have everything. haha. I will only advertise their product if they pay me good money. haha
I hope 🙏 you are ok 👌 with your traveling 🤩👍
It is hard to fathom why Australia is way more expensive that almost anywhere else. We are a resource rich country but manufacture nothing and seem to import foods we could grow here easily. Very odd to say the least
I was shocked to see a continental cucumber in woolies was $4 😯. You can though, get all your vitamin b requirements from one of those as Jin clearly knows 🤗
It is tough on the road as your needs nutritionally are vastly different than when living a stable / normal life.
Pasta and vitamin pills might be the go 🤷♀️
Personally, I live on sludge 😂
Whatever I have ? I cook 👩🍳
I must say that on the few longer tours I have done over the years ? People have been for the best part very kind / generous.
I agree with a comment here that you could do it cheaper camping out etc, plus Warmshowers ( I have hosted cycle tourists via Warmshowers in the past )
When, well, IF, what with this supposed deadly flu seemingly ravaging the world, I hit the road to ride around / across / everywhere in between, to Ride Around Australia, I would take advantage of Warmshowers and definitely camp as much as I possibly could.
You are very professional. Happy :-)
Very interesting and good to watch. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it :)
