5 lessons from travelling the world by bike

- This year I plan to make 30 videos that help you to live a more purposeful and fulfilled life. It’s been three years since I finished the bike trip. Since returning to the UK, I’ve focused on building a life away from the camera. I’ve become more private in what I share and as a result, my UA-cam channel has become somewhat dormant. I want to keep this balance of privacy but also create videos that rather than just entertaining people, have the effect of helping people to make changes to their life.
What better place to start than to make a video that bridges the gap between the world bike trip aCnd my current life.
I’m excited to share my thoughts and lessons with you over the coming year. I'm going to be making videos about leadership, travel, business, sales, productivity, and human performance. This is not an exhaustive list and I plan to follow my interests to share what I think you will find value from.

I appreciate you Adam. I found long distance biking as a great form of therapy. I lost two children in 3 years and biking has saved my life. You’ve inspired me to bike the dalton. @@1unsung971 my daughter and son were both born With a very rare skin disease. babies mother and I are both non symptomatic carriers of the disease. its called junctional herletz epidermolysis bullosa or JHEB. its known as the worst disease youve never heard of. biking saved me from losing myself. 1 in 10000 are non symptomatic carriers. idk what the odds are. ive only met one other family in alaska who have had kids with the similar disease there are several sub types. they live close to the same town as mother. bearing sea coastal town,

Absolutely, NEVER squash the spirit of giving. When we accept "gifts" from others, what we are "giving" is the opportunity for others to give. If we only ever give to others, but refuse to accept what others offer us, then we are in essence killing the spirit of love from flowing through the body of humanity. This was a tough lesson for me to learn because this is a hard thing to do because we're often trained up not to take from others if we don't need it, or maybe we feel that we are way more fortunate than the people trying to give to us, and that is when our desire to not be a burden on others can put a serious kink into the free flowing spirit of love that is often displayed in action by acts of giving, sharing, help others in what form. I've also learned, the hard way, that even if I don't need it, I always accept the kindness of others because in my acceptance of their "gift" our souls meet, and for a brief moment we get to share the precious gift of time (life) with each other over an act of love and kindness. I've been a full time bike rider (no driver's license) since 2004, and that's not just daily commuting rides, or rides to run errands, but also multi week bike tours a few times a year, and since I have been riding pretty much 300 days a year since 2004, I have had lots of opportunities to give and receive the precious gift of love from others while out on the highways and byways, and that is what makes a ride truly special and unique. Keep on riding, keep on giving and keep on receiving. Peace.
I found the hardest part of a trip like that is connecting with people when you get back.
I lived on a sailboat for four years and experienced many of the same things you did while traveling/living by bike. I left my community and missed it terribly. (I also missed my bike!) Most people are kind. We don't need a lot of stuff to be happy. Haida Gwaii is an amazing place! Thank you for guiding me down memory lane.
Great comment about being the person to create community after you get home. It’s often only 1 or 2 people who can bring everyone together and make things special for another 40 people, having one more of those “community maker” people who give a shit is actually a huge step change for many.

thats so true what you say about community. I´ve been travelling for a few years now because I want the freedom and adventure, but it does get lonely sometimes. it would be amazing to find the perfect travelling companion. thanks for your video and your amazing adventure!

Hi Adam, I found your channel only yesterday when looking to see travellers in Alaska! Absolutely fascinating and what a beautiful trip. Boy you are some cyclist!! And this video today reflects my own confusion at the moment - the desire to be free and disconnect from all the chaos I thought perhaps I was only looking for, but now I am not so sure and I think I'm looking for community too. A balance! I forward to hearing your ideas. Thank you.
It’s a tough one that I find myself struggling to balance. I think the answer for me is to put in time and patience into building community. Giving more than I receive and being consistent. Freedom on the road then feels secure when you know you have a community to return to.
Disconnecting from the chaos is made easier on a bike tour but with it comes a different type of chaos. It’s more localised and is usually in the form of bike repairs, personal interactions and dealing with loneliness.
I will return to the road at some point but I doubt it will ever be for as long as 18 months. I just love the people I see daily too much.

Holly cow Adam...it is so good to see your video. I was subscribed to your channel but it got away from it but I am back. It is great to see you on UA-cam again and I really enjoyed your content regarding post life after a major bicycle tour. Many things you experienced in that year, but I think you are so much richer for the trials and tribulations your experienced. The topic of what happens after such an adventure is something that rarely gets discussed and I know for me after crossing the US from the Pacific to the Atlantic along the northern territory , I had a really hard time adjusting to the old life...I did give up my car and it has been great for my health, both mental and physical but not so much with the ladies but not dating keeps more money in my pocket. Adam, you were one of my inspirations when I went on my first bicycle tour in 2019. I did my second one last year, which was more people focused than cycling focused. I've learnt so much through those trips, and the solitude helped a lot in enabling the learning. But lesson #5 is a hard truth. There is a freedom in charting your own path (literally), but it comes with loneliness and the deep longing for, well, belonging. So glad to see an update from you, and hope to get to meet you in person some day to share our experiences. Until then, have a good one (:

5:41 as someone who already has 4 bikes ( 3 gifts 1 bought) I needed that. I was going to buy a dedicated touring bike, and although I could it wouldn’t be what would make me happy and I don’t exactly need it to start touring. Thanks!

Spot on Adam! Thanks for sharing your beautiful insights and life lessons. They really resonated with me. I'm a longtime cyclist who is rediscovering bike touring in my retirement and these are just the type of life lessons I am trying to incorporate into my life. I'm a better person on a bike!!

Ok, mi amigo, I am certainly an admirer of yours after hearing about this trip, but you really do need to be corrected on this erroneous statement you've made @ 4:34 about possessions... I have a churango...it makes me happy...I have a nylon string guitar...abosultely makes me beam with joy... have a german shepherd...he makes me very happy....I have a flute....totally happy that I have it...I have a DJI Mavic mini, it made my trip in Indonesia a happier one and when I revisit the photos I have taken with it, I am made super happy, yes, when I am able to take it out these days I marvel at how awesome it is and how amazing the photos are, I am made happy by this possession.
My lad, there is a wise way to declare part of what you are saying..."buying many things can create many burdens, be careful not to burden yourself this way..." and, "there is a happiness that money cannot buy, it is love and the reward of loving all people, so be careful to love people and use things, not the other way around. "
These are the things that the wise men and women of the world are saying, but to say that possessions cannot make you happy is indubitably false.

If you can afford it and as you say they bring you joy I don’t see the issue. If your skint and you find yourself still buying stuff for no reason, that’s more of what I was getting at.
Love this! Thanks so much Adam, great tips for life. I switched off from mainstream news for over 3 years. Not to be ignorant but for the sake of mental health. Inevitably it reduced the fear of others and the perceived world. That in itself can propel more kindness towards to others. When I went travelling, I found the overwhelming majority of people are kind and giving. Keep building that wonderful community 🌊🦭
I learned #2 at an early age. I haven't watched the news since I was 17. Sometimes I felt anxious, nervous or sad at random times at random places. Because I did an hour of meditation daily at that time, it naturally made me question my thoughts and feelings and I found out those bad thoughts and feeling came from negative information streams, with the News being the biggest one. I haven't watched the news for almost 10years. Where as I used to feel anxious and unsafe around people, now I am glad I have people in sight when I feel unsafe.

Thanks for sharing your wisdom, Adam. This is very relevant given the current global situation.
I've always found when cycling -- whether far from or close to home -- that cycling and walking lets us see the world more fully than driving in a car. We can really see and experience what life is like in each particular place, because we are traveling at a slower pace that allows us to more fully experience each place, and each group of people.
Geopolitical borders are recent, often arbitrary and unnatural. So much conflict could be avoided by dismantling these borders and abolishing all religions. 1995 -1996 I rode from Singapore to UK, through the Stans. Borders are areas of friction, fear and high drama. I would like to remake the World without borders. This is a marvellous video. Thank you. Go well, live strong.
I'm going to disagree with you on "abolishing all religion" they've tried that before obviously and it means punishing people for following a religion except for atheism, that is, they're allowed to believe there is no creator and we're here by chance. Does that sound like something you'd like to be in charge of?
I'm a Christian but I think freedom of religion has worked pretty well in the U.S. (and other places), and that's the opposite of wiping out religion.

I have resided in Las Vegas Nevada since Oct of 2021 from being born and raised in San Diego, CA for over 50 years: Now as a food courier, after having been my Father's Caregiver for three years, I appreciate the fact that I can now use more of my spanish (which I took 6 years of classes in Spanish since Jr. High School - College). A lot of people fail to know the benefits of being bi or multi-lingual as I myself from my families blood line are of mixed races.
You really helped get me Into touring Adam! You also helped get into south East asia. Thanks for the inspiration

Traveled in France with my old bike for a year..back packing in South Africa... now I live in Australia. I'm originally from Switzerland 🙂

i go in small bike tours for 10-15 day since i have cats and can not leave them for long , , and every time i see bike tourer and i have time , i seat with them and buy them a beer :)
I want to recommend the movie Secret Life of Walter Mitty if you haven't seen it, it's an inspiring travel movie.
Also about the second one, someone said they would be worried about their safety in Israel where I'd been and I thought that was ridiculous because they're from Flint, not far from Detroit. There's probably a reason they had moved to west Michigan, but still. We were safe in Israel because there was tension between Israeli Jews and Palestinians but no animosity toward Americans.

During my work, I travelled to numerous countries. I came to the same conclusion as you did, which I think is the most important lesson ever.
99 % of people are good, kind, and just want to be happy, same as you want to be happy. I met the kindest people in Pakistan and the Iran. If you believe officials, these are the worst in the world. I travelled to South Africa being told don't go there on a motorbike, it's the most dangerous country in the world. I haven't had one bad encounter. I lost a small banknote from my wallet, in a very poor village in Indonesia. A young boy brought it back to me, with the shiniest happy face one can imagine.
It's not that the news are bad, or lie. But it is a very small slice of the reality only.
I don't watch the news much except for the weather occasionally because I live in Minnesota and we can have crazy snowstorms and it's good to be prepared. I don't get why people watch the news, it's depressing.

Haida Gwaii is awesome. Actually about eight of us rode up there from Vancouver Island specifically for the Edge of the World music festival, but we cycled all over the North Island. It was great, although it rained all through the festival.

enjoyed this video Adam! would be interesting to hear more about how you have been engaging in community , I think it's maybe interesting angle to talk about place in this too. i wonder if there's more internal migration in the UK since so many more go to university, but I feel for friends who stayed in the town we went to school at because they were suddenly on their own and without the social scaffolding uni provides people

That’s such an interesting perspective, and one I’ve never considered. I felt like the minority for going to university. Probably a result of being from a council estate. Most people I went to school with still live in my home town, even if they did leave for a couple of years.
Nothing quite beats buying a touring bike. Best investment I’ve ever made.

I don’t think I’ll be doing a really long tour anytime soon. I’m really happy with the balance I have with my life and a big tour (over a month) would pull me away from that too much.
That said, I have dreams about walking the pacific crest trail one day so who knows.

John Bishop is a legend. I really enjoyed watching the interview with you both. I didn’t know he was a bike tourist too. You interviewed him at Bournemouth which is where I live too. What a small world. We’re from different areas but we’re both Northerners.

Hmmm, I don't do the last one. At 71, and in part as a consequence of Covid-19, but mainly as a result of my life-long struggles with anxiety and depression, I've withdrawn from friends and community. Part of my increasing interest in bikepacking is because I can do it away on my own, like a hermit. To be honest I haven't missed the belonging. My anxiety has decreased, and I'm much more in control of my mental health. So yeah, I always valued community, Now I've withdrawn I don't feel lonely or sad. I just feel more even-tempered.
I don't know what that says about my selfishness or my failing to contribute to community. It is just how I cope.
You're maybe very introverted, that's not a bad thing, so long as you aren't mean towards others which I'm sure you're not.

Great video, Adam. When I decided to cycle across Europe, I knew I was embarking on an incredible journey. (I have cycled across Europe three times). Along the way, I saw firsthand how different countries and communities worked-the beauty and the hardships. As I plan to cycle to Africa in January, I understand how important it is to go in with an open mind and no expectations. Life doesn't always turn out how we plan, and that's ok. During my journey, I've discovered the truth of the old saying: no plan survives its first contact with the real world. If you happen to be along the route in April when I'm cycling to Wales, I'd love to hear your story. what unit were you in? I was in 7/16AAB

About dangerous places…A few years ago, we arrived on our motorcycles in Los Cabos, Mexico. We felt slightly scared, because at that time it was the most homicidal town in the world. When we left a restaurant, we noticed that we were followed by somebody… it was a waiter, waving with my wallet. ‘Sir, you forgot!’
So, between murdering each other, Mexicans can be very nice people indeed. Like everywhere else you go.

Lots of plans but not sure if I’ll film any. Im heading to Norway shortly and have just returned from a week skiing in the Alps.
