Will do.
As usual, the first link didn't work but the second one did. I wonder why.
Love seeing a fellow 'Surlite'; have a single-speed Karate Monkey that has been awesome and really one of the best bikes I've had in years in terms of sturdiness and versitility.
Surly Bikes. This is your most loved and ridden bike ever. Give this girl a sponsorship !!
Surly's are solid rides and I like the friendly 'secret hand-shake' amongst those of us who have one; always cool vibes. I have a '18 Karate Monkey running in single-speed mode and it's been a great 'one-bike'. Adding the Moloko bars made an already solid bike that much more comfortable and versitile.
Humanoid of Surly for sure!
As a surly dealer I don't even get support... But yes i still love surly too and use Surly Tyres on both my fat bike and Downhill hardtail bike. I also used Surly on my tour for a long time.
@@ElectronicPleasure If they helped her out would set a president, you only have to literally ride around the world!!! Honestly a positive advertisement/ PR opportunity waiting for Surly here. Send them an email?
Love her, she truly is a committed touring cyclist
That shot at 6:11 is hilarious! And yes, Surly really, really, really should sponsor you.
That's my fav too :)
Surly don't give a shit. I've contacted them about various things with their bikes for long distance touring and their attitude is we know best you don't so feck off.
@@alexmorgan3435 that's probably because they want you to look at their new products
@@nickwf70 No. They genuinely don't give a shit. At one point I had 3 Surly bikes. If you cut me in half you would have found the Surly name running through my body like a stick of rock. Not any more. I now ride other brands of bike Kona, Cube, Trek and Brompton. Surly lost me a long time ago.
@@alexmorgan3435 yeah I must admit I feel the same way about surly these days. I have 3 of them, last one I bought I was disappointed as it's too flexi, very heavy, bloody slow and thier prices take the piss so I'm looking elsewhere next time.
I started touring when I was 16 and that was over 50 years ago! I also have a Surley long haul trucker (my 45 year old Dawes Galaxy is resigned to being a city bike) and Brooks saddle, Ortlieb panniers and handlebar bag, and even the same fuel canister! I totally admire your 10 years of solo touring around the world. Very inspiring. I'll look forward to more of your videos.
you are awesome!
wow that bike need to be in a museum
Indiana Jones voice: It belongs in a museum!!!
No, that bike needs to be ridden for years to come.
We still have your old Brooks saddle. Travel well and stay safe. Martin and Karen, Brisbane…
Hi Martin!! Thank you for amazing gift! I've sent the message on FB!! Love you guys!! :)
Peace in the world, being brothers and sister From people that came from nowhere is very nice thing
Some bike company needs to give this woman her own model.
Jin I especially loved this video! It was so practical. Also, I really like how you use the equipment until it is worn out. That shows it’s true quality.
I am so happy to hear you like this content as it was hard working to edit :) It's my personality that I like to keep things. When I was kids, I kept a few small rocks 😂. But actually taking rock from other countries is illegal so I was collecting coins. It was still heavy but lighter than rock. haha
I've toured for 4 years (with a six month break between each one year leg) and I'm amazed how similar our setups and gear is. Surly, Brooks, Ortlieb, platform pedals, Schwalbe... great minds think alike. :)
I did start on a LHT but switched to a Troll with upright swept back bars, and with disc brakes. After a bad crash with wet and muddy rim brakes I'd never go back. I'm still on heavy duty 26" wheels. Work great for me and I've never had problems with them in the field... though I have replaced the whole set a couple of times.
Pro-tip: cut the top few inches off a mid sized plastic coke bottle and slip it over the top of your water bottles like a protective sleeve. Really cuts down on stomach problems.
Good luck.
I miss meeting cycling traveler on the road and we talk about bicycle hahahaha. You know that.. haha.. You remind of that! haha. Thank you for sharing your travel experience and tip :)
You speak with such love and respect for your bike. I respect you so much for how you talk about this whole endeavor of yours
You are awesomely simple and simply awesome! I remember watching your videos years ago and you are still there, giving bike touring its real colours. If I was Surely, I'd employ you right away, and I'd give you a new bike!!
Thank you Jin for sharing. I came upon your cycling videos only this year 2022 and loving it. Watching your videos really inspire me to plan another cycling trip again. In term of cycling speed, I prefer to cruise around 10-15 kmh just like you. I use a Soma Saga. Last trip was Round Island Taiwan in 2016.
You are passionate doing what you love. Keep moving. God bless.
Smashing vid, what incredible tenacity. I've bought those tools but I'll never use most of them. You are the genuine cyclist, I'm a weekend warrior at best. Please keep sharing your adventures. Xx
Wow! Wonderful. youre my hero. An inspiration. I ride my surly with tubeless tires and disc brakes from starbucks to starbucks in California.
I love this channel so much! Thank you thank you thank you for all the work you do!
Glad you enjoy it! :)
I do a fair bit of touring, and I thoroughly enjoyed this video. It's always interesting to see other cyclists' bikes and gear. Happy trails!
Glad you enjoyed it! It's always fun to stop when we, cycling traveler, meet each other on the road and talk about each other's bicycle setup :)
I really like your practical approach. Your equipment is proof that we don't need extremely expensive equipment for real cycling. I also ride (but on significantly shorter routes) an older bike (I think it was built in 1999 (Univega), basically the mtb, which I converted into a traveler, works great, similar equipment: 26 inch, Acera, Deore, Schwalbe Marathon (basic model)... Thank you for shaaring, I wish you many experiences on a bike!
A true test of bicycle products and gear from you. Super impressive bicycle journeys
Wow! I found this to be so inspirational! Thank you for your video!
Now that's a proper touring bike! Kudos to you and your travels. Her Surly, Get this person a new bike set up! What an ambassador she is, strongest reason I've had yet to take the plunge and get the LHT frameset. Albeit for shopping trips rather than global exploration. .
I use drop down with flared out ends. What I like is my leather wrap on my handle bars. Helps with sweaty hands and doesn't irritated my skin.
A real review by a real traveler, UA-cam needs more videos like this one , awesome
Memories with your bike "Priceless"😊
i Love 26 inch wheels , mostly for cheap mountain bike. That Yello bike will be in Surly Museum one day 💪🏽Strong Like Bull . Great Review
For world touring ,they are obsolete!
Yea the bike and the cyclist proof more than legit .. Good idea and surly.reward her with something !
Love your post!! I ride a Troll and my tours consist of paved (some barely) and gravel roads.
So much information based on years of experience. I saw 2 tools I had forgotten about & need to get immediately. Thanks Jin!
Glad it was helpful! :)
@@universewithme I need a spoke wrench, a puncture patch kit, and a few spokes. Then I'm ready to go.
Great smile!! Nice to see you again.
Thank you Jin for creating this video. I found it very useful and informative!
Gifted communicator! The Joy/Jin of Life on 26in wheels. 😀
Thank you for sharing! You're fantastic, Jin. 🎉🌻
Thank you for this thorough and detailed review! It’s very helpful.
Happy to see you again ☺
Thanks Dary :)
Great video. I have a Thorn exp myself. Never made it around the world but went from the UK to Azerbaijan. Would love to meet someone like you to talk about touring with, its rare that you meet people that do. Also, you can get a little brooks mud flap for your front mudguard, will stop loads of mud getting on your water bottle.
hey there great video. I live in Indonesia and I'm planning on buying a surly next month., Your video was really fun to watch.
Good video. Ten years of riding frequently, you surely know what works for you. As difficult as it is to find 26” wheels, I think they are still best for your purpose. They will never disappear completely.
Cool video, Congrats on riding the world. Incredible.
this is a special bike for touring, the equipment is amazing.
Great interview. Totally inspiring, and shows it's the rider who counts the most. Edit: Wow, I use the same phone bracket as you, GUB Plus 6, which enables keeping the phone in a study case.
Thank you for liking the video! Before that phone mount, I used some plastic and it was really bad!! But this one is so stable! :)
Great info for any new bike mechanics. I've owned maybe 70+ bikes never using a kick stand or removing them for weight and looks etc. Now as a 35 yr old, I too love my greenfield kickstand the same as a 5 yr old would😁
wow!! 70 bikes!! I don't think I will have a kickstand if I have a light road bike! haha. But this kickstand is just amazing for touring bike!
@@universewithme It's tricky owning a cool light bike (sometimes 5 or more bikes we all know the story!). I know what I need out of a single bike these day's as you do haha. One bike that does everything.
I have a Troll with disk brakes. Any suggestions for a kickstand? Thanks!
Great video of your bike after so many KM's. Maybe good to give you frame a good clean and look for any cracks. Using sand paper get rid of all the rust and repaint those parts. I would then spray oil into all the small frame holes( for welding) on the seats stays and chains stays. The same with the forks. This should help it from rusting on the inside. Also remove the seatpost and spray oil down there and grease so the seatpost does not corrode and fuse into the frame.
Hello Jin! Thank you for talking about the experience you've had with finding of 26" wheels around the world. I was thinking about taking a 26" bike on the world bike tour that I'm planning, but now I know that it's not such a great idea. Thank you also for being such a great inspiration for me. Best of luck on your future travels! Greetings from Guadalajara, Mexico!
Actually some said still it's easier than 27.5.. um.. it's confusing :) You can check your local bicycle store if they have 26" at the store and see how it goes. Good luck for your future trip :)
@@universewithme Yes, I see that several people mentioned that, but I think 700c would probably be easier to find than 650b (27.5) since they've been around longer. But I'll definitely do more research before deciding. Thank's again!
I prefer 26 over 700c still today
@@jorg3leon As long as you are staying on nicely paved roads, I would prefer a bit more tread for those rougher roads even though it will make the other 80% of riding slower without road tires.
I love your bike, it has so much history, and I love the yellow color. 26 inch forever !!!
Great bike info, Jin, thank you!
Fascinating. Your bike has such character … it’s a 🌟🥰👍
Yes that's right the bike itself speaks a lot
We used and continue to use the 26” wheel because of strength, slightly lower center of gravity, better tire selection, and ease of finding a mountain bike wheel replacement. Yes, I understand with the changes in time, 26” wheels are becoming more difficult to find in some parts of the world. Nice review, Thank you.
This is so interesting, I love a much used touring bike. There is always something not quite right with a touring bike without a scratch. As for the drop bar, i looks to me that a shallower type drop bar, maybe one with a wider splay would work much better.
I am such a big fan. I love your videos!
Yay! Thank you!
Whew I thought I was carrying a big tool bag but this is next level!
For the phone I use a Blackburn top tube bag with a transparent top. These mounts are not for me.
As others said, disc brakes are great -- I have blown a few rims in the past and that's not going to happen again.
Yell out when you're in the capital of New Zealand again!
Hi Jin! Thank you for your video. You shared a lot of useful practical experience with us. 26" wheel size: In my region in Central Europe, the 26 wheel is available, but these days it is increasingly difficult to buy the desired part immediately in the premium segment. I am also a fan of steel frames and 26 wheels. And I tried several schwalbe tires. If you allow me a piece of advice, rust protection is important for steel frames. Outside, the powder-coated paint is durable. The inside of the pipes can be treated (in Europe, Motip hollow wax). Ciao
Great video. Thanks for all the information
I use butterfly bars now and I actually think I prefer my old flat bars with extenders on the end. Butterflies flex too much for me and putting a handlebar bag on isn't always straightforward. The advantage of drops is that you can have friction change gear levers which I'm jealous of!
Great video!! Love your lifestyle.
Hello dear Jin, I have seen ur this blog n finally SUBSCRIBED the channel. We wish u a very very happy journeys. God bless u.
Nice, quiet hubs. 🙂 I run a deore front and a deore xt rear. Hardly makes a sound when I coast. Great for scaring people.
After living half of my life in Scandinavia I strongly recommend to plan your route through Norway. It's so magical here. Just not forget atleast 36 or even 40T cassette ;) Btw you don't need to change front chainrings, cassette and rear deraileur so often, if you check your chain for wear and change when it's worn out.
I have a 2007 Surly Long Haul Trucker that I was gifted by my employer. I have ridden for 37 years, more or less, and have owned about 12 nice bicycles, and a few crappy ones. The LHT is my favorite, by far, and that includes my Titanium Litespeed Gravel. The Litespeed is a thing of beauty, but to be honest, I ride the LHT more. Bulletproof, reliable, stable, versatile, easy to work on, and all-day-comfortable, Surly LHT's are world-class expedition bicycles. The LHT has been discontinued by Surly in favor of the Disc Trucker, which is similar and a good touring bike, but just not quite in the same class.
Mantaap..saya mengikuti semua video anda..perjuangan yang tangguh..penuh semangat..
I will record, save this info replay and so I could understand, learn. I am totally new to biking. I really admire you. I want to learn from you everything. I am your height. Our build is similar. This is very important factor when it comes choosing right size bike. Thank you Jin, please help me to find right bike and how to bike. I am a beginner. I just biked 12 miles flat rail road. From NY. Kim
I am glad this video is helpful!! That was a purpose of making this video. To be honest, I don't think an expensive bicycle is necessary. As I showed on the video, every part needs to be changed after a while for touring. To have 27 gears would be most important :) Enjoy riding! :)
Thank you for sharing about your bicycle, the Surly Long Haul Trucker. It is good to hear, as I have a Surly Long Haul Trucker. Sadly, Surly has stopped making the Long Haul Trucker.
Yes, maybe they have some reasons. Anyway as you can see, I still use it over 12 years on the world tour! Strongest one! (I didn't manage any rust and it's still good! 🤣)
Thank you jin welcome back very nice to see youtube video somewhere sunny ☀ Gold Coast the State of Queensland showing your very lucky bright yellow tour push the bike 🚲 good idea 💡 stay safe take care all the best of the year so sweet your so beautiful voice 😎👍💗💕💕🚲
Thank you ♥
Brook saddles are great...I'll give you a tip..rub a candle on the saddle now and again..it will help to keep it supple and waterproof.
Thanks for the tip!
I have flat bars with end extenders (antlers.) I prefer it to the butterfly and drop bars.
It's really easy to install flat bar shifters might be worth it or go with a fancy type of flatbar like Jones or surly brand.
Good vid kid.... I'm a fan of the twenty six wheel also.... need a couple tires now plus size..... nothing ever easy..... good
Useful info.... thanks and good luck.
Thanks 👍
Hay Jin, good to see another video. I just got 2 new bikes - not that fancy, but I think they're just good enough for me; a Galaxy Dawes Tourer deluxe and a Falcon Adventurer. (Both bikes cost under £300 GB - $412US). I'm just seeing how far I can go - am 60 now, but it's just a number. I like to follow people's adventures on bikes.
In my opinion, you don't need expensive bike to tour. Specially these days the bike industry is very well improved that they make better quality bike. Your bike will last longer except bike parts which you need to change to keep maintain :)
Surlys are just trading off their "trendy" name. A Dawes Galaxy is every bit as good as a Surly but without the extortionate price tag.
Great, I hope to cycle around Vietnam in the near future, I am preparing everything
Best of luck!
Great content as always, Jin. Learning a lot. I agree with the comments, brands should sponsor you. :)
It’s true for the 26”, in my local area I noticed that it’s easier to find compared to a 650b especially if the area is more remote. :)
Thank you for sharing your information. May I ask where is your local area??
@@universewithme I live in the Philippines and what I noticed in the rural areas the bike shops usually carries the 26” spares compared to 650b even those shops that are a bit outdated there’s a good chance that they have stocks. :)
damn when you think each mark on bike frame with it's own history ... thank you Jin for another video 👍 I've tried on one of my bike butterfly handlebars but with drop I found more options for body and they are narrower to pass traffic
Do you prefer drop?? Interesting point! Thank you for sharing! :)
yes I prefer vintage drop bars, they only 420mm wide, got 100mm stem up/down adjustment range , when you loading more lifting up when empty on lower position, also when cycling for steering using pedals and leaning your body weight from one to other side your bike , narrow bars is advantage in busy roads but not on gravel or sand
많이 들으셨겠지만 참 멋진분 같아요~!
유튜브를 통해 잘 보고 있답니다. 몸조심하시구요 항상 응원 합니다
응원 감사해요 ^^
Thanks for sharing your experience. Take care of your rust so you don’t get break accident.
Love you and your videos, I'm surprised you don't upgrade to a shimano XT derailleur. When I started touring i found it was worth while to have a high quality in the derailleur since it is moving so MUCH.
KEEP Rolling!!
Yeah that's good point :)
Sweet bike. I think you should upgrade your Rear derailleur and replace your rear cassette with an 11speed, then switch to a 2 chainring system. you will have only 22 gears but it should meet most of your needs and simplify your drivetrain.
Great video of you and your bicycle.
I also tour northeast America.
Thank you for sharing! You're amajing, Jin
항상 응원합니다 당신의 여행에 항상 신의 은총이 함께 하기를,,,
응원 감사합니다..^^
You are my hero. I have been following you as far I can remember you. When a movie about you, your life, your adventure?
Yeah, A movie or biography would be epic and probably a good seller too.
Aero bars are great too if you want to switch positions and be even faster. Not sure if that would work with a front bag though
대단하세요~! 늘 응원합니다..!
감사합니다~~^^
I think ortlieb should give you a new setup, cool video, your awesome 👌 I love my surly long haul trucker and it's ryde Andra css rim,48 spokes. the 26 is great very strong.
Amazing! Eager to learn from u. Subscribed!
Awesome, thank you!
You are great. ive views ya since the beginn. i tourd since a kid, 60's. missed the 76 usa tour butt done dozens of rides/tour. not enuff. often told to wait, etc. now may to old n pained to restart. i got bikes. gear old. just need the one. step thru for me. i gave dozen bikes away. only 6 left, but cant decide. may zig zag frum Marfa Tx, , west to Mesa Az and see sis in Hanover ,NH. before final ride back to the homes were i once was born...
I find it so interesting that 26" wheels have become less common. I toured Europe in 1999 and I taco'd my wheel in a small town in Denmark. The local bike shop didn't have any compatible wheels or rims for my bike with 700C wheels. As a tall guy, I'm kind of glad 700C has become more common now since larger wheels suit my big body.
Thank you very much. I learned a lot in your video.
Glad to hear that! :)
The 26” tire is scarce for selection here in Michigan. This size is available but very limited selection of choices at most stores. Most of the selection of 26” tires are entry level flimsy models or Mountain bike racing tires. Best selection for 26” is online stores in my area.
Because they are almost obsolete.
The Brooks saddle is the best. It will take some time before it fits well. You can buy aged ones but they will last a fewer time. Anyway if this one is worn out send me a message and I will help you get another one.
The route lines made me quadruple take as a longterm bike traveler myself. That is seriously impressive and I'm sure you don't need any external verification of that fact 😂 keep riding
I hope Suly bikes team up with you and give you a new bike… and take the old bike and recondition it back to its former glory. And allow you to film the process
I like my current bike which has memories :) I won't change this bike with even $10,000 bike! I like to keep my old stuff haha
Give her the new one and took the old bike to Surly museum!
06:41 someone actually wear thru the blue part of that marathon+ xD xD xD
As far as the 26" wheel problem.
It sounds like they just give you a answer that makes them sound good about themselves.
You are great! Matibay, Matatag, Mabuhay ka!
I'm from Maine in the United States Northeast part of the country and very good video did a really good job of that would like to see an extended version
Good luck on you be safe.
i would like to see her making bike restoration.. that would be soo much cool
dropbars and 26" wheels is a winning combination.
I like my 26" wheels because I'm a very small person. I personally find 27.5" and 29" too uncomfortable. I hope they keep making them! Tires are easier to find but I think I have to look out for rims soon.
I got marathon plus tour tyres great idea no punctures in last two years.
Normally the cassette and crankset will have a far longer life than the chain. but a worn down chain wears those components much quicker. it would be much better to change your chain more often (like 5000km or half a year), that way the other components would not wear neraly as much and you dont need to replace them every year. you can carry a "chain wear tool" to check how much the chain is worn and if it needs a replacements.
cassettes normaly life past at least 2-3 chains and the cranksets much more.
Great video, very interesting…! Your bike has taken some punishment! I’ve been reading about Pinion gears for touring - have you tried them or heard about how good they are? Looking forward to your next video! 👍👌
Oh.. I didn't know the name of Pinion, but I think I saw one time :) Thank you for supporting my channel =)
I really like your video! Thanks for making it. You inspire me to bicycle tour long distance...🚴♂️☀️. I recently sold my Surly Disc Trucker (26" wheels) and bought a Trek FX 2 fitness bike (700c wheels), which I'm converting to a 3x9 touring bike (using a Shimano T4060 48/36/26 crankset with a Shimano HG201 11-36 cassette, plus Shimano Sora flat bar shifters and Sora brake levers on 550mm-wide bullhorn-style vintage MTB handlebars, as well as a Shimano Sora 3x front derailleur and a Shimano Alivio M3100-SGS rear derailleur). Although I miss the vibration-absorbing quality of the Surly Disc Trucker's steel frame, I prefer the light & nimble weight of the Trek FX 2 aluminum frame, because I often have to lift my bike on and off the bike rack on the front of the local bus (I often commute multi-modally by bike and bus). I'm disappointed that 26" wheels are no longer popular and are harder to find, because there are/were so many choices of tire widths (26" x 25mm - 60mm+), and because a 26" wheel is easier to pedal uphill than a 700c or 29" wheel (fewer gear inches in the same gear). Anyhow, thanks again!
Thank you for sharing your bicycle setup :)
@@universewithme You're welcome! I'm deeply impressed by your worldwide bicycle touring and your interesting UA-cam videos which chronicle your travels. If you're ever in the northern New England area of the United States (I'm a resident of New Hampshire), I hope we get a chance to meet and perhaps ride a few miles together. You inspire me. Keep up the good work! {:-)
@@alexjboros9544 Thanks :)
That's a good point about 26inch wheels. As they are small you do get a really low gear on a 32 or 34 cassette we which is great for climbing with a heavy touring bike.
