I'm pleased to see so many people in the comments who are aware of Paul Evans sneaky price increases. Their shoes aren't bad but remember their whole ethos is that they are cheaper than the competition because they sell directly from their website. This was the case years ago when they were charging $350 for these cagneys. But now in 2017 they are 500+. At this price the are no longer cheaper than the competition. You're well into Crocket and Jones territory. At this price you can get white glove service and a glass of scotch in a brick and mortar store while you try on gyw shoes from 200 year old Northampton booteries. People call you sir and promise in house lifetime recrafting for this price. I think paul evans really need to re evaluate their pricing.
Disinf3ctant Hi there! I’m late to the party but I’m intrigued by your description... specially, I’d like to know which of these brick & mortar houses you’d recommend? Many thanks
not sure if you guys gives a shit but if you're bored like me during the covid times you can stream pretty much all the new movies and series on instaflixxer. Been binge watching with my girlfriend recently =)
@Azariah Eden Yup, been using instaflixxer for months myself :)
Respectfully, I think you have been misled. I'm pretty certain *all* leather shoes crease. These ones may not crease _as_ _much,_ but they still will eventually. Even bespoke shoes made by the likes of John Lobb and Gaziano & Girling, for example, will still show some creasing in the leather.
On a different note, have you heard of the brand *J.* *Fitzpatrick?* I'm curious as to what you would think of their shoes vs Paul Evans at some point.
kaikaichen Agreed. Justin Fitzpatrick aka the shoe snob is awesome and really knows his craft.
J. Fitzpatrick shoes' quality is far above Paul Evans shoes! I can absolutely guarantee this point. Construction wise - J.FItzpatrick ALWAYS uses Goodyear Welt which is one of the best for durability and comfort, Paul Evans uses Blake Stitch - not even Rapid Stitch, a way to save the cost but sacrifice comfort and durability for many "Italian made shoes."
The last of Paul Evans look all the same and sometimes very boxy, not as refined as sleek as J.Fitzpatrick - which he designs many different shapes and lasts.
Another point that was misled - Ferragamo and Gucci are not what they used to be anymore - the leather they are using is of much cheaper quality.
I feel like Paul Evans, To Boot New York, Ace Marks and many other "made in Italy designer's shoes" use the same factory, using the same machinery, same materials, same processes, just a blob of rebranding and marketing.
For such money that Paul Evans is asking, I'd rather (or many true shoe aficionados would also) go for Allen Edmonds, J.Fitzpatrick, Loake's, Cheaney...all the classic makers
Paul Evans is just another "New Yorker Designer" brand while J.Fitzpatrick is a brand that was developed from the love for men's shoes and style by the one and only - The Shoe Snob.
Scott's Corner of Fun and Exploration Check out my reviews!!!!!
dear Daniel, very good choice on your Fitzpatrick! ;)
I don't have as much against Paul Evans as I think the rest of you guys do - I can see why some (but not I) might prefer the flexibility, lower profile, and lighter weight of Blake vs. Goodyear. I'm sure they're well-made also. However, being a simpler method of construction, you'd think they wouldn't cost that much.
The main thing about PE that rubs me the wrong way is their stated value proposition, even as they've raised their prices by like 30%. At pretty much $500 a pair nowadays, I can't see how Paul Evans can call their shoes affordable in good conscience. If they mean to imply that with them you're getting a $1000 shoe for only $500, then I'm not buying it. (No pun intended).
A couple things to note, all from personal experience, as well as a lot of research. All leather creases to some extent and it isn't determined on leather quality but a number of factors. These include, the quality yes, but also the shoe construction, type of shoe (wholecuts tend to crease most of different types), the way the show fits each foot and how the person walks, how long the shoe was left on the last, and how they are taken care of and stored.
Beautiful. thought i've heard some opinions about PE being overpriced for their quality. Will be interested in your follow up video on this pair
PE is very overpriced!
Yeah only buy PE when they are on sale, like half price sale. You can find better shoes that are goodyear welted, full grain calf, wholecuts for half the price of these.
Like?
Check out Meermin Shoes!
ace marks are 100-200$ cheaper and quality is the same
Hey how are the shoes holding up after several months of wear? Do you still find yourself wearing them often?
When leather creases it's bookbinder leather. leather that is low quality with a acylic coating like nail polish used to cover up blemishes and cracks when worn.
Yes! Love over-the-calf socks!
Hi, You mentioned you normally wear size 12 but you bought a size 10 when they recommend you purchase just one size down. Was that an error? Shouldn't you have gotten a size 11? I normally 10.5 and just purchased two Paul Evans boots size 9.5. Mistake? Haven't gotten them yet.
How did the 9.5 size fit you? I'm also 10.5 about to order soon...
How was the Paul Evans fit when you got them 1 size down?
@@krypt1c330 they fit perfect. I was concerned about that too, but they got great. Remember, they are handmade and leather. So they are a little tight in the beginning. Just a little, but that’s normal. They form themselves to your feet for that custom fit after about three wears.
Allen Edmonds > GUCCI
Are these Marrone or Chocolate? How would you compare to Allen Edmonds? I’ve bought many items from your videos. Keep up the great content!
When he says order a size down, is that for that Cagney cap-toe style or for the brand in general?
That’s what I’m saying. I just bought a 9 1/2 pair now I’m thinking should I have bought an 8 1/2??!!
Have you ever tried Eremia Shoes, Milan Salvatore or Zerka shoes?
after 3year, can review again ?worth to buy?
hi!Did you make a video on how these held up?Please share your thoughts. Thanks
Good video.. which color is this btw ?
What are your thoughts on driving shoes....? Todd's? Or even the seasonal Ferragamo ?
I'm just curious? I'm a fan of the suede Todd's but the nubs of the sole I find seriously disconcerting. Totally, nails on a chalkboard! But again ..... I love the look & feel of the drivers. Would you say that you're a fan of the lug sole that GUCCI does for their loafers in the winter?
I love the idea of driving shoes but don't have any in my rotation right now. Next major category I am looking forward to getting into.
The Kavalier that would be brilliant! I can't wait to hear or see your interpretation of the perfect driver...
Appreciate your response.
2:01 You’re going to get creases regardless of the quality of the leather. It’s inevitable.
Loving these videos man-just discovered you yesterday.
Thank you and welcome! Let me know companies you are looking for reviews but cannot find.
Cheers
Thanks man-I am not so much into the suits-though I wear them plenty for work. Like you I am a really tall guy and I work out a lot so I like clothes that show off the hard work I put in-and I love shoes. You inspired me to order a pair of shirt garters now.
I would like to see a video that shows a before and after taking a shoe to get resoled a cobbler. A lot of people seem to be a bit on the fence on bringing their expensive shoes to a cobbler.
What are your thoughts on paul parkmans
What color are those?
So if I'm size 9.5 in sneakers I should order these Paul Evans in 8.5?
Yes sounds like that will be good. Also double check a standard dress shoe size.
@@The_Kavalier yes you were right my shoes just came in today the perfect size ordered and man they are gorgeous!!.. I am super glad to have watched your video. Thanks for the reply
They are Blake Welted. Goodyear Welted, as in Allen Edmonds, are higher quality. They look very fashion forward, but Black construction is not as good as a Goodyear.
Why do you say that? If you're considering a working boot than a good year welt will be more waterproof. But these are dress shoes and I imagine aesthetics would be a bigger concern. The Blake stitch is less visible, so why is the good year better, in your opinion?
Rob Saunderson cause they're a pain in the ass to resole. The upper is held in shape by the sole which is all stitched in the middle. The shoes literally falls apart when you take the sole off so cobblers charge a healthy amount more to work on them. The reason we shy away from cemented shoes is because we want to save money by resoling later instead of buying a new shoe right?
I have to disagree. It's not only about construction and durability. I have size 12 shoe US size and I'm not very tall, due to the nature of the size of the welt pouring over the size of the shoe, it makes my feet look like a clowns unless I only where black. Blake construction is great because it's streamlined and sleek. To each there own but I find it more aesthetic. I use an iPhone SE so I'm all about the form factor.
With Allen Edmonds, you can typically get them on sale for 100-200 cheaper then their listed price. For 500$ you're approaching Alden prices. Definitely don't see myself going for the PEs...
I would love to see you do a review on either a pair of Scarpe di Bianco, Church's, or Crockett & Jones. But, as those are higher end shoes with the price tag to match they may not be something for you. If anything I'm just fascinated right now to be discovering higher end shoe brands with better construction and learning all the shoe/cobblering terminology.
Great videos man. Quick question - Is this the Cagney or Cagney II?
Cagney
Love your videos! Is this the Havana brown color?
i love this paul even shoes , ill buy it soon
Can you do an update on this shoe? I've been curious about Paul Evans for awhile now
Yes
The Kavalier Thank you!
I know you wear laced shoes for business and loafers for casual, have you done business casual loafers review?
Have you reviewed any Hugo Boss shoes?
Please review oxford/double monk strap shoes from Suitsupply. They seem to look nice!
When can we hope to see a wear in update video?
You could get Allen Edmonds shoes during their numerous annual sales for
John, check out Ace Marks. They have been changing the game, I hear, in the luxury handcrafted shoe arena. I have several of their shoes from their first Kickstarter campaign, and they are really beautiful, similarly constructed as Paul Evans, similar lasts (meaning very sleek looking) and very wearable right from the first wear (lightweight). All in all, they offer very similar value to Paul Evans in terms of construction and leather, if not better, and in an even more competitive price bracket. Definitely worth a shot, perhaps more. Thanks for the review!
Nice shoes. Are they goodwear Welted?
Blake Stitch
good luck sending them back and forth
I appreciate the Fall Out Boy outro!
+The Kavalier, which color are these oxfords: Havana Brown or Marrone?
A. Zov Maroone.. same as mine👍
Leather shoes will crease no matter what brand they are from. It’s just that quality shoes crease in a different way than cheap ones most of the times.
Why do common projects Achilles Lows get creases even though they have high quality leather?
All shoes crease, I should have been more specific in the type of creasing that occurs in mid-quality leathers
I'll DEFFINATLY buy it
I've heard from a multitude of places that Paul Evans shoes are not good quality and are very over priced for what you're getting. Many people have said they have quality of a high $200 shoe so Paul Evans is a questionable brand.
Have you reviewed Allen Edmonds?
Yeah only buy PE when they are on sale, like half price sale. You can find better shoes that are goodyear welted, full grain calf, wholecuts for half the price of these. Meermin, and Herring both come to mind and those are wholecuts. You can get cap toes for way less that are just as good or better. Hell you can get custom Patina done for less at Septieme.
It it's tight then if at all possible send it back and get the next half size up. You might regret it every time you wear them. I wish I had.
Why wouldn't you consider Ferragamos?
All leather creases, end of its always going to even with trees, and top quality cream and care. A quality shoe is leather and Goodyear welted. I’m from Northampton England we know all about the 👞
Can you do an oliver sweeney or ace marks shoe?
+gofdoom10 ace marks will be coming have been recommended many times
Although not a shoe brand/company I would recommend you take a look at Sid Mashburn I find them to be a very aesthetically appealing RTW menswear company and they just recently started a MTM shirt program, definitely worth a look in my opinion and hopefully a review eventually.
Thanks as always for another great video and initial review.
Update on my previous comment; it appears they've now added a shoe line alongside their RTW and accessories collections, which as with the rest of their stuff, I'm sure is worth taking a look at (in my opinion). Hopefully you can take the time to review them in the not too distant future Jon.
Thanks again for the great video and channel in general.
At last, proper lengthed trousers.
great video man!
PE has upped their price, they have a pair of monks going for $500. A year ago they were $395, that's when I got a pair. At $500+ I won't be looking at PE.
PE are made in Naples and I'll be going their next year on my honeymoon!!! $500 seems a bit pricey. Perhaps if i see them in the flesh or get a better price, I'll change my tune. Maybe both!
check out cobbler union shoes, good year welted premium leather, channel stitching. A great buy for the money they run about 395 and you get much better value.
omg! so beautiful!
You need to do a review of the Opinel you us in this video.
Knife collection video good idea!
i think you should check out ace marks, nearly half the price, same construction (blake stitch) and a good sense of style, to me paul evans is just overpriced
Finally!
All types of leather crease. except for suede.
Quality of leather has almost nothing to do with creasing, the cut, fitment, construction, leather after care all are way more important then the quality of leather. quality of leather is for durability and in many cases looks
I like Meermins really great shoe I bought some Shell Cordavan shoes. Best shoes I've every owned.
+Panagiotis Skartsilas I was just talking to a friend about Meermins might have to get some
The Kavalier Go for the Linea line they are hand grade with better leather and a full leather heel. The MTOs are awesome too. That's where I got the shells from. Calf is easier to care for. When I'll put up a video they are not any on UA-cam.
Meermin all day for me. Best bang for your buck
The worst god damn company I’ve ever dealt with in my life. I’ve had the same experience that others have mentioned. Ordered a pair of shoes which took 3 months to arrive, which did not fit. When I asked about exchanging them, I was told that the next size up was not in stock and so I’d have to wait ANOTHER 3 months to get a shoe that was a half size larger. I eventually returned these shoes to get a refund but was told they were “worn” and my money could not be refunded...I wore them one time on my carpet (per their instructions) and yet this apparently has put them into condition damaged beyond the point of return. I’m so furious with this garbage company. It’s been almost a year, I’m out $300, and I STILL don’t have a pair of shoes!!!!
PE shoes are way overpriced considering the idea that they sell directly to customers. Go for Allen Edmonds instead for additional $20-50.
High end shoes don't crease, what kinda BS is that?I wear John Lobb shoes and guess what...They crease as well!!I would never pay anywhere near the retail price for Paul Evans. Why?Because they are lying to the costumers that their shoes are Handmade which are clearly not!!There was some hand painting envolved in the process but that does not make a shoe a Handmade shoe...And I don't like marketing tactics of them also. When they came out a couple years ago their shoes cost around $200 and two years later they cost over $500!!500 bucks for Blake shoes?!?Hell no!!.They are insane with their prices which are in the price range of Crocket&Jones which IMO is light years ahead of Paul Evans!!!Just my two cents.
I would've gone with some established European brands such as Carmina, or J Fitzpatrick as others have mentioned, if I were to drop $500 on a pair of dress hoes. I consider Paul Evans overpriced and some of their aggressive patina really over the top. On the other hand, I don't believe Ace Marks is worth the trouble to check out. Just a brand circlejerked around by a bunch of paid-for UA-camrs and their styling of mixing suede and leather is just tacky and awful. Also established companies funding products on kickstarter (ie Ace Marks) is a pretty shitty thing to do.
+kongmw so I need to pick up some ace marks just to benchmark them against brands that are better value maybe. They definitelt have name recognition
The Kavalier Please do the comparison soon! Would love to see the results of Acemarks vs the rest.
Luxury? Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure they’re nice shoes, but when I think about luxury shoes, I picture George Cleverley, Corthay, Stefano Bemer, or Edward Green, not Paul Evans.
Beauty.....U can wear without socks it will look more gorgeous...
Honestly, you need a table to review this items; specially when you are opening the box with the knife in the air. Doesn't feel comfortable to see.
+Luis Tomás Velez yes a nice dark walnut table with a jib I can use for product shots. Need to fire up my drill and saw...
PE are sneaky guys.
My suggestion to the Kavalier is to stop promoting Paul Evans through this video for the sake of maintaining your own credibility. The general consensus among buyers is that Paul Evans is a terrible company, shoes are overpriced and customer service is awful.
On purpose they delayed my refund on the returned shoes, did not reply to my initial email inquiry regarding refunds. It seems they want to hold on to your money as long as they could as it gives them working capital, shady practice. They did not have the courtesy to acknowledge delay in processing refund. I had to dispute the transaction with bank, after that I received an email from Paul Evans customer service full of abusive language directed toward me.
What kind of business abuses customers on the email!
Paul Evans is way way over priced for what they produce !!! Truth !!! Allen Edmonds actually make a better shoe , If you don’t like them from my personal experience.... please buy Carmina shoes you will definitely !!! Not be disappointed at all
Carmina > Paul Evans
DON'T BUY THIS BRAND! They sent out a bunch of shoes to reviewers for free (or even payed them, idk) to get good reviews. Absolutely low quality shoes, you can get way better made shoes for less than half of the price.
