This is the same way that sneakerheads talk about Jordans. lol. I love seeing somebody speak about something they're passionate about. Really cool video. IMO the Gaziano and Girlings are the LVL 99 of these 4 pairs. Top Notch

ShaySlay. This is what you don't get about classical men's wear. Men interested in classical men's wear do not wear it to impress others. When we do it's mainly for special occasions or work. We don't care if someone else knows the details or not because they matter to ourselves. Now don't get me wrong I love street wear and I'm a Nike dunk fanatic and would be willing to pay over $3,000 for a pair, but the average joe doesn't care and that's fine because they are special to me. I like Rolex, but not to impress other people , that's why I wear the most simple Rolex. All in all we don't dress to impress other people this is our hobby and we love the details.
Thank you for the tutorial. Your knowledge about the shoes and quality differences is great. I like that you are able to communicate the appreciation of the finer details of the higher end shoes without invoking any snobbery. Very well done!
Never ever buy shoes from Zara, they literally buy it from my neighbours shoe manufacturing plant at Agra, India at an average of $7 a pair, they're poorly made.
GoldHunter do you own a cell phone that costs $400 plus? If yes you will probably throw it away after a few years. Now imagine being on your feet all day in something as comfortable as these shoes and being able to repair them to make them last for a couple decades. Seems worth it right? If you have Nordstrom Rack near you you can get Allen Edmonds at great discounts. If you want a more rugged boot for casual wear then look for red wing iron ranger or wolverine 1000 mile.

What an absolutely perfect video. I really appreciated the way you explained each shoe and how they differ from the others. I think many of your followers will use this as a starting point when they are deciding which shoe to purchase. I know I learned a great deal from it. I have several Allen Edmunds and now Cleverleys and can appreciate the difference. Well done Kirby.
I bought Allen Edmond couple years ago thinking it was crazy to spend $400 on a pair of shoes but decided it was worth it because they can be resoled and are the best. Then I watch this and now I'm depressed. Reminds me of what I always tell people. You have no clue what rich is.
Some people buy new iPhones every year (~$700) even though they aren't rich whereas a pair of good shoes can cost as much but last you decades. It's not that crazy if you think about it this way.
For a regular Joe S’moe doing research on men’s wear, including shoes, this was very educational and exactly what I was looking for when it comes knowing about differences in quality at the higher end. Thank you.
Mr Allison I really enjoyed your journey you have taken us on, exploring the advantages of the range of Oxfords in this video from different makers. Your generosity in description is greatly appreciated going from entry level to the almost bespoke shoe, which is a dream of mine. In my twenties I had a hand crafted pair of patented leather black boots made for me by a quiet shoe maker in Melbourne Australia in the early '80's for stage work. I still have them. Thank you.
@@kirbyallison Gaziano & Girling on par with Edward Green. The most comfortable pair straight out of the box was Carmina and surprisingly their Rain last has been the best fitting RTW shoe I've experienced so far. I don't wear my Allen Edmonds anymore but they were great comfortable shoes to start my career in banking.
Carmina shoes are amazing. Most shoe reviewers recommend them if you have "mid-level" budget for a dress shoes. Their Cordovans are virtually indestructible through normal wear and tear.
I learn so much from all your videos, yet this video highlights the subtle and sometimes not so subtle differences between $400 shoes and $1300 shoes. Little did I know how different these shoes are made/constructed and how each shoe adds value in its respective price point. Very informative and useful video for anyone learning about the nuances of the shoe manufacturing business. Great video!
The first time I put on a pair of Santoni rubber sole not leather sole cap toe shoes I was hooked. They felt like slippers compared to Alan Edmunds. I've never had a pair resoled I usually just buy a new pair but the ones I love have all changed.
It's always interesting to see how different price points effect the quality of some things or if you're really just paying more for a brand name. Great review.
This is a great video. I too, have graduated from entry level great shoemaking to high-end mens RTW and MTO shoes. You explain the differences very well, as I have had to numerous times to my wife, family members, and friends why I seek higher grade shoes, and why it matters. In the fashion industry where the markup can be as high as 400% simply by adding a name brand to an item, men's shoes are more often priced according to style, craftsmanship, and quality of materials used to make the shoes. The details matter to shoe connoisseurs, and it's one of the first things that we notice.
Kirby Allison I am into Vass right now (9 pair, 1 more MTO on the way). I really like the look of the F,U, and K last, and the weight of the handmade craftsmanship feels like I have something special on my feet. I have many brands in my closet (Carmina, EG, Ferragamo Tramezza, and many more, but Vass are my current favorite.
You've ruined every other box store dress shoe for me. However, I mean this in a good way. I've learned a lot and will probably not look at any dress shoe the same again and I thank you for that.
I wear the Allen Edmonds daily. The Carmina's I wear for Board meetings and the Edward Green's on special occasions. All three brands have been excellent and highly recommend them in terms craftsmanship, quality, comfort and applicability.
That makes perfect sense. I don't have any board meetings, and any special occasions for me, I'll wear my nicer pair of AEs. My regular AEs any other time I'm not wearing Red WIng or Alden boots. If I had board meetings to attend, rest assured I would have a pair of Carminas, or similar quality.
Yep I got my first two pairs of ae strands in college for $40 and $50 respectively. As far as new goes you can get factory seconds or clearance sales. Dont have to be living in a world of abundance to own a pair of durable dress shoes
Kirby, this is the video I've always wanted to see--someone walking through different price points of shoes to really explain what you pay for at each level. This is what I desperately needed when first buying quality shoes to know how to differentiate options, and tell where one is getting appropriate quality for money, and where one might be paying only for the brand. Bravo on this video! I'd love to see a follow-up where you look at some other brands (e.g. Crockett & Jones) and maybe even some of your bespoke black cap toes. As someone who regularly wears both Allen Edmonds and bespoke George Cleverleys, I wholehearted agree with you about not being moralistic about different levels of shoes. I actually think a pair of my Allen Edmonds are my most beautiful shoes--they've developed a lovely patina over the years, with frequent wear and periodic quick polishings (not even putting the time in to do fancy mirror polishes). I get more joy wearing them than my bespoke Cleverleys despite the Cleverleys (which I do love) obviously having a much better fit and the better finishing (though, only I and no one else will notice that, unlike the patina on my Allen Edmonds). I think this reinforces the ethos of your channel and business: taking care of your wardrobe can make it more valuable and beautiful, as long as you are starting with something at a minimal level of quality.
I have worn Allen Edmonds for 35 years and have found them to be the best shoe for me. All my dress and casual shoes are the same brand and size. No doubt there are better shoes but the price prohibits me. I am satisfied with my Allen Edmonds. And yes, I still have and wear my first pair 35 years later due to proper care and recrafting. And, trees in every pair I own. I spend less on suits in order to have better shoes. Great video. Thank you.
He was an investment banker. Lol. I wonder how him and other men interested in classical men's wear deal with the hate though. I find it hard at times having to justify the price of my shoes to someone's complaint about it and telling them "but you literally asked the price of my shoes, why does it matter that I spent 2k it's my money" . It's hard in this hobby unless you work at I bank (I plan to)
@@IcejjfishTbone Good dress shoes are an investment. There are plenty of worse things you can blow 2k on. It's silly to complain about what people spend their money on. I don't get why some women spend all this money at the nail salon. I can paint my nails just fine myself. But if they like their fancy nails, good on them. It's their money.

In the day of inexpensive clothing being the rule, this information makes you understand what good clothing is really all about. Nothing snobbish or condescending here, just clear information that explains why high quality shoes are, well, high quality. Personally, I've found life is too short for uncomfortable shoes, and money spent on good shoes has never been a waste for me.
It's kind of amazing how much further $100 takes you. Then again, the AEs may end up still being the best value, since they have the characteristics of street shoes and are likely to be worn a greater number of times than the others would be.

Enjoy your shoes as you most likely did before. And the term trashy wasn‘t used, but you know that. I would have gone for Allen Edmunds, when I looked for a pair of elegant shoes. But Allen Edmunds weren’t available in size 13. I didn‘t choose any of the portrayed brands, but went for Ludwig Reiter, which is based in Vienna, Austria.
I’ve got a pair of J&M Georgetown Black Cap Toe oxfords, from back when they still had some production in the states. I worked for them right out of college and they used to have insane employee deals during the holidays. I got them for $75. They’re a hell of a $75 shoe if I do say so myself!
Kirby, I’m surprised you didn’t mention the way higher end shoemakers cut the upper to accommodate the ankle , and tend to have an asymmetric top line.. I love that about them and it sets them apart.
Very informative video. Of note is that at 18:17 the pencil he pulls out of his pocket is a Palomino Blackwing 602, probably the finest pencil made. Class act.
For me the 3rd is the best. Beautiful belly, and goes accross the foot without being bespoke. But i feel like the cap toe itself, is way more beautiful on the second.
Honestly, the GG look the worst for me. One of the most important aspects of shoe construction, the stand of the heel, is, unfortunately, totally misconstructed.
I stumbled across this video and watched the whole thing. I really liked how the Mr. Allison paid each shoe respect. So well done I'm going to check out Kirby Allison's site. Thank you for this video.
Great video. I do think the AE shoes are a strong everyday shoe. The others, particularly the last two are so expensive I would be worried about wearing them regularly.
@Darth_Darling Don't shy away from looking at men's oxfords. As long as they fit well and are a suitable style; the gender is irrelevant. I just got a pair of Allen Edmonds Park Avenue on Ebay. It doesn't matter that they are men's shoes. Heck, it works out in my favor. I have big feet. Women's size 12 aren't the easiest to find. But a men's 10 is a standard size. I've never owned more than 2 pair of shoes at a time in my life; often, as a kid, I didn't own any at all. Now I find myself looking at 500 to 1300 dollar shoes - and actually considering buying them.
@dalepres1 your last sentence, me too....
I’m a huge fan of Carmina. I bought them back in the day when I didn’t have a clue about quality. And after some time I started appreciate them much more
For the money, Carmina's look to be my favorite of all those.
I’m a shoe and western boots lover. I have about 50 to 60 pairs of boots and shoes but my knowledge about craftsmanship have gone to the top with your wonderful video.👍👍
How many of those 50-60 pairs Thursday or RedWing?
Yesterday my lawyer wore Allen Edmonds to court. Today I have a new lawyer...

What a peasant.

i wouldn't be so picky. sounds like you can't afford a good lawyer.
I own two pairs of Converse and a pair of Bates, clearly not into shoes; but this guy has me wanting to buy a pair of Carminas tomorrow.
SolarAbyss The ‘Jumper’ Boots, especially. One day eh
@@adlanhaziq I actually looked up Carmina stores but the closest is in Salt Lake City. Really surprised they don't have one in Chicago or Austin.
All these shoes are great, but when you get down to it, you really do NOT need anything better than Allen Edmonds. Pick them up all day on sale, or clearance for around $250, Probably have a look at Dainite soles also.
Clarks build a beautiful shoe well made and long lasting plus they dont cost 12.00.0 no shoes worth that plus i suspect the shoes will cut into you like a razor

I'm about to hit 30 and just starting my wardrobe all over again. I can't thank you enough for all this concise information :) much appreciated
I'm in the same position, turning 30 in October. I have been watching this channel, the Gentleman's Gazette, The Elegant Oxford and others for inspiration and knowledge. I think it's a shame that grown men dress so horribly in this day and age... we need to keep the bar up :) cheers

I have a feeling you will be much more than that in the future.

I loved the pencil too. Nurses notice everything....
Thanks for introducing me to Carmina. Such a huge improvement for a minimal price increase.
I got tired of Allen Edmonds quality control issues and needed something better.
Thanks Kirby!
Carmina seems to be the best value 🔥🔥
This is the same way that sneakerheads talk about Jordans. lol. I love seeing somebody speak about something they're passionate about. Really cool video. IMO the Gaziano and Girlings are the LVL 99 of these 4 pairs. Top Notch
akhenatuh those $1300 shoes probably only cost like 350 or 400 to make, thats just how stuff works of course a $130 shoe is going to cost $20 to make
Keep in mind. The passion is not for fashion. Its for an elitist "have and have not society" that he wants to reinforce. He hates fashion and has said so himself. Just be clear what you are watching here. He would regurgitate at the thought of being associated with "street people" and their low brow clothes.
@@gregorythomas2674 yeah you can tell that by his intro "the well dressed" i was like wtf? Lol. Normal people cant tell the difference between a $400 plain black dress shoe and a $1300 plain black dress shoe unless one is more shiny or dirty/beat up.
Id rather pay the $1300 for a jordan or yeezy/sneaker. At least they look different for the money instead of plain black.
scu mm. That's the price of the materials crafting them in that way is a different story
Very well done!
idk why the hell im watching this. but this guy had me hooked with his presentation.
Don't Be Stupid
It’s because he’s wearing good shoes.

Suddenly I’m not feeling so great about my crocks! :/

why am I watching this. I can barely afford a 40 dollar Zara shoe
Never ever buy shoes from Zara, they literally buy it from my neighbours shoe manufacturing plant at Agra, India at an average of $7 a pair, they're poorly made.
Goals. You will own a pair of Carminas
#DrunkLife right here.
Point taken. But if it is entertaining, then watching this video was surely worth it.
Bravo! A masterful presentation. The poise, the polish, the professionalism-it was an absolute pleasure to behold. Thank you, Mr. Allison.
Well, none of these fasten with velcro, so im out.
They should make a fine leather monkstrap shoe where the buckle under the strap attaches by velcro. It'd be a little inside joke...
One thing I know--that I was once blind and that now I can see; thank you Kirby Allison.
Wtf
"I had 4 pairs of Allen Edmonds in college" !!! That summarizes Kirby's passion pretty well :)
Kirby - This is one of your best videos. You are getting incredibly comfortable and fluent in front of the camera.
"it's huge you know, i could fit two fingers in there" yep that is a sentence not to take out of its context
You also have to pay an extra $1000 to get do it.
Wow. Those Gaziano & Girling have the most beautiful soles I have ever seen on a shoe
Me before this video: "These $40 Target dress shoes are pretty comfy"
Me after this video: "Guess I'm buying some Carminas."

I learned a great deal from this video, and there is nothing like seeing the nuances of fine craftsmanship
I was unaware of shoes being so expensive glad i found this video. Now I know what I can ask for Christmas 🎄
I bought Allen Edmond couple years ago thinking it was crazy to spend $400 on a pair of shoes but decided it was worth it because they can be resoled and are the best. Then I watch this and now I'm depressed. Reminds me of what I always tell people. You have no clue what rich is.
AE are great.
i mean they are fine shoes, but you could have got those same shoes for half the price.
No Allen Edmonds are great, the reasons he like the others are kind of silly, who will know a stitch density, and invisible underneath.
Some people buy new iPhones every year (~$700) even though they aren't rich whereas a pair of good shoes can cost as much but last you decades. It's not that crazy if you think about it this way.
@jack black yeah, but I can’t check my Facebook feed with my shoe. ;). Priorities and all that.
Thank you.
As owner of each pair of shoes that is described by Kirby, this review is spot on! Excellent content as always. Thank you Kirby!
Thank's, Pawel! Based on your extended wear, which has stood the best test of time?
@@kirbyallison Gaziano & Girling on par with Edward Green. The most comfortable pair straight out of the box was Carmina and surprisingly their Rain last has been the best fitting RTW shoe I've experienced so far. I don't wear my Allen Edmonds anymore but they were great comfortable shoes to start my career in banking.
Before: What? We're too hoity toity for Florsheims and Eccos?
After: Alright, I need to get me some of them Carminas
Carmina shoes are amazing. Most shoe reviewers recommend them if you have "mid-level" budget for a dress shoes. Their Cordovans are virtually indestructible through normal wear and tear.
20:36 "if all you have is 390 dollars"!!! I wish i had that much to spend on a single pair of shoes. Rocking £40 clarks haha
Ebay is your friend. You can get Allen Edmonds for less than 100 dollars in the US on Ebay. So go poke around Ebay and see what you can find.
There is so much science to a good shoes. Thanks for making this easy to understand.
Francis Choo Really more of an art than anything.
There is science for almost everything, the strength behind it, must be to explain it in a simple way.
Cedric Carroll What are your current brands of choice?
Female fashion a totally different beast. Buying habits totally different.
Kirby, great work here. Can’t help but wonder what you’re wearing right now.

@@SK-te4sd I've never purchased a pair of Crockett & Jones. They have been highly recommended by a few colleagues.

Fantastic education, delivered with knowledge, enthusiasm and with zero snobbery.
May i sugest a clarks shoe great shoes well made realy good
It's amazing to see that even at the higher level, there's still an incredible amount of practicality to all of the designs.
Thank you.
Love seeing these differences. Have been a fan of Carmina and Edward Green for a while but really love John Lobb. Great video
I bought Allen Edmonds because of this video ! Thank you!
Wonder if any of his friends call him “Kirbs” or “K-dawg”?

Very informative video - really enjoyed it thanks.
Though gotta say, it's a sign of who's got wealth that not once did he mention comfort, everything was just about finish lol!
si E At this level, comfort is more an issue of fit than anything else. And that so particular to the wearer and the shoe.
That swan neck tho, OMG!!! game changer.
@minute 24:54 he said (“BLACK COCK TOE ASS FORD) LOL
It's kind of amazing how much further $100 takes you. Then again, the AEs may end up still being the best value, since they have the characteristics of street shoes and are likely to be worn a greater number of times than the others would be.
You know, this actually seems insane to me that someone would spend more money on something they're going to use less often.

Class act.
One more thing you seem to overlook is their relative comfort.
Are those EG’s comfortable to come wear all day or just a few hours at an evening gala?
Assuming you have the right size/width, then yes they are absolutely comfortable to wear all day.
Go bespoke for maximum comfort. Merely an extra grand.
For me the 3rd is the best. Beautiful belly, and goes accross the foot without being bespoke. But i feel like the cap toe itself, is way more beautiful on the second.
This is a great review. I personally appreciate the details and passion making this video.
Carminas are good value, the GG look the best for me, thanks for the video Kirby

I guess that if one has the funds to buy these shoes, that's of little consequence.
Dang, I’ve been rocking $60 Clark’s my whole life....
So don't worry so much about the gender of clothes and shoes.
