I have on my ghost grappler microshift sword shifters 2×10, front derailleur grx 400, rear derailleur Shimano RD M9100 XTR 11/12speed with 10 speed cassette 11-48 and it working very good.
Great video, Russ! To add to the GRX 810 RD being Shiminano' finest for the 2x11 system (40 tooth stated capacity), for anyone with running 2x10 or on more of a budget --- RD-RX400 is also great and has a 41 tooth stated capacity, which in reality is 47 t easily. I'm running a 46/30 x 11-42 10 speed with no issues.
A while ago, you mentioned the Shimano Acera M3020-8 derailleur, I bought one and the CS-HG400-8 11-40T cassette, with my old 48-38-28 crankset I now have a bike with 623% gear range! I am currently using the original trigger shifters, but this should also work with Shimano 8 speed dropbar brifters. You should try it!
I've used that one some old 2x and 3x bikes that I was replacing the worm out cassette with a larger range one. Really good range. And derailleur. It does not have the clutch that the grx, sword or cues derailleurs have.
I bought 1 of those derailleurs too after Russ reviewed it. I have it set up with 44-26 chainrings and an old 5 speed wide range freewheel 14-38t. Friction shifting and it works great.
You emphasize that the grx810 is the "benchmark rear derailleur for running wide range doubles." What is the difference between the grx810 and the grx400? From the specs, the 400 has a slightly larger capacity and has a stated max of 36t vs the state 34t for the 810. Why do you prefer the 810 over the 400? What is different? Thanks!!
I’ve been thinking about this more and the obvious difference is 11sp for the 810. Duh. I have a 10speed drivetrain and am trying to figure out which rear mech to upgrade to (grx 400 vs 810). Im currently running tiagra 4700
For friction shifting with a CUES rear derailleur, I had good results with a JTEK 6 Shiftmate. The CUES rear derailleur is something like 1.05 so that shiftmate works well with friction shifters that can pull 10 or 11spd ~ 1.4ish
No, it’s mounted correctly. The GRX has a “shadow link” or shimano’s extra derailleur hanger, the cues mounts directly to the hanger without the extra link
I have a similar combo AdventX 1by shifters, 4100 Deore 10 speed cassette, Shimano 5100 rd and ZTTO 10 speed chain, 42 tooth chainring. And... in general, the work is good, but not too great. The main problems are dropping the chain on the three largest sprockets, as well as choosing the chain length for this combination. I had to put a slightly longer chain and instead of the lower pulley with 13 teeth, a pulley with 14 teeth to compensate for the slack of the chain, but be able to unscrew the b-screw as much as possible. And with this combination, everything worked quite well, only the release of the chain from the largest chain sprocket was slightly slower, but not critical. There is no overdrop, as there was with a shorter chain.
Must admid, that the microshift front and rear derailleur look pretty similiar to the 11speed shimano grx/cues etc derailleurs, so they probably copied a lot, which is why they work so well together. Quite nice to see more brands being compatible with shimano stuff, although shimano isn't that expensive anymore if your buying used gear!
The cog spacing is different between HG and CUES. This combo of Sword + CUES would most likely not work with a 10 speed CUES (Linkglide) cassette, because those have the same (narrower) cog spacing as 11 speed CUES except with one fewer cog.
I'm using MIcroshift brifters R8 with Shimano Claris rear Derailour on my 2002 Cannondale F3000SL CAAD5 based gravel bike. It's 1x 8 setup with Sunrace 11-40 cassete, 40T NW front chainring, KMC 9 speed chain (yes, on old setups thinner chain shifts better - like 10 sp. chain on 9 sp. cassete , etc.). And the left brifter's shifter actuator is used to actuate my Tmars 27,2mm dropper seatpost. It rides like a dream. TRP HYRd brakes helps to.
To me the real magic is going to be getting that LinkGlide cassette working. I don't see this CUES rear derailleur working with drop bar being so groundbreaking. We already have a plethora of similar RDs, but so far I'm not aware of anyone being able to shift the LG cassette with drop bars. Having that LG durability for a commuter bike would be a game changer
Yes. I am putting an LG 11 speed on my commuter as well. And unable to find a road shifter that is compatible for me to do the drop bar conversion. The bike has hydraulic discs, it feels weird to have a road hydraulic brake lever but not using it to shift.
As I'm sure we've all experienced, shifting and shifting well and reliably are two different things. I've often had derailleurs shift reasonably well on the stand and then jump and skip gears when you ride under load. It will be interesting to see what Russ finds in his road testing. Personally I wouldn't want to ride and rely on this kind of kludgy setup.
IIRC Dynasis is 1.16:1(ish) ratio, that claimed 1.13 for cues is pretty (suspiciously?) similar. Close enough to make most Shimano MTB mechs (which I'm sure lots of us have in a spares box) combined with a sword lever a viable option, certainly for 1x10 drop-bar setups...

"Russ, have you considered replacing the 11t cog with a Shimano 14t cog (or a 13t cog) for loaded touring? I rarely use the 11-tooth cog, so having another cog would help tighten up the spacing between cogs or add a lower gear. I am upgrading both my touring bike and Surly Big Dummy. I recently purchased a Shimano HG50 Cassette 9 Speed 14-25t and a Shimano Ultegra CS-6600 10-Speed 14-25t. I will try a similar setup to the one you have shown in this Mullet Cues Hack Demo.
There are so many "hacks" like this with Shimano combined with the Chinese/Taiwanese stuff. Like the 12 speed Lt-Woo mechanical (cable and Hydro) road levers actually have the same pull ratio (identical not just close) as Shimano 11 speed road/gravel and 10s GRX, so you can take the 12s Lt-Woo levers and combine them with pre Di2 11s 105, Ultegra, DA, and GRX to get 12 speed mechanical rim or disc.
@@PathLessPedaledTV Yeah I get it, especially you not being a big fan of the hydro stuff, as with LT-Woo that was when there was a noticeable jump in quality/design. I tried running an 11-42 on my gf's GRX 2x and it doesn't shift as smoothly as you... Granted, it's running 105 brifters indexed, but still the B screw is allll the way in and it barely clears the largest cog (42t). I gotta admit, I wish you made a comprehensive "groupset" with parts lists etc on your website. I find myself rewatching your videos to piece the information together...
Great discovery. I put a Rivendell friction shifter on my LHT. Seemed to be shifting great but noticed it would skip up or down a gear when I stood up on the pedals. Running it 9 spd with 9 spd chain……..thoughts
Having the same issue, then, Old Anorak, here, are we still supposed to stand on our crank anymore (isn’t modern cycling about spinning as fast as you possibly can, honestly Dunno 🤷♀️?). Apparently, you’ll have to check, a *true* 9 speed chain should be 11/128, many, supposedly 9 speed chains, and sold as such, would be 3/32 ? Worth noting, that I experience these chain jumps, when cranking Watts, only when on the first small cogs, no chain jumps when on the last 5 larger cogs on a 11-32 cassette.
Slx 12 speed will run 10 and 11 speed. Go up to a 51 tooth cassette. Picked 2 up for $36 a pop. 10 speed gravel bike I run a 48 and 11 speed mtb I run a 51. Works like a charm.
Would love to know the crank/bb spindle length to understand the chain line. The 'near' match with indexed shifters can 'mysteriously' go off a few hundred miles in - and wear tolerances are often equally un-accountable. Overall, completely love this regular segment.
Possibly a silly question. When using the friction shifter, can you not run the cables under the bar tape? Thinking of possibly using friction shift on a future bike build. Thanks. Really enjoy ya'lls content!
yeah, that is a nice bonus knowledge! Also, you did'nt bump up the RD on the stop lip of the hanger! That's why the chain was loose. Ask me how I know this!
I am sure Shimano will bring out the CUES compatible drop bar shifters at some stage. But it is always nice to have options so the compatibility of the Microshift brifters is a bonus. 😎🇦🇺👍
We already know they don't have the same ratio. GRX 10 and 11 speed has the same cable pull as road 11. cues has a different cable pull than any previous shimano group.
@@lastfm4477 I can confirm a Shimano 10-speed DynaSys derailleur has 1.05 pull ratio (by measuring the cable pulled by a shifter). Many sources claim 11/12-speed mountain derailleurs of Shimano have the same ratio as 10-speed. Even SRAM X-Actuation is interchangeable with Shimano DynaSys. And from the conclusion of this video, it appears CUES is no different than DynaSys. (Russ has already tried the combination of Sword shifter and a DynaSys derailleur, and it works.)
Super cool to see this confirmed for real. Advent 9 speed is also meant to be totally compatible with advent x and sword (same pull ratio) has big capacity and rear tooth max and comes in clutch and non-clutch versions. In theory should index fine with advent x and sword shifters and 10 speed cassette ?
I run the 810 2x with an 11/42 XT cassette mated to a 42/26 with a campy 10 speed Veloce FD. I use the Dia Compe wong shifters and they work perfectly with 11 speed. Just can’t get hold of the Uno shifter in UK at the moment
I did a lot of hack back then. Single plate xt 780 in the front in 2013. 32 cassette with an ultegra 6800 short. Etc. Everything I did back then wasnt suppose to work.
I will give you the best tip for any bicycle with any derailleur system model or brand: Use only 9 speed cassette. The chain is much stronger, therefore lasting 3-4 times longer distance (best 9speed chain - Sram made in Portugal). all 9 speed cassette, 9 speed derailleurs or shifters are the same method in all road or MTB bike and compatible to each other in any models on the market. (with one exceptional: you should adapt the length of the cage). Also you can find all range of 9 speed cassettes: from 11-25 till 11-50. And last but not least: It's significantly cheaper than 10-11-12 speed systems. Don't follow the brainwash Shimano and other companies insert to your mind. They base their profits on your ignorance. 99% of you don't need the expensive models Shimano or Sram selling you. They just rob your pocket.
Here's another for you - MICROShift Advent X cassette and shifter (10spd) with Deore 11spd derailleur. Better clutch and less movement in the derailleur, plus lighter cassette than Shimano (although the MS do wear out quicker)
sorry if I wasn't paying attention or anything but will the Sword shifters work with older Shimano RDs? Dynasys, non clutch ones? 9 and 10speeds in particular
@@PathLessPedaledTV thanks! By the way, you really helped with your rd-m3020 review, now have it on my bike, rocking an 11-40 cassette with 46/30 in front and sora shifters :) Love your experiments and bike hacking!
Would love a comparison between the Sword and the old Ltwoo GR7 setup, both 1x10, but the Ltwoo is much cheaper than the Microshift. Is it worth paying triple? Or is Ltwoo just and underrated gem?
Cues cassette has 11 speed spacing tho, so a 10 speed cues wouldn't work. I like that the cues cassette will extend the chain life so using a cues RD without the cassette is kind of not worth it. I am using a cues 10 speed 11-39 in friction.

Blue loctite on the screw. Also depends on what derailleur you're using.
@@PathLessPedaledTV I believe it’s a Shimano deore xt came stock with the bike
Slx 12 speed will run 10 and 11 speed. Go up to a 51 tooth cassette. Picked 2 up for $36 a pop. 10 speed gravel bike I run a 48 and 11 speed mtb I run a 51. Works like a charm.
What shifters do you use on the gravel bike?
Would love to know the crank/bb spindle length to understand the chain line. The 'near' match with indexed shifters can 'mysteriously' go off a few hundred miles in - and wear tolerances are often equally un-accountable. Overall, completely love this regular segment.
Possibly a silly question. When using the friction shifter, can you not run the cables under the bar tape? Thinking of possibly using friction shift on a future bike build. Thanks. Really enjoy ya'lls content!
Yes. But you need tandem length shift cables for the rear cable. Standard road cables are too short.
You can totally run it under the tape to the headtube area. Been doing it for years with regular shifting cables.
Congratulations! You just discovered the hot water! 😁All derailors are quasi the same. So the only mandatory compatibility is shifter-cassette!
One of my bikes mixes Shimano RX100, STX, Microshift, LTWoo, Tiagra and Sora. I love a mix and match. 😄
Russ, maybe try a 26 tooth chainring and see if that solves your loose chain? Keep up the great work and enjoy the wine in Spain.
Or even try tightening the b limit screw a bunch
I think that all we really need to know if the index pull length of the shifter vs the gap between sprockets at the cassette x gain of the derailleur.
I’d like to know if a sora shifter could shift the advent derailleur. Would be nice to upgrade for cost of derailleur and cassette
No
yeah, that is a nice bonus knowledge!
Also, you did'nt bump up the RD on the stop lip of the hanger! That's why the chain was loose. Ask me how I know this!
Thanks Russ, we appreciate it
Thank you for continuing to answer the compatibility questions and trying things out 👏
Nice hack. Does it mean that also dynasys shifters with Cues rear derailleur should shift (somewhat acceptably) on a HG cassette? 🤔
That works better than I can get my complete all Cues drivetrain to work.
Sword is dope. Wish i had a reason to buy one.
Oh man, this is great news. Thank you for experimenting!
If cues rear mech is using 1:1 then would SRAM shifters not be a better option?
One more thing. Cable-derai-chainO-lattee is under greater tension as you go up, so housing system stiffness matters.
I am sure Shimano will bring out the CUES compatible drop bar shifters at some stage.
But it is always nice to have options so the compatibility of the Microshift brifters is a bonus.
😎🇦🇺👍
As usual, doing all the things that bike tinkerers want to know! Bike 'bad ideas' legend!!!!!
Can you try it with the grx derailleur too? If it works, that means grx and cues have the same cable pull.
Thats one heck of a derailleur angle to get those large sprockets!
1:13 these bars could take MTB shifters with bit of hacksawing
Sensah gra10 also works with sword as well with the same wonky pull ratio. 80 bucks for the pair is a steal
This is awesome, well done!
Wait... does that mean the indexing on a microshift bar end shifter might also work?
Hey, any thoughts on a 10 / 52 cassette and a 50 / 36 crank? I have been wanting to put one together, but all I get is crazy looks
Seems like a bad idea.
I’m using a similar gearing with 44-34-24 triple (Ritchey Logic) and CUES 11-43 10-speed. This is just about the limit for an RD-M953 friction shift.
I run the 810 2x with an 11/42 XT cassette mated to a 42/26 with a campy 10 speed Veloce FD. I use the Dia Compe wong shifters and they work perfectly with 11 speed. Just can’t get hold of the Uno shifter in UK at the moment
Aaaand the prices of Microshift & CUES went crazy...thank you Russ :P
Can I use the Shimane cues 4000u 9 speed with the Sora shifter 9 speed tho? Since this video tests the 10/11 speed cues and Sora shifters
I did a lot of hack back then. Single plate xt 780 in the front in 2013. 32 cassette with an ultegra 6800 short. Etc. Everything I did back then wasnt suppose to work.
An OT question: I currently run Silver 2 shifters with a 2 X 9 wide low setup. Is there any benefit to going with the Uno shifter for the rear?
Only necessary with newer generation of rear derailleurs. 11spd and up.
Stupid question : this is only if we're going for a 2 x 11? This is not applicable if we're just going for a 1 x 11?
Tell us about that handlebar, Rusty!!
How about the compatibility of U4000(cues 9s) rd to R3000( sora) STI? Is it possible that they can be compatible together?
No
I will give you the best tip for any bicycle with any derailleur system model or brand:
Use only 9 speed cassette.
It will work if you have many OLD type 10-speed cassette. This is also means that it is not compatible with new Cues 10s cassette.
In this video didn’t see adjustments for taking up chain slack ! (Upper g screw)
Might have been able to take out chain slack, (possibly)
Cues Vs Xt derailleur what is the difference the cage looks the same just like the GRX.
Isn't is a thing anymore these days to avoid big+big and small+small combo's? (started in the 90's with 105 3x9, only just now got 2x10 grx)
Finally Shimano did it them selfs on the new cube Nuroad
what's the awesome raised dropped bar?
Does a cues cassette have the same spacing? So would it work with a linkglide cassette as well, since this here semes ti be a hyperglyde cassette?
Cues Version B will be for Drop Bars....Drop Bar B Cues
I used to run a r5800 rd and the m5100 cog (11-36) with a 50/34 (r7000) weirdly enough with some fine tuning it shifts fine ish
sorry if I wasn't paying attention or anything but will the Sword shifters work with older Shimano RDs? Dynasys, non clutch ones? 9 and 10speeds in particular
10spd dynasis for sure.
Need a cave of bad ideas frame only, with a silent hub! Would make the viewing a bit better the hub noise drives me loco!
All your bikes look nice. What size wheels do you have? 700c?
Are you running that GRX with a roadlink to increase the max sprocket, or is it just a regular derailleur hanger?
No roadlink needed.
@@PathLessPedaledTV thanks! By the way, you really helped with your rd-m3020 review, now have it on my bike, rocking an 11-40 cassette with 46/30 in front and sora shifters :) Love your experiments and bike hacking!
the best setup are for single chainring with cues?
Would love a comparison between the Sword and the old Ltwoo GR7 setup, both 1x10, but the Ltwoo is much cheaper than the Microshift. Is it worth paying triple? Or is Ltwoo just and underrated gem?
10:18 actually, you don't need to check the 4th point. Three points are more than enough to ensure the hanger is straight.
Actually you do to check if it twisted on the axis.
@@PathLessPedaledTV twisted on the axle? What do you mean? Three points are enough to construct any flat plane geometrically. Am I missing something?
Cues cassette has 11 speed spacing tho, so a 10 speed cues wouldn't work. I like that the cues cassette will extend the chain life so using a cues RD without the cassette is kind of not worth it. I am using a cues 10 speed 11-39 in friction.
Wouldn't the range limitations be remedied by simply avoiding cross chaining?
It would be but most people don’t have shift discipline to pull it off.
Russ! What is your setback seatpost? Who makes it? Appreciate the info in your vids, just awesome. I ride a 2021 Kona Rove Ltd and it’s both comfortable AND tricky to fit. I have the seat slammed too far back rn. Thanks
wait, so doesn't this mean that cues derailer should work with the 105 or ultegra shifters? or am I getting confused and mean GRX shifters?
No. 105 and Ultegra have different pull ratio.
