Games that will never achieve the success they yearn for, but you can’t deny the obvious effort against all odds. Today, we celebrate its crass, absurdist ride!

Man, what a strange and unique game! Never would've expected to see something like this come out of the Ninja Gaiden franchise. I can see why the Gaiden core audience might've been turned off, but I for once welcome more games with character and heart like this!

Its crazy to see the character action genre go from the king during the ps2 era to a niche now.

Ooooh, that's one I'm hoping to get to soon! FWIW, if you're looking for a fresh take on the genre, be sure to look up Outlaw Heart. It's trying to combine this sort of over the top action with some rail-shooter elements and Jet Set Radio's art direction!

Reception for this game would be wildly different if it wasn't for "Ninja Gaiden" in the title. It's a fun game on it's own.
Also it's a perfect fit for Steam Deck!
Bro, i love this game, i have no idea why soo many people hated it, killing zombies with a cyborg ninja, with a metal arm that can be used as a chain? i give this game a solid 10/10.
Some people are so averse to anything different that beautiful madness is lost on them, sadly. Glad you got a kick out of it, though!
An original series’ great success can be a spinoff’s greatest weakness. I feel it gets a lot of hate simply for what the original franchise set out to be.. but Yaiba Z is a good game in and of itself and I’ll wager that the reviews would have been a lot more positive had the “Ninja Gaiden” name not been attached.
That said, this is my first game into the Ninja Gaiden franchise and it runs like a BEAST on Steam Deck.
Medium settings at 60 FPS with roughly 3 hours of battery life with little to no tinkering involved. This game is a top performer on Deck

Yeah, I'm starting to just take it as a rule that any spin-off to Japanese gaming franchise that its fandom hates into obscurity is worth playing.

In time , the game will be loved for what it is. I think it's biggest failing was using the ninja Gaiden name. should of stayed away from ninja Gaiden and established its own identity.
Why? Because the hard core fans and critics who loved the ninja Gaiden series were completely insulted by this game.
That's the true reason it got shit on and rejected. if didn't have ninja Gaiden in the title or Ryu in the game, and it came out as Just Yaiba , it would of been a cult classic and given 4 out of 5 stats , etc.
The community merely wanted to message team ninja to NEVER do this again and that they want Ninja Gaiden 4.
That's all the drama was about.

I think the more practical thing is for fandoms to stop losing their minds whenever a spin-off is, well... a spin-off.

As a major fan if ninja gaiden from xbox thru ds through all the sigma rereleases, i dont have an issue with the gameplay in general, its a hack and slash with decent visuals and a cool twist of powers.
My issue stems from the fact that it was doing the borderlands/no more heros/ all games around this time thing where they cellshade (no real issues there) and the crude edgy humour for that time.
Again dont have an issue with the idea. Im okay with another character being the spotlight but to change the entire vibe and tone of a game thats been well loved and praised for years is what made fans like me get the ick from this game.
It was a risk that couldve been a cheaper production and release on the xbla arcade to supplement a release of a mainline game and i think people wouldve been more open to it as a whole.
Underrated game.

Saw this was on PS Plus Premium, so I may have to give this a try whenever I get around to playing the NG Master Collection.
I'm not sure how it'll handle over PS3 BC streaming, but FWIW, it'll run on virtually any PC these days if that option doesn't pan out.

Sadly lack the budget for one ATM, but I gotta imagine it would run well. The hardware requirements are minimal by modern standards, and the input defaults should translate perfectly well.

I was fully onboard up until you said 'puzzles'.
How many of these time consuming-run around aimlessly for minutes sections until you decide to open up youtube video in hope to complete the puzzle are there?
... This... just gets to me. Why do action games HAVE to have puzzle sections and racing games or fighting games dont? What is it about action games that are required by law to have these sections and an assumption that if you like the main genre the same people will like puzzles.. I dont get it, I just dont get it.
It's the easiest to code pace breaker, if I was to throw out a guess. A quick puzzle to shake things up a little.
To be fair, in the case of Yaiba, said puzzles are also trying to tutorialize how the different elements work together later in combat, so at least that information is relevant. It's not the best way to teach these aspects, but they were also clearly working on a super tight budget (the studio shut down not long after release, sadly).
Plus, once you know the solutions, you pretty much just blitz through them on replay and barely notice their existence.
