Werner has the most calming voice.
Here for Herzog
me too
Actress round table: Galloway asks about diversity in Hollywood. Amy Adams says "why don't you ask the producers?"
Producers round table: Galloway doesn't ask about diversity.
Documentarian round table:
"We're having a big conversation about diversity in film right now"
Werner Herzog? I'm all in.
same reason I started watching
@Carlos Saraiva Me watching this cause of Werner Herzog, - looking at the table, one PC woman, 4 dark guys, - me having bias, hearing the 1. sentence of the moderator " blablabla important issues of race in your films blablabla´." - 1 sentence to proof my bias right. Still keep on watching until 1:00. -1st sentence from a director, - the PC woman adresses race in their films. Fed up with this stinking shit, ....
GOOOOOOODBYE. :)
Werner Herzog on a Hollywood round table = Instant Like.
I agree!
I just wish he had more opportunity to talk.
I feel like they knew he had no chance of being nominated for an Academy Award but invited him anyway. He's the only reason I clicked on this video.
I like his voice and structure of sentence building. It really resonates with me.
Lady, let people speak and stop telling other people what their opinions are!
Werners unchanging expression in the first few minutes is making me laugh so much
i swear i've been laughing non stop
Lesson of this roundtable: Kirsten Johnson seems a bit obtrusive. Manners ABC: Don't interrupt when other people talk, don't talk over people, don't make a topic about yourself when it is not.
Alluviale Daempfer dont interrupt Herzog when hes giving golddust in advice and opinion
Alluviale Daempfer So just like Michael Moore acted last year
Well, I didn't see it because he is unbearable, but it speaks volume concerning his intellectual capacity and validates me in my assessment of it.
I think EVERYONE is pleased to be there with Werner Herzog.
Herzog seems to be the only one who isn't just a blob of ego and ideology.
Sure whatever you want to see.
Feel free to disagree.
He is a just a blob.
please let them not disagree with a matter of fact. The man due to product of environment is the humblest of them all
It certainly looks like a circle jerk to me.
I wonder how all the rest of the documentarians felt about Kirsten deciding to basically speak for all of them on multiple occasions.
Free speech, anyone could have jumped in if they wanted. I may not agree with everything Kirsten says but she's entitled to her opinion.
We should ask Kirsten to find out.
Not everyone is as rude as arrogant as her, to interrupt and speak on behalf of others.
Oh she's "entitled" all right!
She's a white liberal.
I started reading the comments and thinking, jeez people are being a little harsh on Kirsten... half way into the video I'm like GOD I WISH SHE WOULD SHUT UP!!!
and now I'm at the end of the video and wish she hadn't been on this round table :(
Johnson seriously needs to let Herzog talk.
it sucks that she didn't try to have a conversation with Herzog. Her documentary "Cameraperson" (which is why she was on this table) is as engrossing and introspective as Herzog's best docs.
Nothing ruins a conversation faster than someone who loves to hear themselves talk. She aparently thinks she's massively important and is annoyed when the moderator tries to shift the conversation away from her vapid ramblings towards the other people at the table.
I just skip to the Herzog parts.
Just let Herzog school everyone for an hour. The woman documentarian was well annoying, talking over him and shutting him down.
Scoping out the competition, I see. You guys should do some hour-length roundtables, too!
Dylan Blue It's a roundtable, everybody gets to speak
Dylan Blue Agreed, she should sit the fuck down and let Herzog blast with his radiance and bow down before him
Dizzy Blu FUCK YEAH!
@@guileniam I really wish she'd not let her ego get the best of her. Her film "Cameraperson" is probably in the top 5 best documentaries released in the last 25 years.
Herzog has more experience with filmmaking than everyone else on the table.
like a father talking to his children.
;)
Kristen: What does this mean for me? How was I a part of making my film? It's so important how all of our roles are important to me because I... and let me just say...
Werner is the only reason I came here
Please do an interview with Mr. Herzog and Darren Aronofsky and Alejandro Jodorowsky together
I’d swap Aronofsky for David Lynch
I wish everyone would just shut up so we can listen to Werzog teach us his tricks.
Nathan Lamb - others such as Raoul Peck have interesting things to say! Jeesh!
Though I'm sure she's a talented filmmaker, Kirsten Johnson reminds me of Tracy Flick in Election. Stop interrupting everybody and stop completing their speeches for them. Herzog has been making films for half a century, he must have something valuable to say.
Kirsten Johnson seemed to speak in circles and never actually answered a question.
On top of her tendency to speak on behalf of all the other filmmakers! Gosh, she's irritating.
And you know Kirsten is annoying when even Stephen loses patience of all people :')
It kind of looks like Werner Is leaning away from that woman 😂😂
"The loudest one n the room is the weakest one in the room." -Frank Lucas
Yeah she's terrible
So let me get this straight...you have Werner Herzog - the Werner Herzog - and you don't ask him a single question til 15 minutes in? What? You're busy asking every man and his dog while Werner remains silent until he decides to pitch in himself at 9:55 to say one word "Media"?! Then silence. No questions. Then he chips in again at 11:35 to compliment Ezra who says "Thank you". Oh, no he doesn't. He...has a sip of water. What? Its Herzog. He's made 29 documentaries, you've made 5...he's a living legend and he says "Shortest 8 hours I've spent". And...nothing. Ingrate. Then we wait another view minutes til he gets his first question at 14:38. What malarky.
You must remember that it's edited and the order of questions might not be the same order as recorded. I ended up here because I am a big fan of Herzog, but the idea of the series of interviews is also to show the works of the newcomers. Let's be honest, polite and balanced.|
My only concern here is the woman interrupting everybody and complaning that there's no women in the round table. There will be, she can't blame the world that she was ahead of time during her life. The women are coming up. They are taking their place.
Anyone got the timestamps for when Herzog talks? Its almost unbearable to listen to the others around the table
Kirsten cannot answer a question. Answer the bloody question Kirsten!
Werner spends most of the video crossing his arms or rubbing his glass of water looking at everyone else as if to say, "Dafuq this lassie on about?"
Holy shit WERNER HERZOG!
This is as exciting as Ridley Scotts roundtable where he didnt give a fuck. The woman should sit the fuck down and let Herzog blast with his radiance and bow down before him
Best bits: Lool 17:50 the woman: "Can I jump in here?" Herzog looks around like "wtf where is your manners? I was talking, I have not given you permission to speak"
38:35: Raul: "Why is this woman still talking"
Herzog (turning to Raul) : "I have no clue what she is saying either"
You seem like a hater. They all nodded in approval when she was discussing the boundaries of photographers.
Tracey C aye they did. Too bad she kept cutting in with crap for the rest of it.
You have to wait over 11:00 until you hear from Werner.....FAIL,
5 big egos and Werner Herzog.
Ezra doesn't have more ego than the normal person. Do research before making proclamations.
always interesting and a pleasure to watch. Thanks hollywood reporter!
Here for Herzog. Kirsten is painfully annoying. She probably feels that she "represents" all women and wants to be "as tough" as the boys. In all fairness, a couple of her documentaries are very important and substantial.
i came here for werner and i stayed for werner.
donneRak 1080p. don't forget to leave.
I think Kirsten was very aware she was the only woman and felt the need to be as assertive as possible unfortunately she doesn't like answering questions.
Wow, 6 amazing people. I could listen to them for an hour each.
harveythepooka I would like to listen to one of them significantly less
48:22 unbelievable
"Why do we want to know about the risks filmmakers take? I mean...why?"
How about because this is a roundtable interview? Jesus this Kristen Johson...and she's a mansplainer too!
These Roundtable(s) are just the icing on the cake for a movie buff like me.
These idiots waited 14:37 min till they asked Herzog a question!!!! The ONLY person I wanted to hear; the rest are yammering infants in film-making compared to him. SHEESH.
This awesome documentry was just insane!
i love that they don't take shit from steven
Kirsten Johnson seems like a person i'd like to stay FAR away from.
She started like 10 responses with "We all" speaking for the entire group... so annoying.
Have some respect. This woman is a warrior who interacts with people and cultures most of us would never have the courage or wherewithal to interact with, let alone gain their friendship and permission to openly film their lives. What she does is not easy, none of this is for any of these people and they are some of the best in the world doing it. Be thankful we even have images of the far reaches of the planet - and traditional cultures who subscribe to a different way of life.
T Mac melter
+Dulguun Otgon I love how you're so obsessed with gender that you're the first one to bring it in just because someone doesn't share your opinion. If you feel the need to insult someone that way, maybe it's you who needs a safe space, dear.
you're a drama queen
This woman got to let others talk!
Joshua Oppenheimer should have been there next to Herzog - Kirsten Johnson seems to say a lot about little
I usually don't comment on these haha, but Kirsten you had some really good points- they're just not good when you cut off other people to say them. I'm wondering if her feeling the need to "prove" herself at a table surrounded by men (and a room, really, as she mentioned all the camerapeople were men), and thus was pre-emptively speaking (note I'm not saying she did have to prove herself being the only female in that situation, but I'm wondering if she felt like she had to and that's why she kept cutting in.)
Can we all take a moment to contextualize the criticism of Johnson by observing that she is the only woman in the room?
More Herzog, less of the egotistical woman.
wow! that lady won't let anyone speak, who is she Galloway's daughter?
Does Kirsten Johnson have to make a comment about EVERYTHING... it's exhausting, most of her comments are weirdly patronizing. She keeps talking for others. Until the last question when she talks about herself and I really liked that.
these people dont realize they are the presence of greatness Herzog a mad genius
Nobody at the table seems to have any idea who Werner Herzog actually is. He speaks like 5 minutes in total...
Many things that are being said here are off topic and unnecessary.
I'm quite certain that the other filmmakers knows who Herzog is! Come on! No, the issue was that Kirsten Johnson felt the need to constantly talk on everyone else's behalf.
Werner Herzog is the man! Cool to have him there and it would also good to have someone who does animal documentaries - that subject seems to be ignored by the Academy dudes constantly
You can tell this is a directors roundtable because these guys challenge each question. Directors aren't worried about appearances they just want to showcase their work in the correct way and they know it inside and out.
Sometimes I wish they would all just drink red wine while doing this and be a little tipsy
Definitely would make these Roundtables a lot more interesting
They talk of dangerous situations. Herzog carried a ship over a mountain once. he got shot once while filming. Herzog and actor Klaus Kinski attempted to murder each other. And most dangerous of all, he ate his own shoe. Herzog is awesome.
Herzog is the GOAT.
Also, Galloway's shirt's unbuttoned again...
I was once told, the smartest thing to do when in a room full of your idols is.. don’t speak just listen. Now considering they’re all peers I feel they all deserve a place to speak but man... that Kirsten woman sure knows how to cut off quite a few amazing filmmakers. At least three times from throughout this round table did she cut off three amazing filmmakers. Between her and Galloway I knew we’d not get a great fluid insight.
Ugh, Stephen, you're killing me...
Wow, they (a couple of them) sure are easy to trigger
Why is there no women on the panel
The lady director is a bit annoying, its like she wants to be the center of attention all the time.
Kirsten Johnson appears to carry herself with a certain ruthlessness. Maybe she is better off reporting for TMZ, digging in people's trash, that kinda stuff. Other than that, great group of people.
Funny to see how anyone at the table has so much to say but Herzog is the man, the Boss, without speaking a word.
"Can I jump in here?"
NO
second year in a row, no composers roundtable....what the heck THR!!!!???
The female documentarian really is disrespectful of the extraordinary artist to her left, I can't conceive why she feels so threatened by Herzog's views. Who, I suppose, she spends most her time talking about herself instead of the work. Painful to watch.
Because Werner Herzog his works are often a resemblance of the great faustian european spirit, the people at this table fear/despise that greatness.
@@Z0Dll Oh please. You don't even know what that means. And the arguments the two had at the table were mostly mundane and had very little to do with style and technique. One argument was whether or not Werner would take his cinematographer to the lip of a volcano and risk their life. She tried to say as a cinematographer she would not have though twice about going, she would've gone.
OMG SHE CANNOT STOP INTERRUPTING HERZOG OH MY GOD
Finally !!
after watching this, for some reason I wanna hedgehog
really wished they added Ava Duvernay (13th) to this round table!
Someone should've gone into fucking politics. I'm waiting 30 minutes for Herzog to utter more than 3 sentences.
Johnson ended me about 10 minutes in. Learn how to speak for yourself.
stephen convey has finally leart the art of keeping mum
So where can one actually view the documentaries? Unless HBO or PBS in states airs these programs, they're difficult to find. okay, A&E's pan and scan orientated channel showed life, animated one night, no repeats. Odd how 2016 was year of OJ.
+tombo Available for purchase? I don't have Netflix since I still have pricey cable and i still purchase dvds, as I've heard rights time out all the time on the streaming sites. So only the popular ones are available, huh. Not that I'd ever bother with anything the white woman who speaks for all did. Thanks!
Galloway had to interrupt her... think about that, STEPHEN GALLOWAY HAD TO INTERRUPT SOMEONE ELSE TO HEAR A POINT.
Where's the 13th director?
WHERE IS AVA DUVERNAY FOR 13TH!?
THANK YOUUU
Zach Gerrity this was filmed before the nominations
question to herzog: "what's the most dangerous situation you've been in?"... and people start to laugh, like "here we go"...
wow. that women is so off putting
It kind of looks like Werner Is leaning away from that woman 😂😂
Before watching this clip, I want say to myself. I want to make documentary about bass.
They're all acting like Werner Herzog isn't one of the most seasoned and visceral Documentarians alive who's been making films for half a century.
Cool
Werner Herzog + 6 or 7 randos. (Didn't even bother to count)
Couldn't finish this because Kristen Johnson's ego kept interrupting.
Imagine interrupting Werner Herzog this much. It’s hard to watch her try and overrun his honest answers. Why would you do this? To what end?
Why the hell is this woman talking over him. Noone cares about your film. lol...noone cares...31:19: hes not talking to you!!!!!!!!!!!
She is a good documentary filmmaker - that much is clear. But jeez, her need to constantly talk on behalf of everyone is bloody annoying! At one point, you could tell that Herzog was irritated by her.
4 political activists, one hardcore ideologist, one legendary filmmaker and 2 moderators. ... what is the concept of this round??
The woman is annoying. Ego trip personified. When Herzog says "he knows the soul of men" he's talking about something she would only criticise but be unable to understand.
I mean, it's great that she's engaged and has an opinion and all, but Jesus does she have to comment on everything everyone else says or tries to say?
Hahaha this is very funny
Ezra: “I’m pretty sure up until a couple of years ago I wanted to play centre field for the Red Sox”
Kirsten: “I wanted to play football too”
Oh Kirsten…
I'm never seeing her film
Harmony should be in here
My goodness are these people pretentious. I love and have watched all of these THR Roundtables and this one surprised me the most. I expect the pretentious attitude from the actors roundtable (and they weren't), I can even forgive the directors for being pretentious (again, they weren't), but these doc directors...wow. Very eye opening.
I think the issue is that this female with her wildly swinging arms set the tone/atmosphere of the roundtable from the beginning. Everybody just retreated behind their "perfect" front. If you watch the roundtable with the feature film directors, you can see how Oliver Stone is opening everybody up by talking about his own defeats. It's much more interesting.
MR BEAN, GO AWAY :D
i personally think that herzog is on another level to the rest of the filmmakers here. he claims that nobody working on his films has ever been harmed - what about those tribespeople in the amazon who were shot at with arrows during the filming of fitzcarraldo? at times in his career some of the choices he has made in the interest of fulfilling his artistic vision have been morally questionable to put it lightly, but his body of work is actually quite staggering. with that said, there is no shortage of vanity in the man, not that it is necessarily misplaced. i don't understand why so many are quick to single him out as the only one here with an ounce of humility. kirsten johnson, despite clearly admiring the great man, seems very resistant to let him make his points. but, again, i don't understand why so many are jumping down her throat. she makes some pretty interesting points and speaks very articulately.
oh yeah and fuck stephen galloway. how has he still got this gig?
W H. the tribespeople who were shot at with arrows during the filming of Fitzcarraldo had nothing to do with the film. it was some kind of feud between the tribes. that's how he tells it and i believe him. about Kirsten Johnson, you can make some pretty interesting points and be articulate without cutting others, especially Herzog. This is the issue here i think.
the hosts want this to be about race so badly.
In 1962(?) I wanted to see Vesuvius but instead they took me to Pompeii's Theater at The Forum . . . and then to Versailles where a semi-truck plowed into our car . . . I think because of me throwing eggs out of a window. Life is strange for me.
That sounds pretty normal.
