Yeah, I remember back in late 2005 when the 7th generation started and the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 were released. Those looked totally incomparable to everything that had come before. The 8th generation was nowhere near on the same level.
Billions of triangles and all that is cool, but looking at, for example, the desert levels of Star Wars Battlefront II, released in 2017, I do not see much difference with the demonstrated in this video.
Didn't the Matrix Tech Demo look and play like this? "Oh but that's not a full game" yeah who cares, the map is procedurally generated and bigger than GTA5's map. The literal purpose of the tech demo is to show what the engine can do, and it's clearly shown that a full game at that scale can run, play and look great.
wouldn't be surprised if each triangle is around a dozen bytes. however, models like the statue only need to be stored once, and i'm sure there's a lot of procedural generation
It's not actually all that complicated most of it is just talking about the lighting system used I'm not getting the ps5 but it does look cool I'm just waiting for the 3080ti my 2080ti will go up for sale when that's announced lol

@@ex0stasis72 You have no idea what you are talking about. The constant streaming in of 8k textures was due to the PS5 insanely fast SSD. Go sit in the back and be quiet. The Engine can't do that by itself, the storage, I/O and overall balance of the system allows the Engine to do all of this.🤦

This is mind-blowing. I can hardly believe how far we've come in terms of realism in games. Can't wait to see what people do with this technology moving forward. Great work, Unreal team!
@Umbrella Corporation VR comes with such a massive performance penalty though. We need the "order of magnitude performance improvement" eye tracking & foveated rendering Oculus are working on, but that level of *p-e-r-f-e-c-t* eye tracking & extremely efficient rendering pipeline is a number of years off still, unfortunately.
Spoiler: if it looks too good to be true it usually is. I've seen similarly impressive 'demos' for years now without one manifesting itself into a playable game.
This looks like a sci-fi fantasy version of Tomb Raider. The character even looks and sounds like Lara Croft a little bit. The graphics are pretty much photorealistic, and the lighting is fantastic.

@facelessninetytwo aka Man of the Rain frankly when the visuals are *this* good 30fps is justifiable. The PS5 pro (and more likely the PC port) can be 60 fps.

@@TheRafark that's because it was more about the environment and lighting no need to get an actor for mo cap or pay someone extra to animate with extreme detail that's why the water barely splashed why animate it
This randomly popped up in my head and it reminded me how it’s been 4 years, already halfway through the console’s lifecycle and we still haven’t received a game up to this caliber. Even maxing out games on my 4090 doesn’t match to something like this. Sad and false advertising
The amazing thing about this is that it's not really just "some tech demo". This is actually running on PS5 and looks phenomenal! This is really something that we can expect once the devs have had time to work with the hardware.
Assuming said developers license the UE5 engine to Epic, cause you know...is not like anyone can use the engine,, you have to pay Epic in order to use it legally , after all is not Unity engine.
You two realize this is still a small sample size. But i do agree the back grounds look amazing but the characters appearance could be much better. More news will come out for months to come
@@shayneletendre9451 the main characters face is an art style and not the main thing they're trying to show off. A photorealistic face is probably possible now that it's basically just big movie level cgi

When I see the sandstone environment in such detail, it makes me feel like I'm back in the slot canyons of southern Utah. I can almost feel the temperature changes from light to shadow and the dry air. I don't consider myself a big gamer and nowhere near a cg artist, but man that's beautiful.
This comment brings a smile to my face - whether it's the wind blown landscapes of Arches or the green canyons of Zion, I love the beauty in southern Utah, and definitely want to use their visuals in a game someday.

Well time for rest mode
wouldn't be surprised if each triangle is around a dozen bytes. however, models like the statue only need to be stored once, and i'm sure there's a lot of procedural generation
An SSD doesn't fix your download speed however it does speed up copying time but if the file sizes are huge still might take a min or 2
The problem for next gen consoles might be storage 850 gigs isn't enough

You can say that with every UE or UDK showcase. LOL.

The amazing thing about this is that it's not really just "some tech demo". This is actually running on PS5 and looks phenomenal! This is really something that we can expect once the devs have had time to work with the hardware.
And the best part, this is only a prototype footage from an early next-gen. Imagine how later titles will look like.
