6:18--I love Frollo's song there. It makes him less of the straight-up villain Disney turned him into and more like how he was in the book, a man at odds with his own desires because of the restrictions of the hierarchy of the Church.

Well, I'm glad there are people like you who get the concept. (Those who don't obviously would be the ones saying that "Frollo is really toned down" or "doesn't seem as evil", but I am not one of them.) I like Frollo being closer to the book for this way, it makes judging between him and Quasimodo on "what makes a monster and what makes a man" more of a riddle to really think about as well as having Quasimodo kill Frollo in the end like in the book (Which sadly doesn't happen in this production. :( ) Either way, I'm happy that I finally found someone who understands and agrees with the "toning down" of one of the most vile Disney villains ever who wasn't even that vile to begin with. Thank you for sharing your opinion. :)

Also I feel forcing religion on Esmeralda (like in the book when she was forced to pray before she was to hang right before Quasimodo saves her) would really show the corruption of the church through Frollo and can be just as taboo as him wanting Esmeralda to be his mistress. Nice Writing James Lapine! (original writer of the german stage show this is based on "Der Glockner von Notre Dame" who originally made this change in Frollo's character. Also the writer/director of the 2012 "Annie" revival, "Passion, "Into the Woods", and "Sunday in The Park with George" (All musicals except "Annie" composed by Stephen Sondheim, the composer of "Sweeney Todd".))

+Michael Ybarra Forcing religion on her would contradict "God Help the Outcasts" where she turns to it out of desperation.

The thing with that scene not being included in so many versions is that the scene, even in the novel, is not really there to make us feel sorry for Esmeralda having religion enforced on her as making her pray was not so much of problem to her. It is clear from one of the last chapters in the book where she prays fervently to the Virgin Mary to help her out when she feels that she is in danger, that due to her free pagan lifestyle, she is more than eager to cling to any deity available at any place at any time. The tension and drama during that scene comes mostly from the fact that she has to pray under Archdeacon Frollo's watch while being blackmailed by him for the second time. Therefore, this scene works best in the versions where Frollo is an Archdeacon and is right in front of her (eg the 1982 and the 1977 versions) and even so, there are other versions where Frollo is the Archdeacon and yet they leave this out (eg in the Luc Plamodon Notre Dame de Paris musical version) as this happens to be one blackmail scene too many. In the Disney versions where Frollo is a judge (and that includes the Disney movie, the Der Glockner stage version and the King's Academy version) there wouldn't really be much of a point to include that scene as Judge Frollo would not be standing nearby and Esmeralda would be facing the kind Archdeacon instead so of course they have replaced this with the bonfire scene which works better as Esmeralda has only a few minutes to live and is under pressure to choose really fast. Disney kept it that way for the La Jolla/Papermill production even though Frollo is the Archdeacon exactly because the bonfire scene is more dramatic than the penance scene. To the credit of the 1939 version, they did include the penance in front of Notre Dame scene even though Frollo was a judge. Or at least they attempted to include it as it doesn't work out as in the book since Esmeralda was about to kneel in front of the kind Archdeacon who wanted to help her and refused to let her do penance since he knew she was not guilty. This resulted in Judge Frollo stepping in and deciding that she might as well die without doing penance. So it never actually happened.

@bh5496 I disagree. By forcing religion on her, you're doing just that: forcing religion on her. It shows the corruption of the church, whereas "God Help the Outcasts" isn't aimed at the church, it's aimed at God and therefore more out of faith than out of religion.

      Frollo:
Gypsy witch, you rouse me the foolish wish to set you free
      I'll take you somewhere
      I can be your sanctuary
      I will save you, sorcerous
And raise you up to holiness
Forever, we will share our blessed sanctuary

Thanks for the question. Frollo was played by Andrew Titus, who has since graduated and now attends Samford University. Andrew appeared in numerous musicals at TKA including AIDA, The Phantom of the Opera, The Sound of Music, and Les Miserables.

Niyeal Winter when? 1999? 2000? Made of Stone was already in the Der Glockner von Notre Dame production since 1999. The English version is around 2014-2015
