Made of Stone - Hunchback of Notre Dame (stage version)

- Hunchback of Notre Dame - La Jolla Playhouse November 8, 2014
Quasi considers giving up and just letting Esmeralda burn at the stake; while the saints try to encourage him to save her. He rebukes them, thinking what do perfect saintly statues know of being deformed and the hardships of the world. In weeps he vows that going forth his heart shall be made of stone.
At the end of the musical he discovers that the saints who were guiding him only look beautiful spiritually, and that in life they were as deformed as he, and that in their eyes he is beautiful.
That man has lungs of STEEL.
And his name is Michael Arden
Lungs of stone
@@marshallwilburn6939 no something stronger
Listen to the German Quasimodo of that production. I love Michael but David jacobs was brilliant
@@benwusten5179 actually drew sarich originated the role, and i still think he brought the best version. he was incredible!
I love how they took one throw away line in the film and transformed it into this emotional and brilliant song.
Throw away line? Girl, that was one of the best lines in the whole damn movie. The songwriters would've been crazy not to use it!
M Fitzburger it was a throwaway line in the original book
littlemonkey246able was this line in the book? I don't think so lol
Nicole Francis imagine if they cut "a guy like you" and switched it with this. And make all the saints and gargoyles sing the "made of something stronger"
@@adrianmedeiros8431 the epicness should be... such a pity!
This is like Quasimodo's "No Good Deed."
Or No Good Deed, Menkenized...
actually, made of stone came first in the Berlin production
Exactly what I was thinking. Even the end music sounds similar😉 both are awesome, killer songs though
I mean, the lyrics were written by the same person...
Julie Sánchez EXACTLY
Michael Arden's belt is so effortless and smooth.
+Kristiana Corona I SPOT HAMILTON
+Kristiana Corona and ikr Michael is goals
Nope. Very flat and no vibration. You can hear the bad technique and stress in his neck and throat. If you want to hear a good high B flat, then listen to any opera tenor in Puccini’s “Recondita armonia”.
Echo Brigade 6 he added vibrato at the end
Jacob Koch forced vibrato. You can hear the stress and bad technique in this video. Bad technique is very common among broadway tenors, who if they trained their voices the right way would hit much higher notes and with much more sound.
I think it's absolutely heartbreaking that you can hear him going back into the "Quasimodo" voice when he's singing. As he sings the other songs about his dreams and hopes, his voice is crystal clear, but in this one his voice becomes broken again, symbolizing that he gave up his hope.
Omg you're absolutely right.
YES
Michael's belt on that last note is the actual meaning of life
@#Random it’s my favorite part of the whole song
Endlessly impressed that he can sing all those high notes while he's bent over, and still be able to make me cry on top of that. Incredible performance!
Nice picture
Mary Potash it actually helps to bend over 😂
sarae Arriazola Really? Tenors must be different than sopranos then; I would never be able to sing that high in my range while crunching up my core 😂😂
@@maryloohoo8526 Never say never friend, just keep on practicing :D
@@maryloohoo8526 it is absolutely a special skill -
you know how you see a performance that makes you think "Damn i wish i can sing?" this is one of those. if this was a braodway musical this would be nominated. DAMN.
A. Mikey B. It would win too
I agree; I’m still waiting for the day that it will be on Broadway
Hell, even being able to sing, this makes me think"damn! I wish I had his voice"
Michael Arden is the best Quasimodo hands down. The way he sings is just incredible. This would have made an amazing Broadway musical.
For sure. But instead Frozen got on Broadway instead of this masterpiece.
well i mean frozen is still amazing as a musical but yeah this is amazing
You’re right Quasimodo, we’re only made of Stone, but we KNEW that your lungs were made of something stronger
I don't why i laugh so hard lmao
I laughed at that I thought that was funny.
I still can't believe I saw this live (and was fortunate enough to be in the front row). It was amazing. Michael Arden's Quasimodo is a BADASS. Victor Hugo would be proud of that performance. :)
Lucky
YOUR SO LUCKY!
TheaterRaven Victor Hugo would be proud of how Les Mis and Hunchback influenced many people😊 (I'm not sure about the whole Enjoltaire fanfiction.)
@@glecyrances1874 actually that whole fanfiction about Enjolras and Grantaire is actually true, in the original novel, after Enjolras was shot 8 times, it said "Grantaire fell at his feet, as though struck by a thunderbolt" but in the original French, the term used in place of thunderbolt was "un coup de foundre", another way of describing love at first sight or Cupid's arrow, if you will. They died holding hands and everything. Hugo did everything to make the reader see that Grantaire loved Enjolras, nnd it was a very brave thing to write especially during the time from when he lived.
I know the best part of this song is that high C when he sings "as if I" and also "made of stone" at the end, but I can't get the part where he sings "until the day I die" at 3:46 out of my head. It is so clear, steady, and controlled that it almost makes me want to cry. He's just so good and talented and hits these notes with perfect clarity, all *without* auto-tune! Modern pop singers *wish* they had the raw talent Michael Arden has! Absolutely stellar performance!
Bb but yes
@@dominicc7104 Thanks, couldn't tell if it was C or B flat.
Out of all the live action adaptations they're making these days, this is the one I hope they make the most.
But Michael Arden has gotta be Quasimodo
yes
It has been recently announced that Disney are planning on a live action adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame!!!
Hannah Roe Michael Arden- Quasimodo
Norm Lewis- Claude Frollo
My school is doing hunchback and it will be the last time because of the live action
We're only made of stone, we just thought that you were made of something stronger
CHILLS
Michael Arden’s voice is amazing, the control he has over his voice especially during those more difficult notes needs to be studied. This has become one of my favorite songs. Michael’s breath control is incredible.
2:38 when Michael screams “take all your lies”, the way he yells lies just goes so much into the character, everything after is just or maybe even more beautiful 😍
Michael Arden just has such an amazing voice
I Agree.
I love the look Michael gives at the end of this song so bad ass
I can't imagine this was written keeping an 8 show week in mind.
That's what understudies/alternates are for. Phantom does the same thing for the part of Christine (a regular understudy plus an alternate). Pre recording that E above high C at the end of the title song isn't unheard of either.
+gray1730 only certain shows do or did this. As mentioned Phantom does it and so did Evita for whoever was playing Eva, and I think, but am not entirely sure, but Jekyll and Hyde might have for that duel role.
Christine honestly isn't as difficult as it's made out to be, it's hard but not impossible 8 times a week, even if the entire role were actually sung. As for Eva and J/H...THOSE are inhumanly impossible to do 8 times a week.
+gray1730 another show that might as well use this, but doesn't for whatever reason, is Wicked for Elphaba. That role is also a beast, and full time Elphaba's call out a lot, even the queen of steel vocal cords, Willemijn, has called out quite a bit.
Jennifer Hiemstra I know...and speaking of impossible roles, try Jesus and (especially) Judas from JCS. Rock style or not, tessituras like that are just insane.
Cody Fox Oh I nearly forgot about those two...HOW I have no idea, because those two are INSANE, particularly Judas. Yeah, lets have Judas sing constant high tenor A's within the first 5 minutes of this ROCK show...YIKES!
Why is it only counting my views?
Ok, this performance left me speechless. Is there ANYTHING, that Michael Arden CAN'T handle on the stage? Hopefully someday I can hear his voice IRL. He is the musical theatre himself. Go on, Michael.
Michael's glorious belts:
1:58
2:39
3:41
3:50
3:57
3:50 is my favorite
You're doing God's work for time-stamping these
Can we appreciate the people in the pit for this performance? They sounded incredible
nobody will ever dethrone his performance of this role. it’s utterly perfect.
I love his acting. He has so many subtle actions, and he does really well to show Quasimodo’s attempt at apathy which is short lived
That last bit was perfect.
can we please take a minute to appreciate that he sings half the song (& all of the songs in the show) while hunched over? How that had to have absolutely killed his breath support? and he's still incredible???
Michael Arden deserved a fucking tony award for this and I will die on this hill
His voice is just incredible. Effortless power - gives me goosebumps every time!!
Homeboy knocks it out of the park here. Don't think I've heard a better version of this song.
I've listen to this like 100 times no joke, and will never get tired of it! Michael Arden is wonderful!
Still the best musical! It never fails to impress me 👏
That final belt though...chills galore!
He did so well that it’s a perfect example of how to perform this song, I’m learning it right now (just without the Bb cuz I’m a baritone :P) and it’s so helpful to have such of a great performer to guide me in this process!
what alternative are you doing for the end belt if not a Bb?
Probably a G, the "as if" is a C and Eb respectively, so a g completes the c minor triad
I never thought of looking up Quasimodos actors name. I just loved listening to him. When someone asked me his name I got super giddy. My theater group where I live gathered to watch the Tonys a couple years back to support Michael Arden because he was from our theater group. So when I found out that he is also the star in this I got so happy. I am so proud that someone so talented has come from our city and our theater group and even won a Tony for his revival of a musical this year. I will definitely be watching him closer than ever before!
Michael Arden NAILED it!! Every time I hear this song I get goosebumps. I can't help but feel an emotional exchange when I listen- it's my favorite part of the musical, because there's so much to unpack. My heart.
Wow, he is just so phenomenal. He has the literal voice of an angel. He is amazing
3:07 holy- this line here is so incredibly done and I love it
I'm here from 2020 saying Michael Arden for the live action remake of Hunchback that we all know is happening.
I burst into tears on that last note. Jesus.
this is so inspirational , i love quesemodo he's beautiful inside and out
Quasimodo* and yes, I love him!!
WTF michael arden is crazy good, so much feeling
7 years later, still can’t believe I was there
As if IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII were made of STOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONE
Left me speechless and in total awe 😍
3:51
I love this. Everything about this. The cartoon version was already pretty balsy when it comes to content, but this takes it waaaaay further
Michael Arden has such incredible breath control.
Dude.
This song kills me EVERY BLOOMING TIME
I want a soundtrack for this show. This song is awesome and I would love to have this with me always, Thank you for uploading this. :)
Don't worry the cast recording of this show will be out in November
tara thelen Thank you. That made my day! What do you think of this version of the story? I have only seen the few clips on youtube, but it looks awesome.
The cast album is out now! And it's AMAZING
JFC this is just SO amazing. This feeling that you'll never be normal, you'll never fit in, you'll never be able to make the right choices or protect who you want to protect - is it better to just become numb to it all? "My one human eye will evermore be dry, until the day I die". Shut off your emotions, your soul, your person hood - and become stone.
man I nearly cried.
omg, the gargoyles in Disney makes so much sense now!!! Damn Disney did so well! !
The gargoyles in the movie are annoying and actually a a physical person. In the musical they are just in his head
@@docflights I interpreted it differently. I still think that the gargoyles talking to him is a manifestation of his loneliness, and that they don't actually move in real life. The "you don't want to hurt me" and "yes you do" part of the musical makes more sense with that in mind, if you consider that Quasimodo has repressed anger from all the years of abuse that he took quietly from Frollo. When Frollo sings about how Esmeralda was just temptation, Quasimodo's patience and kindness just snaps. Esmeralda was his whole world, even for just a few days. This leads him to confront Frollo and eventually hold him up the balcony. When the gargoyles say "yes you do", it's actually Quasimodo saying "yes I do". Or at least that's how I interpret it.
3:40 replay button for me
I absolutely love this line in the movie. The song is brilliant. Fantastic.
Am I the only one who desperately wants to hear Jeremy Jordan sing this song?
Gosh Michael’s voice is so good!
He’s got an amazing tenor voice and I LOVW IT
No Good Deed Goes Unpunished
Just dropping in to let everyone now that we released the first complete recording of the stage version this December just gone!
this is super emotive! quasi’s voice is so nice to hear. this song it’s so epic!
I wish this show got the Berlin treatment, with the gigantic orchestrations, like the strings for "Wie Aus Stein" takes this song to a new level. But I will concede that Michael Arden alone almost makes up for that. Would love to see him and Drew duet a song from Der Glockner/Hunchback.
I honestly can’t imagine Tom Hulce being able to pull off a performance like this…
Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz made The Hunchback of Notre Dame into a stage musical and Stephen Schwartz made The Prince of Egypt into a stage musical and Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz should also make Pocahontas into a stage musical!
They would be unlikely to do Pocahontas, because it is so different from the real story that there would be major protests unless they completely changed the story.
this would be awesome oon broadway
I know! So mad that FROZEN replaced it!!! Like it was either this or Frozen and Disney chose frozen. Like which actually teaches a lesson? Or at least a stronger one???
LostInTheMelody 3578 it was about to make it but u know how much money they had to give to every singer actor and those people on the back that no one cared
I never felt more like Quasimodo than I do now...
That's amazing! I watch and watch again and again, like I would make of stone too. Great job, great musical, wonderful songs. I'm sad because it wasn't go Broadway... But we'll see it there at the next revival (with Someday/Einmal and the classical chorus). #IPray #Einmal
help its been 2 weeks i cant stop watching this
Thank you so much for this!!! I was so disappointed when they were all removed!
+Stef Sears me too:( . I wish I saw the show as a whole too... Luckily there is a cast album coming soon:)
emmamuuusic Yes!! It's exciting! :D
+emmamuuusic there is a cd of the original cast. It's not live. It's in studio.
hkittner I know I preordered as soon as it was out haha:). I am a diehard fan of this verison. But thanks for letting me know anyway :)
hkittner Oh I misunderstood you a bit. I knew it was studio lol. live quality for a cd would be a bit scetchy
Honestly all my years of "theatre edict" would have gone out the window if I were there haha I would have absolutely lost it at that ending 😍
This is pure emotion
Thank you so much for uploading this and giving insight what they were actually trying to portray. I've looked up multiple reviews of the play and they all seem to think Quasimodo lived at the end or not specified. Thank you!
Quasimodo, you must try to free yourself!
The girl needs your help!
Quiet! Go away.
You're the only one who can save her now.
You know what happens when I try to help! I only make things worse.
You don't believe that!
How do you know what I believe?
What do you know of me?
What do you know of all the things I feel?
You're only made of stone.
Who is it that you see, instead of seeing what I am for real?
This twisted flesh and bone!
Quasimodo, it wasn't your fault!
You're a liar!
With every new excuse you try out, you only make me want to cry out.
Would that I were made of stone like you!
You don't mean that!
Just take some time to --
You give such good advice!
So why has not one single word you've said been any help at all?
Quasimodo!
And you who sound so nice,
The more your dreams and fancies fill my head,
The farther that I fall!
Shut my brain down!
If I was senseless, I'd prefer it!
Another gargoyle on this turret,
Spitting rain down to the stones below!
I've wasted my faith believing in saints of plaster,
But the only one worth believing in was my master!
He's the one who never lied.
He told me it was cruel outside,
He told me how I had to hide;
His words were cold as stone, but they were true.
Not like you.
Take all the dreams you've sown,
Take all your lies and leave me alone!
All right, Quasimodo, we'll leave you alone.
All right, Quasimodo, we'll trouble you no longer.
You're right, Quasimodo, we're only made of stone.
We just thought that you were made of something stronger.
And now I'm on my own,
Never again to wonder what's out there.
Let it remain unknown!
And my one human eye
Will ever more be dry
Until the day I die,
As if I
Were made of stone!
Michael os definitely my favorite actor
this song hits a whole different level, when you just one step away from giving up. Really seal the deal -_-
Man, Michael's voice is phenomenal! My classmate really needs to hear him sing more aside from his directing skills.
Were only made of stone We just thought you were made of something stronger that really is powerful and the way they sing it just makes it have a even bigger meaning it gets you everytime you hear it
What a musician!!!!
His resonance is insanse
okay seriously can esmeralda and phoebus stop making out in front of quasi every chance they get its actually kind of annoying at this point
ME
Ikrrrrr poor quasi
Thank you so much for having this! I was devastated when it was taken down.
Chills! I get goosebumps. I feel the song like you don't know what to do and what to believe anymore.
This song is so heartbreaking
I love this version, I seen the Disney movie. And this is one of the Best musical that I seen.
I love this musical
This reminds me of Aida, the last sexy Disney stage musical.
OH MY GOOOOOODDD!!!! I GOT CHILLLLLSS!!!! WHAT A VOICEEE! :O!!!!!
Thank you ! I missed having this to watch so much? Isn't Michael awesome?!
This ending is much more powerful. The option up on the last note is obnoxious, and too weak.
I agree, unless it could be belted in full voice!!!
disagree. drew Sarich crescendo on high c from a soft falsetto to a forte mix is a thing beauty and chills
+Louis Fenney Michael's understudy, Julian, did a belted high C. Sounded great, but not as great as the crescendo version from the Berlin recording
+Garrett Gopen Julian didn't belt it, that guy was like legit high classical tenor.
+Louis Fenney Agreed thats why I belt it :) MUCH more powerful
I was in Love after "As if Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii".... This voice is wow... unbelievably
It's is a general crime that this isn't on Broadway or the West End
This is unbelievable 😭🥺😩😰 Phenomenal is an understatement
Who ever thought that taking off a poncho could be so powerful?
OMG amazing.
His voice is so beautiful! I would love to see a female try this. But still this is incredible, the lyrics are so meaningful.
Phoebe Jackson I'm going to attempt to train my voice to hit those notes. Take choir classes and then perform. I'll let you know when I can actually do it.
Hands down the best Quasimodo on stage in history. The runner-up would be Milan von waardenburg
WOW............ that is Phenomenal! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
good one!
3:42 is roughly when the climax begins. just because that’s the only reason we’re here
Compared to the studio recording in 2016, Michael Arden sounds more angry here than he did on there, where he sounds more sad.
So, you think you can upload Bells of Notre Dame? I really want to see the beginning of the show!
Love this alternate ending!
what do you mean?
