@@TheReflectedOne You're welcome! When you get that shading issue is usually two things. Either Normals ( reset normals ) or smoothing groups. Convert it to Editable Poly > Select Element > Smoothing Groups > Clear all.
@@lilithjones9139 lilith, thank you so much for the information you provided here. and that's totally right. but in this case the problem is not about the smoothing groups. because we have a plane with different vertex positions and it's a polygon with more that 4 sides; we have the problem here. so you can either use a slice plane (which will automatically create a straight polygon related to our gizmo) or select the polygon and then in "edit geometry" tab> click on "Z" .
@@JuanGomez-op7cw Hello, Juan! I'm really glad you brought this up again, so I’ve attached the project file so you can test and try different methods on the actual model from the tutorial. and by the way, what a poor sound quality I had back then :D Project file: thereflectedone.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Extrude-fix_Project-file.zip
Well done to find that solution. I managed to extrude them but didn't record the steps to do it, but it make sense, as these applications work based on a reference plane. However, seems they missed to create references planes for projected lines. Thank you, it saved me a lot of time.
hi farida.did you attached your spline to a new shape like rectangle? when you create spline in so many direction like i did in the video, your vertices have different "Normals". so the extrude doesn't know which direction it should be extruded! but when you create a rectangle, all its vertices have the same Normal or "direction" by attaching the spline to the rectangle the spline now have the same normal as rectangle.
Thank you for explaining that! When I create a rectangle from a line, and convert it to poly, the shapes gets a lot of additional vertexes. I haven't had this problem before and I don't know how to turn this off. Do you have any idea?
thank you. here you can do this as well: create a rectangle with AutoGrid "on" attach the spline to rectangle. add a Edit poly modifier. the spline converts to poly grab the polygon and in "Edit Geometry" tab click on "Z" to align all vertices to Z axis. cheers.
thank you James Draw the line from an orthographic view for example top view. if you need to turn on snaps, turn the "2.5D" snap not "3"! check this and tell us the results. cheers.

thank you for mentioning Lilith.
can you explain more? clearing smoothing group for which part? the slice?

This is exactly what I was looking for all over the internet. Thanks for sharing
happy to hear that bro :)
10 years of working with 3dmax modeling, and finally this mystery is busted. Your video just split my experience to 'before & after' TNKS!!!
Wow! So happy to hear that!
me too!

im so glad it helped you buddy. yeah...agreed ! reference plane should be huge help!!
12 yrs of workarounds. Thank you! Why Autodesk doesn't make a straightforward solution to this is beyond me.
yes! there should be an exact command for this one.
Never would've figured it out on my own. Thank you!
I'm glad you found it helpful .
Creating a new spline and attaching to my model really fixed a spline object disappearing after turning it to editable poly. Thanks!
I'm Happy the old trick still works!
Nice !! Thanks from Portugal....
My salute to your great player Luis Figo
great video. so practical! thanks
Glad it was helpful!
thanks, exactly what i was looking for.
Thank you.im glad it was helpful
Thanks for the tut,any newer solutions?
You save my day, thanks!!!!
happy to hear that Michel :)
this is still helps mate thank you!!
Happy to help. Thanks
Greta vid man ! Thx
Thank you .
but why the shape dissapeared when i cliced extrude although it's spline ? please answer
hi farida.did you attached your spline to a new shape like rectangle?
when you create spline in so many direction like i did in the video, your vertices have different "Normals".
so the extrude doesn't know which direction it should be extruded!
but when you create a rectangle, all its vertices have the same Normal or "direction"
by attaching the spline to the rectangle the spline now have the same normal as rectangle.
thank you so much it was very helpful!
thank you! always happy to help
My editable poly cushion is not visible in render.. may I know why?
i need to know more about your problem
is it renderable in object properties tab?
is it visible to camera in object properties tab?
Thank you so much! solved it.
Very nice! Happy to hear that!
Broooo!!!!!!! Me salvaste la vida, en serio!!!!!!!!! Graaaaciasssssssss!!!
Subscrito!
Thanks, dude. glad it helped :)

you mean draw a rectangle and it has unwanted vertices ?
or
you grab the edges of you objects and "create shape" from it ?
OMG I LOVE YOU THANK YOU SO MUCH
THANK YOU Garrett .ALWAYS HAPPY TO HELP.
thank you so much!
appreciate it
Thanks a lot, I was looking for that! But still, how convert spline to poly without disappearing and without extruding?
thank you.
here you can do this as well:
create a rectangle with AutoGrid "on"
attach the spline to rectangle.
add a Edit poly modifier.
the spline converts to poly
grab the polygon and in "Edit Geometry" tab click on "Z" to align all vertices to Z axis.
cheers.
thank you really helpful
Glad you've found it helpful. Thanks for the feedback.
How did you draw in the surface of the stairs?
vertex snap is enabled .

Great tutorial, could you please advise how to add a single line at each step ( so that later we can use Railclone to add chairs), thanks a lot
thank you James
