It looks as if you could use a few French drains, a trench lined with a Geo fabric, to stop soil ingress, then a perforated pipe and clean stone before some top layer either stones for the drive or soil for the garden. If you imagine a leaf the veins are a good plan. I’m not sure how the budget would stretch but a well drained site is easiest to keep clean.

Staying off screens is so critical to our children’s development and you are amazing parents! Be safe on the barn roof and wall reno, and consider using a hard hat!
Speaking as a roofer, you need to remove the old Slate. In the process you should save as many as possible and in turn you will lighten the load on the rotting wood. Yes it's very unstable but you have to do it sooner or later. That's a big process for one man although I believe you can handle it. That building needs to be totally refurbished and brought back to it's glory. I don't think you are doing the wrong thing by bracing that end of the barn. Please be careful because your family needs you. You definitely need to restore the barn completely from top to bottom and inside & out. If you do it the right way, your grand children will be able to raise their children in a hundred years from now. Watching from Panama City Florida, USA. 🇺🇸🦅 !

You are a good handyman, Phillipe, working hard and little by little your dream farm is coming together with a sweet little helper Odin and Anisia! At that time water is a trouble to get it out of the building and living outdoors! But water is such a precious commodity and it is a blessing to have it on the farm land. Hey Phillipe, my girlfriend brought up your channel and since x-mas we are following your progress. Wirh your current project at the barn walls i am a little concerned about your telescopic support (props) at the end of the big oak beam. As far as I know the best load capacity is 20 kn (2 tons) for a new one. The one that you are using in the video has maybe more like 1600-1800kg. The oak beam looks like a cross section of 0,5mx0,4m at a length of 8m for us. This means the half of it must be at least 600kg weight on the props in case the wall brakes. But on top of it (for now) is laying half the construction of the roof including the tiles right now - this means as a rough estimate about 3-4 tons of weight. I really would recommend to use at least two props if not even three to distribute the weight in case of your wall collapsing. Stay save and warm regards from germany😊
Hello, you are absolutely right. I have one more left that i was going to put under the big oak beam. But if all goes well in 2 weeks the tiles will be coming off to renovate the whole roof.
Usually when old walls are starting to move outwards as you mention here in the olf barn, you may install a steel bar with the famous X or S shape screw on the outside. I'm pretty sure you've seen them all around in the countryside to sustain old barns and houses. Then you are insured the walls won't move anymore and stay in place. Good luck with this restoration project.

Hello Philippe, I just want to pass on that in North America, we call acros, jack posts. We laughed out loud when Odin was doing his thing in the puddles. Kids and water! 🙂 Have a good week! Bryan
In regards to you drive way, here is what I would do: I would dig the whole area about 15 cm deep, then get 8-10 cm gravel fill the area with that. After cover it with a high quality anti weed mat. Then you go with normal 1 cm gravel on top of that. This should give Ampel drainage and keep that drive way functional for many years to come. Now concerning the fish ponds: It is highly recommended to make them rectangular not round. The reason for that, are the cormorants, you will have to cover the ponds with netting, otherwise you will only feed the cormorants!😉 Wishing you and your family a belated happy 2025, cheers from🇨🇦
@ thank you for responding 😄 kind a, lol, the fish I used to have, were in an aquarium. But I had a friend with a small trout farm years ago. What made me truly aware of the problem however was Jeremy Clarkson (top gear and later Clarkson’s farm) and his fish raising disaster due to heron’s, plus the endless complaining anglers on the lake in front of my acreage.🐟
Thank you for another wonderful video🙏 I look forward to your videos every week. It's my down time to sit and relax and not interrupted. Now this is reality TV ❤️ may God bless your family and all the animals. Missed Lucy 😺
Bonjour Anicia & Philippe. Thanks for giving us a glimpse of your life in France. Philippe, please wear fall-prevention gear when working off the ground. Best wishes from Austin, Texas!
Bravo Philippe pour l'auto dérision, des fois c'est nerveux on peut pas s'en empêcher ;= 😄 elles sont belles ces bâtisses en pierre du Périgord quand même, bravo à vous
Wow, I didn't realise just how bad that roof was. Seeing it from above gives you a much better idea of what is happening and placing the bracing is a lot more urgent than I expected. Getting the driveway sorted will make a huge difference as well, I know how it is to be walking muck in every winter, it's a constant battle. I also made a boot scraper and mounted yardbroom heads in a v shape to help brush your boots off before the door, it helps.👍
We should look into a boot brush and also something to take your boots off without using your hands 😅 The barn roof is in a bad shape and so are the walls in that corner. February we should start work on the roof.
I so enjoy following your progress every week, watching little Odin grow, the chooks chasing the loader, the dog and cat wandering around. Dad’s energy, ingenuity and problem-solving skills are amazing. As are Mum’s IT skills. It was particularly nice, last week, watching the ice being scraped off the windscreen and all the frost on the ground - it was +42C here in Perth, Western Australia and the heatwave is still ongoing. Until next time, have a great week.
Philippe, can I suggest you dig a 60cm deep drain channel , then fill it with a load of the concrete rubble from the barn . Then cover with the stones you dig up from the driveway
Not to slowly, I think lime was used as a cement on these wall’s. Something needs to be done to stop the water ingress through the roof ASAP. Even if it is only temporary. ( If you drive through rural France, there collapsed buildings everywhere. Most of them collapsed because no one fixed the roof. (Children moved to the cities, parents died, children did not sell or maintain the building. Building collapses))
Phillip I understand that it's going to take a bit of time but I am so looking forward to seeing when you are able to get the Roof of the old Barn stabilized and I just want to say that I think that this is a beautiful property I am sure that you will be able to make it's full potential shine as time progresses 👍
Hij was weer leuk. Veel werke verzet en je had er weer mooi weer bij 😳 Wat een werk verzet jij niet normaal. Respect. En die kleine man is goud. Stay safe 👊🏻
You are a fantastic worker all the best with all the work you are doing and your family but you have to get someone to help you with some of the work out side
Thank you for sharing your adventures / projects. No project seems too difficult for you to tackle. Inspired by your planning and methodology to get things done. Good luck and I wish you well.
You must remove your topsoil as it is organic, and you need to get down to the clay before you can build a driveway on it. Otherwise you just end up with mud when it rains each time.
As usual great video, àm so happy for you all. You are a so hardworking couple with a wonderful boy. Odin is clever for his age with help from parents that take the time to help him, will pay off in future. Take care it is coming together. Norma uk.😂🎉
Hi Philippe and family - following you from Malta - well done and keep up the good work, I look forward to your videos every Sunday afternoon May I give you a suggestion for your driveway and parking area? Since you are removing the top layer of soil and will probably eventually also remove a layer of gravel why don’t you put a layer of concrete instead of geotextile and gravel again. As for the parking area, you can do gravel, no problem but my opinion is that you have a nice concrete floor all around the house and garage areas. A layer of approximately 15cm with floor mesh will be enough for you If you put a layer of concrete you can make it slanting away from your house and garage in a way were you can direct the rain water and this will always be clean and dry or at least any water will be directed away quickly by its self. You can do this by installing a gutter system or you can do the design of the concrete before it hardens - you know what I mean, you are a plumber by trade and you can never stop water, you can only direct it away but at the same time make good use of it - Keeping in mind that all the rain water which falls on this area can be directed to the pond which you will eventually have. I apologise for interfering, I am just giving a suggestion and I do not know if legally you can do this on your property.
Hi guys!! Great to see you all again!! I so wish l could package up some of our hot weather and post it to you! It is in the mid 30C to 40C range. So hot so uncomfortable. This heat would dry your land out in quick time!! So much water so much mud no wonder you are over the conditions…. Odin is growing so fast!! He’s very alert l have noticed. He is very curious and just loves to explore. Maybe you should wait until Odin is a little older and he could help you in the barn!! lol. And looks very much like his mama! Sorry Phillipe!! Please be careful when using the scaffolding. A very dangerous piece of equipment! Perhaps you should be wearing a harness just in case of some mishap?!! Thankyou for another great video! You look to have all your plans ready for the renovation of the barn. Take care. Keep as warm as you can. Big hugs for you all. Di.
Hey Di, the good weather will come! It is not like last year that was totally over the top but the ground is still saturated from that so every time it rains it does come running down. Odin is advancing quick now mentally and physically!
Great video and explanations. It may be obvious but if you could fix gutters and down pipes on barn, even temporarily, it would help with water problem. Here in SE England we have same problems only I don’t have your digger skills😆 Good luck
Seeing you up there I get a much better idea of the scale of that barn, it's huge. That beam you are standing on too, wow. I'm not surprised by Odin heading straight to the puddles lol, what do you expect from a little boy. It looks like he's also wanting to help daddy out already.😂❤️
for the failing wall, could you buttress it temporarily (like cathedrals did to support very tall walls) until you can either replace it or re-work it to be more stable. Also with the buttresses (if you used the same style of expanding post) could you push the wall back to where it belongs, and then reinforce it somehow. Great videos, keep up the good work!
Philippe is very brave! The old barn has a lot of structural problems and he’s doing his best to make it safe to work in but nobody can predict whether his efforts will be successful. I’m looking forward to seeing it renovated because I think it will be beautiful and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it all goes to plan❤
Looking like you need some digging out and under pinning of the sinking corner. A structural engineers report and solution would be handy. Please never get rid of all the water as it's a joy watching Odin play, he melts my heart with - Mama ,Papa 🙂
I will get a local bricklayer to look at the state of the walls to get his opinion. These old walls are made out of big stones either side of the walls and rubble in the middle so i think sometimes it might seem bad but maybe it isn't. Fingers crossed!
Appreciate the plan. Like some others on here, wish you would wear hard hats when doing construction--at least on the old buildings and at least Phillipe usually wear eye protection too for lots of things he does. The hats could have own decoration. Thanks for videos showing all your hard work has accomplish and the joy the the family obviously has making your home in your family personality! Best wishes each and every day.
Hi Philippe. Looking at the roof beam and wall scenario; I wonder if there may be a possible solution to raise the sunken roof? You would need to form a view about the weight of the roof section to be raised: weigh one tile and multiply it be the approximate quantity in place, weigh a measured an already section of each sized timber and do the maths over the remaining timbers still installed. see what you come up with? There are Hydraulic or air bottle jacks with capacities up to 75 tons available without getting into mining equipment specifications and cost. For instance you can easily get 50 ton units for 150 UK £ that can lift up to 480mm (more if blocked beneath!). You could acquire some chunky H section steel girder(s) to act as a prop with cradles made to accommodate the horizontal timber beams when lifted and also as strapped "sister beams" strapped beneath the 2 those wooden beams whilst jackking and remaining in place until ready to remove. I know that at some point the roof needs to be re tiled and sorted but this way, you would be able to repair the walls first, leaving some roof cover in place and then you can install wall plates ahead of setting the roof back down. Eg quoted was from SGS Engineering UK website. Just a seed to think about?
Hello, Good morning Young King ODIN and Bravo for your reading of the marteau piqueur.!!!! The mobil scaffolding has a limit load i think???and had a small plastic to protect the beam from roof water.!!! At T.C. : 28.11mnt , I will add one boom (chandelle de chantier) under the beam but at the iddle of its lenght in order to transfert the power to the ground and by that ease the beam.??? bon courage and stay safe.
What you are going to be making with the driveway is (sort of) a Macadam road. I did it with our parking space in front of our house. We have a very normal house, but I have never been to fond of boring brick parking lots. What I did was use bigger sea stones, then a layer of smaller stones, and then I washed dirt into it, meaning… laying dirt on top and using the garden hose and a lot of water to wash it down. Then grass. In my opinion a very beautiful driveway, and I have not done a thing to it in 12 years.
That is a bit what happened here naturally but when it rains everything becomes a muddy mess cause we drive too much on it, so we will have to go for bare rock. There is another solution and that is with tiles designed to let grass grow through but seeing the size of our driveway it is just too expensive.
Great idea, scraping the top surface down to gravel. Lego flowers!! My wife loves them and gets a new one each christmas. Barns always have problems. Ours used lots of helpcoil rods to the walls together. Look forward to next vid.
Hello Anicia, Philipe and Odin, Welcome to mudville, lol. I look forward to seeing your progress every Sunday. Work fascinates me, I could watch it for hours. lol
Thwaites, first machine sighted was yours in France, second one just like it has been helping other machines on a Sydney beach, returning sand down towards the water’s edge, and levelling the beach. Enormous winds a week ago, and it’s taking time to get the sand from the carpark, down to the beach promenade, from the promenade, back down on to the beach.
+26:20 Shiite! that camera angle really showed how bad it is - I hadn't fully realised. And that's just the rafters. Are Acro Props sufficient ? Or perhaps build a large metal/wood temporary? internal frame structure ? Now I understand why you haven't completed the car park entrance 😱
That is the result of letting water run through the foundations for years and years causing the walls to sink/collapse and then the A frame of that part of the roof was compromised so the roof is pushing the walls outwards 🫣The Acro props are better then doing nothing and soon we will be taking off the roof tiles so then they will be sufficient to hold up the remaining roof structure. That corner is really bad so i don't like driving there too much 🤣
Nice work, Philippe. It looks like the ground in front of the old barn door could use a slight but consistent grade down toward the valley. Love the videos!
My hubby says you should have a safety harnesses Philleppe, so lovely to hear Odin speaking different languages, he is coming on beautiful ❤

Sounds like you have personal knowledge of protecting fish.
I always look forward to your videos. You and your lovely talented wife and of course any shots of Odin.
Thank you very much!
I have fall protection for on the roof but with small heights it would not trigger it.
@@DomaineSauvage 👍
@@DomaineSauvageyou need a boot jack. You can get them with brushes either side too!
Drains are coming when better weather comes.
Like any challenge, just take your time figuring out that roof first. Go slow but stay steady.
Enjoy your time with your wife and son ❤ 🇨🇦 thank you.
Odin seems to enjoy the water and mud! ❤
The drawing was cute! Also, I love your lego bouquet 💐
Yes the lego!!!
Thx! 🤗
Phillip I understand that it's going to take a bit of time but I am so looking forward to seeing when you are able to get the Roof of the old Barn stabilized and I just want to say that I think that this is a beautiful property I am sure that you will be able to make it's full potential shine as time progresses 👍
Great progress, look forward to every new episode, keep up the good work.
Thanks, will do!
It’s fun to watch Odin playing in the water. What a lot of work your are doing . I see you enjoy making Lego
Hij was weer leuk. Veel werke verzet en je had er weer mooi weer bij 😳 Wat een werk verzet jij niet normaal. Respect. En die kleine man is goud. Stay safe 👊🏻
Very difficult job in the barn i would like to see you get some help
Best if luck to you
You are a fantastic worker all the best with all the work you are doing and your family but you have to get someone to help you with some of the work out side
Thomas, someone will be helping with the roof!
Thank you for sharing your adventures / projects. No project seems too difficult for you to tackle. Inspired by your planning and methodology to get things done. Good luck and I wish you well.
kids and puddles....loads of fun....mucky but magic😊
The simplest things bring them joy!
Hi Philipe when you said, as you can see you are making more mud I had to laugh 👍
Oh yes i made more mess 🤣
You must remove your topsoil as it is organic, and you need to get down to the clay before you can build a driveway on it. Otherwise you just end up with mud when it rains each time.
Oh the joy to splash around without being told off! ❤
As usual great video, àm so happy for you all.
You are a so hardworking couple with a wonderful boy.
Odin is clever for his age with help from parents that take the time to help him, will pay off in future.
Take care it is coming together.
Norma uk.😂🎉
Thank you so much 🤗
Love this channel look forward to it every week .Little Odin makes me laugh he loves the puddles xxx
Thx Christine!
Good planning Philippe, for the structure and the scaffold!!
Thx!
Hi Philippe and family - following you from Malta - well done and keep up the good work, I look forward to your videos every Sunday afternoon
May I give you a suggestion for your driveway and parking area?
Since you are removing the top layer of soil and will probably eventually also remove a layer of gravel why don’t you put a layer of concrete instead of geotextile and gravel again.
As for the parking area, you can do gravel, no problem but my opinion is that you have a nice concrete floor all around the house and garage areas.
A layer of approximately 15cm with floor mesh will be enough for you
If you put a layer of concrete you can make it slanting away from your house and garage in a way were you can direct the rain water and this will always be clean and dry or at least any water will be directed away quickly by its self.
Gutters coming when we take off the barn roof soon 😎
Seeing you up there I get a much better idea of the scale of that barn, it's huge. That beam you are standing on too, wow. I'm not surprised by Odin heading straight to the puddles lol, what do you expect from a little boy. It looks like he's also wanting to help daddy out already.😂❤️
The barn roof is 400m2 🤣
I love that barn ! I hope that you can somehow safe it. Have a wonderful week. ❤😊
for the failing wall, could you buttress it temporarily (like cathedrals did to support very tall walls) until you can either replace it or re-work it to be more stable. Also with the buttresses (if you used the same style of expanding post) could you push the wall back to where it belongs, and then reinforce it somehow. Great videos, keep up the good work!
Love the concept drawing of the barn. Will be worth the wait!
Us too!
Thx, Soon we will start working on the barn roof. It is the only thing around here that is as urgent as the water coming down.
I love how your dog stands guard, ready to give any assistance it can. Meanwhile the chickens keep your work area grub free.
Perfect for a cozy sunday with coffee and cake ♥️🌞
Enjoy!
Stay safe!!
We will!
Hello,
Good morning Young King ODIN and Bravo for your reading of the marteau piqueur.!!!!
Hello Jean-Marie, i have one long one left which i can put a little bit further. I will have a look this week to put it in place.
Very good job beginning to stabilize your barn. Please be careful as you work up there. Have a good week!
Thanks, you too!
Thx Jim! We will see what we do with the walls!
Great progress
Thx!
Love those old huge barn beams! Getting rid of the mud will be very rewarding and a big project but one worth the hard work
Hello Anicia, Philipe and Odin, Welcome to mudville, lol. I look forward to seeing your progress every Sunday. Work fascinates me, I could watch it for hours. lol
Thx George!
Definitely need to invest in a viseuse à choc for screwing in old beams, your shoulder will thank you 😅
I actually have one, i just forget about it 😂
Here's to the victories! 🎉
Sunday morning here in Pennsylvania. Relaxing..drinking my coffee and watching your video!!
I enjoy you explains why you do what you do!!
Thx Wendy!
Thank you so much for sharing the experience of your lives as you go through the process trying to renovate, establishing in the community.
Yep that is one of the problems that it is sloped like a little pond now 🤣
