So different from working cattle. Bison are not domesticated and I admire you all for focusing on Bison. I hope more ranchers will focus on bison. They look so natural on the land. This is their environment and although they are no longer free to roam as is their nature, seems you offer them plenty of space and are managing your herds with respect, dedication, and quality care. Thank you for sharing your ranch life with us.

Thank you for inviting us along. I grew up on a farm that had registered black angus that were sold all over the US. they were also one of the first herds to have red angus. We worked them once a year and I kept the records while helping to work them. I haven’t been on that farm for over 40 years. Thank you for bringing back a lot of very good memories. Wishing I was there to help you guys.

Working "Big Joe" is like the Standoff at the OK Corral!. Such a magnificent animal but you have to be 150% vigilant around him. I bet working him is a "Super Size" of adrenalin!

Okay, I’ve got it, a new song!
“A guy in college surviving on Ramen, just barely gettin’ by is like Dunbar in breeding season giving all the bison girls a try.
The fans all wonder what did Big Joe weigh, Workin’ bison down at Sulphur on a sunny fall day. Calves going for the wean, Dunbar’s a little more lean, Joe’s still not digging’ the scene, workin’ bison down at Sulphur on a sunny fall day.”
It needs to be tweaked a bit but with Daniel warbling out Home on the Range in the background, I think we’d have a hit, whatay’all think?

All your hard work on the corrals, laneway and tub paid off! You did an amazing job. I have found every time you work big animals you will find little things that need to be changed or improved on. Then pretty soon everything will be in place and it’s only up to the animals, which you can’t always control. Great job to everyone involved!! Now take a well deserved break and rest and thanks for bringing us all on your bison journey!

Wonder if they’d eat cubes as a reward (for some positive association) when they’re in the sections? Either put the cubes on the floor or give by hand when they’re in there? They might not notice them or eat them, but even the scent of them might work. Use as a lure aid and/or a reward. Dunno. Bison are smart enough to form associations. Just a thought. Edit: I wrote before seeing the very end, feeding the grain. Love these vids. Thanks! 😎👍

I thought about maybe using a Big Easy E for the bulls when they run them through for practice, give them something to chew on and maybe Dunbar won't balk at the dewormer. 😁

@@takumi2023 I don’t know anything about bison whatsoever but I been watching big Joe for the last hour. I’m wondering why they don’t get use to this. They go crazy every time. I wonder if this happened more often if they would calm the hell down. My heart is racing in every video and I can’t stop watching lol. At first I was like aww how cute. Even wondered if you could pet it. After seeing big Joe in action I wouldn’t step foot around a bison. Beautiful creatures though 🦬

Great video. I noticed quite a few were not happy in the squeeze chute. Dunbar had to show himself by being contrary. Horns and legs going every which way, going down on their knees. And then along comes, Joe. Big Tough Joe. Stare-Down Joe. Other than being contrary, he was convinced by Kitt. Quiet in the chute. Marissa, you were amazing. Loved seeing you put in the tags and loved seeing you get Big Joe off the fence with the paddle. Major difference from last year when Big Joe came up on the rails. Holy Jeese! Dusty, you and Kevin must have springs instead of legs to be able to jump that huge fence the way you did so quick! That was a pretty tense moment to watch. I think you may be on to a possibly lucrative new business renting out Big Joe to the Olympic high jump team for incentive to make their jumps. All they need to do is make their jumps solid fence and I'm sure that there would be some new world records for the high jump coming out of that. I wanted to be there to count your and Kevin's legs to make sure you still had 2 after Big Joe made an attempt to remove them a couple of times. Exciting to watch but not the kind of work for the not so nimble or not so brave! Well done handling these critters. In the tub Big Joe clipped the cow that was with him in the nose with his horn as well I think and that seems to have given her a bloody nose as well as Dunbar I'm certainly glad those horns didn't connect with Dusty or Kevin during this.

I have a friend who raises Registered goat, sheep & mid-line cows.
Dunbar calves vs Big Joe's calves.
NEXT: SHE PURPOSELY USES a full moon to breed. The results were more heifers than bulls. Your ability to control breeding because of danger, but IF you noticed calenders, moons, breeding and results, it would be interesting.
      1. Could you turn the bull in with the cows ONLY during full moon? Wouldn't that fact & result be interesting?
I enjoy your Ranch sooo much.
I stick with the suggestion of RIGHT Ear tags on females. I also think WORKING with LESS GATE. TUB & CHUTE NOISE made your FALL working less stressful. Cube Treats for bulls helped your experience with them easier this Fall.
      1. They respond to your calls
      2. Know treats follow spraying or cockle burr picking.
      3. Please MASK during chemical Sprays & Powders in "wallows."
Do your new "digs" have ponds?
I thought I heard that in the lst NEW RANCH VIDEO. Patty

An exciting day. You and your crew came through without serious injury and the bison, except Flo (was it Flo) were unharmed, at least it appears so. Everybody will have some sore muscles or bumps or bruises they didn't know they got. Kind of like a football game, you win and you're pumped up and feel great until you wake up the next morning and everything hurts, eh.
Well done. Each time you learn a bit more. Enjoy it while you can. Keep yourself fit and eat healthy, get rest and stay right with whatever you believe and you will be able to enjoy this well into your senior years. Good luck. You are doing a good thing for mankind. After all, the Good Book says we have responsibility for the animals. I know the word is dominion over but what it means is responsibility for. You take your responsibility seriously. This is commendable and I thank you for the work and concern you show for all earth's creatures. You are one of the good people. Thank you for sharing with the rest of us.
Continue to be watchful and careful and never get distracted. These are big powerful animals and even the little ones can do damage if something spooks them. I will pray for good health for all of you and your animals.
    Live long and prosper.

I never realized just how dangerous it was working with bison. I was helping a friend with his cows and he left me in the field saying watch out for the bison with the earrings. No sooner had he driven over a hill than who is coming at me with a bison on either side of her and all three were pawing the ground. I knew the only way I was going over the fence was if they hit me. I took off my jacket and waved it in front of the bison then tossed it on a fence posts and not looking at them I made my way into the herd of cows. when I finally was able to get my jacket it was covered in bison snot. There is no way I would have been in that field if I knew then just how powerful and dangerous they could be. Glad to see you all were safe.

Great day working the herd! I raised Texas Longhorns and we could only show them with halters for some stupid reason. I've been drug, stomped, and kicked. We thought we were working hard just staying away from the horns, but it was no way close to what you do with the Bison. We always got the young ones halter broke and into the show ring , but it came at a price. Quite a workout for sure. Again you guys...and wife....did a great job!

They use tactics that are absolutely cruel, unnecessary and increases danger to themselves as well as to the animals.
.....and did you see him hooking him up the nose??
Their tactics are unnecessary and sometimes cruel to these animals ....this is a downright shame !
.... probably gets them more views though.

You got em worked but at what cost?
Too many people makes the animals skittish, 3 is a good number of hands. You can't have heads or people standing in the direction you want the animals to go.
You should sort off the calves or small animals from the larger ones, use a simple left or right sorting gate with 2 open corrals, never run calves into the crowding pens with the adults.
From the sorting pens it should flow smoothly into the crowding pen, then into the tub, after that it should be a straight shot down the alley to the squeeze chute. A shallow curved alley is ok, but the 90° turn will cause animals to balk and even get turned around. They will freely move forward where they can openly see.
You should rethink your pens and alley system to let your bison do the work for you, it's less tiring and safer for you and the buffalo.
    A happy buffalo makes a happy rancher. 🦬 🤠

I had a friend who ran cattle, he would occasionally leave the head gate open on the squeeze and run his calves through to get them used to going through the pens and the squeeze. A few times through, done at various times of the year and they began to acclimate. they learned to know how to go through the pens and the squeeze. This made them a lot easier to get through, and lessened the occurrence of injuries. Every time an animal is handled they are being condition to act a certain way. I think your first pen before the tub is a lot of the problem. If like you say it was smaller, perhaps it would help to calm things down a bit.

Temple Grandin's techniques might be helpful. Creating curved corners instead if sharp corners actually makes things go so much smoother when trying to move large herd oriented ungulates.

From wotking a stockyard, if there are gates in the alley with alternative hing side, makes the handler walk in a z but keeps him behind a gate with no openings, should cut the spinning down a lot

They are kept close in a small (for bison) range, not the huge expanses for which they are adapted. Would rather have healthy bison than feverish ones. Not all shots are bad. They worm and do necessary shots, no growth hormones

I want to thank you for doing what you do. Bison were hunted to near extinction to deprive the First Nations of their primary food source. You are bringing a vital animal back. It's VERY hard work. It DEMANDS a person with deep compassion and hard conviction. From watching your videos, I believe you are doing your best by your animals. I wish you my blessings and those of all the powers that be whatever those powers may be.

We acquired a small herd of really wild beef cattle. Two of them needed daily wound treatments. The first three times through the shoots was a nightmare but we put the whole group through and each one got a pan of grain (which they desperately needed). The fourth time a fight broke out over who was going first. NEVER had a problem with those cows again. They could be in the far end of the pasture but when they heard the gates open they came running.

I am truly worried about you as HE successfully TREED each one of you & it was a serious action on his part.
Your runs are way too wide. The tub too roomy. I'm sure you know that after visiting numerous bison farms. I know all of these "ranches, animals, fencing, "working area, feed, water systems, barns, equipment" are terribly expensive. You LOVE every animal you have. It shows in your treatment. It's revealed in the "space, room of alleys, the tub etc." Please remodel these things that make yourself & family safe. THEY CANNOT travel 2 wide or turn around. Your wife & family love you. ❤️ please be safe. I really care.

To all the boys who stepped up for the first time, what an experience, well done. And to those guys there for the encore, a well oiled team, (Kevin is a gem). VERY MUCH enjoyed watching. Thank you
