Moose up here in Canada do the same. It's called "rut". They dig a shallow pit, pee in it and roll in it. All part of the process of mating. Men do it too but they use Axe cologne instead.

Many years ago Mother Nature gifted me. I was dry camping in a South Dakota prairie, 5 of us head to toe in a 2 man tent. I woke up to snorting. I carefully unzipped the tent & saw bison legs and feet all around. I woke no one, but let them graze and snort in peace for over an hour til they moved on. It was a gift that I will not soon forget.
Glad I found your family & your bisons. Peace.♡

@@lorriwelling2495, there was an imense storm the night before and I sat beside a little scrub tree being very still, watching the lightning,
feeling the thunder down to my soul and being drenched.
      It was beautiful.
And to have bison snorts, noses and hooves to wake up to the next morning
      Nothing can beat that.
Especially, now that there are videos and cell phones, I see what could have happened if disrespected their power in any way.
      Peace.♡ dee

There is something Majestic about Bisons. I first saw a Bison up close in 1998 in Rural Nevada. I pulled over my Truck to safety, got out and went to the fence to look at them closely. They were so peaceful and inquisitive. I had never seen an animal as beautiful as they are, carry all that weight and still manage to be as calm as they r large. The Brown dense coloring is just so rich and goes well with their Lava Like movements. Thank u for sharing this video with us, and one day maybe u can experience the Bisons of Gabbs, NV. Keep up the great work, hopefully I will see u in the Wind.

When Dunbar was rolling in the wallow, he reminded me of a toddler trying to do a somersault for the first time. They want to get all the way over, but they just don't have long enough legs yet to give themselves that push needed to complete it, haha. It's always exciting to know you will be getting some baby animals on the farm soon enough! I was surprised when I looked up their gestation period and learned it is basically the same as humans! I guess when an animal is that huge, I expected it to take longer than that to develop.
As for the curled upper lip, Goats curl their upper lip when they are smelling something because they have a gland on the roof of their mouth that helps them identify what they are smelling. The curled lip helps scent reach that gland. I have heard of other mammals doing this too. I guess Bison are one of them! Animal behaviour is so interesting!
    Thanks for sharing, Dusty.

My ex is a taxidermist. He did a behind the hump mount of an 18 year old herd bull which had gone sterile. Thus, the farmer was forced to put him down when he refused to give up his ladies. Due to the size of the pelt, it had to be washed in a 12 Jon boat. To remove the caked in mud, straw, and pee stench took many washings, but “Purvis” turned into a beautiful mount. This must be normal behavior, because Lord have mercy, he stank.

My grandfathers made the Run into the Cherokee Strip. Before the plow and bob wire “tamed” that wilderness, we could still see “buffalo wallers” in the pastures. Ruts from the Chisholm Trail were visible around Enid. We children went to a “one room schoolhouse” where in programs we gathered on the stage and sang “Home, Home on the Range”. What a page out of the American History!! Four of my husbands relatives are buried in Arlington Cemetary- having risen from that pioneer background to the Naval Hall of Fame. Their name was Soucek- you can research that information. Mary Soucek, Texas

Yes. In grade school we started every class day singing a couple patriotic songs and said The Pledge of Allegiance. I remember singing "Home on the Range", "Battle Hymn of the Republic", "Dixie", "Swanee River", and a train song I can't remember the name of, and a few others, while in 5th grade. LOL. Memories. In 7th grade in Choirs class. we learned "Green Sleeves". While we were singing our instructor walked around us listening closely to the boys. He kept changing me from bass to tenor and back. My voice was definitely changing. It didn't help. I still can't sing to this day 60+ years later.

Loved this! In a moose rut, the dominant bull digs a "rut pit", and urinates a huge stream into it. Cows, sometimes several of them, come around and caress his flanks with their heads, making little moans. They try to chase each other off, sometimes clocking each other with their front hooves. It's hilarious to watch. Thanks for the video!

Hey Dusty, I think that Dunbar was marking his waller and when BellStar came over and smelled it she accepted him. Maybe that his way of saying I'm ready, willing and able lol. 🤔💞😈🐂😯😉

How cool!!! I love how they understand you and touch you with their noses... as a cow, horse, or dog would do.

Ty for posting this video, I'm doing a presentation on bison and I couldn't find a video on a bison wallowing in his urine. Thank you for this! In case you didn't know already, it's called the Flehmen response where they curl their lip and take in the pheromones.

Thank you for the information. I never knew that about the buffalo. I have seen them in Yellowstone, but it wasn't the season for breeding. Be careful out there, they are so HUGE!

  • @PLS.54

Dunbar, like those in wild herds engage in this behavior during breeding season. It’s an aphrodisiac if you will, and Dunbar’s way of saying,”oh yeah... look at me, I’m the big guy here, you want this,” 😆

  • @Huntnlady7
    @Huntnlady7 4 роки тому +3

Bucks (deer) do this same thing. Dunbar is advertising his breeding condition. Good observation. Later you are describing the flehmen response- curling the upper lip, or wrinkling the nose in bison

I just saw an episode of NOVA last night showing that the male bison do this action when his females are in heat. It showed a male urinating in the "waller" and rolling in it. Eau de Bison!
