The best drum solo in my opinion is with Mick Tucker ( Sweet )- the man with the golden arm
Some of my more contemporary favorites:
Periphery - Erised
Mirrors - Rendezvous Point
The Pineapple Thief - White Mist
Storm Corrosion - Hag
That first rush song snippet at the beginning of the video isn't YYZ it's Tom Sawyer. Watchmojo sort your mistake out, it's offensive 😂
Hey watchmojo, do some more count down list regarding cars. Example : top 10 suv of all times, top 10 facts about taxi you didn't know, top 10 asian car brands, top 10 weirdest cars in the world, top 10 best pimp my ride cars etc.
Rest in peace, Neil Peart, you unforgettable legend. Your inspirational drumming lives on in so many people!
He will always be The Professor of Percussion!!!
@@triplechrizzy3649 just a matter of opinion that is what he has been called before. If not him then who do you think is the best or one of the best drummers who ever lived?
@@triplechrizzy3649 I’m pretty sure even if Bonham wasn’t drunk, he would have a hard time playing some of Neil Peart stuff. Neil made Rush fans proud, especially playing live. He really cared about the fans
@@stephenwebb921 seriously I had the privilege to see Rush 8 different times in concert. Every time was one I'll never forget! Especially when it came to Neil's drum solo. In the middle of it he would hit something and the other drum set would spin around and he would rock that out! I miss Neil Peart😔
It ain't easy being cheesy.
Now that's a bad way to start a video:
You play a clip from Tom Sawyer, but the tagline says YYZ...
I was LITERALLY about to type this out
what i was thinking 😂
You are correct, the credit should be Tom Sawyer, our editor made an innocent mistake. Thanks for being such sleuths and letting us know. It's greatly appreciated as we always work hard to not only avoid errors, but to own them and improve.
Honestly, I did not expect this kind of response, if any.
Good on you, Watchmojo.
@@WatchMojo It's also pronounced "Y" "Y" "Zed"
Stop talking woman, let them DRUM!!!
Exactly. Won’t let me listen to them by just yapping on like woman, no one cares.
What he said. Shut up woman!
Neil Peart is not truly dead. His spirit lives in through the new generation of drummers and his performances have been recorded and documented for all eternity. Here’s to the one and only legend that is Neil! 🥁

RIP Neil Peart. Rush will always be one of my favorite bands.
Other deserving solos:
-Santana “Soul Sacrifice” Mike Shrieve’s amazing work drives this song
-Sting “I Burn For You” Omar Hakim plays an AMAZING solo totally in the groove of the song
-Steely Dan “Aja” Steve Gadd comes into the studio cold and lays down this amazing drum track in TWO takes.
True, Aja should've made the cut.
I watched the Soul solo hundreds of times in the 80s, the toms still sound amazing and I can't roll on my snare without Mike popping up.
Exit...Stage Left solo by Peart is also a fav.

Does Regular Show Benson 150-piece kit drum solo count?
Pretty sure not one of these drummers skeleton caught on fire
Peart was a true genius. Whereas many drummers flail around while playing, he was the essence of cool, calm and collected. He is the reason why many of us picked up sticks in the first place.
I'm surprised that Steve Gadd's drumming on Steely Dan's Aja wasn't included.
Yes! That was my first thought about this video. Thanks for putting it into words. (In a Gada da Vida? Jeeze, that's so pedestrian, that it must have been included for fans that can't even count to four.)
Fo sho!!
I love the drum solo done by John Bonham in “Dazed & Confused”. It’s short but easily one of the finest.
Love Dazed and Confused so much.
In my opinion Neil Peart is the greatest of all time. I've never seen another drummer play the same intricate and difficult solos as Neil. Neil truly is "The Professor".
Neil Peart about Carl Palmer: "I will never be able to play as Carl Palmer".
@@damirhlobik6488 I think Carl was faster but I don't think he was necessarily an all around better drummer than Neil. I'm a big fan of both regardless though.
Ahhh yes, the solo from YYZ is the same as Tom Sawyer's
The group is called Rush :P Not YYZ :)
Wait i just realized they had it bad...
No they played tom Sawyer while labeling it as YYZ
I was like “wow I didn’t know those songs were so similar”
My favorite Van Halen drum solo on YYZ is Tom Sawyer on Rush
@@dhampirdp3489 no they didn’t?
One of my favourite drum solo's is Nick Mason from Pink Floyd playing One Of These Days live in Pompeii. Fantastic.
Yeeees
I think Nick Mason should have been included on this list.
He does some great little solos in Pink Floyd's music.
Love his drumming on A Saucerful of Secrets as well. Sounds like a human drum machine.
Not a drum solo. But One Of These Days in Pompeii is an absolute killer!
No drum solo in One Of These Days from Live In Pompeii.
Would help if they knew what "solo" meant...this is a mess.
Thank you, thank you.
What makes "YYZ" more amazing is, Neil Peart based the song off of the Morse Code. YYZ is an S.O.S. in Morse Code for planes, 'cause Peart also flew planes. Amazing that the entire songs was written based on the code itself.
This is so amazing. This makes me miss my dad who we lost last year. He was a drummer and idolized Neil Peart. I hope they are drumming together in the after life 💕
1. Ian Paice- The Mule (Made in Japan Version)
2. Peter Criss- 100,000years (Alive version)
3. Cozy Powell- Stargazer
Looking at the line-up from Led Zeppelin, hard to argue that they aren’t the Greatest if not Top 3 All Time in Rock.
I think they are top 3 but number 3. Gotta have Beatles at #1 and Rolling Stones #2. Zep is my personal favorite band though.
@@samtheman123 idk zeppelin deffo rules over the stones in fame sales and influence

Santana's Soul Sacrifice deserved at least an honorable mention :(
Facts
I came here to say that also. The Woodstock performance….
R.I.P Neil Peart
Neil Peart is my favorite drummer of all time, but I'm glad they included Ringo's solo in "The End." Simple, but effective.
Those parts of "YYZ" you showed are technically drum fills and not a solo.
You're not wrong.
Ironically the 1981 live version from Exit Stage Left did have a solo.
Yes, this edit is a mess from start to finish. Just way too much talking and horrible examples of each selection.
They don't even know the difference between a fill, a solo and a break
I really wish Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan was on here somewhere. He was absolutely amazing!
He didn’t even make it onto the list for Top 10 drummers that they made before. He only got an honorable mention which I find disgraceful.
He deserved top 3 for sure........shame he ain't on any of their lists for drummers
Yeah guys, The Rev was an absolute animal on the drums, especially for double bass players!
RIP foREVer
If the rev was still alive they’d give him a lot more credit
Neil Peart was the reason I started playing drums. R.I.P. to the greatest of all time.
Gene Krupa in American Patrol is iconic and amazing. I'm not sure if there is video but the song is one of Glenn Miller's best.
Well we all knew what number one would be. Rest in power Bonzo
I know right nobody can beat except for people who think Neil is better than him
No love for Alex Van Halen? Hot for Teacher and Fools are the best songs that showcase his incredible drumming skills!
Agree. 5150 & Girl Gone Bad are other great drum cuts!
Cool, but doesn’t deserve the list
You have no idea how pissed off I am that Hot for Teacher didn't even make an honorable mention
I’m sad you passed over Gene Krupa and the immortal «Sing, Sing, Sing». In my opinion, he deserved a rank of choice in your list.
Watch Mojo terrible criteria was “popular” and “rock”
@@nairbas392 They put Buddy's WSS solo in...
My top ten greatest drum solos of all time.
10. The end by the Beatles
9. Fire by the jimi hendrix experience
8. Toad by cream
7. Wipeout by the ventures
6. West side story medley by buddy rich.
5. Rat salad by black sabbath
4. Karn evil 9 by emerson lake and palmer.
3. Won't get fooled again by the who.
2. YYZ by rush.
1. Moby dick by led zeppelin.
Glad to see "in a gadda da vida" on the list, my personal favorite
Emerson Lake & Palmer, "Karn Evil 9." Case closed.
The live version is amazing but I wouldn’t way it would make it on a top 10 list if you included the album version. Instead replace it with Tank
“The Ventures” also created the theme music for “Hawaii 5-0”.
When they showed the Ventures doing Wipe out they mis identified the other drummer I believe. Just ask Bruce Springstein!
Does she ever stop talking so you can hear the solos or does she just love the sound of her own voice
Were they scared to show Neil Peart’s drum solo at Frankfurt?
Not even close to his best solo.. Look up 1988
All great choices, but feels like Gene Krupa's solo from "Sing, Sing, Sing" should have made the cut.
Absolutely!!!
Queen's "Dragon Attack" got a cool little drum solo.
One of These Days. Absolute perfection from Nick Mason. Especially the performance in Pompeii in 1972. Look it up, you won't be disappointed
Rush's "O Baterista", from their "Rush in Rio" DVD. I'm not a huge Rush fan, but what Neil did with all those drum kits (make jazz band and glockenspiel sound effects) was amazing and one of a kind. Drummers, do not try it at home... there'll never be another Neil Peart!
I know it’s tough doing a top 10 video like this, you can always leave so many “greats” out! But I’m so very thankful your #1 was Bonham, greatest groove drummer that ever lived and paved the way for so many! He’s the reason I wanted to play drums and pick up a pair of sticks!
Buddy Rich’s eight-minute solo at the end of “Channel One Suite.”
Jerry Marotta’s solo at the end of Peter Gabriel’s “Not One Of Us”.
“Frankenstein” needed to be much higher on the list.
I never expected Ringo Starr to be there. He absoluetly HATED drum solos, yet Paul was able to succesfully convince Ringo to do one.
I would add to honorable mentions the drum solo from Keep Yourself Alive from Queen.
John bonham, whole lotta love. Greatest drummer to ever live. 🐐🔥🔥🔥🔥. RIP.
I find your lack of mike portnoy's drumming disturbing
Indeed my friend it is disturbing and very disappointing
@@dredgenace1689 the deplorable state of top ten lists these days
True
@Dutchy i mean, between old dream theater, hisnoff shoot on a7x, his blues band, and sons of apollo, i feel he probably had a song to trump another on this list somewhere
Blame the people who actually vote on the polls on the site
Can’t believe you didn’t mention Take 5 by Dave Brubeck, drum solo by Joe Morello.
Ones not mentioned.
1. Skunk (Sonically Speaking) by MC5 pure drumming intensity sadly forgotten.
2. Frank Marino - Something's Coming Our Way. A virtuoso display of drumming and great guitat solos.
3. Rainbow - Stargazer. One of the greatest epic metal songs begins with a fantastic drum solo.
IAN PAICE should have been number one! Its amazing how he wasnt even mentioned at all! Check out his live performance of The Mule from the Made in Japan show, that solo was divine.
No he shouldn't
@@Miist3rDuce1 Ian Paice definitely deserves to be in the top 10. Paice is always incredibly overlooked and under-recognized.
Ian Paice will allways be My no1 drummer ever. Due to ability & endurance 💜💜
My Top picks would probable be the drum solo at the end of Caravan by John Wasson, Der Trommler and La Villa Strangiato by Rush.
RIP Neil. You will always be #1.....
Roger Taylor’s in Keep Yourself Alive.
I’m a drummer and a huge Van Halen fan, so I got to say Hot for Teacher as my favorite drum solo ever
Not the absolute best, but very memorable: The End by the Beatles. It's what came to mind immediately, before watching the video. I wish there was a version where it went on longer.
Looks like you guys made a drum solo list without any drummers giving an opinion. Outstanding. Lol
Who shouldn't be on this list?
@@dementedavenger2784 only ones that belong are Peart, Rich, Bonham, and Carey.
Hard to argue with that.
@@tylerreynolds3715 what about Buddy Rich? he should be number one
I want to give a special shoutout to Bonham.
Keeping in mind how simple and small his kit was to many drummers. Never mind he would do it without sticks.
My friend has been trying to 'master' YYZ for years now. I asked him to take a look at Moby Dick. I even brought him the sheet music. I swear his eye twitched before saying flat-out 'No' without another peep.
People may not jam to drum solos quite like a guitar solo. Though I've yet to meet a percussionist who will approach YYZ or Moby Dick lightly or with confidence.
#10. “Wait a minute... this sounds like rock and or roll.”
Ha!! Simpsons!
"Hey Marge, remember when we used to make out to this hymn?"
Top Ten Drum Solos: Starts the video with a drum fill.

Tusk by Fleetwood Mac should be mentioned!
"Neil Ellwood Peart"

"A Farewell to a King"👑
Honestly I'm surprised that Rainbow's Stargazer wasn't on here, that intro solo from Cozy Powell is absolutely insane
YES! THANK YOU! Took the words right outta my mowf.
A good list, a lot of damn good drummers with iconic solos in this.... Lars Ulrich still a shitty drummer in a famous band though.
Luckiest drummer ever
@@willthompson3573 It's not lucky when he has practically created the band on a silver plater, hence no one in the band can boot him out.
Lmao true
Moby Dick live solo is nuts. Feels like the ending scene of Whiplash
Michael Shrieve w Santana at Woodstock, soul sacrifice - whatever was good about that festival is right there - one of the few that goes on three minutes and still feels like there was not one second wasted
I had a feeling Led Zeppelin's Moby Dick would be #1. I remember seeing the Led Zeppelin cover band Zoso, with rest of the band leaving the stage during that solo, and some of the audience members doing air drums.
Congratulations, Watch Mojo! You FINALLY got one of these lists “partly” right!! This was Great!!!!!
Carl palmer
Karn Evil No.9
1st impression
Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends
The first clip with rush wasn't YYZ it was Tom Sawyer
Led Zeppelin is my literal favorite group of all time.. Having said that, Rat Salad imo is way better than Moby Dick, poor Bill Ward never gets the recognition he so rightfully deserves, he kills that song 🔥🤘
I think Moby Dick is better. John is using his whole set while Bill is mostly hitting the snare. Still a good solo though.
Bill Ward was the soul of Black Sabbath 🤟🏻
From a drummers perspective, it’s pretty dissapointing when they make a list of top 10 drum solos and majority of the picks are just drum breaks or drum fills....
i was thinking the same thing the whole time i watched this, classic watchmojo for ya
My favorite solo is of The Beatles the end
1:40 "dual solo"
if only there a word to describe this
"It's YY-zed..." Dr. Krieger
I would add something of Phil Collins, Chad Smith OR Dave Grohl.
I was just thinking that Chad's intro for Around the World should have at least be mentioned.
"Radar Love" - Golden Earring
Anyone?...
Caesar Zuiderwijk is an amazing rock drummer!
When The Lady Smiles
pretty badass of Buddy Rich on his not well known death bed!when he had a pre surgery question by his nurse asking ; "is there anything you can´t take?" asking about medical condition like reaction to opiods and such! He said "Yeah! Country Music!". He then had the surgery, but died of complications 1 day-2 after!
Neil Peart’s solo at frankfurter, definitely butchered that spelling, is the greatest thing I have ever seen
I will agree that Bill Ward is an extremely underrated drummer. His work on songs like Rat Salad or War Pigs is phenomenal when you consider the time that they were recorded. That’s about the only thing they got right on this.
Neil Peart is the master of rock drumming, period. As a guitarist for more than 40 years, I have worked with so many great drummers, both live and in studios. Every great drummer I ever worked with always claimed Peart as the most difficult to play and all of them admired his innovation.
No drummer wrote percussion as melodic as did Peart. He is one drummer whose work is so unique, that you can recognize any Rush song just by hearing the drums. His drumming was music. Geddy and Neil were so good, they were nearly a band by themselves, which is the reason they sound so full for a three piece band. That is why there was never a loss when Lifeson dripped out of rhythm for lead.
Rush concerts are the only concerts I have ever been to where more than half the audience were air-drumming to every song! I have never seen that for any other drummer. That’s because his fills are legendary and everyone knows them by heart.
John Bonham only tops these list because of popularity more than anything else. He was a great drummer no doubt, but the best? Not according to any drummers I’ve worked with. It’s the same reason Page is always claimed to be the best guitarist, Jones the best bassist and Plant the best singer, although Plant often takes second fiddle to Mercury, once again, because of popularity.
Led Zeppelin is probably one of the most popular and iconic hard rock bands ever, but that doesn’t make all of the musicians best at their instrument. The Beatles were also very popular, does that make George the best guitarist, Ringo the greatest drummer? It does to Watch Mojo, which is always a popularity contest rather than about skill. Taking any list by Watch Mojo seriously is equal to reading Rolling Stone Magazine to find a list of the best musicians.
If you want to know the best drummer, maybe Modern Drummer Magazine might be a more accurate list of rock drummers. Neil Peart won their poll so many years they had to retire him to their hall of a fame, just to give someone else a chance.
Moby Dick is a great drum solo but Carl Palmer's Tank is better, especially Ginger Baker's Toad!!!
But Lars chose bonzo over Neil
Both are legendary and iconic though
Also i would say Eddie Van Halen is greatest guitarist and Mercury is greatest frontman
But John bohnam is greatest according to many
Neil is legend too no doubt
My favorite is James Hunt from Rüfüs Du Sol and he plays it during 'On my knees again' 🥁🔥
"Top Ten Times the Lead Guitarist Stepped Back and Let the Drummer Have Fun"
greatest drummers to ever exists.
Somebody explain to me how the footage of The Beatles is in such high fidelity???
Was thinking just that
Neil Peart was in his element at le studio loved his work!
I will admit that it is the first time I listen to these performances. Still, when I read the title of this video, Michael Shrieve from Santana playing Soul Sacrifice at Woodstock popped into my head (the long version).
good list. fun fact about Wipeout. It was improvised and recorded on the spot in one take because they had more space to fill on the album so they just hit record and started playing and wipeout is what happened....And technically it's YYZed.
But Ventures were the band that popularized the Surf sound for 50 years around the world. Still hugely popular in Japan. And just listen to Mel Taylor! His solos are extraordinary and copied on UA-cam over and over. He played his solos on his band members guitars!
Best solo Caravan.
I have a question where is unsainted, devil in I by slipknot, and 100,000 years by KISS
I agree! Where is Slipknot on this list? They have killer drummers, some of the best!
@@olivialeyva852 while yeah even not knowing the names of drummers much and while his replacements still great. Joey jordison really was a fucking machine on drums. Definitely feel as though something should be on here.
Joey Jordison was the best! I just don’t want to diss any new Slipknot drummers, but they still kick ass!
Rush!
Gene Krupa’s drum solo on Sing Sing Sing is like none I have ever heard, before or since. His omission suggests that most options in the ratings don’t include the earliest of drum masters, a major oversight!
In general this list is for drummers playing pop music. Except for a few exceptions this leaves out Elvin Jones, Joe Morello, Ray Bauduc, Roy Haynes, Louis Bellson, Gene Krupa, Han Bennink, Papa Jo Jones, Max Roach, Philly Joe Jones, Tony Williams, Art Blakey, and so on.
R30 is my favorite live tour album by Rush. Neil was such an amazing and inspirational person, miss him greatly 😔
You guys aren't to Talk about Buddy Rich's impossible drum solo considering it from the west side story medley.
In a gada da vida is for me the most beautiful drum solo!!! as a adolescent I tried to cover it with my hand drums.
In-a-gadda-da-vida was actually supposed to be "In the garden of Eden". The singer was so drunk and high on LSD when he first asked his bandmate to write down the lyrics, that is what the bandmate wrote down. They just stuck with it after that. It was the only hit song they ever had. The band was called 'Iron Butterfly'.
Iron butterfly: I have the longest psychedelic song
Echoes by Pink Floyd: amateurs
Followed by Shine On You Crazy Diamon (Parts 1-9)
God they don't know the difference between a drum solo and a drum break! And why in the world would you pick YYZ, (one of my 67 favorite Rush songs) when you have actual solos such as "Der Trommler" on R30, or the "Rhythm Method" on Different Stages or THE ACTUAL GOD DAMNED SOLO IN "YYZ" FROM EXIT STAGE LEFT WHICH THEY EVEN MENTIONED IN THE DAMN CLIP! And Tom Sawyer is NOT YYZ!
Carl Palmers solo on Karn Evil 9 1st Impression on the Welcome Back my Friends live album should be up for consideration as one of the greatest drum solis ever
I love how many people hate buddy rich's posture but they don't realize that's him grooving
Calling the top 3:
Moon, Bonham, Peart!
Click on video...
Boom, boom, boom!
They are the best 3 drummers
The top two that come to my mind are In A Gadda-Da-Vida which you included, and the live version of YYZ by Rush, which you also included. Also , I don't know if I can think of any solos, but I love the drummer for Opeth. When I see them live, I often find myself watching the drummer. And of course Mike Portnoy.
I agree totally! I believe you’re talking about the solo Neil Peart does during the live version of YYZ on the Rush - Exit Stage Left album in ‘81. This solo includes the insane Kentucky Derby (yes the horse race) trumpet solo on the high toms! Can you get any cooler than that!? Everybody loves his more recent solo in Frankfurt, and I do too, but this is my favorite drum solo of all time!
the only drum solo I seen was during Disturbed music as a weapon 4 tour it was awesome really technical and precise and fast passed then as he slowed down it went right into the sickness. most of his solo in songs are fast passed and not long from what I remember
Respect to all great drummers but no.1 forever will be Neil Peart! Zero weaknesses. Plus a story of His life.
