Yeah David Gilmour might not be the best shredder ever or rocker that everyone expects. But what makes him so great is his style. I don't think anyone speaks through a guitar with such emotion like David does. His bends are out of this world. He is definitely one of the best.
For me the truest mark of a great guitarist is when you can instantly identify who’s playing no matter what guitar is being used or whether it’s that person’s own music or someone else’s. By that definition, David Gilmour is right at the top of the list. While he’s known for mostly playing Strats, David could play a spoon and still sound like himself. Glen Campbell, Roy Clark and Vince Gill, Joe Walsh and Don Felder. Coming up with lead guitar melodies that define/make a song is a gift and incredible talent. Angus from AC/DC, Slash, and Brian May are also perfect examples.
@TradeWinds On The Bay 😂 Just 'cos YOU were too young to appreciate Hendrix's mastery doesn't negate it! That simply means you SHOULD listen to it in order to understand how ANNND why he's listed on most greatest guitarists ever lists across the board!
@TradeWinds On The Bay Too young? So what, his music still exists. In fact there is way more of his material out there now than when he was still alive. Jimi is the greatest by far. He was a genius but you have to really learn his stuff, dig a little deeper and you will be rewarded. Page is easier to get into Hendrix will never cease to amaze you. Pity so many people just don't see/hear it. You have to invest in him. I mean Gilmour is great but his magic is 70% tone. Players like Hendrix and also Knopfler are/were so much more creative and imaginative.
Just a few more: Jeff Beck, Roy Buchanan, Steve Howe, Rory Gallagher, George Benson, Frank Marino, Lindsey Buckingham, Al Di Meola, Peter Frampton, Dickey Betts, Terry Kath, Alex Lifeson, John McLaughlin, Joe Walsh, Steve Hackett, Duane Allman, Adrian Belew, Pat Metheny, Martin Barre, Tom Morello, John Frusciante, Robby Krieger, Jeff Healey, Kim Mitchell, Johnny Winter, Mick Taylor, Rick Derringer, Dave Gregory, Don Felder, Jan Akkerman, Derek Trucks, Mick Ronson, Robert Cray, Carlos Alomar, George Harrison, Kim Thayil, Kurt Winter, Mick Ralphs, Justin Hayward, Walter Rossi, Joe Perry, Robin Trower, Robbie Robertson, Alvin Lee, Buddy Guy, Larry Coryell, Joe Pass, Gary Moffet, Peter White, Steve Miller, Dave Lambert, Ian Anderson, Ted Nugent.
Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen were asked what it was like to be known as the best guitarist ever. They both said they didn’t know - go ask Roy Clark.
@@djf750 this on Google: Someone once asked Jimi Hendrix what it was like to be the best guitar player on Earth. He said, “I don’t know, ask Roy Clark.” And Douglas asked Hendrix: “What's it was like to be the best rock guitarist in the world?” Jimi then beautifully responded, “I don't know, you'll have to ask Rory Gallagher”. I got both answers - we will just have to assume they were both great but Roy Clark was not a rock guitarist - maybe that’s the difference. Of course, Jimi Hendrix was no slouch himself.
I'm very lucky to have seen Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Duane Allman, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert King, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, Al Di Meola. Bass players Jaco Pastorius and Stanley Clarke. The list goes on and it's hard to pick the best but most people agree Jimi Hendrix and for me Jimmy Page is my favorite
Blackmores guitar solos with the mark 2 line up of Deep Purple were killer. Songs like Smoke on the water, Highway star, Speed king, Sweet child in time, Pictures of home, and his instrumentals with the band Rainbow.🎸
Blackmore IS Rainbow. Not to say Rainbow in 70's wasn't on different level from rest, with the a-list crew he had, but it was still very much his band. Light in the Black is probably my favorite of Blackmore's solos. The song is also pretty much the blueprint for power metal, over a decade before the genre came to be.
What about George Harrison he put the mark for guitarists. Also he used other types of string instruments. Nobody’s has composed music like here comes the sin or something. Tom morello where is he? I am glad you put chuck berry and Paco de Lucia of course. Where is Tom morello and Andy summers?
@@itamarbushari88 yes, i choose him also. im a big fan of the beatles and besides his amazing songwriting and spiritual wisdom with words his guitar skills are also very good. he isnt the kind of player to go in at unpredictable, wild solos like my other three picks but you all his ( genius) breaks you can hum. that just shows it.
@@tyrannosauruszeppelin2205 yep exactly, and that is also true about the Beatles and why I love, they aren't like the others, here guitarist, like crazy solos and thing, but more simple catchy beautiful melodies..
I think Paul was at least equal to George. He was the original lead guitarist, George was only there because Paul would get stage fright, and Paul would take over when George couldn’t get it, and he played one of their best solos, in Taxman.
The reality is that any list like this will never be agreed on by everyone. Everyone has their own taste and each musician has their own style and sound, so my answer to the question is always that they are each the best at what they do. One day Blackmore could be my favourite and another day it could be Page, or Gilmore, or Clapton or whoever I'm in the mood to listen to at the time. Everyone mentioned in the video and in the comments are all phenomenal musicians and all deserve respect.
To me, Neal Schon is one of the most underestimated and underappreciated guitarists of all time. He can shred and can do acoustic. He was Santana''s protege.
@@Grandizer8989 Listen to his solo albums and his albums with velvet revolver then come back to shit on him. Slash has a whole world of music out there
Every one of these many You Tube lists are an opinion of so-m-eone, but what I love is on all of them I enjoy so many performances from so many talented musicians. I can't pick just a small group for my own favorites. If I haven't heard someone in a while, some are new to me as well, I go out and load my spotify playlist and enjoy some great music I haven't heard in a long time for the most part.
George gets so little recognition among obviously the other members of his band but that makes him special. He'll be my favourite Beatle forever and god his songs are probably my picks
I don't know his guitar playing was nothing special but I do like his songs u are either a good songwriter or a great guitarist and in his case he was gifted with writing great songs
Steve Vai, Allen Holdsworth, Steve Howe, Nuno Bettencourt, Gary Moore, John McLaughlin, Larry Carlton, Steve Lukather, John Petrucci, Al Dimeola, and Martin Barre right off of the top of my head should have made this list...
@@worm8886 I am saying that they can't add all those guitarists, that's what I'm saying, I'm not saying they aren't good enough, but there are many good guitarists not only 20, it's impossible to mention all of them.
Glen Campbell was one of the most versatile players ever. Eddie Van Halen wanted Alice Cooper to introduce him to Campbell for some pointers. Glen couldnt read music but was a true born 'play by ear' talent! He was a member of The Wrecking Crew' as well.
Jimmy Page might not be the best technically ever but he was maybe the most influential and most definitely my favorite. What he created, and the shear amount of music he created as a composer and a guitarist is to this day unmatched and may never be.
@@stanclips8227 Yep, the BEST. If not just for the sure number of great riffs. The producing of all of the great music, especially at the time was pure genius also. We were and still are lucky to be able to enjoy the mastery.
My high school guitar teacher who has a PhD jn guitar: “I can’t write like these guys but I can outplay any of them.” It’s true. The best guitar player of all time is probably some guy from Spain you have never heard of.
I disagree with the statement that there are genius unknown guitar players out there but for your guitar teacher to make the assumption that he/she can outplay ANY of the famous ones, I don't buy it. Jimmy Hendrix and the guitar were as one and great guitar players of that era and the current, look up to him. Then there is Joe Walsh. Just these two guys have reached Mastery level. For someone to outplay them is a rarity.
Wait, George was not on the list??? It's not just about the technical wizardry but the subtle and songwriting complimentary pieces George put in The Beatles songs that help make them what they were.
I'm a Chilli 🌶 Fan as much as the next guy, but John (or the band for that matter) wasn't really known for their shredding ability. No one ever looks back on the history of best guitar players and thinks Chilli Peppers. Sorry man. Seeing the band live, I know they can jam but this list was reserved more for impact on music.

@@nicholascameron6603 John was one of the most influential guitarists of the 90s. He doesn’t have the longevity of people like Clapton but still should be at least an honourable mentions.

May isn't just a regular guitarist, he also has a degree on Astrophysics, and yep he does have a book about that. For information, astrophysics is a field in astronomy that understands the physics behind stuff.
I have to agree that this list is put together to get people riled up in the comments, because every single guitarist I know (and will ever meet) would say that Mark Knopfler should be waay higher than Billy Gibbons on such a list. Billy is impressive as a strictly blues-guitarist, but Mark is much more versatile and technical
JEFF BECK! I never expect to agree with any of these lists, but I was happy to see Ritchie Blackmore, Brian May and David Gilmour recognized. But how a list like this could completely ignore Jeff Beck is disgraceful.

Roy Buchanan - for his unmatched collection of fretboard fireworks; for his role as a pioneer, and major influencer, of blues-based lead guitar, and for the fact that he did it all using just his Telecaster plugged straight into his Fender Amp. I believe a good portion of the great guitarists that arose in the mid to late sixties, went to see Roy perform and didn't soon forget it.
I like that you had Richie Blackmore on the list. There were a few missing, like the late great Jeff Beck. Actually, the older guitarists are greater than the younger ones because they had to think up all the techniques and styles. The younger ones just copied them straight out of the book, and from a much younger age.
@@WesW3187 One thing that is different is that he is playing a baritone scale length guitar. That is quite a bit different. I think it is a 26 in scale length.

Roy Clark’s guitar skills were amazing, and his rendition of Paul McCartney’s “Yesterday” had him surpassing McCartney’s own playing and singing of that song. Most of Clark’s music was Country, but he performed amazing Rock songs as well.

Jimmy Page should be number one. His talent is second to NONE.

Someone once asked Jimi Hendrix what it was like to be the best guitar player on Earth. He said, “I don’t know, ask Roy Clark.”
