Conspiracy Theory: We all disagree with this list.
Oh my god
That’s insane
Conspiracy theory:
They know it's a shit list, and it's made intentionally like that to increase engagement because people like me end up bitching in the comments.
@Shashwat mishra Nice guitar work indeed, but Steve Vai has greater reportair in his solo career. Songs like Tender Surrender or even The Attitude Song displays better his guitar technique.
They even said the Eruption solo was from Beat It.
He’s not dead.
"Honorable mention" to Chuck is an insult to Rock n Roll
Chuck was an OG in the game. Jimmie was good but overrated in this. Top ten yes! Maybe if he had more time then he may of been a GOAT.
Totally agree. He influenced an entire generation of guitar players and was revered by The Beatles, The Beach Boys and The Rolling Stones. He is the father of modern guitar playing.
Watch mojo is confusing Chuck with his cousin Marvin
Totally agree. People need to watch some old time videos and see what he is doing with his hands.
@@AWMindset Chuck Berry is the king of Rock N Roll. Not Elvis the pelvis.
These guitarists came to mind [though I can't think who I would remove from your list to make room for them]: Jeff Beck, Steve Howe, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Robin Trower, Dick Dale, Les Paul, Buckethead, Roy Clark, Chet Atkins, Steve Hacket, Terry Kath, Stephen Stills, John Petrucci, Mikael Åkerfeldt, Jerry Garcia, Jerry Reed, Alex Lifeson, Al Di Meola, Guthrie Govan, Steven Wilson, and of course, Marty McFly
Steve Howe still blows me away.
Roy Buchanan? Elmore James? Rory Gallagher? Duane Allman? (to me, they'd replace Garcia, Satriani, Kath and Stills on your list. ymmv… ;-)
Marty McFly😀
Steve Lukather is a monster guitar player
Zakk Wylde, Chuck Shuldiner, Gary Moore, Joe Bonamassa, Angus Young, Rudolf Schenker, Duane Allman, Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Buddy Guy.... Roy Buchanan,
Any list with Keith Richard and NOT Jeff Beck is a jacked up list
You gotta get Jimi Hendrix at number 1 so somebody has to go!
Brian Jones died too young to show all he could do. On “Paint it Black” he commanded the sitar to his needs in that song for one.
Others are David Bromberg who could make a guitar talk.
I agree!!!
Keith Richards is a poop
Kirk Hammett? Stephen Stills?? George Harrison??? Slash???? Jeff Beck????? Did you guys even do your homework on this one?!
You can't have Kirk Hammett on a list if Dave Mustaine, Adrian Smith, Dave Murray, Jeff Hanneman, Zakk Wylde, John Petrucci and Paul Gilbert aren't on it!!

It's criminal that Jeff Beck is not here. He's on a different soundwave altogether. He is completely original and actually, he is too good for your silly lists!!
EDIT Thank you for the likes. I wrote this several months ago, and now very recently Jeff has passed away.😪
I find it sad that all these youtube channels ignored him in their "best guitarist" or "most influential guitarist lists" but since he has died, have suddenly remembered him, making tributes!!
Boo to them making money off him!!✌
And no Peter Green either.
crazy no Jeff Beck.... RIP
@@adrianwu6761 Yes I agree. RIP Peter Green💚
RIP Jeff Beck💜😪 Terribly sad, tragic recent news. I am still in shock.
Of all the things to happen when a legendary guitarist has a new wave of touring success and Johnny Depp bringing in his fans who may not have known much about Jeff's legend status. Just so sad.

Yes. He really should be !!
I saw Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock. Wonderful! I think Jeff Healy and Angus Young should be here too! 😀
Are you sure it wasnt the booze and drugs at Woodstock that made him wonderful ??
Angus Young is the AC/DC guitarist...
@@lyndonp6296 Are you on drugs and booze? Dude, he was the Greatest... Ritchie Blackmore, Jimmi Page, Toni Iommi, David Gilmour, Santana, Gary Moore, etc., have said in their own words that they were influenced by Jimi Hendrix... Even Eric Clapton once played with him on stage and got stage frozen by Jimi's performance and went backstage, yelling at his manager, saying, "Why didn't you tell me he is that good"... and then you, Mr. Nobody, are questioning Jimi's greatness??? In the best guess, you are an IDIOT...
I had the unbelievable experience of jamming with Eric and Jimi in NYC for a couple hours.
The NYPD broke it up, as was after midnight and my band's loft was a few doors down from a firehouse. We were keeping them awake.
At that point, I thought they were equally incredible guitarists. Jimi was such a terrible loss.
People like you piss me off. Hendrix and Clapton never lived in never lived in New York at the same time.
¿¿Are you serious??
I mean, ¿is it true that you jammed with those two, or are you just joking?

John Frusciante
George Harrison

Jeff Beck
Johnny Greenwood
Kirk Hammett
Johnny Greenwood is amazing in his own way for adapting to the new sound Radiohead is always going for, there’s a reason Paul Thomas Anderson, a Master of his craft, always wants Greenwood for his movies
And angus young
Dave Mustaine too
Steve Hackett, Steve Howe...
Mick Ronson
Larry Carlton, Derek Trucks, Duane Allman, Jon Gomm, Danny Gatton, Tom Morello, Gary Moore, Peter Green, Johnny Marr, Rory Gallagher, Chet Atkins, Joe Bonamassa, Alex Lifeson, Buckethead and Slash. None even get mentions??
James Hetfield and Kirk Hammet
Not even Angus Young
Dave mustaine
There's some pretty good competition yk
Mick Mars?
Glen Campbell, Roy Clark and Vince Gill, Joe Walsh and Don Felder. Coming up with lead guitar melodies that define/make a song is a gift and incredible talent. Angus from AC/DC, Slash, and Brian May are also perfect examples.
Slash, Samboro, Peter Frampton, Joe Walsh, Eddie Van Halen, Eric Clapton, Angus Young, Roy Clark, Jeff Beck

Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen were asked what it was like to be known as the best guitarist ever. They both said they didn’t know - go ask Roy Clark.
I thought Hendrix said "go ask Rory Gallagher"
@@djf750 this on Google:
Someone once asked Jimi Hendrix what it was like to be the best guitar player on Earth. He said, “I don’t know, ask Roy Clark.”
And
Douglas asked Hendrix: “What's it was like to be the best rock guitarist in the world?” Jimi then beautifully responded, “I don't know, you'll have to ask Rory Gallagher”.
I got both answers - we will just have to assume they were both great but Roy Clark was not a rock guitarist - maybe that’s the difference. Of course, Jimi Hendrix was no slouch himself.

I'm very lucky to have seen Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Duane Allman, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert King, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, Al Di Meola. Proof that Duane Allman, Dickey Betts, Johnny Winter, John Fogerty, Joe Walsh, Albert King, Jeff Beck, Muddy Waters, and other legends are criminally under credited and under appreciated.
Can’t believe Jeff Beck was not here 💔
And Frank Marino
@Col70 Thanks very much, I just feel that he is grossly underrated and should be included on any list of great guitarists.
Allman, Winter, Beck, Walsh, E. Johnson should have been on the top 20!
Who then do you bump out of there top 20?
Robin Trower and Roy Buchanan are always under scored.
Jeff Beck and George Harrison should've at least gotten an honorable mention
George shouldnt be on it
Page is VASTLY OVERRATED if you're talking about skill.
However, if you're talking about influence, then I will agree.
@Jimmy Page: Incredible, right?

The list comes very much from the Blues-rock-Metal Genre. To me, I miss Les Paul, who was not only the Investor of the iconic single cut solid body guitar and the multitrack recording system, but also was a master of virtuos guitar playing. His influence on modern music can‘t be overestimated. Going on to rockabilly I thing Brian Setzer is the man with his incredible minimalistic Stray Cats! Just wonderful. Coming to Rock-Pop, I think „the Edge“ needs to be mentioned. He is an 28:00 absolute master of the delay pedal, playing rhythm and solo at the same time. No one has ever been able to copy his style. And did. you ever see Jeff Healey? That blind guy with this great empathy and absolute unique technique! Watch him on UA-cam playing „While my guitar gently weeps“! Outrageous! Thanks for reading ! Robert
Jeff Healey doing Look At Little Sister with SRV is my favorite Jeff Healey performance! The man jumps up, without a strap, plays, and doesn't miss a lick or drop his guitar.
Al Di Meola / Alex Lifeson / Albert King / Steve Vai / George Harrison / Rory Gallagher / Angus Young...all of these MUST be on the list.

The fact Slash, John Frusciante and Angus Young, 3 extremely influential guitarist (and two of them they used in the intro) didn’t even make the cut is an absolute outrage.
Don’t forget George Harrison!
You also can’t put slash in without putting Buckethead in.
Jk (this list isn’t about technical skill)
No
Who would u replace?
After reading your comment I have turned this off. They couldn’t even give Angus a mention? I picked up the guitar because of his influence on me!
To be honest, Keith Richards has the advantage over the rest of the list in that he has been playing about 300-400 years.
and is also immortal
And he looks like he started when he was already 40 years old.
Best comment or "joke" I've heard lately was that for every cigarette someone has God takes 1 day off of their life.....and gives it to Keith Richards
he has been playing guitar for the dinosaurs
Adam said to Eve....."Who's that guy?" and GOD interrupted saying.....I don't know where he came from, but Keith was here when I got here
Finally,!!! A list I have no qualms with. Well done!!!
Brian May plays the guitar that he and his dad built when he was younger. He's amazing and a great musician and human being. Sir Brian isn't just all that but a scientist with a doctorate to boost! ❤❤❤❤❤ Jeff Beck is another awesome guitarist, so was Stevie Ray Vaughn. Johnny Winter is seriously underrated!!!🥰🥰🥰

Any list that has Keith Richards this high and actually higher than Clapton is a fucking Joke.
this is true, he should not make any top 50 list, much less top 20
I know. He is barely even a lead guitarist. Who ever talks about his solos? Yeah he has some good riffs, but I wouldn't even call him a great guitarist let alone one of the greatest, let alone greater than Clapton, that's just blasphemous!
@@XXX.0X He's the exact same as Malcolm Young, and he can't sing worth a shit. At least Malcolm could sing some tasty backgound

Exactly, just because Rolling Stones is a legendary band they included Keith Richard's, but we're talking about guitarists here, something that Watchmojo doesn't understand..
Its the best list I've heard so far.
I used to dig older players for telling me Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck were the best. Especially compared to modern players. But as I am about to enter my 30s I hear their influences everywhere and although this list is missing names, it checks a lot of the boxes.
It’s very difficult to put a list like this together - you’re never going to satisfy anyone - but Glenn Campbell was a guitar genius and of course a key member of the famous Wrecking Crew.
he was also a Beach Boy!!
And he could play any style, who knows what records he has played on uncredited or with another names, he could put on a Les Paul and you wouldn’t know it was him.
THANK YOU! It’s awesome that he’s finally starting to get the recognition among the public that he long deserved. Within the industry he’s been a legend for a long time.
Well, you are indeed correct about #1. Jimi was and still is the greatest lead guitarist in the world 🌎. 👏

One more vote for Jeff Beck and he should be not only on the list but near the top. Carlos Santana should be way higher.
So many misses, especially given the broad category. Joe Pass, Andres Segovia, Julian Bream, Johnny Winter, Bill Frissell, Derek Trucks......and Les Paul at least as honorable mention.

Great list. I would find it very hard to put one above another and very difficult to whittle the list down to 20.
As a fan of David Gilmour, I was shocked to see him 4th on this list. But, I am very pleased to see it. He is always number one in my heart, and ears lol
this list is about who shreds the best is the best guitar player which is f*cking disgusting. Most influential players dont get their credits, seeing mark knopfler at no. 19 almost made me explode
As a PF fan since 73 , I never really appreciated how great Gilmour is...I started isolating him about 20 years ago...Staggering comes to mind...The Outro's on Dogs or Have a cigar take my breath away...I place him on a pedestal shared with Steve Howe, Alex lifeson, Zappa, Tony Iommi, Brian May, Page...
Yeah David Gilmour might not be the best shredder ever or rocker that everyone expects. But what makes him so great is his style. I don't think anyone speaks through a guitar with such emotion like David does. His bends are out of this world. He is definitely one of the best.
For me the truest mark of a great guitarist is when you can instantly identify who’s playing no matter what guitar is being used or whether it’s that person’s own music or someone else’s. By that definition, David Gilmour is right at the top of the list. While he’s known for mostly playing Strats, David could play a spoon and still sound like himself. And whether it’s Pink Floyd, his solo work or as a session musician for someone else, you know immediately that it’s David Gilmour on guitar. Perfect example, No More Lonely Nights, by Paul McCartney.
I agree. Watch Rick Beatos top 20. He's an actual musician.
Chuck Berry, Duane Allman, Jeff Beck have to be on this list
Minimum, BECK.

I think Paul was at least equal to George. He was the original lead guitarist, George was only there because Paul would get stage fright, and Paul would take over when George couldn’t get it, and he played one of their best solos, in Taxman.
It is a travesty that Jeff Beck is not on this list. All great guitar players always mention Jeff Beck as influential in their playing.

I have to agree that this list is put together to get people riled up in the comments, because every single guitarist I know (and will ever meet) would say that Mark Knopfler should be waay higher than Billy Gibbons on such a list. @@nicholascameron6603 John was one of the most influential guitarists of the 90s. He doesn’t have the longevity of people like Clapton but still should be at least an honourable mentions.
@@nicholascameron6603 John shreds the fuck out of everything what
I've got a list: EVH #1, Jimmy Page, Nuno Bettencourt, Joe Satriani, Stanley Jordan, George Benson, Degrassi, Slash, Eric Clapton, Gilmore, etc. etc. Its all what you like. There are so many musicians that are incredible that it's amazing we have this many choices to listen to.
Tom Scholz?
Don Felder?
Derek Trucks?
The Edge?
Duane Allman?
John Bonamassa?
Joe Satriani?
Joe Walsh?
Larry Carlton?
Neal Schon?
Buddy Guy deserves a mention here. He was a major influence for many of the guitarists on this list.
Yes, yes yes
Absolutely!
Right? Buddy, Albert King, Stevie Ray Vaughn...
Buddy Guy sucks
Yes
Missing from this list; Steve Howe from Yes. He was voted Best Overall Guitarist five years in a row by Guitar Player Magazine.
LOL. I worked at a trucking co. that won all sorts of awards from mags and assns. that were created by the owner.
Owned by Steve Howe
Greg Howe
@@johnhamilton7797 Didn't he pitch for the Dodgers? A lefty? Yes is what they play for insomniacs when they can't sleep
This is her list not theres you db ass
I would name this as not the list of the best but a short list of world talanted musicians we can tell right now without thinking 😊
Gary Moore is my favorite!
An interviewer once asked Jimi Hendrix what it was like to be the greatest guitarist in the world. Hendrix replied that he did not know and advised the interviewer to ask Rory Gallagher, who seems to be missing from this list.
His favorite guitarist wad the guitarist from zz top
That's not what he said. He told the interviewer to go ask Terry Kath from the band Chicago.
Bruce Thrasher, Jimi said Terry Kath was the best guitarist in the universe.
That is WRONG, what he said was that he was the best guitarist in this chair. The interview is on UA-cam yet everyone seems to think he said it about this guy or that guy not true
Check out Jimi Hendrix 9 favourite guitar players.
This is proof that George Harrison is criminally underrated
Ikr, who's more influential than George Harrison
Wait, George was not on the list??? It's not just about the technical wizardry but the subtle and songwriting complimentary pieces George put in The Beatles songs that help make them what they were.
Harrison is Top 20 guitarists ever? He wasn't even the best guitarist in the Beatles
Same for Brian May and Prince! Totally underrated!
I was wondering where all the Beatles were
We all know how The Monkees get written off as a 'fake band', but Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork were both incredible guitarists...Mike went on to revolutionize Southern Rock (and invent MTV), and Peter was more classically trained, and put out some wonderful solo albums. And, while I notice George Harrison wasn't on this list, at least his son made it in the video (the kid playing behind Tom Petty in the Prince segment).
You mention Terry Kath was one of Jimmy Hendricks favorite guitar players. I've heard from multiple sources that when Chicago opened for Hendricks at Whiskey a go go and did Introduction, Hendricks said "Man that dude is better than me" And Terry Kath is not on your list. What a shame.
Damn mojo, you need to do some more research on guitarists. 🙄
Top 20 most mainstream male guitarists. The more famous the more talented the guitarist.
Glen Campbell and Roy Clark, they could play anything. Glen was a studio musician and he did play every thing.
You are correct sir.
Glen Campbell can shred 12 strings .
Thank you. I’m 62. I saw them both. Probably best I ever seen. Not to mention Roy could play anything with strings.
I agree, Jimmy, my best 😊friend
Interesting how they use a clip of Yngwie with the DIO dragon in the background. That's gotta be before 1985 then, because The Sacred Heart tour was the last time all 12 semi trailers worth of stage props were used. It was an amazing time to be a teenage metalhead. Those concerts were fucking epic.
Steve Vai, Allen Holdsworth, Steve Howe, Nuno Bettencourt, Gary Moore, John McLaughlin, Larry Carlton, Steve Lukather, John Petrucci, Al Dimeola, and Martin Barre right off of the top of my head should have made this list...
John Petrucci as well
Ichika Nito kekw
You guys have to understand this is a top 20 not a top 100.
@@mateuscamargo3202 are you saying mojo's Top 20 is accurate?
@@worm8886 I am saying that they can't add all those guitarists, that's what I'm saying, I'm not saying they aren't good enough, but there are many good guitarists not only 20, it's impossible to mention all of them.
Jimmy was incredible, but Eddie is the absolute best of all time. Also, where is Angus Young on this list. Did I miss him?
Eddie is awesome but definitely not the best
@@KodyWayne9210 I disagree. Eddie is the best without a doubt.
Eddie VH= 🐐
Angus was No. 20... the First one mentioned.....
@@rchoquette2975 Thanks. I'll have to watch it again!
Terry Kath, Chicago!
Yes I do agree 👍
May isn't just a regular guitarist, he also has a degree on Astrophysics, and yep he does have a book about that. For information, astrophysics is a field in astronomy that understands the physics behind stuff.
And especially the physics of girl's behinds...😁
The guitar playing of Gilmore is something to watch. He plays so many notes. Pink Floyd is I think my all time favorite Band. I loved The Wall! Got my little black book with my poems in. Cheers!
It's hard to beat David Gilmour. I'm a long time fan.
Gilmore is one of the all time best, and still is great today! Unlike most, he hasn’t lost a step. Arguably better now than ever! His solo on “Comfortably Numb” is one for the ages!!👍
One of my very favorite guitarist. I just love David Gilmore! ❤️ Karen
Yes good ranking,
1.Jimi Hendrix
2. Brian May
3. Richie Blackmore
4. Dave Gilmour
5. Jimi Page
I agree
To me, Neal Schon is one of the most underestimated and underappreciated guitarists of all time. He can shred and can do acoustic. He was Santana''s protege.
Nah he’s probably too 40
So is Ricky medlocke of Blackfoot and now skinner band.....!!!!!
He also played with Eric Clapton in Cream. I emphatically agree!
Listen to him on stage w satch and tell me he’s top 40 again…
One of the greatest, by far. In one of the greatest Rock Bands of all times. Thanks Christine
dave gilmour, mark knoffler, duan alman, jeff beck would be my top ones, but styles vary so much. Gilmour puts the most emotion into it, IMO. I find it hard to believe Jeff Beck is not on the list. It woudl have been better to categorize them.
Yes, where’s Jeff Beck?
Agree with You . Allman, Knopfler, Beck 28:00 Gilmour and Gary Moore
@@DotoreMartinezvasconcelos Yes, and Gary too. I live in Belfast where Gary was from. When I think of Django, John Williams, Robert Johnston, Ry Cooder, Wes Montgomery, John McLaughlin, etc., etc, I think of how such lists are a bit pointless - it's not a competition....
I agree with your top 5
go check Perpetual Burn and Triumphant Hearts by Jason Becker, if you don't know his story... stop what you're doing and go check this gem of a man
James Hetfield. And Edward vanhallen. Stevie ray von..jimmy hendrix and jimmy page jerry reed . Billy gibbons and Kerry king are my favorite ❤
