Me too bro. I own a G35 and a 3000GT GTO. Both have heavy as shit steering already. The G35 is worse lol. At first i thought they had power steering problems. But the previous 3000GT owner told me sport cars have heavy steering because they give better stability at high speed and better accuracy when cornering. So i didn't bother asking about the G35 lol I know it has a 350z rack so it heavy as shit. Btw it might be better for sport driving racing but in parking lots it's a pain lol No your economy car with it light playstation like steering wheel is not a sports car. Talking to you corolla and cavalier owners with wings and muffler deletes lol

You're tutorial videos are top notch. I replaced my water pump, seals and what not, all thanks to your video. Great quality and to the point. Wish your style was more widespread.
I deleted my power steering, this video was super helpful and the car handles like a dream! One thing I would recommend is dialing down the caster when doing this, the same amount of caster you would want with power steering makes it very difficult to steer without it. I have about 3.5 degrees of caster (instead of 5-6 degrees) and it is much easier to steer now and still tracks straight on its own.
The real question is how well does it still counter steer on it's own when you take away that much castor... You want the steering to be able to find center on it's own if you experience oversteer and loose grip of the wheel, You don't always have perfect memory of where to turn towards after the wheel spins out of control from your grip. But with 5+ degrees of castor, you don't have to worry much about it because it will counter steer it self back straight.

I want to thank you so much for this video. I just picked up a second NA and somebody borked the steering rack really bad. This gives me all the confidence to get in there, pull the rack and disassemble it to see if I can't rebuild it, and if not, at least get a replacement rack to make my steering possible again. I love UA-cam and some of the contributors and content creators.
I've done this steering rack conversion on an Rx7 FC and a 4th gen Prelude and I have to say it is hands down my favorite "mod". Probably not too much on the Prelude since its a heavier chassis but being able to feel the road helps me to know how to reenact to certain instances. Cant wait to do this on my Miata when I get it this July!

THANK YOU. I just bought a 91 na6 miata with a serious power steering leak, and as a result the pump was whining like a chihuahua. I found your video, and over the course of a week de-powered the rack with my dad! Now I have manual steering and love the heavy feel of the steering wheel. Amazing video, thank you!!
I know this is rather old at this point but there is also a quill spring in the pinion shaft that allows the hydraulic spool valve to send fluid to the ram. If you want maximum feed back then the quill spring needs to be shimmed or welded so all the slop in the linkage is taken up and made solid.
To preserve your alignment, you should just break the jam nut loose just enough to where you can spin the inner tie rod outof the outer. when it's time for install, you just spin the inner into the outer tie rod then tighten the jam nut once it's snug against the outer. If you have access to more tools like a ball joint press and a tie rod puller you should just remove the outer tie rod with it still connected. All if your boots are in good shape. Or just get an alignment. Cool videos dude.

That means a lot, because I always think twice about doing videos that have been done several times already. This probably took me at least 10-12 hours just to make a 14 minute video including filming and editing but I think it came out pretty clean.

So one thing i thought of to make the centering part easier (idk if it actually works, curious to hear input) what if when you remove the rack you have it at full lock in one direction. That way you just need to put it at full lock in that direction.

I've had Miatas with and without. It really comes down to personal preference, I like both on the track and the street. I definitely prefer no power steering if I have the choice. The Miata is very light so it's not to hard to drive at all, even with big sticky tires.

did it. would never go back. the power gain is not much, but noticeable.... only thing i would have done different (like i did) is take the inner tie rods off while the rack is still on the car. much easier to do AND you don't have to adjust the inner/outer again. and the adjuster nut doesn't need to removed and then you don't have to readjust it. lastly, you didn't weld the steering shaft, it has slop in it and is way noticeable when reassembled. you will have a dead spot of almost an inch or two in the steering if you don't weld it. cool dog!
I deleted the power steering on my Integra, I just looped the rack with clean fluid in. Feels good for driving but is very stiff when still but you quickly learn how to park/ turn round etc without having to steer while not moving
Great Vid, watched it a few times before attempting it and already had a hard time removing the rack. Turns out I missed the *remove bolt completely before and could only move the steering rod out by a few mm, thank you for putting it up!
Yep, I RTV'd mine as well. Good work. I also had someone weld the pinion in 4 spots since there is slop there as well for the purpose of pushing fluid. I had a 2000 model year which is slightly different than the one you worked on, YMMV.
Greg: great video. But at 10:50, the locking plate needs to be removed and held on the steering rack end so that the tabs inside it engage with the slots in the rack. If not, it's not doing anything to hold the pieces together... Without a locking plate, the inner tie rods can eventually back out of the rack itself. They're not likely to come out because you'd destroy tires from a bad toe setting long before it comes apart. It's better to replace those lock plates, but you can straighten them. Your advice of using lock-tite is spot on. Thanks again!
Deleting PS and welding the pinion in my 02 made me a better driver. Likewise, removing ABS helped me improve braking technique. Some people learn just as well with PS and ABS. YMMV.

great video, i welded the pinon when i did mine to eliminate the slop thats built in to the pinon. Use steel putty in the holes and add a couple grease zerts close to the pinon
I had a powered steering MX-5 before, it was fine. But now i got one that didn't have power steering from the factory, so much better! And so much more room in the engine bay!

Well done. Watching this because my rack started sweating at the top rack seal. Only remark for the video, if the rack was designed for synthetic fluid, the end seals may not resist well to the petroleum based grease, may swell and make turning harder after a while. De-assisted steering feeling will also come down to the rack gear 'ratio', manual cars from factory had a different ratio than on assisted ones. Also, guess you need a shorter belt to bypass the pump while there, better not run a pump dry for too long
The power steering belt doesn't run any other ancillaries, so simply remove the belt entirely. Unless your car has AC, in which case, yes shorter belt or just remove AC 🤣
Reference to the inner tie rod lock washers there is tangs on the inner part of washer that should be located in cut out on shaft otherwise bending washer over on outer circumference if not doing anything.

I thought about it, I've driven racks with and without and I can't tell too much of a difference. If it becomes noticeable on this car I will definitely have it done.
If you ever do so, it would be cool to do before after comparison. Moto-IQ has a video on their page that shows how much slack the pinion got. Btw. I like the solution with the silicone sealant. Some of those bolts are impossible to get and the sold kits are fairly pricey.

The torsion bar in the pinion is what lets the hydraulic pressure flow. When you turn the wheel the torsion twists slightly without the pinion turning which effectively opens a valve to let hydraulic pressure flow into one side of the rack. Then you stop turning the pinion, the rack catches up with the torsion bar on the pinion from hydraulic pressure and closes the valve. So imagine without the hydraulic pressure to catch up with the torsion bar all you're doing is overcoming the torsion spring pressure before the rack moves.
There is supposed to be a weld required. The pinion of the PS rack is two pieces and they twist at different rates as you turn the wheel. The reason this happens is that it acts as a valve being less abruptly actuated in order to build hydraulic pressure in the rack. when you de-power you wind up with sloppy steering due to this flex. Welding the two pieces together eliminates this and sharpens up the steering. One of my power steering pipes just split on my mk2 so rather than buy new PAS pipes i'm just gonna de-power the rack so this will definitely come in handy!

Greg, Can you explain WHY you chose to not weld the pinion and delete the spool/rotary valve? Also, I am one of those guys that will always recommend replacing cheap hardware like the retaining washers on the ends of the tie rods. I am sure you've heard horror stories of these things coming loose on a track at 100mph, but I would think that even though your viewers don't necessarily track their vehicles, they do expect to get longevity out of their mods. That being said, at $1 a piece, there's no excuse not to replace them. Great video series in the making. I loved broke and boosted, but I am enjoying watching you join the forged club. Awesome video. Very informative. My only recommendation would be to find the bolts or plugs to lock those holes closed. I feel like they would last a lot longer than a dollop of silicone. Other than that, great video. Upload more!!!!

Another way to close off the open power steering lines is to put the lines back in place and cut them with a pair of diagonal cutters. The pinch of the diagonal cutters is powerful enough to seal them Right before they cut.

When you have the inner tie rods off, you can squeeze the lock washers in a bench vice to flatten them out.

The torsion bar in the pinion is what lets the hydraulic pressure flow. When you turn the wheel the torsion twists slightly without the pinion turning which effectively opens a valve to let hydraulic pressure flow into one side of the rack. Then you stop turning the pinion, the rack catches up with the torsion bar on the pinion from hydraulic pressure and closes the valve. So imagine without the hydraulic pressure to catch up with the torsion bar all you're doing is overcoming the torsion spring pressure before the rack moves.

There is supposed to be a weld required. The pinion of the PS rack is two pieces and they twist at different rates as you turn the wheel. The reason this happens is that it acts as a valve being less abruptly actuated in order to build hydraulic pressure in the rack. when you de-power you wind up with sloppy steering due to this flex. Welding the two pieces together eliminates this and sharpens up the steering. One of my power steering pipes just split on my mk2 so rather than buy new PAS pipes i'm just gonna de-power the rack so this will definitely come in handy!

Can you explain WHY you chose to not weld the pinion and delete the spool/rotary valve? Also, I am one of those guys that will always recommend replacing cheap hardware like the retaining washers on the ends of the tie rods. I am sure you've heard horror stories of these things coming loose on a track at 100mph, but I would think that even though your viewers don't necessarily track their vehicles, they do expect to get longevity out of their mods. That being said, at $1 a piece, there's no excuse not to replace them. Great video series in the making. I loved broke and boosted, but I am enjoying watching you join the forged club. It's a good time.

Awesome video. Very informative. My only recommendation would be to find the bolts or plugs to lock those holes closed. I feel like they would last a lot longer than a dollop of silicone. Other than that, great video. Upload more!!!!
Yeah that's why I mentioned using bolts in the video just to let people know about that option. It's definitely better.

Another way to close off the open power steering lines is to put the lines back in place and cut them with a pair of diagonal cutters. The pinch of the diagonal cutters is powerful enough to seal them Right before they cut.
