Thank you for the awesome video Greg! This is my next mod.
Tom's Turbo Garage whoaaaa two prophets meet
Nope I know, I can't believe they met.
I cant believe you don't have a rollbar in that monster. lol.
I was honestly surprised it wasn't part of the original build
Would love to see "Turbo Lego Man Tom", And "Car VVT Passion Channel" collaborate !
One small criticism: If you drill a hole or make a cut you should always put on some paint to prevent it from rusting. I usually use some zinc-spray if the color is not important because it dries really fast. Such small holes can lead to some really nasty rust problems a few years in the future.
It is also a good idea to put some grease or cavity wax(I hope this is the right word^^) between washers and the big mounting plates and the chassis to prevent water from getting in.
Marcel Pursche Thats what I thought too!
Good call. I like how you think. IM Communist Canada rust is mandatory.
Thanks for the tip
And put the bolts through from the bottom so you can visibly see later on if bolts snap.
Highly recommend this mod. The once floppy rear-end felt new again after this mod. As an added bonus, you don't get decapitated if you roll it.
lol
But what about cracking your head on the bar if you get rear ended? 🤔 Which it is more likely to get rear ended then roll over in this car.
@@suavecito_o7927 New seats.
@@suavecito_o7927 true, its only a 10% of rolling over in a Miata
Thanks so much for this. My teenage son and I put one in his Miata, it went in smoothly thanks to your detailed and helpful video. Great father/son project. No discovery learning.
I wish i had a dad like you
Can you please be my dad? You can give your son to my birth father if you don't want too many sons
"He gets a little bit crazy" damn Greg why ya gotta downplay my accomplishments like that
lmao nice channel
would also recommend throwing some spray paint into the drilled holes(especially for yakees)
Got my roll bar in least night thanks to your guidance 🙌 always much appreciated Creg
I'm glad these videos are still up and helping out numerous Miata owners like me! My next project is to install a Hard Dog bar in my 01 LS. Love the channel and the videos. Thanks!
I just bought a black bird GT3 roll bar tonight... SO much more expensive- but from what I've seen and read, SO much better quality than what Hard Dog has to offer. So excited!!!
I think this is the one thing you can do to any miata and it won't hurt its resell value. Great looking kit!
rambow70 it will hurt it if it’s not done properly....
Finally an NB!
That drill bit rig was hilarious lmao. Dope Tapatio shirt too.
Yesterday I was searching your channel for a roll-bar how to and today I wake up to this glorious video. Thanks Greg!
I watched the whole video and dont even got a MX 5 :D ! nice video dude greetings from Germany :)
Ich auch, aber bald...
A ballcock shank washer?
Definitely at the top of my "to-do" list! Thanks for proving that this can be a 1 man job.
PROTIP: Rent or borrow an impact gun, and not just for drilling. The nuts are all lock nuts, which is great for having them not back out over time, but a pain in the ass to install if you have to tighten them with a 6" socket and a box wrench.
This looks like an M1 sport bar(?). The install is different for each of their models as I found when installing my Ace and tried to use this video as a guide (mainly when it comes to front holes near the seatbelt tower, this mounted in front of it while mine mounts on the side. Also had to cut more out of the shelf and in a different area). Still gave me a good idea of what to expect, though.
I see more rain in your videos than I did the entire 3 years I lived there as a kid.
100% chance of rain tonight, lol.
I've done some research and a lot of people say that rollbars are actually less safe for daily driven Miatas than not having one. I guess the fear is getting rear ended and crushing your skull against the metal bar. I saw people saying that even with the addition of foam padding it wouldn't really be enough to cushion your head without a helmet. I suppose one has to figure whether rolling over or getting rear ended is more likely. I'd like to know your thoughts on this, because I only did a little bit of research on the subject and it scared me out of installing a rollbar on my NA.
It depends, I put aftermarket seats on my Miata and my head doesn’t go pass the seat. Might be a tall person problem .
Only need to drill one hole from the top and use the backing plate for the other holes as template from the bottom. I also like to add a RTV seal around the bolt holes on the backing plate to prevent water intrusion.
what a perfect time to release this video as I just ordered a roll bar yesterday
I subscribed to Greg's channel when I found this video soon after I got my 91. The editing around the small details, the trim clips, etc is great. BTW great t-shirt.
Incredible video, thank you for making this. Clear, detailed, and to the point.
This channel is highly underrated. Very helpful videos, keep it up!.
My TR Lane GPV arrived just yesterday, this video helps a lot as it's almost the same. Thx dude!
I have an emerald green 2000 NB! I need to put a rollbar in it already... Nice video, Greg! Makes Mondays just a little bit more enjoyable.
hmm, i've taken more of those out than installed them. If not doing crazy driving, there's a lot of negatives having that roll bar behind. Most of them barely allow the top to be folded down. And if it has a glass rear window, it definitely won't allow it to fold down and stow. They also eat up a lot of the room behind the seats, so limited capacity.
Nice video. I'm glad I have my rollbar in already cause watching this video reminded me of how much of a pain it was to install
Yep, I wish mine went in that easy... I went with the M2 Hard Core Hardtop double diagonal.
Yeah it took me like a whole day to do it. I have a blackbird fabworx rollbar so there were a couple spacers I had to grind down. I only had an angle grinder and pliers so it took like an hour just to do that
+Patrick I REALLY do not enjoy installing roll bars.
don't talk to me or my boss' son ever again
Prepping to install the Ace Bar in my '99 MX5. Great Instructions! Love your sense of humour! Thanks
Love how every video you do happens to coincide with the project I'm doing the following weekend
Great content. And what a good way to show all of that goes into the design of a car.
Thanks for making this man! Roll bar is on my list for my Miata. Finally got my new top and fly wheel showing up really soon. Still need to get coil overs, wheels and roll bar for sure. Cant wait to see more videos, keep up the awesome work! :)
i live about 30 minutes away from where hard dog is based in King North Carolina. great people at their unassuming garage. they let me pick up my roll bar straight from them! would recommend hard dog to anyone!
Nice looking bar. Lots of work.
This is awesome Greg! Planning to get my own roll bar soon! Thanks so much!!
Great video! Most videos only cover half of what you mentioned. I'm thinking about getting me a roll bar for a while already but they're so expensive.
That looks exactly like my car! Same year, color, and wheels. Dang.
Hey Greg i believe those rear tires on the NB are on backwards. It looks like the rotational tires need swapped. :)
Add something about Roll Bar Padding. Should be SFI rated not swimming pool "noodles" This is VERY IMPORTANT ! Here is something: "Note: SFI-rated foam padding is designed for installation between the helmet and the roll bar. This padding is extremely stiff and rigid. It does not give except in very hard impacts. It is intended to cover only one side of the bar (the side between the bar and your helmet)." Or anywhere you or your passenger's head might come in contact with the bar. It is about safety after all.
I've gotta disagree about a roll bar being the one mod every Miata needs. The NB I recently bought came with a very nice Hard Dog double diagonal bar, that I just removed for safety reasons.
If I sat upright in my seat, my head was literally resting against the bar, virtually guaranteeing a head injury even in a minor accident. But even if you think your head is far enough from the bar to prevent hitting it, I guarantee it's not. Bodies move and stretch and bend far more in an accident than people think, and the chances of smacking your skull on a hard steel bar seems far too great a risk in exchange for the reduced risk in a much less likely rollover accident.
Roll bars are meant to be used with a helmet and preferably harnesses. If your car isn't spending more time on the track than the street, you're making your car less safe by installing a roll bar, and I'll stand by that statement.
Plus the rigidity benefits are overstated IMO. After I removed my bar I haven't really noticed any difference in structural rigidity, though I haven't driven it to 9 or 10/10ths since the removal. But backing out of driveways at an angle and the like I haven't felt a bit of difference.
On top of all that I dropped a chunk of weight and gained more usability in the parcel shelf, AND I'm able to get my seat back reclined a bit more which the roll bar prevented me from doing.
So yeah, roll bars are just a waste in street Miatas IMO and are likely making the occupants less safe overall, and come with other downsides. I say forget them for a street car.
These videos are amazing! Keep em coming Greg
Again! Such fantastic content! Next purchase for my NB2 for sure!
I sure would like to see you do more wrenching on an NB, particularly a 99 model :-)
rockin the tapatio shirt! 😂😂
Looks so cool, but I'm still nervous about it turning a minor rear end accident into a fractured skull. They really dont seem safe without a helmet, especially if you're tall like me :(
Boosted Autos nah you'll be aight
They have two designs. One is scca spec that sits theee inches about the seat and very close to the head. These are not recommended for street use and you said about a minor rear end turning into a serious brain injury. The other design site further away from the head and is a little bit lower. These are labeled street use
So thats when you put rollbar foam/Padding around it. Same sorta stuff that a pool noodle is made out of.
Das ist besorgnis erregend wie der typ den wagen verunstaltet
had an oldschool carpassionchannel vibe. liked it mucho
+tehpillemannerator I thought so too haha. I'm like wow anything outside the engine studio just feels ghetto now
Thanks so much for making this! Planning on installing mine within the month. Perfect timing!
Great video as always man. You make everything look easy!
Would you make a video on NB Passenger Airbag Module replacement
Could you tell the sub category of hard dog roll bar you installed? There’s a lot of different ones. Love the channel bruh. Your the reason I bought a Miata, and I couldn’t be happier!
Wooh that was rough, but entertaining. Seemed like more work then the bar I put in my s2000.
this music is lit just like that shirt lol and have you tried chicken instant ramen with tapatio and limon it's so good!
THank You! You just showed me something I didn't know I needed!
Greg! Axle stands on mud! Oooosh! Knew a man who got crushed under a car doing that!careful bro !
Great video 👍
I am wondering whether the seatbelts are working fine after changing the top bolt position ?
Did it has an impact on how smoothly it rewinds ?
Nice work man, but you should get a cut off wheel/die grinder. Cleaner sheet metal cuts, but I'm sure you know that. Thanks for the quality vids.
Love you vids man! Wish you uploaded more often. Ever considered starting a Miata car club ? You could get more content. Hoon with the homies. Squad up! 😂
Damn son what are you talking about? 7:24 It tequires 12inch drill bit? Wut? Seriosly drill bit size as Mini stock wheels?
Length, not girth.
@@deeeeeds that's what she said ....
Well done. The video was edited to be exactly what was needed for the install.
Greg you need to buy you one of those electric wrachets,
any roll bar should be padded with SFI 45.1 padding! you're giving a place to hit your head in a crash! pad it with the proper closed cell padding!
Dope beats in this video.
Sick job bro!!! love your content.
Nice video, I just got an 01 miata and it think it has the same roll bar, only issue is the top seat belt harness/roller was never removed so the seatbelt doesn’t retract easily-_- I noticed you had a long bolt and spacer for support at the top of the seatbelt mounting, do you know where I can get that bolt/washer/spacer combo? I’m assuming I gotta loosen the whole roll bar to relocate that seat belt. Thanks!
you had me with the Tapatio Tee shirt.. awsome..
Great video thanks. What make/model bar did you use.
Looks like you don't have any problems with the glass rear window.
I would like to get a roll bar, but I am 6'2", and I'm so big that my head basically touches my top all the time. If I got one, I think I would be putting my head in danger. My head is completely above the headrest of the miata
Beau if na or nb get a hardtop and a hard top specific rollbar might work for you
I got some roll bar padding for mine.
You can also get a seat with a taller headrest, or cut out the bottom of your existing seat "foamectomy".
Mayjaplaya just adding padding is very dangerous without a helmet. but +1 on foamectomy
You're right to be concerned. Rolling a Miata is very rare, but getting rear-ended is extremely common. If you're taller than 5'10", your putting yourself in danger of banging your head on the rollbar if you stop suddenly or get hit. Rollbar padding will help a little but it will not save you. Unfortunately, your options are either to wear a helmet always (illegal in many states and uncomfortable) or try and find seats with a higher back and headrest that will protect your skull.
I'm 6'2" and I have a facelift NB with a rollbar and a race seat bolted through the floor and its fine.
May I add... unless you’re tall, is it the thing every Miata needs. Had one. Hit my brain on it a few too many times
Dude that shirt tho! Tapatío on point!
that 12-inch drill bit is the most American thing that I've ever seen
I need to go back and fix mine this weekend😅
Holy rust batman!. Great video!
Oh man I thought that was the replacement for B&B... how does that install work with the hardtop? Nice work BTW, keep it up G.
Mark
Hey thanks for the video, helped big time! How did you tighten the 6 bolts on the upper back plates? I can't seem to hand tighten them with a socket wrench, it's just super hard to turn. Did you use a drill or something to tighten them down?
ooh. nice. i need to get me a rollbar for my NB MX5!
Love it! Nice work.
99 in green mica the best Miata !
scoobygms210 Grace Green Mica to be exact
I bought a rollbar yesterday. The timing is creepy man. lol.
Hey nice...how long did that Take? Good job on explanation...
there is a lot more that goes on putting a roll Barr on than I thought
Wait what. You have an impact, and yet you use your manual wrench? Proper badass
André Baumgartner 😅😅 mostly for 2 reasons: I just enjoy doing everything by feel, and also to show that you can do all these mods with just basic hand tools!
Hey Greg, I'm getting a hard dog rollbar soon and was wondering if instead of bolting in all the spots you bolted, could i instead weld the plates onto the car? disregarding that i wont be able to remove it
good shit greg
this is excellent! thanks for this
I drive an nbfl or 2.5, I always wonder how they feel different or the same as the NA miata? Since I never drove both.
They're quite similar since they are essentially the same car. NA steering feels slightly better but the NB chassis feels more solid to me. I personally picked up a 10AE NB after driving about 10 different NAs, NB1s, and NBFLs. It felt best to me and I also liked the six-speed. I also couldn't find a really good example of an NA, all had something wrong with them.
great vid! what size drill bit did you use?
DoctorAsian 3/8"
I have a 2004 Mazda Miata LS with a Bose speaker package. I have the little Bose speaker set up behind the seats. Will that interfere with a roll bar? Thank you in advance.
GOOD JOB! Well done!
Roll Bar is #1 the windshield will fold.
have you dealt with the seatbelt getting stuck after install the seatbelt reel back on?
another great video thank you
around how much time does it take to do this install? I'm now really interested in adding one to mine! btw love the Tapatio shirt.
+Fam4sta Give yourself an entire day. It's not a quick install; even after doing 3 it's still about my least favorite part to install. But the results are so worth it.
To remove interiorclips, just use a bended fork. :)
Love that shirt man
Is it the camera angle or did he come *this* close to scratching the paint with the rollbar during the intro?
What is the purpose of the black tube spacer and dish washer that goes next to the seatbelt hole? The rest of my bar is in but I cannot find a use for it.
If people think a cheap roll bar held on by a few bolts is going to save you in a crash they are deluded. The only things that will save you is a full motorsports spec roll cage, a helmet and a harness. This is more likely do you harm as it collapses. You are better off just not driving in a manner likely to cause you to end up on your roof.
Jabber 1974 And what about the multiple overturns that have occurred leaving these SCCA/NASA approved bars in tact? Against an overturn without a bar where the windshield collapses 100%?
Whats the reasoning behind the owner getting the single-diagonal over the double diagonal or the "x" bars? I got an M1 hardcore hardbar for my NA8 with the "x" pattern because I felt it is the safest design of the available patterns because in the case of a roll the hit would be spread along the bar a bit more evenly. Just my thoughts on that. Thanks :)
+Guerrin Love Just a little better visibility, but stronger than not having any diagonal.
That tapatio shirt is legit bruh! I gotta get me one.
