Timelapse Start to Finish: Building a Cozy Off Grid Cabin...100% Solo.

- Have you ever dreamed of building a cozy cabin in the middle of nowhere? Stop dreaming and get building! Well, watch this first, THEN get building!
I built this beautiful off grid Spur Cabin 100% solo, over the course of 11 months. If I can do it, I'm confident you can, too. It's a 12 x 16 cabin with a loft, tucked away in the mountains near Red Moose Ranch, where we will eventually build our permanent residence.
This timelapse video boils the cabin build down to about 57 minutes. From digging the first hole for the foundation footings, to the final brush stroke of stain on the porch, you'll enjoy a minute or two of every step. I don't use any super-complicated or expensive tools, just the basics. And many materials that I use are leftover, repurposed, reclaimed, or recycled.
Is this a "How-to" video? Not from my view. I mostly want to inspire you to dream big, then do big. I won't claim that what I do or what I use is the absolute best, but what I do works great for me. Hopefully you'll agree that the result speaks for itself. Let me know!
As a bonus, this video offers the perfect amount of stunning mountain scenery and cool, relaxing music. Not only will you want to sit back and enjoy every minute, don't be surprised if you're inspired enough to start planning a project of your own.
Because this video is abbreviated and fast-paced, you may have a ton of questions. That's good! Feel free to ask, or simply keep an eye out for a deep dive build video that is in the works, where I'll add commentary as to the "hows and whys" of building the Spur Cabin.
Question: What is YOUR favorite part of this cabin build?
Thanks for watching @LifeontheMoose !

What part of the Spur Cabin, or build process, do YOU like the best?
Every episode 😊
Ok I’m hooked nice build for sure. Will have to watch more thanks for sharing your build. Was this your idea or a shed kit?
@@barbarawiley1237 Hey alright! It’s a good thing to be hooked on!
No plans, just my wife’s and my ideas.
Thanks for being here!🙏
I love everything about this project! I dream of one day being able to replicate it.❤
@@unazheng3392 You can! 🙏
My daughter was born just before the first video I saw in this series. It was the cool floor insulation system you built. I got to watch progress every week as she grew in the NICU (born at 24 weeks gestation - 1 lb, 10.8 oz). Now she’s almost 13 months old, and healthy as can be! These videos were a welcome escape from the hospital setting for the five months we were there. I’ll never be able to truly express how thankful I am to you for that.
I'm so happy for you and your baby girl, i say hallelujah to her ❤
Wow what an ordeal for your family! I’m so glad it’s behind you and everyone is healthy. I’m honored and touched that this little channel could serve as your escape. Bless your family.🙏
I'm Ochea Jonil, a video editor specializing in long-form content for UA-cam and Facebook. With over 5 years in the industry, I've honed my skills right here in the Philippines. I love crafting videos that grab attention and tell a story. Let's work together to create something awesome!
Glad your Daughter is doing well!

These types of videos are popular because they allow viewers to see the entire building process in a short, visually engaging format.
Indeed!
And for those who really want the details of the process, the individual videos are there for the viewing. Thanks for watching!🙏
Geezus, my muscles are aching just watching this gentleman work like this. Bravo!
Ha thanks! Glad you watched.🙏
Fantastic, a fantasy of mine.
If any younger person watches this, plz don't wait too long to get started. Time flies, then you may be too old to do it.
God bless us all.
Agreed! Just do it!
No fireplace?
@@LifeontheMoosei want to but how do i acquire all these skills? any suggestions or just UA-cam it all haha
yes that's me to old to do it You need to be fit to live out there but that guy is a real professional and makes it look easy
Your attention to detail; the lay of the woodgrain, the natural branch detail on the loft, the natural edge on cabinets and shelves. With all of that fresh wood, I imagine it smells amazing inside the finished cabin.
It does! The smell is one of my favorite things about it. Sorry I can’t share that aspect!
I appreciate you watching.🙏
Evidentemente es un experto profecional ! Pero no falta el baño ? O lo construye después? He visto su video ,desde Uruguay 🇺🇾 ,en el sur de América! Saludos !
@@EstelaTechera-ph2js No bathroom right now! Thank you for watching!
At the age of 69 I was doing the same thing and was pushing myself the whole time. So at 71I can relate and say I envy you but I don't miss doing it anymore. Great job sir enjoy yourself now sit back and have a refreshing drink what ever it may be.
Tried to give you a thumbs up but it didn't highlight so 👍 I hope this makes it up for you
This will work! Thank you! I appreciate your kind words.🙏
eucurtocarrosecasas.blogspot.com/
The cabin build was done extremely well. The craftmanship was my favorite part.
Hey alright! I appreciate that.🙏
What a breath of fresh air, to watch a cabin video of someone who knows what they are doing. I have watched so many DYI cabin videos that my face had a perminate cringe on it until today. Great little cabin and greate video.
I very much appreciate your kind words! And thank you for tuning in.🙏
Yes I agree. This guy knows how to build.
I’m in love with this guy. He knows what he is doing. I purchased a spec house in 1978 and there wasn’t a one board, joist or corner measured or secured properly. The electric boxes had no wires so no electricity and that is just the beginning. We had to tear most everything apart and redo the place. It took 15 years since we both worked. It was difficult to sell 3 years ago because so much of me was in it! I really enjoy your work!!
Wow you are so kind! Sounds like you put a lot of love and sweat into that house, too. I appreciate you being here!🙏
Hurray for you. It's so good to see someone on UA-cam build a cabin the right way.
Thank you so much!🙏
There is a lot of heart & soul in this cabin and some beautiful craftmanship. You should be very proud of what you've created. Thank you for sharing it.
Ah… keen perception! Yes, a LOT of heart and soul. Thank YOU for watching.🙏
I watched the whole video and i'm stunned to see the build process. This is just amazing. Its my fantasy to build off grid cabin
Aw thanks so much! I’m glad you watched. Now make that fantasy come true..🙏
You have my Admiration!! True one man Craftsman!!!
I am honored! Thank you for your kind words.🙏
Hi Patrick
I watched all episodes and now this one, I liked how you sat back at the end, I'm sure you felt so proud and quite right too. .......Ray H. England U.K.
I admit, I did. Thank you for watching and for being here.🙏
It is the greatest feeling to stand back and say you build that all alone.
Nice job, well done
Thank you! It is very rewarding.🙏
@@LifeontheMoose I also just came from a farm resort setting wear I negotiate a long-term retirement lease agreement and will also be building my own A frame wooden home . I am in South Africa
@@wow.sailor. That sounds awesome. Keep me posted!
The use of actual tree branches and pillars 👌 those types of touches add 1000 percent comfort, great job and build. I’ll be building mines soon near Mount Shasta.
Enjoyed watching you build this cabin patrick .
Didn't realize you kept me busy every Friday for 44 weeks :)
Well done job
I appreciate you being here!🙏
You sir, are a true craftsman.
I LOVE the spot you picked to build on. I Love the way the land is. There are trees here and there - but mostly open also. I dont like houses built buried in the trees. The land there is beautiful and you will get alot of light in the house and still have pretty views - perfect..
🙏
Absolutely beautiful! Thank you!
Thank YOU for watching!🙏
You are an incredible, patient, hard working, extremely gifted and talented home builder! Just a wonderful, beauteous creation!!!
Ah thank you! My wife would argue the ‘patience’ part…🤔🙏
The porch is stunning, I love the spindles. This journey has been amazing to watch! You are a master builder and such a hard worker! Love all of it!
Wow you are too kind! Thank you. 🙏 And thanks for watching!
That was the most satisfying video I have watched in a very long time.. I wish I had half your talent, and that is truly talent sir!
You’re too kind! I’d say less talent and more determination..🤔
Thanks so much for watching!🙏
I love watching someone who knows how to properly install and flash a window.
Thank you!😅🙏
A really nice job!
It’s definitely something I could see myself living in.
I’m more of a lakefront kind of guy but your surroundings are truly beautiful with views that millions would love to have!
Thanks for the time-lapse.
Indeed I’m fond of that view. Thank you for watching!🙏
I forgot about that really cool rebar bending trick you did with the tractor hitch. As a farmer in my youth I doff my very dirty straw hat to you.
(Nods head, bows slightly) why thank you!
Really love the "railing" you made for the loft- very creative!!!
Hey thanks so much! Glad you watched.🙏
I have watched this full video ,and I am amazed how one man can make a beautiful hut like that on his own. I wish I had this kind of skill as this would be a dream for me
Ah thank you! Skills can be learned and honed, dreams happen! 🙏
Nice finish to this project!! I liked the humble start of the cabin and the conclusion with you sitting outside looking at it with a coffee in hand!! Watching the wildlife running around was also a blessing!! Now enjoy your cabin!!
I will! I appreciate you taking the time to watch it.🙏
Absolutely gorgeous
I appreciate that!
I'm always amazed at how some people have a natural knowledge in how to do some things
Any “natural knowledge” I have has been self-taught. But thank you! 🙏
You aren’t born with it. You have to learn it.
@@LifeontheMoose😊😊
You made that looks too easy! Having the proper tools is such a key component.
You’re right! Thank you for tuning in.🙏
Well done! From the production of your video and the amazing carpentry skill displayed. Learned a lot…and thoroughly enjoyed it! Hope you savor every second you have to enjoy the blessings and skills God gave you!!
Very kind words! Although I don’t consider myself an amazing carpenter, I am filled with appreciation. Thank you!🙏
This cabin looks so cozy and inviting! I love the use of natural materials and the open floor plan. It would be the perfect place to relax and escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Thank you! It is an escape for sure. I appreciate you watching.🙏
Lovely cabin, beautiful country, great video! ❤
Thank you so much!🙏
I find your video extremely helpful and your details all the way down to covering the nail holes which I rarely see in many DIY videos. Thank you and keep up the great work.
Watched it all from the beginning! Twice now! Favorite part is the loft railings. Thank you for all the hard work and great jokes😂!
Thank you so much! I appreciate you watching.🙏
Amazing. I love watching skilled craftsmen showing how it is done. Thank you!
Ah you are too kind! I appreciate you watching.🙏
Well nothing like a trip down “Ole Memory Lane” Nice idea Patrick and great to see you again.
Well, till next time… you take care of yourself Patrick.
Hey thanks! Take care.🙏
Simply beautiful.
I can't add to the many well deserved kudos already expressed in the comments. That said, I'm compelled to make this comment myself. I myself am a card carrying member of the Lone Ranger club. Before I retired I even went out to sea alone to pocket a few extra bucks doing yacht deliveries. I hope, I sincerely hope while you were doing your spectacular work there was someone standing by with a box of Bandades. I did notice towards the end of your video, you had started useing a push stick with your tablesaw.
I also noticed that at the end of the video you, (?) were sitting in a chair with a cup of coffee admiring your handy work. A well deserved cup of coffee. Thank you Sir.
Ah…thank YOU! Yacht deliveries…holy cow! I’ll take a steep roof…
No one holding bandaids here, tho!😅
I appreciate you watching and commenting.🙏

A true master at work.
Yes, it’s true! But master? 🤔 Thank you so much for watching.🙏
Job,, well done!!!

Thank you!🙏
Loved watching you build your cabin.
I’m so glad you did! Thank you. 🙏
I always thought the way you assembled the floor system was a smart move...that was the first episode i ever watched...
Same!
And me too
One of the few times we get to praise the UA-cam algorithm
I’m glad you found the channel, one way or another!🙏
This is one of the best videos I have ever seen on UA-cam, those woodworking skills are unbelievable...
Wow what a compliment! (Tell your friends!)
Seriously, I appreciate you watching.🙏
Sweet. No wood stove?
I wish..:a permitting issue. Thanks for watching!
Looks ridiculously warm, cozy, well built. Heck of a well-done job.
Thank you! I appreciate that.🙏
I'm so impressed by your abilities!! What a beautiful job you have done all by yourself!! 😊
Ah thanks so much! I’m grateful you watched.🙏
Wow, this timelapse is absolutely mesmerizing! Watching the cabin come to life in such a beautiful setting is incredibly inspiring. You can really feel the love and effort that went into this project!
Hey that means a lot! I’m grateful you get it! And I appreciate you watching.🙏
Embracing DIY projects allows creativity to flourish, turning ordinary materials into unique expressions of personal style.
💯Indeed! Glad you’re watching.🙏
So many genius ideas here, like metal on the lower portion to protect from heavy snows and heaven forbid fire, tiger striped wood on the ceilings and counters, and when you made a screw spray template for the outlet screws, I thought, geez, he knows a few things! Nice build and great views.
And the balcony railing design! So randomly great!
Ah I wouldn’t use the word genius! But thank you for your kindness. Glad you watched.🙏
The part of the build that I love the most is that your front, side and back yard has amazing scenery and deers
Me too!
LOVED your timelapse! You do beautiful work and the attention to detail and craftsmanship is inspiring!
Thank you so much! I love that you loved it.🙏
The part i loved most about this is that you were resourceful and got creative with doing it all by yourself. It gave me a few ideas for my own build i plan on doing in the near future. great job 👏
Hey that means a lot. I’m honored to have helped in any way. Thank you! 🙏
Came out GREAT!
Hey thank you! Glad you watched.🙏
Hi Pat,
Just caught your time lapse video. Wow, what can I say.
The Professional skill, precision & attention to detail is second to non.
No cutting corners here.
Thoroughly enjoyed watching you work with the linseed oil. It brings out the most beautiful grains of the wood to life.
Thank you from England.❤️
Ah what kind words! Thank you for watching. 🙏
I like the whole cabin so cozy.
I appreciate that.🙏
Enjoyed this build video immensely. I silently said “Oh no” when you put white screws in the black outlet cover and then a contented sigh of approval when you painted them black! Well done.
Ha! Glad you caught that detail. Thank you!🙏

Yes, you are a perfectionist. No short cuts. All well worth the effort. I totally relate to your methods. Loved the video. Excellent job!!
Thank you so much! I appreciate the kind words, and you watching.🙏
To watch your video is therapeutic, I dream to reach at least the half of the skill you have, thank you man!
Hey thank you! I consider myself more stubborn than skillful…just made myself figure it out. Glad you watched.🙏
Your work is incredible! I spent the entire night watching your videos and am now a huge fan. Thank you for sharing your talent with the world.🌻
Wow thank you! I appreciate you being here. 🙏
adding the osb to the joist and flipping it over is awesome. I've been doing wrong all these years. Thanks

Awesome job with the cabin and the video. Wow what an amazing piece of land. Love the views and your "pets"!!
Thanks so much! I’m blessed, and appreciate you watching.
Right from the start, I love how you framed the floor with the board backing on the underside before you flipped it. I would do it like that too.
Hey thanks!! Glad you watched.🙏
You've done a lovely job - both of building and presenting. And the environment is stunning! Such a beautiful place.
You’re so kind! I appreciate you being here.🙏
What a thing of beauty!
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching. 🙏
Hello Patrick, I just wanted to say I tore down an old barn that was well over 100 years. I saved all the wood. I didn’t do anything with it yet but I will.
Hey fantastic! Let me know where that wood ends up.
Definitely built to last!!!
Love the floor, sealed and torsion box strong!!!!
👍🏻Thank you!🙏
Do it once and do it right! Some fine, fine work here, thanks!
Hey thanks so much!🙏
AMAZZZZING!!! You’re so gifted!!! It’s beautifully done!!!! ❤❤❤
You’re so kind! Thank you for watching.🙏
Great stuff, I’m American midwest born and bred but travelled the world extensively thru the military and business world. Interesting how the legacy of the ‘cabin in the woods’ still resonates so deeply with me (not a maga though). Thank you!
Another Midwesterner! I appreciate you watching.🙏
I’ve been a carpenter for 40 years. Great job. I wish I was there to help you.
That means a lot coming from you. Thank you!🙏
Great way to see the whole build.
Loved watching. Also like the outdoor kitchen videos
LOVE watching you doing the ceiling and sealing the wood. Looks great
Thank you so much!🙏
Fantastic work - breathtaking area - a paradise in real nature.
Thank you! I’m blessed, for sure, and fortunate to have you here.🙏
After one year following you, watching from the first video of this cabin and going back to the older videos sometimes, I confess that I don't have one specific moment.
I like the content, how you explain everything and how you inspire us, and how you make us feel close.
And that's the reason I watch you every weekend. 😊
You make us feel as old friends and it's the best! My wife always say to me: "I can imagine you and Patrick sitting and chatting. It would be a long conversation." 😊
Many times I thought on chat to you by e-mail or WhatsApp, but I know the Brazilian and the American culture are different and I respect it.
Thanks for being with us every weekend and share your experience with us.
Hugs from your Brazilian friend.😊
That means a lot, Ronaldo. Your words are too kind! I totally get that feeling of friendship that’s developed in this community. Hopefully we can communicate one way or another other. I appreciate you being here! Hugs back🙏
@@LifeontheMoose Hi, Patrick. I hope everything is find there. I sent an email to you, to the channel's email, with my contacts. Hugs.
Wow!!! it is a life work of art and experienced just love it. though I dont build nor had build anything, I admire those that truly know their thing. watching these vids teaches, and encourage me to build my own house. I have a farm shed ( 22x12) that I want to turn it into a 4BD with a (22x9) decking that face the river.
Thank you! I’m honored to provide any encouragement. Sounds like a good project. Let me know how it goes!🙏
That is the cutest little cabin! Thank you....really appreciate how much I've added to my understanding in just one hour of viewing your distilled skills :-)
