True, just rented a SUV in San Ignacio, it was on empty, 250BD later. Died the next day on the side of the road. Was not reimbursed for the full tank. Never again!!!!!!
Thanks for the VIN hint. I am renting the same vehicle from the company in question and the VIN is clean. It's a 2015 vehicle, we both did a sorrow walk around and nothing was found odd. Drove 300 miles in Belize so far with no issues. Sometime bad luck can hit you at any time. In the past I rented mostly low cost local rental cars; Maui, Curacao, Bonaire, Greece, etc and never had issues. I use VISA for my insurance and they are awesome (so far). Who knows, maybe a rodent got into the woman's car fuel line or electronical wiring and caused a spark/fire. Again, sometimes bad luck or judgement/choices can hit you hard. Hope she will not have financial issues.
Good stuff. Rentals are expensive there. I almost went with a local company based on some reviews, but once I saw the age of the vehicles, I changed my mind. Plus, the price difference wasn't huge. The 1 thing I didn't like about the rental experience was related to the chipped windshield policy...it was pretty weird to me, but whatever. AMEX would have to handle that dispute if it happened.
