The last 30 seconds the show started coming off the rails! They cut Tod's mic and Will was ready to drag race Gale "The Snail" Banks in a heads up, winner takes all, Pink Slips Race. Every truck needs Banks "Super Chill Cooling Fins". Will is up 10 points for being a true player hater, we solute you Will.
My '01 6spd Cummins(quadzilla,150hp inj, 63mm)has been living on a KY clutch single disk for around 4yrs with no issues daily driving or towing. I've been highly impressed with it
Absolutely belive in buy once cry once and like you guys Talk sense into over building pros and cons 👍 47rh setup you guys helped me build Absolutely rips and shifts nicely for a fully built fmvb
Thank you guys for all the great info you covered in this video. Almost 2 years of ownership with my 04 Ram High Output w/ NV5600, doesn't need a clutch yet but you definitely saved me a lot of forum reading to know to stay far away from a single disc. I was previously looking for a 12v 2nd gen truck (except 98 w/ 53 block) to be pre smog as a resident of everyones favorite CONifornia. The facebook marketplace gods must have been looking out for me the day I stumbled across my single rear wheel 3rd gen with the 305 H.O. Pro tip for any fellow Californian's looking for a 3rd gen Cummins, don't waste your money on a California model truck and for the LOVE OF GOD, do not buy something that takes DEF or has a DPF. Your bank account and your wife will both be much happier.
I bought a new 1992 Dodge 5.9 12 valve with 5 speed manual and we didn’t have EGT gauges but I watched my water temp gauge so when towing my camper and the temp gauge shows the 1/4 mark on gauge and when we got in the in the big hills and temp would creep up to the 12:00 mark I would drop a gear and temps would drop quick right back to the 1/4 mark and this worked great and that truck is a 12 valve and it would not slow down it would just get louder and people would follow me to the truck stop and ask me how did you get that truck to sound like that and I always told them to remove muffler and your turbo is your muffler and if you wanted more motor sound just turn your exhaust out in frount of rear tire . And I mise the sound of a 12 valve and when I bought my 05 new and I was pissed that it didn’t sound like a 12 valve and it did not have locking hubs either !
Many 05' truck owners have converted to a center exit exhaust manifold simply to make their 24V Common Rail engine have an exhaust note more similar to the older 12v engines. This modification is commonly called a 2nd gen swap, but really means moving the turbo to a more centered location on the cylinder head with a new manifold. It's a ton of work and cost just to gain better exhaust sound, so, many opt for a different turbo upgrade as well to "justify" the expense! Happy Modding!
Great information. Now at 500 miles on my 04.5. Put in the 178/208 and BBI 0.1 injectors. Added the egt hole, but want to use tuner for gauge so just plugged for now. Just hoping for a safe tow rig that won't let me down. I'm glad you are covering these topics.
Upgrade for NV 4500 is the Tremec 4050! I’ve got the only 1 of its kind ! It’s a direct bolt up from nv4500, need to shorten rear driveshaft 3”. I got a custom built 1 3/8” input shaft made. Works absolutely amazing!
@@josenoyola9851 so, Tremec 1st is 6.16 2nd is 3.11 3rd is 1.71 4th 1-1 , 5th is .76 Nv4500 is 1st is 5.61, 2nd is 3.04, 3rd is 1.67, 4th 1-1, 5th is .75 , on the Tremec , 5th gear is counter shaft mounted, the synchros are carbon fiber, factory rated @ 600ft lbs torque, nv is 450, Silver Sport transmissions are working at putting parts lists and rebuild kits together for this trans. I’ve literally had my nv4500 apart 6 times in 5 years, decided to try this option out, very, very happy with how the top plate is made, and how crisp the shifting is. I’m close to 650hp, so far its been great, no problems.
@ppump24valve53 4500's are incredibly picky about endplay. Most guys slap a 1-3/8 input in and don't reshim. Also mainshaft should be done with a new 5th gear that is coated with Loctite 620. They are good transmissions that can take a lot of power but only when built correctly
@ I got the input shaft end play right, but 3rd gear synchros were always going out, and then I swapped out my aluminum tail housing for a cast 1, and apparently it wasn’t machined correctly, it ruined my main shaft splines and chomped 5th gear, because 5th is such a small diameter gear on the main shaft.. , I had the 5th gear lock nut, with three set screws with the 4locking tabs that goes on over the splines and red locktite, still didn’t hold, came loose, then I was completely done with the nv4500 , and the biggest things that sold me on the Tremec was all the gears were on 1 shaft before the rear bearing, and that bearing was held by the rear part of the case.
27:00 except while its slipping theres torque multiplication. You're losing power, but gaining torque. Every bit of slippage recirculates fluid through the torque converter and gives you a gear multiplication. So yeah it builds more heat, but it does help you pull the grade harder, because you have more torque.
Thanks guys, I’ve never heard anyone explain how to use an auto transmission that well and how to use the overdrive off button. Seems self explanatory, but apparently not even for the somewhat initiated.
Awsome info. Love it! How about a discussion on towing do's and don'ts with compounds. I run a fmvb 48re on a 5.9 and thought your comment on cylinder pressures when pulling the rpm down when climbing, interesting.
But what we need is pistons made like Cat does it. Cat has a two piece piston the top part that has the rings in it are made of steel the bottom 2/3 the skirts is aluminum and the wrist pin holds it all togather and we need to have this set up in my 5.9 cummins so you guys need to make them or can we cross with Cat and have that will my 5.9 so figure this out will help your drag truck or sled pull truck or just a tow rig ?
Glad you said that about standards im old school 18 spd cat twin turbo 15 liter kw propane ijection over 850 rwhp dyno to much to cool for sure at the top on the eisenhour had to drop out of high gear pulling a full load in the van trailer to must heat to cool so grab a couple gears and it would cool off threst of the way to top 80moh as long traffic is not on the road had police escort from dilliin once 😟😊
I remember back in 05-06 that "in the forums" something had changed when the 600 Series was built. Those engines were tested and could be opertated "all day at 1600 degrees" vs the early CR at 1250 with 1300 for seconds. Is there actually a difference in materials to allow that between the 2 eras of 5.9 common rails?
There are 2 common bowl designs for the common rails. The narrow bowl will take More Heat than the wide bowl. Some like the wide bowl to but all the pistons i have hurt were the wide bowl. I only play with narrow bowl stuff anymore.
I found banks twin ram made egts cooler, and i have a needle and seat controling a leak for the waste gate making boost sooner. I never get to 1200 when pulling my 23' x7' tall enclosed trailer full of tools. 97 12v afc live, power jet inj. Stock turbo which i can send to heaven any time.
I would have loved to hear your thoughts and opinions of an Allison Transmission swap. My 97 3500 dually 4X4 has the factory 47 in it but I like a manual and plan on a rebuilt/improved NV4500 soon. I also realize that I'm 54 and knees don't last for ever. I plan for this to be the last truck I'll ever need.
Thank you guys for all the information, just bonding what your guys opinion on the new piston coming out is? Manufactur is United mechine with the speed of air pistons?
I’ve never used any. I’m not really interested. I’m guessing it will be a passing fad. Crazy money for stock pistons with a coating and dimples. Now the total seal rings they use will be around for a long time….
A 6spd left a little to be desired for gear ratios. 10 spd seems to be a step too far with added complexity and extra gear shifts with negligible benefit. Does anyone build an 8HP that can handle 1000lb-ft?
The more boost at idle, the lower the idle fuel quantity required to maintain idle speed, it would get really really and probably have snappy throttle response! We do not know of anyone that has tried this. 8 bar would require a 1000+ HP engine running in the trailer to have enough excess airflow from it's turbo system to feed a throttle-less 5.9L diesel 8 bar at idle speed.
It has the mechanical ability for 2nd gear lockup, but you still need to command it electronically via a lockup switch, otherwise it will only lockup when the factory computer commands it.

18 Ram 5500. Tow Tune, D&J Stage 1 Head, Fleece Cheetah, Mishimoto Intercooler and Tubes. S&B Intake Grid Heater Delete. Truck pulls 25-30,000lbs daily. Never touch the mountains. Highest EGT I've seen is 1150°.

The 47RH do lock up in third gear by pcm with overdrive off. Love the conversations. You need to get Josh McCormick on sometime.
Watched all your podcast great stuff

How much of an RPM gap do you have from 3rd to 4th?
@ I think it’s actually less rpm change than nv4500., by a little bit. I had looked at that, and compared them.

Easy to see a part 2
Cooling, cold air intakes, intercoolers, other automatics (Allison etc)
Yes many more items we can cover for sure!

meyer, what is the whole recipe for the 6.1 stroker build? lets do a video on that??
A 6.7 crank with either custom length rods or milled pistons. They are awesome!

That’s crazy speed up that grade! So cool!
The gm hd nv4500 you have to shim the shaft cause I have one that I put a dodge Cummins bell housing on and the bigger shaft on
I have a single disk kevlar on one side ceramic on the other. Good manners for daily and towing so far.

Do you guys use Total Seal rings and the second rig is a gapless rink and does a fantastic job of keeping the soot out of you oil ?
My last few engine builds have used them and i like them a lot so far. Been using them in race trucks for years!

I have a friend who hit 1800 degrees egt every day for a year on a turned up 12 valve. The head gasket blew
Can you elaborate on the egr in the cam what engines came with this
04.5 thru 2007 5.9 Cummins
A 6spd left a little to be desired for gear ratios. 10 spd seems to be a step too far with added complexity and extra gear shifts with negligible benefit. Does anyone build an 8HP that can handle 1000lb-ft?
That is a great idea, but maybe someone else knows about an 8 speed option.
A I can't believe Josh loves on the other side of the lake from me
Can you build twinturbo cummins trailer compressor that will boost your towing truck? Would that work? 8bar boost at idle? Has anyone tried this?
The more boost at idle, the lower the idle fuel quantity required to maintain idle speed, it would get really really and probably have snappy throttle response! It has the mechanical ability for 2nd gear lockup, but you still need to command it electronically via a lockup switch, otherwise it will only lockup when the factory computer commands it.
Ok turning truck off in drive though !! And a new head and twin turbo ,
I can do a video on it
I see 1500 spikes frequently.
👍💪
Complains of people saying EGTs then says EGTs
Busted!
Just switch to an Allison transmission and be done with it.
😂 that's funny shit.
No it was ford for vgt then Dodge Chevy was last
Wrong! It was Ford 1st 2003- 6.0, then 2004 GM duramax lbz, then dodge 6.7 in 07
These videos are awesome 👍
All the southbend clutches I've used suck getting into 1st or reverse
On nv4500?
@ppump24valve53
4500 and 5600, never had a g56
Put it in second then first it seems to line up something so it goes in easier. I know you shouldn't have to do that but it works.
