    Great advice. With time in mind, at present your tutorials are the best on the internet, in my humble opinion. Far better than skate park lessons or what Braille has knocked out. I do like that skate park lessons delivers a gauge between beginner and advanced, typically speaking, before each lesson. But your honest deliveries carry so much more weight. Sincerity is what society lacks these days. In short I'm struggling to say, thank you!

    I think practicing shove it is harder than ollie. As what you said, so many variables, hard to match where I jump and where the board rotates. Anyway, very useful tips and your analysis is very logical! Well Done!

    I always love to break stuff down into smaller steps and be able to attribute mistakes to particular gaps that I can work on with more tailored exercises (this is exactly how I was taught music and how I teach myself languages), your tips allow me to do just that and they're honestly better teaching material than most if not all videos I've seen teaching tricks etc. Thanks a lot for posting those vids, you're seriously filling in a serious gap in skating theory and methodology.

    Going out today to employ some of these tips! I've been skating just over a year and half, and have been struggling with shuvs the WHOLE time... I go through phases where I land a couple and then won't land one again for months. At this point I think I have everything down pretty well but just lack confidence (strange considering I've never fallen that hard practicing this trick) because my back foot never makes it back on the board. Most times it lands JUST behind the board or sometimes my board lands directly on top of my foot, so I'm gonna try the knee touch jump to hopefully fix it. Thanks again for a great analytic and informative video!

      Good luck Ali! The shove it can be a surprisingly tough one to tackle, considering it is a "beginner" trick (which is..arguable if you ask me lol) but you got it. And sometimes taking a break helps too. I take trick breaks all the time when I need them haha Glad you liked the video though. Hope that helps!

      I sent a month on that trick. Carpet boarding helped a lot but for me the game changer was an Aron kyro tip. He said to keep your weight on your front foot when you jump. I actually landed the first one.
      I no longer do them that way but that was the point the trick started coming together.
      Sarah gave me some great advice not landing with my feet to close together.
      I think your progress is amazing.

    Yes..nice you mentioned the importance of being comfortable on your skateboard while it worked for you. You're rite i feel as skaters we feel the rush to learn tricks, which mite help us lose site of rolling around and just skating. Being comfortable on your board first will go a long way while helping your skateboarding in the long run, even if it's just being able to cruise a park or go down the street while rolling over and turning/swerving around things. All in all you can do both while having a blast😊

    Sorry for the comment spam but i gotta say that the way you explain tricks is the best because you know exactly how beginners think and you go really into detail. Most pro's teach tricks just on the surface. But body weight positioning etc. The way you explain it, is what makes the difference to landing tricks and really getting them down. Do you have a video on the strawberry Milkshake? Trying to learn this trick since i started skating, but i can't get my body weight transition right, when trying to jump back on the board after the spin. I always land on my heels.

    • @SarahParkMatott
      @SarahParkMatott  3 роки тому

      haha no problem! Glad you like the video and way I explain things. I always try to cover as much as I can in a way that could help. I never learned the strawberry milkshake myself actually. But, from what I know about the trick and the fact that you're landing on your heels, it's possible that you're leaning too far back with your shoulders when hopping off. Trying to jump back without leaning so much or trying to lead / lean forward with your shoulders when hopping back on. There is a part in the video when I talk about hippie jumps for bringing the back leg up. I would reference the hippie jumps I do onto and off of the deck.. Just drilling jumping back and forth while paying attention to your shoulders/body weight (not leaning too far in any direction) might help. The skill I talk about in this video ua-cam.com/video/aTSpdtsPCeI/v-deo.html might be a good one to work on. It's kind of similar with jumping off and on the no comply.

    Just a précision : You can open your front shoulder after you prepared your pop, at least a bit to roll straight smoothy after. Two arguments,
    1 - Opening the front shoulder when you have your legs side ways is not natural. So your front shoulder wanna go back over the board and it creates the opposite force to the pulling motion of the backfoot 🔃that stops your from overotate your body. The same goes with opening your front foot, when you lift it into the air it's gonna go back sideway.
    2 - You don't catch a shuvit when the board has done the full 180, you catch it at like 135 degrees so your front foot and shoulder are slightly opened to be sideway on the catch in the air while the back stayed sideway to match the full 180 of the board.
    Your shoulders has to be over your board on the catch and the landing but not at the pop. Mathematically it's an equation so multiple responses are possible. :)

    One thing about flipping the board. You will pinch your trucks when the board leans, which happens when you lean forward. That’s why I think that beginners benefit from tighter trucks for shuvits, while pros flip the board right underneath and can have a looser setup because they don’t lean.

  • @diddymelone2265
    @diddymelone2265 2 роки тому

    hey Sarah: So 11 months later I improved alot, also with shuvits, got them quite consistently while rolling.
    however: lately I got myself some ACE AF1's and they are fantastic! however, as you probably know, they have a super good turn, and yeah it led to the exact problem again.
    I landed primo so much, cause the board was flipping and it got me scared, cause I hurt myself.
    now I am slowly getting back to getting the technique down how to not flip the board by accident, but now I found your video again and its funny how I can make such good use of the same advice, but now the situation is just more extreme so to speak, because I never had trucks, that would turn so insanely well.
    they arent even crazy lose in terms of the kingpin nut, but they pinch so nice.
    anyway, amazing trucks, but for shuvits they really made me sweat again.

    • @SarahParkMatott
      @SarahParkMatott  2 роки тому +1

      Isn’t it funny how that can happen? How a small difference, like changing trucks or something, can have such a big affect on your skating? Hope you can get used to them again soon!

    • @diddymelone2265
      @diddymelone2265 2 роки тому

      @@SarahParkMatott yeah its crazy how much difference that can make :D
      by the way: the actual reason I even bought these trucks was this: I am pretty tall at 6.5 and wanted a long board (not a longboard, a long skateboard^^) and I found one with 32.6 and 15" wheelbase.
      however the wheelbase turned out to be too long for my old trucks, because they sit around the same length thunders would, so they extent the wheelbase even further, making the deck feel super heavy and the turn absolutely crap.
      then I found the AF1 for sale and I heard they have a wheelbase even shorter than indys and an equally better turn even, so I got em and yeah they make this deck really really good.
      I actually think that on a shorter wheelbase deck the trucks would probably be too squirly for me, so yeah its insane, but also alot of fun getting those combinations to work so well together.
      as for my shuvits, I am getting there.
      its just a mental blockade for now and when I do not pay enough attention, I sometimes flip the board by accident, but overall its getting better and I am glad.

    Hi Sarah, it is me again. I still cant land my shove its - I think I worked on them since June but hey maybe I lac the talent to do one. With at 06:04 you mention the difference between the scoop and the shove - do you push the talk down to get the friction off the back wheels for the pivot? Or do you just lean a bit forward and shove directly behind you?

    • @SarahParkMatott
      @SarahParkMatott  2 роки тому

      It's not talent, Emir! So, don't worry. When I was a kid, I tried shove its for years and never once landed one. I just didn't get to put in the consistent practice I personally needed to do one.
      I push both down and back! It's a balance. Pushing down will help the board's back wheels come up and pushing back will help the rotation. Finding the balance takes some time though. I'd start by pushing back and then slowly adding more pressure down while pushing back!

    Hello im new and got one question with penny board before i use it for travel since i have been praticing when going up a curb or something is it enought to lift my front wheels or do i have to do something for back end as well because i can ride but i hate curbs rn 😅 the small ones of course

    • @SarahParkMatott
      @SarahParkMatott  3 роки тому +1

      I've never ridden a penny board before, but you'll probably want to lift your back wheels a little as well. Big soft wheels will get up easier even with a little lift. But you probably don't want to run those wheels into the curb. I'd start slow and see how much you need to lift. :)

    Hi Sarah I have a question, when I shuv it I can get it like half the time stationary, but while moving I land on the board but the front foot always pushes the board into a rocket position as I land, stopping the board. Do you know what I can do to fix this? Thanks a lot 🙂

    hi Sarah - perfect timing for my son who is learning shove its - do you have a tip for how to get all four wheels off the ground?

    • @SarahParkMatott
      @SarahParkMatott  3 роки тому +1

      That's tough. It's just a matter of building up and getting a feel for how much strength you need to use. How hard down and back you have to push. A lot of trial and error 💪 You don't need to do anything special though to make that happen. If a lot of the wheels drag, you can try to push more down. If you're accidentally popping or flipping, you can try and push more back. Just gotta find that balance :D

      hm..that's not a trick I've practiced consistently, but I have gotten a few. Fakie shove to revert is of course great. I do that too to keep getting a feel for it. But, you can work on fakie shove it body varials too! That'll help you get a feel for the shove and body varial part. I'd work on those two tricks for a few sessions or while warming up to try fakie big spins💪

      @@binglebop5877 if it’s going out in front of you and your back foot lands on the ground with nothing under it, I’ve found that’s often from scooping too much forward with the back foot. I’d try and experiment with pushing more back than forward with the back foot and see where the deck starts to land. And troubleshoot from there 💪

      @@SarahParkMatott my fakie shuvs have that kind of "pro" look you described where the board spins under my feet due to scooping really hard from the back left corner, instead of replicating that motion for regular, im gonna try pushing back with my right foot and placing it more forward when i setup. Thanks for the advice

  • @NathanLin

    For my case, fakie shuvit is way more easier than the regular one. It feels natural and smooth to scoop and make the board spin when doing fakie. I still cannot do a regular one..

    Ive found a way to shove it, so that i dont have to jump forward. I have my body weight in the middle of the board but slightly more to the nose and i lean a little bit forward. The board rotates right underneath me this way.

    Started skating 2 years ago, quit for a year and came back progressing super fast now but the fear of falling is holding me back from improving. Watched dozens of videos on UA-cam about how to get rid of the fear but nothing helped. The fear of falling being the only thing that is holding me back is really frustrating and really demotivating. Can someone give me some advice?

    • @SarahParkMatott
      @SarahParkMatott  3 роки тому +3

      Did you watch my video on fear and skateboarding? I think the best way to work through fear is by building up confidence. It's not easy. But, I found that the idea of the "competence - confidence loop" to be really helpful. In my experience, improving my skills no matter how small they might seem directly increased my confidence and lowered my levels of fear. But typically, we feel pretty rushed as skaters to "progress fast" which can do a lot of harm to our progression in the first place. I can't speak for anyone else, but for me, the more developed my basic skills became (just riding, pivoting, tic tac etc and any other tricks I could do at that time) the more confident I became and less afraid of falling. But, putting in that hard work takes a lot of time. And it's hard to be patient in the meantime. Whenever I feel scared, I know I just need to take my time, step back if I have to, work up to a point where I feel more comfortable doing something. I'm not a "do it scared" type, and I don't want to be. This is what works for me. Everyone is a bit different.

    For the problem about flipping, in my experience it is because the back feet grab the deck when rotating.
